My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns. The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others.

- HR26
by:

I purchased this to use on my 2500HD to transition from the factory 2.5" receiver to a 2" so that we could use a Yakima hitch mounted bike rack. With the length of the tube, it also provides the perfect amount of clearance from the back of the truck so that I can lower the tailgate without it hitting the upright on the bike rack. Great product and always pleased with etrailer's customer service!

- HR26
by:

Should work great, well built. Now I can lower my tailgate when towing. Just be sure not to overload your tongue weight capacity. This particular extender will reduce tongue weight capacity by 1/3.

- HR26
by:

Did exactly what I needed. New truck 2.5” receiver and 2” bike rack. This was perfect length. Allows me to fully drop tailgate without hitting. I have a Kuat NV2.0. No wiggles no coming loose no rattle. Ashley was awesome and got it out to me ASAP. Love etrailer.

- HR26
by:

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product.

- HR26
by:

I pull an 8,000lb camper with a 900lb hitch weight. I us an equalizer hitch, and after adding this extender (F250 has 2 1/2" hitch) I'm able to fully open my tailgate that was previously hitting the front jack. I don't notice in difference in pulling, even on the freeway at 75 mph. Made heavy duty, would recommend.

- HR26
by:

Perfect as hitch extender for Thule bike rack on a large receiver.

- HR26
by:

exactly what I needed to clear my tailgate and serve as a reducer

- HR26
by:

Would have liked to have had 3” to 2.5” to fit my F350. With an adaptor it will work fine. I think quality is very nice but the price is really high for what it is. It did solve my problem of loading ATV in bed of truck with tailgate open and still hook up my bumper pull trailer.

- HR26
by:

Product arrived early which allowed us to use our bike rack for the weekend. Fits a Ford Super Duty 2.5” hitch as stated.

- HR26
by:

After 1 year of frequent towing and hitch changes, this hitch lock is still working well!

- HR26
by:

Exactly what I needed. Extends my hitch back 7 inches. Good quality.

- HR26
by:

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains.

Ita a great hitch/adapter to have but remember to tell your customers that you can not recess the adapter all the way in to the first pin whole cause the spare tire gets in the way.

- HR26
by:

I only use this for a bike rack. The extension makes it easy to open the tailgate without interfering with the bikes. The quality is excellent.

- HR26
by:

Works great, as advertised. Very well c onstructed.

- HR26
by:

Works as intended. Needed to extend the hitch just a few inches so the tailgate of my truck would not hit the trailer tongue jack. Needed the higher rating of this unit for my 8000# trailer. I only give 3-stars because after only 1/2 a Michigan winter it is already badly rusted. I will have to have it blasted & repainted in the Spring.

- HR26
by:

Well built and strong. I think I ordered the 8 inch but I wish there was other size options. With 8 inch hitch on my 6000 pound trailer I felt lots of clunking back there while towing on Mtn roads. I may cut the adapter shorter and re-drill the hole. I only needed 4-5 inches so my tailgate would open with my old camper. I also bought hitch clamps from hits clam.com which helped.

- HR26
by:

Part works perfectly and was actually delivered 1 day ahead of promised delivery date. Great customer service!

We bought a Thule EasyFold XT 2 bike rack for our 2017 Ford F-250. I wanted a reducer and extender that would allow me to open the back cap and lower the tailgate without doing anything to the rack. This was the perfect answer.

- HR26
by:

This works perfect on my Ram 2500 to extend my hitch for my trailer toy hauler. I can now load my Polaris ATV in truck bed and keep the tailgate down and still hook up and unhook and haul trailer. Very solid piece of steel and well coated to prevent rust.

Hi Blaine, Thanks for your feedback! I would recommend using the XL Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-12 inch Hitches, part # SHP2040-XL
XL Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-1/2" Hitches - 3-1/2" Span

, to help reduce the amount of rattling in the receiver.

The Hitch Reducer works fine, my only complaint is it has a lot of play between the hitch and reducer. Tried to shim, my Thule bike rack really moves around going down the road. When you hit a bump rally jars the bike rack. Also wish it had another adjustment hole, I have a new dodge 2500 hits the spare tire, if it would extend farther into the receiver this may help with the play in the reducer. Service was great though

- HR26
by:

Looks like it's going to be a good product for me. The right length extension plus it eliminates the need for the factory sleeve to reduce from 2 1/2 to 2 inches.

Ask the Experts about this Brophy Hitch Adapters

  • Can you Use the Brophy Hitch Extender to Tow a Travel Trailer
It looks like the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender, part # HR26, could work for your application based on the numbers. However, this isn't something I recommend for you since the addition of an extender not only reduces your towing capacity, it also adds more sway than you want with a 30-ft. trailer. Instead, it would be better to increase the length of your weight distribution's shank (or the length of your ball coupler if your WD hitch attaches with a coupler). A good one is the...

I went out the warehouse and measured Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch part # HR26 and it measures 2-1/2" from the center of the front hole to the front end of the receiver. It also measures 2-1/2" from the center of the back hole to the end of the extension. The distance from the center of front hole to the center of the back hole is 7" and the overall length is 12". • Determining if 7" Extender Can Be Used with Long Shank Ball Mount for 10,000 Pound Trailer
There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when determining if you will be able to safely tow your trailer using the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 The first is that when using the adapter the capacities on your trailer hitch will be reduced by one third. This is actually fairly generous as most other similar options reduce these capacities by a full 50 percent. This just means if your trailer hitch has a 12,000 pound towing weight capacity and a 1,200 pound tongue...

Brophy hitch extender and reducer # HR26 is indeed rated for use with weight distribution. When used with weight distribution this reducer is rated for 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 1,000 pounds tongue weight. However, the use of this extender reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 1/3. So for example if your trailer hitch tongue weight capacity is 1,000 pounds it would be reduced to 667 pounds when using the extension. The other option is to use a 2-1/2 inch...

  • Availability of Longer Weight Distribution Shank so Tailgate Can Fully Open
Using the # HR26 with a weight distribution kit isn't recommended because the extender will lower the hitch tongue weight capacity by one third, so I wouldn't advise using an extender. A weight distribution system exerts huge amounts of leverage to raise the front and lower the front of the tow vehicle. An extender would provide a weak link in the chain that could lead to an unsafe situation. You didn't mention how much additional length you need or the specific drop you needed, but...
