Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

Once you have the post in place on the base, position the base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The RV post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

To tighten the connection between your Turnoverball hitch and the Companion, torque down the integrated drop-down bolt. This bolt runs through the crossmember of the Companion base and then down through the RV post. When you tighten the drop-down bolt, the base will be pulled closer to your truck bed, creating a more substantial connection. This, along with the wide stance of the hitch's base, helps to ensure maximum stability when you're towing.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Note: If you have a short bed truck, you may want to use the B&W Companion Slider hitch (BWRVK3400 - sold separately) instead of the standard Companion. This fifth-wheel trailer hitch, which also adapts your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch, incorporates a slider that gives you an extra 12" of fore/aft movement to ensure proper cab clearance when executing turns.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

It’s been a great gooseneck to fifth wheel trailer hitch. Easy to setup and remove when I need my full 8’ bed To haul items. Also like the feature I can remove the 5th wheel plate so easy. Been pulling my 5th wheel for a year and no regrets buying this product.

Would have been great if i had received my complete order. Got the base but no coupler plate. The hitch comes in two boxes, i received one box. Yet you say my order was delivered. $[XX] dollars for something i can't use. Stick it to the retired people we normally don't complain. Thanks for nothing.

I decided to buy the Champion fifth wheel hitch to pull a fifth wheel camper, my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 already had a B&W goose neck hitch in it. The champion hitch allowed me to also have a fifth wheel hitch with out drilling and mounting more weight to the truck. The instructions for assembly were clear and easy to follow making the assembly of the hitch easy. The hitch fit snug and there is no play in it. The 26' fifth wheel camper pulled nicely, no surging or swaying.

Comments
Very good I have towed a fifth wheel camper, it tows very nicely, there is no play in the hitch in the goose neck adapter, and no slop in the fifth wheel at the trailer

Make sure to have two people for installation. The only reason this is a must is due to the weight of the items and safety. The installation was not bad, the only item that is worth mentioning to watch for is near the end of the installation instructions. The jaws release lever has two bolts to hold it onto the receiver plate itself. The top is a rounded head with allen wrench style fittings. Unfortunately even though it seems like the allen wrench would hold the minute you put any torque on the nut it spins. I ended up replacing both immediately before fully tightening to ensure the handle was solid in place. As both bolts have no load or weight to them this was an easy decision to make. Everything you can tell is built solid and is pure steel, this thing should not go anywhere! Also to note I have my height adjustment for the plate at the highest setting and my tonneau cover still fully covers the truck bed without touching!

Comments
It has been great, no issues and still pulling my fifth wheel without any incident. I did have to adjust the plate down all the way but that was to even out the trailer angle to raise backend of camper more so as not to hit back end on anything. Easy enough if you have a torque power drill to take all the bolts off and move, then just make sure to use torque wrench again to the 80lbs required.

Fast shipping! There is a reason B&W is the most recommended fifth wheel hitch. This hitch is solid. The mechanism makes hitching and unhitching a breeze. Super secure connection. Easy to install.

I tow a 16000 lb fifth wheel and this adapter works perfectly. It's easy to hook up and I had a RV place in Arizona install it and they did so for less than $100. The tow rating on this is about 20 thousand pounds I believe so I'm well within the limits Towing this trailer. I would highly recommend this product for anyone who is towing a fifth-wheel within the rated tow range.

Comments
its been an excellent hitch. I pulled the trailer about eight to ten Thousand Miles without a problem with a hitch. Im thinking about getting a larger fifth wheel so I imagine Ill have to have a hitch that will pull a 24,000 pound trailer right? No doubt you have them no I havent checked your site. Its a little early yet. Thank you for your follow-up I appreciate it.

Arrived in about 4 days. I ordered it on a Friday evening so that was pretty quick for free shipping. Installed it in about two hrs.took our first trip with the new 5th wheel hitch and it is awesome. It doesn't make any clunky noise when starting and stopping. Well worth every penny.

I appreciated advice when ordering and decided on the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailed Hitch Adapter. Delivery was super fast. I ordered after 5:00 pm on Thursday and the package was in front of the garage by noon on Friday. My wife said that was faster than Amazon! Instructions were detailed well, so after purchasing a torque wrench, I was good to go. I watched a video also, as being from Missouri, I have to be showed! The quality seems to be great. By Saturday noon, I was able to hook up to our 5th wheel RV.
Thanks so much!

Great product, well represented by e- trailer . Went on a cross country haul with No experience , after installing at home onto goose neck 5th wheel ball system and picking up trailer 1400 miles away. It was No problem, backed into mount shoe , clicked over lock and handle and away I went , drove hundreds of miles per day up to 75 MPH and No issues at all.

Awesome product. Best of both fifth and goose put together about time. No annoying rails on my trucks bed, just remove fifth wheel flip gosse over and hides in hole within minutes. 2016 350 Ram. 38' 5R no problem nice setup.

by:

I’m very satisfied with this installation was easy best of all I didn’t lose the use of my gooseneck ball. This was a lot easier than replacing my pinbox

by:

I like the hitch and it's a very solid built hitch

This was my first time ordering from etrailer.com. Having gotten used to order backlogs and shipment delays over the last two years, I was extremely impressed (and equally surprised) by the quick turnaround time from when I first placed my order to when I received it (five days total). The free shipping was an added bonus! I highly recommend etrailer.com and will definitely order with you again.

by:

First dealing with Erika W was great, good product knowledge and told me my product would be at my front door in 3 days - it was. I received the hitch and it took me about an hour to open up, assemble and install. Very straight forward and easy to work with solo. I have yet to connect to my 5th wheel but so far so good. Thanks Erika.

by:

What a great product. The installation was easy and the security you can feel when it hooks up to your fifth wheel is great with just a glance you can see that it is safely locked in place.

Comments
The hitch is fabulous, when it is hooked up it performs super, the security and solid hook up feels great. Upon our return from overseas we lived in our fifth wheel for a year and did a lot of towing. I did have to put a pulley in my garage to assist in removing and loading the hutch as its 220 lb weigh made it impossible for me to do by myself. With the pulley it’s a simple job.

A good, solid, idiot-proof connection. As a 25 yr veteran of trucking, I love the error free way of knowing the king pin is latched. Also, super easy to unlatch. No yanking or jerking

by:

Quality product. Will see how it performs shortly. The packaging for the hitch base could be a little more substantial. The box was destroyed and resulted in some superficial scrubs on the finish coat on the base during shipment. Minor issue I can live with.

  • How to Remove and Re-Install the B&W Companion Adapter # BWRVK3500
The people at B&W made removing and re-installing the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3500 very easy. All you will need to do to remove it is take the head off of the assembly, as that will make the base lighter, then loosen up the tension bolt that sits under the head. Once that is loose enough you will want to disengage the lock for the B&W Gooseneck hitch and then remove the base of the B&W Companion. I have attached a video of the Companion being installed...

  • b&w companion 3500 gooseneck to 5th wheel
The key to determining which position you'll put the sleeve on your B&W Companion Hitch # BWRVK3500 into is determined by whether or not your turnoverball is installed over the rear axle. Since you've got an F-350, per the installation instructions, your turnoverball should be directly over the rear axle. Because of this, you'll want to have it in Position #1, which is going to be closest to the cab. I've attached the instructions for you to reference which section I'm talking about.

Yes this is a valid concern. In the instructions for the Companion Hitch # BWRVK3500, B&W does say that if the truck bed has a removable bed liner or mat, it should be removed or cut to allow the base of the hitch to have direct contact with the bed.

As long as you cut the BedRug in your truck so that the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3500 makes complete contact with the bed you can absolutely do this. As you mentioned you will just need to trim around the base/pads of the Companion and the gooseneck hole so that the contact points rest on the bed itself when mounted. In fact there is a small section in the installation manual that addresses this, which I have attached below.

Gooseneck ball shanks like what the Companion hitch part # BWRVK3500 uses to connect to the truck bed sometimes can be difficult to release if left installed for a length of time. Best option is to get underneath truck bed and spray penetrating lube like WD40 everywhere you can near the ball and the release levers. It also helps to do this from the top of the hitch as well. When installing the B&W Companion, part # BWRVK3500, in your 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 you need to place it so that you have enough cab clearance to make sharp turns. Since you have a long bed truck turning clearance shouldn't be an issue so the hitch should be centered directly over the axle or slightly in front of it. Positioning it 8 to 10 inches forward like you have is shifting the pin weight of your trailer forward on the truck which could be what's causing the bounce you're getting.
