Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

I purchased the B&W 20K Companion Slider & Underbed Mount System (UMS) for my 2015 Ford F150 extended cab (with 6 foot bed) over a year ago because it was the only solution that was removable. Construction and finish was very nice and still looks great. Installation wasn't too difficult but the 4” hole in the bed needs to be exact otherwise getting it square will be very difficult. Overall the slider works great but must be mounted directly on the bed and cannot be mounted over a plastic bed liner. Once installed everything worked great however after numerous trips I've yet to need or use the slider backing up as I can turn 80+ degrees without ever hitting or coming close to the truck cab (towing 2018 Cougar Half Ton Series 5th wheel). Also the slider is very heavy (head 75 lbs + base 207 lbs = 282 lbs) to remove and install (takes two people or an overhead winch). Plus the overall hitch weight (head, base & UMS is 394 lbs) puts me very close to the GVWR once the truck & trailer is fully loaded hence in hindsight I probably should have gone with the fixed 5th wheel hitch (total just 318 lbs compared to 400 lbs) instead as it would have saved 81 lbs and costs $489 less but at least I have the option to slide it back if ever needed.

Upgraded to the B&W slider from an Anderson Ultimate. The reason was the short bed truck I'm pulling with. Initially the hitch was awesome and slid easily. While it says there is no lubrication required, it started sliding really hard (had to hold the trailer brakes and jerk the truck forward pretty hard to get it to slide back). I tried dry lube - no better. Finally shot some wd-40 on the slide bars and under the hitch and it's back to gliding pretty well. Another shortfall are the rubber bumpers that are and the end of each slide rail - they don't hold the hitch tight enough in position so I do get some noise as the hitch moves (ever so slightly) back and forth. The hitch is solid (heavy) and well built. If buying again I'd likely get an auto slider even with the extra weight it costs me in the bed of the truck

This hitch feels incredibly well made and B&W customer support is incredible. One of the bed rail strips came loose after a month or so of owning it and only a few uses. Turns out the screw was stripped. After contacting B&W looking to purchase a replacement as it was likely my mistake, they sent a whole new strip free of charge. I will definitely purchase B&W products from etrailer again.

Best choice to keep your gooseneck options and have a 5th wheel. Went together easily video helpful Got the slide options even in an 8 ft box glad we did HEAVY

Great be sure to get the fifth wheel kingpin lifter to lift the 5th wheel out so you have a truck bed We use the sliding 5th wheel when we hook up so it is closer to me as I line it up

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned. It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up. There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past. In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one. Dan seegmiller

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again.

I have pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel over 7000, miles in the year that I have owned the Companion hitch and have had no issues. Being new to a 5th wheel I have nothing to compare it to, but I couldn’t imagine anything out performing this setup. I still appreciate the fact that when I pull the hitch out of the box of my truck there is nothing that interferes with any load that I haul, weather it is a load of lumber or landscaping mulch. Only down side is the overall weight of the hitch when I remove it alone, I do need a mobile cherry picker. Well worth the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the feedback, we have had other customers tell us that they do some disassembly of the head from the base to help when removing their companion from the bed of their truck. It is still a daunting task, but eliminating some weight while trying to move it works a little better.

Shipment was delivered on stated delivery date. Excellent condition. Installed unit in truck and no major issues. I used straps and a front end loader on my tractor to place it it the bed. Recommend two people to actually set in place on the gooseneck hitch. Also, recommend the lift device vs. straps and chain. I will be ordering the lift device soon..

Great product. The sliding adapter allows for a trouble free parking experience. This is the smartest purchase I've made in a long time. Our fellow traveling family bought a fixed gooseneck hitch. Didn't work out so well. My buddy put a dimple in the upper left rear corner of his new 2017 F-250 due to lack of clearance with his fifth wheel. Broke out his back window too. A no-kidding $10,000 repair (aluminum pillar could not be repaired, required complete roof swap). He saw my sliding set up, bought one that week. He loves his too. I've even swapped the fifth wheel adapter to one of my other trucks. Would recommend this product to anyone.

For your 2020 Ram 2500 short bed without the OEM rail kit I highly recommend the B and W Companion slider hitch part # BWRVK3400 with the rail kit part # BWGNRK1320. He said there are a couple of things you can do to alleviate the sticking you're getting when the hitch is under load. You can indeed apply a light coat of white lithium grease like # L11350 to the slider rails to help with movement. This shouldn't be something you have to do regularly but it should definitely help to improve this issue...

  • Gooseneck Adapter For Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch
There is not a square shank adapter for the B-W Companion Sliding Hitch # BWRVK3400 for any other underbed gooseneck system. It is only compatible with the B&W gooseneck system. You may be able to use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Trailer Hitches - 20,000 lbs # C16210 although this is not a confirmed fit. If that adapter fits, you could use it along with any standard sliding hitch like the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider -...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Hitch Adapter on Short Bed Truck
It is not recommended to use an offset ball and another adapter for your 5th wheel. I recommend the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter w/ Offset - 12" to 16" Tall # CAB-C5GX1216. This will give you a 7-1/2 inch offset. A better option that will give you more turning clearance and a more stable connection is to use the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3400. This sliding 5th wheel hitch fits in your B&W gooseneck and utilizes...

  • Troubleshooting B&W Companion Slider Base Stuck In Gooseneck
I reached out to my contact at B&W and they said that the B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400 sometimes within the first use or two this happens if you haven't used grease. You have already done a great job with loosening the draw down bolt and removing the pin. Next, make sure you are pulling it straight up. You may need a couple people to help this time since it is already stuck. You can use a pry bar on each area right...

  • B&W Companion Draw Down Bolt Not Tightening to Installation Specs
The B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400 should not be loosening as you state and it does sound like you have either a stripped bolt because it tightens to an extent and then loosens but will allow you to tighten again to that same point. I've attached the installation details that state it should be torqued to 80 foot lbs for use. This bolt draws the hitch firmly into the bed of the truck ensuring the underbed connection...

  • B&W Companion Latch Handle Stuck and Won't Unlatch
I am a big advocate of preventative maintenance, a little bit of maintenance can save a lot of time and frustration down the road. So I recommend lubricating the hitch well and making sure that you are in line with the trailer on level ground so unhooking is a little easier. The B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3400 has 4 main points that need to be lubricated. The polyurethane bushings (that the head sits on) need a thin layer of multi purpose...

  • What Is The Function Of The Draw-Down Bolt On B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch
The Draw-Down bolt is used to adjust the socket adjuster when you are installing the Companion hitch. When using the Companion like part # BWRVK3400 you need to retract the gooseneck latch pin handle to remove the Turnoverball from the bed of the truck. Then slide the handle back in so that it passes all the way through the shank on the Companion hitch. If it does not pass through both sides of the shank you can use the Draw-Down bolt to adjust the socket to allow the pin to pass through...

  • Replacement Draw-Down Bolt for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Sliding Base
For your B&W Companion Slider Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400 that draw down bolt is 1/2" x 3-1/2". We don't have the factory bolt and washer replacement, but you can use a grade 5 bolt and torque it to 80 lbs as the manufacturer recommends in the installation instructions and you'd be good to go. I've attached a photo to assist.

  • 2013 Silverado 2500 HD With 6-1/2 Foot Bed Recommendations For 5th Wheel Clearance
For your 2013 Silverado 2500HD with B&W Turnoverball, there is no simple solution unless you want to have a good quality but basic "non-automatic" sliding hitch like # BWRVK3400. This will require getting in and out of your truck to adjust the slide for turning, but is compatible with your current gooseneck hitch. Your two other options will require removing your gooseneck hitch and installing 5th wheel rails, because of the torque issues you stated in either case with the other options....
