Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.
You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.
A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
The Gen-Y pin box adapter makes hooking up your trailer easy thanks to its automatic latch. When your hitch ball moves into the coupler tube, the latch instantly engages. No need to manually close the socket once the coupler is on the ball.
Disconnecting is fast and easy too. This normally requires that you crawl into your truck bed to access and release the latch. But the Gen-Y adapter box can be disconnected from outside of your truck bed. The included cable attaches to the latch on the coupler's base. Just run the cable up your trailer frame and secure it in a convenient place. When you're ready to disengage the coupler, simply pull the cable to release the ball from the socket. No need to climb into your truck bed.
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The top red mark on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The bottom red mark indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

I guess the only negative is that it’s not as easy as a regular fifth wheel hitch to hook up by yourself but after a few times you can line it up ok. The best thing is that no big hitch taking up space in my truck bed just a ball
Because of my bad back I replaced my B&W Companion hitch & Lippert Rota Flex hitch pin which I loved using. There is a learning curve with hitching a gooseneck trailer but with some reflective tape on the center line above the coupler on the gooseneck and a telescoping yellow ball hitching aid with a magnetic base on the truck bed just in front of the ball. This hitch setup is softer and smoother towing than my old setup and I have about 5k miles of use.
Space saver, back saver, pulls great. The thing saves so much space in your bed, gives so much room while pulling. It saves your back because no more putting the giant heavy fifth wheel hitch in and out of the bed. It pulls great too, pulling my 42' would buy it again for any trailer. Much more solid that the adapters sold.
The hitch itself works great! Easy to hook and unhook. The only downside to it, as with all gooseneck hitches, is getting into the bed to hook and unhook chains. Adding the hitch and airbags on my truck has defiantly smoothed the ride on the whoopy woops on the road.
I pulled my redwood with an Andersen ball hitch and thought it was great. I just purchased a new Columbus 5er and installed a Gen Y. The Gen Y is unbelievably smoother, even considering my redwood had an air ride hitch. Installation was a snap with a little assist for lifting. The ride is solid and remarkably smooth. I should have bought the Gen Y years ago.
Got here 2 days late, but that's OK. I wasn't ready to install it yet. Probably the kids at UPS couldn't lift it! HAHA. 135lbs. Looks good out of the box. My 5th wheel hitch won't fit the new truck prep so I decided to go this route. Now I have a Reese hitch and a Moryde pin box for sale. No pictures yet.
Took less than 20 minutes to remove existing king pin box and install the gen y was pulling down the road in half hr part works as it should the only thing I would change is making a lock open on the cable pull cause yo need to stand between box and camper when hooking up
This works absolutely perfect in a Ram 3500 with 6 1/2 ft bed, and the Gen Y gooseball hitch.
I think if more people knew of this combination, the fifth wheel style hitch, Anderson hitch and others would become obsolete.
Get to your destination, disconnect, pull out the ball, and the bed of your truck is free!
Very fast shipping and very solid built !!
Works great and I have my bed space back and not tied up with bulky fithwheel plates and rails. Trailer pulls great a lot quieter and reduced chucking.
UPS would not deliver my coupler in a timely manner because they said one driver could not pick it up. I went 30 miles to the UPS distribution center and put it in the back of my truck. The coupler looks to be a nice piece... the shipping was sub standard.
Quick, easy install. And this thing took the fifth wheel amazingly. My first trip was from Tulsa to Memphis. Most of the ride was 70 cruise control and there were quite a few times I saw the fifth wheel bouncing around in the back, but hardly felt it in the truck. I have a 2019 F350 DRW. The shipping was quick, I bought on a Sunday and had by Wednesday. The install was fairly easy with two people. Just don't forget to retorque the pin box bolts after a few hundred miles. No regrets purchasing this thing.
Haven't got to use the hitch yet but l am sure it will work fine.. Adam Y and the folks at etrailer are top notch. The only place to shop for truck, trailer and camper accessories.
Super easy install, can't wait to test how the new hitch pulls this weekend.
I just got it I haven’t used it yet
Delivered on time !
Looks good
