Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.
We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.
This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.
You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.
Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

Tighten up your connection. This hitch receiver immobilizer keeps your tow bar, drop receiver, bike rack and other hitch-mounted accessories from rattling and shifting while you're on the road.I use this with a Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III and it works great - it completely eliminates any 'wiggle' between the hitch and the ball mount. I had to grind away a bit of the immobilizer because it was interfering with the ball mount - no biggie. The attached photo shows where I removed a bit of the bracket.
Completely eliminated the rattle of the hitch. Very robust and I like that it has two u-bolts rather than just one like several competing products. I have tried one of those with one bolt and it didn't completely eliminate the rattle.
This product did a really good job of stabilizing my motorcycle carrier , and keep it from rocking. I had used another product before this , but it did not work nearly as good as this one. This one holds the receiver solidly to the hitch ,and is good quality.
Like others have said, this works great. Super easy to put on the hitch and tightened up the slop in my hitch extender. Not the cheapest hitch immobilizer but I didn't want to waste money on one that wouldn't work and then end up ordering this one. As always, etrailer shipped it right away and it arrived a day early. This is a good product, I doubt you will be disappointed if you order it.
Does not work on Draw-TITE-Frame DT84MR and blue ox absolutely no help
These really work! It's great to not have the wiggle in the hitch. There is no noise that comes from the hitch anymore moving around in the receiver. The one thing to think about is that even though it is easy to attach, once it is on, it's not simple to take off. Since I am using this on my towbar with my motorhome, I now just leave the towbar attached to the motorhome rather than taking is off and storing it in one of the storage bins. I just use my towbar cover now all the time when the towbar is not in use. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to eliminate the noise and wiggle that you get from your hitch.
Not quite heavy enough. Soft steel u-bolts & nuts kept vibrating loose, with or without lock washers. It felt easy to strip threads, be careful & don't over-torque!
Not sure why but the welded lip "ripped" off the plate. Towing 8500 tow behind on and off highway. I am not sure of the milage but I would say 600 miles of highway and 100 miles of washboard / logging roads between 2 trips. For the price I will NOT be rebuying or suggesting it to anyone else. I will just replace the hitch after the pin hole becomes too oblong to use.
High quality product. Installed on the towbar and extension. Does not move! Thanks for the great service.
The hitch immobilizer has kept our Blue Ox tow bar tight for over 11,000 miles and eliminated the hitch rattle. Very well built product and good investment.
This product does exactly what it claims to do. Unlike stabilizers that provide pressure in only one direction, this Blue Ox product provides pressure in a vertical and horizontal direction. Therefor, the hitch is forced into a corner and completely immobilized. in addition, since "U" clamps are used and not bolts, there is no possibility of bolts shifting or bending. The Blue Ox receiver immobilizer design and quality is worth its high price.
Depending on your application, you may want to consider the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061. We have had very few customer complaints with the Roadmaster products quality. This anti-rattle works in the same way as the Blue Ox, just a slightly different design.
--Perfect, again. Really appreciate the excellent installation support, quick shipment and perfect fit.
I haven't used this item yet but I can't see it not working under normal use. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the included nuts not being a nylock type. The ones included have the built in washer that has serrations on it to provide the locking action. I have used this type of nut before and have had them come loose. The instructions do advise to check them after so many miles but if it comes loose it could have done fell off. I will check the nylocks I get to put on it in the same manner. But if there is some looseness to take out I am more confident the nut will still be there to tighten. And I will pack a few spares. Can never be too prepared out on the road!
Works very well ! Only wish I had found this product sooner, like 20 years ago. No more stares when passing through town, no more loud hitch rattle sounding like sledge hammer on plate steel. We will see how the nuts hold up after repeated use. But have plenty on hand to replace if needed. Thanks CD
The device really works and increases handling safety. Hitch slop was allowing my flat tow to move 1 inch either way sideways whenever it pleased (hit a bump or whatever), this set up a series of necessary steering corrections, while the two vehicles moved back and forth influencing each other. The process was quite frightening actually! I reached out to blue Ox for help and they suggested The Immobilizer might help . The tech support agent said I had to immobilize both the receiver and the 10 inch drop receiver I had. so I bought and installed two. I tightened up both and removed all play with dramatic results. I blame the Largest rv dealer in Florida for installing the hitch the way they did. They chose the components and charged me $2500. They obviously should know 2 inches of total slop at the hitch point was a total disaster! Even I know that now! I was a novice then. I know better now. I can't fault Blue Ox This product should be used more. John K. Boone Florida
I tow a vehicle behind a 35' RV. With the rear view camera I could watch the vehicle sway as much as 6 inches side to side when changing lanes and I could also feel a pull from side to side during lane changes. I bought two of your hitch stabilizers and put one at the receiver on the motorhome with the second one at the end of the extension hitch, where the tow bar is attached. The car is now rock solid and does not sway from side to Side in the slightest. I can see it, and feel it. I would recommend this product to any RV owner. To me it is a safety feature that takes some of the stress out of long days on the road in a 35 ft. RV with a Ford Edge behind it.
In my Jeep Grand Cherokee, every hitch noise was broadcast loudly straight into the cabin. (My son, who tows with a pickup truck, couldn't believe the racket and thought that there must be a hitch-failure problem.) It was tolerable until traveling a washboard section of the NYS Thruway near Syracuse; ow, ow, ow, ow, ow! Something must be done! This product did it, and towing a trailer is now amazingly smooth and quiet. I'm so glad I got one.
This did the job in stopping the rattle of the hitch in the receiver when towing my utility trailer!
This product works very well, but from the first time use and each one following it becomes more difficult to work with. The lock nuts and U-bolts screw threads tend to become weak with each use and eventually the threads become damaged (stripped). The washers also tend to expand with each use due to tightening and become difficult to remove from the U-bolts. I'm still using it and replacing hardware as necessary. Would be great if every use were like the first. In my opinion, it is high priced given the quick wear and tear. It would be great if it came with a double set of hardware, minus the main anchor block. Then it would be better priced.
It definitely stops the rattling. I move it between two cars and for one of the cars, did not fit because I have very little spacing between the receiver and the hitch and where the safety chains latch to the receiver - rectified by cutting a small corner off of this item which was no problem with a jigsaw. Highly recommended product.
This product was good for about a month. Then when the paint under the nuts started chipping off it got loose. I then tried to tighten it a little more and the plates started to bend in and could never really keep it tight and loosening up. This would make the hitch clunk badly when turning my travel trailer in either direction, so I stopped using it. It's a good concept, but not as strong as I was expecting. Needs to be stronger for the price.
Looked promising, but did not work for me. As with some other similar items I've tried, the nuts become loose despite using Locktite Red. Even tried Gorilla Glue, no-go. If tightened more, to 65 ft-lbs, the metal on the clamp bends, and nuts still work their way loose quickly. Threads are not long enough to put a second nut on it for locking. It may work for some applications, but not for my 9000 pound Keystone trailer. Still looking for something that will work. JD in Colorado
My brand new F 150 had a sloppy reciever....no matter what brand hitch I used. This little device put an absolute stop to that fraction of a second "bump" whenever I accelerated or braked. I feel a lot safer now.
All components very well made and solid, with good finish. Delivery packaging offered good protection. Installation instructions clear. Service from etrailer.com was excellent - questions answered fully and promptly before order placed, price promise to match other supplier prices honored, order out for delivery within 24 hours with tracking information, and e-mail sent immediately after products delivered with supplier product info and instruction PDFs all gathered together in one place.
The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II was delivered on the scheduled date. Within minutes, I had installed the device on the hitch of my pickup truck. Installation was a piece of cake, and the Immobilizer works exactly as advertised. There is no more rattle or movement associated with my hitch. PS -- I'm glad I took the time to read the Q&As associated with anti-rattle devices before placing my order. Several of the devices that I had looked at on the web site were not to be used for towing, and the Q&As provided the relevant explanation. The Blue Ox device was recommended for towing, which is why I purchased it. I expect it to be in use for the life of my truck. Very pleased!
