We were looking for a solution to haul our utv when pulling our camper. This extender allowed us to leave the tailgate down and still have enough clearance to not damage the tailgate. Downside--this extender amplifies the amount of movement with the hitch. This is more than a simple hitch clamp could fix. I added several modifications to completely eliminate the hitch movement. We have taken several trips since the installation and no issues with pulling the trailer. We did have to extend the safety chains about 4 links. Overall a good product and it accomplished the goal. As always, etrailer personnel are knowledgeable, easy to deal with and have quick shipments.

The hitch extender is working well for us. We just finished our second season of camping with no issues.

@JonW We're glad to hear that! Keep in mind that using the reducer/extender will lower the weight capacity of your hitch by 1/3.

Works as it should and I didn't have to turn my power jack on my camper 90 degrees to miss the tailgate when it is lowered!!

It has been holding up very well and I would recommend it to any one.

My delivery package was ripped open and the contents missing thanks to USPS. The courier should have never deliverd the package in that condition. When I called etrailer customer service I could not have asked for a more responsive solution. Carol immediately asked if I wanted them to send out another order at no additional charge and I agreed. I also asked her if she would ship using a different carrier and she said that would be no problem. I promptly recieved my second package undamaged with the contents safe inside. I am extremely satisfied with the product and I cannot say enough for the excellent customer service I recieved. I would definetly recommend etrailer to anyone and I will be using them again in the future.

My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns.

The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others.

by:

I ordered this hitch extender because my new 2024 Vexus VX21 bass boat has a ladder installed on the trailer. If you back up too sharp in one direction you will push step 2 clean through your truck rear bumper on the right side. I have problems with co-angles not listening to me and not focusing when backing my boat into and taking out of a ramp. This Brophy Hitch Extender was the perfect solution and it is exceptionally well constructed. Thank you as this now gives me piece of mind that my bumper will not be destroyed.

by:

Great advice on what I was looking for - easy site to complete order - installation instructions were simpler to follow - delivery was within 24 hours of order! Great job!

by:

Great to deal with. The first package delivered by USPS was empty with a big hole in the box. Called Etrailer and they immediately sent my ordered item by UPS. Outstanding service! I will definitely buy from them again.

by:

Perfect fit, needed extension to insure boat trailer steps would clear tailgate and bumper of my Truck when towing boat. Worked out great. Fast shipping from etrailer prevented me from missing out on fishing trip. Great service, thanks etrailer.

by:

The hitch adapter solved my problem of hitting my tail gate while making sharp turns.

by:

I purchased this to use on my 2500HD to transition from the factory 2.5" receiver to a 2" so that we could use a Yakima hitch mounted bike rack. With the length of the tube, it also provides the perfect amount of clearance from the back of the truck so that I can lower the tailgate without it hitting the upright on the bike rack. Great product and always pleased with etrailer's customer service!

by:

Reducer/extender was thrown into a box ,no padding. Broke through box during delivery. Luckily my postal carrier put 2 and 2 together and I got it. Pretty disappointing from etrailer.

by:

Fast delivery, solid gear. This is not only a 7" extension, but an adapter from 2 1/2" to 2" receiver to use equipment that I already have such as bike carrier and vise insert. Works great! I opted for the heavier version (why not) in case I needed to tow a small trailer. As always, very pleased with etrailer and their support.

by:

Heavy duty, finish has held up well to 1yr of consistent use and I'm happy with the purchase.

by:

Lowed me to keep the tail gate down and pull my travel trailer behind without buying a very expensive system

by:

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product.

by:

Works great when used with anti rattle hitch locks for my carry on hitch basket and my Saris bike rack. Would definitely recommend. Allows me to drop my tailgate with the bikes on the tack.

by:

Excellent service, helpful and friendly. Delivery was quick and with no issues.

by:

Worked perfectly.
Thank You

by:

Great product. Exactly what I needed. Hard to find anywhere else. Have used it a lot for a year now and it has worked perfectly.

by:

well made i will see how it holds up in the next week or so

by:

Bought this to extend my bike rack away from the truck camper door. Added a anti rattle clamp and yhe setup has been perfect.

by:

quick and accurate. great experience.

by:

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains.

Working with etrailer.com was great. I worked with Madison and she was knowledgable, professional and very helpful. Got what I needed and it was delivered earlier than expected! I highly recommend etrailer.com!

Product is very high quality. There was a small shipping delay, but etrailer was excellent at keeping me informed of the delay and when to expect product. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

  • Can The Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 Be Used as Only a Reducer Without an Extender?
To verify if you will be able to use the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 as both an adapter and a reducer you will need to measure your current receiver. The hitch pin center hole to the weld on the tube is 1-1/2" and 9-1/2" from the center pin hole to the end of the tube. I have included an image below with the measurements for you. If your truck will allow for those measurements you will be able to use this as both an extender and a reducer. Otherwise you will need the Reducer...

  • What is the Overall Length of the Kuat Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve # KU93VR?
I can definitely dispel any confusion you have. Like the video, I confirmed with Kuat that the total length of the Kuat Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Hitch # KU93VR is 6-1/4" long. I went ahead and attached a diagram that shows this measurement. As far as what length you need for the 2-1/2" receiver on your 2019 Ford F-350, this sleeve will sit flush with the opening of your hitch receiver. This is because the sleeve has elongated side holes that you can adjust to get the...

The 18" Combo Bar with 2-1/2" Trailer Hitch Receiver - Unpainted # C49511 is designed for hitch fabrication and will not fit inside your 2-1/2" receiver as it is the same side of the receiver. We do have a Trailer Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 which fits your 2-1/2" receiver and will extend the hitch pin hole out 7" to a 2" receiver. Currently all of our 2-1/2" extenders are also reducing the receiver to a 2" opening. The adapter will reduce your receiver capacity by 1/3rd and gives...

  • Recommended Pintle Hook Tow Bar
I have a different option, but the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 with the Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted Forged Tow Eye # TR63045 is not designed to be used to adapt your Blue Ox Ascent tow bar to a pintle hook, and as such I do not recommend doing so as it will would void your tow bar warranty, and not be very stable. The only option to use a tow bar with a pintle hook is using a dedicated tow bar designed that way like the Blue Ox Allure Tow Bar # BX7460P that you mentioned....

  • Is There 2-1/2 inch Hitch Adapter that Doesn't Add Length to Hitch Setup
Hey Doug, we do have the Gen-Y Adapter part # 325-GH-007 which is a sleeve style adapter that fits into a 2-1/2 inch hitch and reduces it to a 2 inch hitch without adding any extension. It sounds like this is what you are looking for.

  • Solution For Extending Weight Distribution Hitch On 2018 GMC Sierra 2500
You can use the setup that you mentioned: Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch 7" # HR26 and Curt Weight Distribution Shank 14" # C17122. Both of these are rated for well over what your trailer weight and tongue weight will be so you won't have an issue there. One thing to note here is that the Brophy Reducer will reduce your trailer hitch receiver's overall capacity by 1/3. Your 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 Hitch should be rated for more than enough so this likely won't...

That will really depend on how long you are needing the step to be. All of the hitch steps we offer are designed for 2" receivers, so to be able to use one of these with the 2-1/2" receiver on your 2018 Ram 2500 I first recommend the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 which will give you an extra 7" of extension. A Reducer is needed to work with the rack, you may need an anti rattle device for the reducer to the hitch that is 2.5" as well. This will minimize any movement that may occur when using the added Reducer. I suggest using the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long Part # HR26, with the XL Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-1/2" Hitches - 3-1/2" Span Part...

  • Does Using A Hitch Extender Reduce the Capacity of a Trailer Hitch
Yes, anytime you use a hitch extender or reducer like # HR26 you will lose about 1/3 of your hitches overall capacity. However, since you'll be towing a trailer that weighs between 4,500 to 5,000 lbs, the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 will still work fine because it has a 5,000 lb max capacity. In all honesty, even with the 1/3 capacity reduction on a class V hitch you'd still be in good shape for what you're wanting to do.

  • 12 inch Long Hitch Tube Recommendation that has a 2 inch Opening
The Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 has a tongue weight capacity of 500 lbs. I have a better solution for you since this was not designed for welding to a bumper. For a product that is very similar that is designed to be welded and used as a hitch opening check out the Combo Bar 12" with 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-11. This is also 12 inches long. Brophy hitch extender and reducer # HR26 is indeed rated for use with weight distribution. However, the use of this extender reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 1/3. The shortest hitch extender that we have which is compatible with a 2-1/2 inch receiver on your tow vehicle is the Hitch Box Extension and Reducer # RP45292. It has an adjustable length of 24" - 34", reduces the receiver to a 2" x 2" opening, and is rated for 8,000 lbs when used with a Weight Distribution system. • Hitch Reducer to Convert 2-1/2 Inch Receiver to a 2 Inch
This is simple fix. You'll just need a hitch reducer that will shim the 2-1/2 inch receiver down to 2 inches. I'd recommend using part # BWRHXA2182 from B&W. What I really like about this reducer are the pinches placed in the end of the adapter that ensures the adapter won't slide into the 2-1/2 inch receiver so far that the hitch pin holes won't line up.

It is not recommended to use more than one hitch adapter at any given time. One hitch adapter ends up cutting the capacity of the hitch it's used in by 50 percent due to added leverage and movement. A better option for a cargo carrier solution would be the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Carrier part # CC-255 which attaches to the a-frame rails of the trailer and gives you a platform carrier you can carry above the trailer. Please note that using this extension will reduce your hitch's weight capacity by one third.
