Notes:

  • In order for the pin box's shock absorption to work correctly, make sure your pin weight is within the pin weight range.
  • To calculate correct towing weight for Gen-Y hitches, use this formula: GVWR x 0.22 = TW.
  • Because the Gen-Y Hitch Executive may be shorter than the Fabex 665 or M&M 665 pin box, the clearance between your trailer and tow vehicle during turns might be reduced.

Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter

Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.

You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.

A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.

Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion with cable

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Easy to Couple and Uncouple

auto latch and cable

The Gen-Y pin box adapter makes hooking up your trailer easy thanks to its automatic latch. When your hitch ball moves into the coupler tube, the latch instantly engages. No need to manually close the socket once the coupler is on the ball.

Disconnecting is fast and easy too. This normally requires that you crawl into your truck bed to access and release the latch. But the Gen-Y adapter box can be disconnected from outside of your truck bed. The included cable attaches to the latch on the coupler's base. Just run the cable up your trailer frame and secure it in a convenient place. When you're ready to disengage the coupler, simply pull the cable to release the ball from the socket. No need to climb into your truck bed.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (2,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Adapts Trailer - GY93FR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Gen-Y Executive 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box Coupler with the auto latch, and this is for the Fabex and M&M 665 pin boxes, and this has an 18,000 pound towing capacity. Now, this 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter pin box will let you tow your 5th wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. This fifth wheel pin box will replace the factory pin box that's on your trailer, and as we mentioned, this one here is designed to replace the Fabex and the M&M 665 5th wheel pin boxes. Basically, the coupler right up here is what will attach to your truck's 2 5/16 standard gooseneck hitch ball. This one uses a unique shock absorbing design, you can see up front here, ensures a nice, smooth, steady ride.

The technology of this functions just like a torsion axle to limit the transfer of road shock from the trailer to the truck and vice versa. It will reduce chucking and rough fore-and-aft motion, it'll even limit bounce and the jarring up and down motion. Nice thing about it, there's no airbags on this to maintain, and it uses fewer moving parts to repair or replace than with some of the other shock absorbing solutions that are out there. It does use this nice auto latch coupler with the cable. This auto latch coupler makes hooking up your trailer very easy.

Basically, when your hitch ball right here will move into the coupler tube, this latch will instantly engage and lock it into place and you're ready to go, there's no need to have to manually close the socket once the coupler is on the ball, it'll automatically do that. Also, disconnecting is very fast and easy, normally, again, it would require you to crawl in the truck bed, access, release the latch, and then you can remove it. But with this adapter box, you can disconnect from the outside of your truck bed, you can see the cable's long enough that you can reach it from the outside. This included cable you can see is attached to the latch here on the coupler's face, so when you're ready to disengage the coupler, just simply pull this cable, and it releases the ball from the socket. Again, no need to have to climb in the truck bed.

Now, the other feature I wanna talk about, one of the main features on this, I wanna zoom in and show you right here, is this built-in mechanical scale right here, and that's so that you can check to see if the vertical load on this is too high or too low. Now, the vertical load, it's pretty critical, it's also known as the pin weight, this will refer to the weight that this fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in your truck bed, and if you have too little vertical load, could cause trailer sway, and if you have too much, it'll cause poor performance, so you wanna have the correct vertical load when you're all hooked up and ready to go. So if you look at the scale, you'll notice right at the top here has a high red area, at the very bottom there's a red area, and a green area in between. That highest red area on the scale indicates the maximum vertical load, which is 2,500 pounds, the very lowest red area, that's the no vertical load or zero pounds. So you want the vertical load to be inside that middle green area, and that's recommended, because the built-in shock absorption will then function effectively.

So when this is installed and you're all hooked up, you wanna look at the scale, make sure that white marker line right there is in the green area, if you're in the green area, you're good, ready to go. And again, that pin weight capacity range is gonna be a 1,000 pounds up to 2,500 pounds. Now, the other feature I wanna show you is on the sides here, you see these cross-shaped holes, one over here, one on the other side, those cross-shaped holes will provide the attachment points for your safety chains. Safety chains are required to keep your 5th wheel attached to your tow vehicle. Now, it doesn't include the safety chains, you would have to supply those, or we do sell those separately on our website. This pin box is a nice heavy duty steel construction, has a nice powder coat finish on it to resist wearing and corrosion. It has a very simple bolt-on installation. Now, it does require the included hardware, which is a 5/8 inch standard bolts and washers. Now, just so happens today, I was out of the hardware, but I just wanted to pop up a picture, and if you look at the insert at the bottom there, that'll show you the hardware that will come with this part, and that'll allow you to install it onto the Fabex or M&M 665 pin boxes. Now, this part is made in the USA, and the towing capacity, again, is 18,000 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Gen-Y Executive 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box Coupler with the auto latch for the Fabex and M&M 665 pin boxes..
