Video Transcript for Malone Hitch Anti-Rattle - Standard Anti-Rattle - MPG908 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Malone anti-rattle hitch lock system. This unit's designed to stop movement between the receiver tube of your hitch and the accessory that's installed inside the hitch. It's great for eliminating rattle and wobble. It installs quickly and easily. The unit's going to feature a nice heavy-duty steel construction with corrosion-resistant coating, so you don't have to worry about rust or corrosion buildup. It's going to come with all necessary hardware for your installation.

It comes with detailed installation instructions to walk you through the installation process step by step. The unit can be installed from the top like this or from the bottom as needed, depending on the hitch installation and the room that's available. What I want to do just to make it a little easier is simply show you how it installs and how effective it is. It's a really simple process, so I have a hitch here, and I simply have a ball mount installed inside of it. I just want you to notice that we do have a lot of play inside the receiver tube of the hitch. So this system, this Malone anti-rattle hitch lock system, is really going to help take out any play, rattle, and wobble that we may have. Again, I did mention that it can be installed from the top like this, or it can be installed from the bottom.

For this application, I'm going to install it here on the bottom. So what you would do is place the plate where you want it. The U-bolt goes over the shank of the accessory that's installed in your hitch. Then you simply just need to install the hardware. We're going to place on the flat washer, followed by the split lock washer, and then we'll place the nut on there.

We'll go ahead and get that started. Go ahead and get it hand tight. We're going to repeat that for the other side as well. So the way that this unit works is part of that plate makes contact with the bottom of the receiver tube of the hitch. The other part of the plate makes contact with the shank of the accessory that's in the hitch. Then the U-bolt makes contact with the shank of the accessory as well.

As you tighten, basically with it in this position, the U-bolt is putting downward force on the shank, and the bracket is putting upward force on the bottom of the receiver tube. So it's like it's sandwiching together, which is going to draw the shank to one end or one side of the receiver tube. That's going to be what really takes out the rattle and play from within the hitch. Then all we have to do is tighten up the hardware. I do like to ensure that it's evenly tightened on both sides. So you can just work your way from side to side until you feel like it's evenly tightened. Then if we try to shake that accessory, you can see that we don't have any play within that receiver tube. That's going to do it for today's look at the Malone anti-rattle hitch lock system.

I employed 3 receiver-hitch accessories to enhance my existing cargo platform--an 18" hitch extension, so I could drop truck tailgate, cargo bag, and anti-rattle device. All have worked very well during trips to Arizona, Colorado, etc. I used scrap wood to build a box to support the bag. I'm satisfied with the bag, it's been water- and dust-proof, and the zipper seems to be heavy duty. Anti-rattle device works well. etrailer was very helpful in defining appropriate receiver extension length and weight capacity--critical to safe usage, and very complicated to calculate. The only limitation now is that unlike some high-end bike racks that have a few inches of rise in the platform/rack, the potential for my platform to drag on uneven surfaces (drive ways, 4wd trails, etc.) is a challenge. I perceive the "problem" to be that most accessories that could provide adequate rise in the platform will also reduce weight capacity of platform. Ideas welcome! I'm also using an 8" hitch extension to allow use of tailgate while towing a small camping trailer.

Comments
You cannot use an extension and a riser at the same time, unless they are built together. The closest riser we have to the 18 inch you need is this item # MT70070
MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches - 12" Long
$46.12
which is 12 inches long but it gives you a 6 inch rise, assuming you have a 2 inch hitch receiver. You can only use the bottom opening for towing your trailer but you can use the top opening for your cargo box. All extensions will cut the weight capacity in half. In this case, the 400 tongue weight would to 200 for the cargo box. I would get a roof rack and put half of my luggage on it just so you do not run into any weight capacity issues.

I can’t believe how much quieter it is pulling my boat now! Very easy installation, less than 5 minutes! You guys need to advertise these more, put them on your front page. I never knew they existed, until my fishing buddy ordered one 2 weeks ago.

I put the trailer hitch "tightener" on my distribution hitch that had a lot of movement, the slight 1/16 in movement left/ right /up/ down made a lot of noise and contributed to my trailer swaying. Once I installed it, in under ten minutes, I could not budge the hitch at all making for a nice tight fit, no noise, no added sway. I highly recommend this for anyone hauling heavy trailers for any distance.

Comments
It still works great, I never take the hitch off my truck so I do have to check the nuts before towing, but still no shifting of the trailer at all

An awesome addition to our hitch! Pulling our different trailers the 'clunk' from either stopping or starting is non existent now thanks to this small but significant addition. Shipping was quick, as usual, and the customer service personnel were great in understanding our needs as our past orders through etrailer are in the historical database. Thank you for all you do!

Stopped the rattle and play in my receiver hitch. Maybe one of my best purchases ever and I pull a trailer daily. I'd give up lots of things before the Malone Anti-Rattle Hitch System.

It’s been a year since I purchased anti.rattle bracket for my hitch. It’s worked out fine. I hated to hit a bump in the road and hear the hitch making noise. This product is worth the money.

This is the 2nd hitch-quieter I bought. I use this solely for the bike rack and it works very well. (on the back of the Crosstrek and also the back of fiberglass RV) I did try to use it on the Subaru Ascent for RV towing but it does not work as well. Still got a bit too much bounce and bucking vs. hitch-quieter with a crossbar style.

- MPG908

The anti rattle device pictured has a 1/2" U-bolt and the plate is 5/16" thick which makes it a very stout (meaning "not flimsy") tool for making the ball mount and receiver hitch into a one piece unit eliminating that clunking and rattling normally heard when starting, stopping and going over bumps. It's another example of how something so simple can be so useful. Since installing it, I've used the trailer on several runs and no longer have that rattling sound telescoping through the tow vehicle. I do consider it's purchase "money well spent for a quality product".

- MPG908

Quick delivery and very high quality. The plate is heavy and should be very durable. Works well to remove the rattle in my hitch just as advertised.

I bought this so my hitch wouldn't rattle/ I used it and when tightening so it would do its job the nuts and angle bent the metal shafts with the nuts on it. I used it for a trip and it would come loose. So I retightened it and used a second nut to stop the first one from coming loose(didn't work). I called and customer service was great and is great anytimeI call them. They sent me a second Anti- rattle system to replace the first. It does the same thing and I have just left it alone and just constantly retighten the nuts. It does work on having no rattle when it is tight. But after a ride or two you can still get noise but a little less than having nothing. I wouldn't buy this again but if you have it and are having the same issue I am having, well just think it could be worse.

I am very satisfied with this setup supplied by etrailer.com. FYI, don't skimp on getting this little (heavy duty) part as it keeps the racket down in the back. It can actually be considered a necessity in my opinion as without it there's a whole lot of clankin' and bangin' goin on without it. Just sayin. Thanks folks (at etrailer.com)

This little gadget is a must. It totally takes the rattle out of the hitch and instills a sense of security rolling down the road.

After installing, the hitch began to rattle. I torqued it again. Shortly thereafter, it began ratting again. This has been repeated many times now distorting the U bolt and it still rattles.

Only one side of the u-bolt was threaded. Useless product. Would not recommend to purchase.

I recommend Etrailer to anyone needing ANYTHING pertaining to trailers and hitches. These anti rattle brackets stopped all the noise coming from the back of our motorhome. I had to use an 18 inch extension which by the way is a BEAST and needed two anti rattle brackets. No more rattles! Etrailer suggested them and didn't try to sell me anything else. Really admire this company!

  • Need Larger Version of Malone MPG908 Anti-Rattle Device for 2-1/2 Inch Receiver
Malone doesn't make that particular anti-rattle device in a size for a 2-1/2 inch receiver, but might have a thing or two that could work for you. Take a look at the Gen-Y Anti-Rattle Clamp, part # 325-GH-063. The wedge portion is 1 inch long as you see in the photo, but it's tapered so it'll wedge in between the ball mount or hitch accessory shank and the receiver tube. The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch, part # RM-062 is another possibility, the u-bolt portion is 15/32 of an inch thick. From...

Instead I recommend the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches # RM-061-125 which will keep the accessories in your 1-1/4" receiver from rattling while you are driving. I included a video of the # RM-061-125 being installed for you to take a look at.
