  • Pin weight capacity range: 2,000 lbs - 4,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

Notes:

  • In order for the pin box's shock absorption to work correctly, make sure your pin weight is within the pin weight range.
  • Because the Gen-Y Hitch Executive is shorter than the Lippert 1621 or 1621 HD pin box, the clearance between your trailer and tow vehicle during turns might be reduced.

  • Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter

Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.

You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.

A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.

Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

    Executive torsion

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.

    torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

    Easily Check Your Vertical Load

    scale

The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The red section on the top of the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The red section on the bottom of the scale indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter Pin Box Review

Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the Gen-Y fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter. Now this is going to be a replacement pin box to the 1621, 1621 HD. And essentially it allows us to eliminate the entire fifth wheel in the bed of our truck. As long as we have a gooseneck ball that's available in the bed of our truck, this is going to connect to that so that it eliminates the need for us having that big bulky fifth wheel installed in the bed of our truck or the bed rails that are permanently installed across the bed of the truck. This is going to connect on a 2 and 5/16th inch ball. Now the second, and in my mind the biggest benefit, yeah, not having to take the fifth wheel in and out, that's awesome.

But also this uses a torsion flex head. So essentially these plates are goosenecks connected here. These plates here and here, these pivot up and down using a tried and true torsion flex system. They've been using them on axles on motor homes, or not motor homes, but campers and travel trailers for an extremely long time. A lot of horse trailers where ride quality is important, they use torsion flex axles.

And Gen-Y has adapted that over to work on your pin box here. And you'll see in the footage that we've got of it, does an awesome job. This is one that I've used several times and it's amazing how much difference the ride quality is between a standard pin box connected to a fifth wheel and this connected down to a gooseneck. Now, a pretty common question that we get is about warranty and if using this is going to void the warranty on your side plates to the camper, and it does it not at all. There is one out there that sometimes depending on the manufacturer can, and that's the convertible fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter. You move the connection point down a lot lower, whereas this has everything it needs to keep this from pivoting or twisting or anything like that.

So no warranty void on it at all.And it's made out of a really nice high quality material. As you can see, we've got really thick plates and everything's just overbuilt on us and it has an awesome powder coat finish. It's like a hammered finish. They focus on this a lot to ensure that the Gen-Y products are always going to look good for an extremely long time to the point to where they actually designed their own powder coating facility just to ensure that the quality was there. They take a lot of steps.

They make all of this right here in the United States and they take a lot of steps to be sure what you're getting is going to be the highest quality possible.Another thing I really like about this one is all of the holes that we have on the side of the pin box to choose from, basically when this camper came in, it had a standard king pin on it and the front end of the trailer was tilted up. The truck was a, what is it a '16 or '17 Ram 2,500 and it's got oversized tires. It's not lifted. The tires are just a little bit bigger than factory and it had the front end of the camper tilted up. There was plenty of gap between the camper and the side rails of the bed. So we moved this up in there just a little bit further, and it helped to level of the camper out really well.It also has locations built into attach safety chains. Generally a fifth wheel hitch does not have safety chains. Goosenecks though, which we've converted our fifth wheel over to, do. So we can simply run a set of safety chains through here. Part number 49-150 has a 16,000 pound capacity, 44 inch chains. So that would be great if you don't already have chains. So we've got an attachment tab here. This could be used. You can see our breakaway switch is attached to the side plates or the wing plates that you could just as easy attach that right down here and not have to drill or modify anything. Laser cut Gen-Y on the side, so if the finish doesn't stand out and tell people that it's a Gen-Y this will for you.See it's going to come with a snapper pin here. So once we've got this lowered down onto our ball, which in using it, I was kind of surprised because on a lot of goosenecks there's a little bit of a taper kind of built in to help guide that ball down and in. But even with this one being pretty flush all the way around I had no issues with it at all. We had the ball, it was about a quarter ball off and it just slid right down and on. So I was really happy with that. You can see the pin is just going to fit through here. We'll do it this way so you can see it. It's going to fit through here, come around and just clips on very similar to most other goosenecks out there using that pin to hold it in place. Now, when we first started using this, this was a pretty snug fit. So what I did was just kind of took a drill bit and I just honed that slightly. Didn't take out any material, just honed it a little bit. I think when they put that powder coat on, just kind of fills that hole a little bit, but right now you can see it slides in and out really well. And you may or may not have to do that on yours.Something else I really like about the Gen-Y set up here and it really helps out each time you hook up and load up, is a built in scale that they've gotten here on the side. You can see unloaded the bottom part of our pin there is lined up with the white mark. As we load it, that's going to rotate up and that's going to help us to judge if we've got the appropriate amount of tongue weight up here in the front so we don't have any guesswork. It takes a lot of the headaches out of it and you'll know that you're properly loaded each time you go to head down the road. But a pretty common question that we get with this particular one is how far does it come out Pin boxes, they can be slightly different lengths. And from the center of our forward mounting holes here to the center of where our ball's going to sit, it's about 21 and a half inches. So it gives us a little bit more room than what we see out of some of the pin boxes.Another great thing about the Gen-Y hitch is that we don't have any maintenance. There's no airbags to maintain pressure in. There's no shocks to fail. We're just using the tried and true torsion flex system here in the head to take care of all of that. Now as far as the installation goes, of course, you need to get your old pin box out of the way and hang onto your old hardware. You're going to be reusing that unless of course that's damaged. If it's kind of worn out anything like that, you want to replace it. You'll replace it with 5/8 inch bolts. You'll see when we do the installation here in just a second, but you want to bolt and flat washer on the outside with a lock washer and nut on the inside. So let's take a look at that process now.Now to install the pin box, we're going to get a couple extra sets of hands. Got our strong guys here. They're going to help us lift it into place, and we're going to get it matched up with our original hole locations. Just want to be sure that you take the difference in the top of your fifth wheel down to your gooseneck and make sure that the end of this is going to wind up in the right spot for you.Down a little bit, up a little bit. Okay. Now what I like to do is get four bolts put in place, and then we'll have them continue to hold it for us until we get a lock washer and nut on the inside. Remember we talked about 5/8 diameter hardware, bolt and flat washer on the outside, lock washer and nut on the inside. Once you get these four with the nut on them, then it'll hold itself in the spot while we get other hardware installed. All right. Thank you, guys. Now with everything started, we're going to grab our 15/16, we're going to get this snugged down. Then we'll torque it to the specifications in our instructions.Once we have those torqued down properly, we'll move on to getting our chains put in place. I like the X hole here. You see the chain slides through pretty easy. You don't have to fight it too much. We've marked the center point on ours. So let's see right there, we're going to just leave that in the middle. Bring it on through to the other side and just put our chain back on.Now when hauling a camper with a standard pin box and a fifth wheel hitch, there's a lot of issues that come up and it's basically in the ride comfort and ride quality, get a lot of that forward and back kind of chucking, especially if you encounter any kind of speed bumps or anything like that. And there's a lot of up and down. So as this camper, the weight pushes up and down on the rear of your truck, it causes the back of the truck to go up and down. This is going to absorb that at the source. So as this camper wants to move up and down, this just shifts. This stays fixed and this is going to shift up and down, absorbing that. So it's going to make it much more comfortable as you head down the road. It makes, like I said, a world of difference and it almost eliminates all of that forward and back on your initial takeoffs or when you're breaking, you'll feel a little surge, really eliminates that.So this is going to do an excellent job of being super strong, super secure. It's going to help to free up the bed of your trucks. You don't have those rails running across, and it's going to make everything a lot more comfortable. That comfort factor comes with benefits for the camper and the truck too so, because we don't have that fixed point, we don't have all that weight transferring down on the truck, save a lot of the wear and tear on the rear suspension because we don't have all that transferring back up into the side plates here up into the front of our fifth wheel. We save a lot of wear and tear on the camper. So there are a lot of benefits with this. And this is one of my favorite pin boxes. I really liked the gooseneck aspect, not having that big hitch in the back and not having the rails that run across. And on my fifth wheel camper, this is definitely the pin box I would have on it.

Review from a similar Executive King Pin in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

Installation was very straight forward, it is heavy so you need something to prop it up for you while you get at least one bolt started in each side. I used the bucket on my tractor to hold it up. I only have one tow in so far for about 50 miles so still early to review. It certainly works as advertised for taking out a lot of the trailer feedback on rough roads, uneven transitions, etc. It is an improvement in ride quality and makes towing a big fifth wheel more comfortable. Necessary? Probably not but it does spoil you a little bit. One problem though that Gen-Y is working on fixing is the ball to pinbox is a little bit longer and I did hit the bed cap at about 60 deg of turn while backing in at an angle. It cleared when I tested it in the flat driveway, but not by much. They are going to come up with a fix. I'm at 7 1/2" clearance from the overhang to the bed caps sitting flat. This is with a '18 Chev Silverado HD 8' bed and a '19 Momentum 351M

Review from a similar Executive King Pin in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

I put a flatbed on my truck so I could load my side by side and go wherever we want. This meant I had to figure out a new way to pull my toyhauler. I had a ford factory fifth wheel prep package with the reese hitch. With the flatbed I cant use this hitch anymore. I was planning to use the Anderson ultimate fifthwheel hitch but would have to change the pin box on my toyhauler as well since it was a flexair and Anderson says not to use a pin box that pivots. Sooo......I started searching for a new pin box and came across this hitch. This solved all my problems! Don't need an Anderson hitch as this pin box will attach to the ball on my flatbed. I called and talked with Chrissy who was super helpful. I ordered the pin box and it arrived yesterday. With some help I got it installed in less than an hour. (2 or 3 person job). It looks great and I'm excited to test it out. Fast shipping and great packaging. Thanks etrailer.com!

    • How to Determine 5th Wheel Pin Box to Switch to Gooseneck Adapter
I think we can make things less frustrating, as there is a way to identify your pin box even if you don't have the identifying plate or sticker to tell you exactly what it is. You will need to do a bit of measuring of the bolt holes on your pin box as well as the pin box itself, but this will allow you to determine exactly what you have. I have added a link below to a help article called "Measuring to Determine the Correct Replacement Pin Box for a 5th-Wheel Trailer" which has the exact...
