Video Transcript for All About the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve

Adam: Hi everyone. Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox converter sleeve and what this is going to do is basically going to be able to allow all of your two-inch hitch accessories to go into your two and a half inch hitch receiver. So if you have a work truck, and you've got an SUV, and you've got a really expensive ball mount that you would like to use on both so you don't have to buy two, all you got to do is grab one of these converter sleeves.Blue Ox does make one that's black powder-coated, so it does go nicely with our black truck here. So basically you just want the longer end facing towards the front of your vehicle, so then those holes will line up nicely. Slide that on there, slide it in and you can get those holes nice and lined up.

Yep.Once you get that done, it does have a five-eighths inch diameter hole, so your normal hitch pin hole should be able to fit through there. And we do have a lot of different options. I know Buyers Products has one that's not black and powder-coated, but it does stick out a little bit farther and it's actually somewhat visible when it's in your hitch. But this is definitely going to be able to save you a little bit of money so you don't have to buy two different accessories for the two different size hitch receivers that you may have.So the Blue Ox converter sleeve is going to have a powder-coated finish and it is going to be made of steel so it will last a decently long time. If you're not necessarily too fond of the black powder-coat finish, Buyers Products does have one that is just a carbon steel construction and has a zinc-plated coating on it.

So it is going to resist rust and corrosion. One that I have, I have noticed that powder-coated items slowly started to scratch and the second you get down to that actual bare metal, the elements usually turn it to a rusty-looking color. This way it's just going to stay how it is throughout the life of the converter sleeve. So our Buyers Products is going to be about six inches long, so it is going to stick out a little bit more than our Blue Ox here, and with the color it's going to be more visible. From the middle of our hitch pin hole all the way to the end on our longer side here, it is going to be about three and a half inches. But with our Blue Ox here it's going to be about four.

And then on the other side, on our Blue Ox it is going to be about an inch and three-quarter inches. And on our Buyers Products it's going to be about two and a half inches. So it's all just personal preference. But if you would like to stay pretty low profile, the Blue Ox is definitely the one you want to go with.Well everyone, that's going to do it for our look at the Blue Ox converter sleeve for two and a half inch hitch receivers.

Works like a champ. I’d gotten a new truck with larger receiver and obviously didn’t want to buy a new ball mount for our weight distributing hitch. Using the adapter initially hurt my head as a ‘band aid’ solution, but it worked flawlessly on a recent 2000 mile trip. Zero regrets; will never hesitate to use it.

by:

The pin spacing is in a wonky place with my Curt hitch. Either it sticks out or it's too far in. Doesn't support the hitch.

by:

Fits just right. Set up with no issues. Using to adapt my truck 2 1/2” receiver to my 2” bike rack.

by:

First of all made in USA, well made, heavy duty and fits perfectly.

by:

Simple but works well;

Use it extensively for towing all trailers. Has held up well

by:

Awesome service. Karen had my order shipped out the same day. Saved our families vacation.

Works as it should.

by:

made with heavy duty material, well mad e.

Last year I purchased a Blue Ox Hitch Adapter for my 3/4 ton GMC pickup. My truck has a 2 1/2 inch hitch receiver from the factory and I wanted to reduce it to the standard 2 inch for my Jayco travel trailer. I have used it for a year now with complete satisfaction and have actually had it welded to my hitch. High marks for Blue Ox.

by:

Had to get this because the new truck had a class 5 hitch on it and didn’t want to replace all my ball mounts, especially the one for my Blue Ox Load Pro for the travel trailer. This product functions as advertised, the only complaint might be that it could be a little closer tolerance on the inside sizing but other than that money well spent.

by:

It is perfect for enabling a 2 inch hitch to be used in a 2.5 inch receiver.

by:

Its strong and it works but it does rattle a little bit when you hit a rough spot in the road.

by:

sleeve slides into the receiver without anything to stop it. When I line it up and slide the hitch, bike rack or whatever, the sleeve slides back past the hole. Getting the holes to line up is a real pain. One of the reviews I read said it had a ridge at the end to stop it from sliding all the way past the end of the receiver. Not that difficult since the sleeves that come with the truck have a ridge around the edge.

by:

etrailer products are always top quality. The Blue Ox hitch reducer saved me hundreds of dollars since I don't need to buy a new hitch slide. Orders are shipped in a timely matter if products are in stock. I will continue ordering from them in the future.

by:

I originally bought a reducer sleeve from my local auto parts store. The hitch had at least 1/8"of play in it . The blue ox gets tighter as the hitch is inserted and leaves ZERO play. Excellent product well worth the $20 extra dollars :).

by:

Perfect fit

by:

The reviews and you staff indicated this adapter would not have the 1/8 inch play that I had with other adapters. For the higher price I was expecting a better fit. Also it does not have a stop on it so lining up the holes takes a lot more work.

by:

First time that I have shopped on etrailer.com. I have to say it was a good experience!
Very fast service and the product is just what I was wanting.
Will shop with them again!

by:

Fantastic customer service. They called me when I messed
Up order and quickly fixed it. Very knowledgeable!!!

by:

I've ordered quite a few things from etrailer over the years and every time it arrives on time and damage free. The staff is always great and communicates well.

by:

Fits perfectly, works good

  • Can Reducer Sleeve Be Used With Blue Ox SwayPro
You definitely don't want to use the Curt since your 2023 Jayco Jay Flight 280RKS weighs 6,495 lbs with nothing in it. With that kind of rating on it I'm guessing you got a reducer and extension. Your typical reducer sleeve does not have a weight rating on it since it doesn't reduce hitch capacity. For example, our note on the Curt # C45405 states that the weight capacity is limited to the rated capacity of your hitch receiver. The same is true for the etrailer # e26YR. If you would rather...

  • Truck Bed Load Extender for a 2-1/2 Receiver
Currently the only truck bed extenders we carry are going to be for a 2" receiver like the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender # EM07600. We do have a Titan Hitch Box Extension # RP45018 which you can use to have a custom made extender. This 41" or 48" extension will allow for 400lbs of tongue weight at 48" or 500lbs at 41". This hitch box extension fits into a 2-1/2" receiver. Otherwise you could have a Reducer # BX88187 welded to the 2" tube on the extender so you will not have to deal with...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Airstream International
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your 2014 Airstream International and your 2016 Ford F-250 we will need to find your total tongue weight (TTW). Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. As long as your total tongue weight does not exceed 1,000 lbs then I recommend using the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control part # BXW1006....

The Blue Ox SwayPro 15K Weight Distribution System part # BXW1500 does not come with a 2-1/2" shank but rather a 2". The Blue Ox SwayPro 20K Weight Distribution System part # BXW2000 is the one that comes with a 2-1/2" shank. If needed, you could use an adapter like the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve part # BX88187 or just obtain the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Shank part # BXW4028 separately.

  • Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System Offering 3 Inches of Drop for Travel Trailer and 2016 Ram
For a Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution system that will offer you 3 inches of drop, you will want to use a SwayPro system that comes with the longer weight distribution shank. For example, if you need a system that is rated for up to 1,500 pounds tongue weight and 15,000 pounds towing weight, the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control, 13 Inch Rise/7-1/2Inch Drop # BXW1506. This system is designed for tongue weights between 1,000 - 1,500 pounds and offers a maximum 7-1/2...

Everything you picked out is compatible. The Adjustable Ball Mount part # AM3298 would fit a 2-1/2 inch hitch with the adapter part # BX88187 that you mentioned and could be secured in place with the hitch pin part # PC3.

  • Is It Safe To Pull My 6,000lb Travel Trailer With A Trailer Hitch Reducer?
If you are using a reducer sleeve such as Curt Reducer Sleeve 2-1/2" to 2" # C45405 or Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # BX88187, then you will not have an issue as this style does not typically reduce the towing capacity and you will simply go by the towing capacity of your vehicle and hitch. However, you will want to look up that exact model/brand reducer or provide us with the information to make sure that there is no reduction in towing capacity. If you are...

  • Can Blue Ox 2-1/2" to 2" Reducer BX88187 Be Used For a Weight Distribution Hitch On a Ram 2500?
The Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # BX88187 you were looking at does not reduce the capacities of your trailer hitch receiver and it is perfectly compatible with the Blue Ox BXW1200 weight distribution hitch. This is the most cost effective way to transfer your weight distribution hitch from your Nissan Armada with a 2" receiver to your Ram 2500 with a 2-1/2" receiver. Since they both have the same hitch height the rise or drop setting of the shank will be correct,...

  • How to Tow a Horse Trailer Behind a 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty with a Camper Extension of 48"
Four feet of clearance is quite a bit, but there is one configuration that I found that might work. Since you have a 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty, you probably have a 3" receiver. With this, you can add the TorkLift Cannon Hitch Extension, part # TLE1636. This will extend 36" out. It's max towing weight is 3600 pounds and the max tongue weight is 360 pounds. However, with a weight distribution system, those are increased to 7200 pounds and 720 pounds, respectively. So, you will need to weigh...

  • Recommended 7" High to Low Hitch Adapter for a Flat Towed Vehicle
Sure Joe, you'll just want the the Blue Ox High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars - 2-1/2" Hitches # BLU53XR with the reducer sleeve # BX88187. This adapter has 7" of drop (or rise whichever way you want to use it), measures 15 1/4" long, and has a nice 12.5K capacity. Also, the reducer sleeve is needed to convert the adapter to work with a 2" hitch, because it is traditionally made for a 2 1/2" hitch.

  • Recommended Solution to Carry Yakima Ridgeback on 2-1/2 Inch Hitch
I have a solution for you to use a Yakima Ridgeback like the # Y02459 on a 2-1/2" receiver, but there is not an actual adapter for the shank. Instead, you'll need to use a hitch reducer like the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # BX88187 to reduce your 2-1/2" receiver down to a 2" receiver. This will allow you to carry the Ridgeback on your vehicle with the 2-1/2" receiver.

  • Hitch Adapter for 2-1/2 inch Hitch of 2020 Ram 2500 for Less Noise
The Blue Ox 2 inch to 2.5 inch hitch adapter part # BX88187 doesn't have a collar on it and fits flush with the hitch opening so it would work better with your current anti-rattle and we've also found that it's a tighter fit in general which allows less movement. I attached a review video link for this for you to check out as well.

The Blue Ox Sway Pro Weight Distribution System part # BXW1006 does not come with a 2-1/2" shank. Therefore, you have two options which would be to use a 2-1/2" to 2" adapter like the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve part # BX88187 or obtain a separate 2-1/2" shank like the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4900. The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System part # BXW2000 would be much too large for an 8,000 lb trailer.

There are two ways you can convert the 2-1/2" receiver on your 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. We don't have a 2-1/2" to 1-1/4" adapter, so these are the only options. The first way is less stable. It involves using two adapters: the Blue Ox 2-1/2" to 2" Reducer Sleeve, part # BX88187, and the Brophy 2" to 1-1/4" Reducer, part # HT02. • Can you Use the Brophy Hitch Extender to Tow a Travel Trailer
It looks like the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender, part # HR26, could work for your application based on the numbers. However, this isn't something I recommend for you since the addition of an extender not only reduces your towing capacity, it also adds more sway than you want with a 30-ft. trailer. Instead, it would be better to increase the length of your weight distribution's shank (or the length of your ball coupler if your WD hitch attaches with a coupler). A good one is the Blue...

I went out into our warehouse to measure the wall thickness of the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve # BX88187 that you referenced and found that it measures 1/4 inch thick.
