Mount your bikes by the front wheels or the frames

Benton ShiftsandGrins ratcheting wheel hooks

Most platform racks grip your bikes by either the front wheel or the frame. A wheel-mount rack usually doesn't accommodate bikes with fenders, and a frame mount rack might scratch your valuable carbon bike. Benton took notice and built the Shifts&Grins with hooks that grab your bikes by either the front wheel or the frame. Now you don't have to be concerned about what type of bike you're loading. Just set your bike on the rack, rotate the hook over your front wheel or frame, and push it down until snug.

Front-mounted button for easy tilting and folding

Benton ShiftsandGrins Tilting and FoldingBenton ShiftsandGrins Tilting and Folding

The rack tilts down with your bikes loaded. So whether you're at the trail, in a parking lot, or pulled over on the side of the road while on a road trip, you won't have to remove your bikes to access your cargo area. It also folds up when you aren't carrying bikes, so you can keep the rack on your vehicle to park in your garage, or remove it and set it in your garage for storage.

Benton ShiftsandGrins button forfolding and tiliting

The Shifts&Grins is easier to tilt than many standard bike racks. Simply press the front-mounted button and use both hands to tilt it down and lift it back up. Since the rack is pretty heavy, and it's even heavier with your bikes loaded, this gives you more leverage so you won't get hurt handling all that weight.

Folding shank lets you stand the rack upright

Benton ShiftsandGrins safety release knob

Sure, other bike racks fold for storage, but the shank sticks out and you have to be careful that you don't trip over it while the rack is leaning against the wall in your garage. Benton built the Shifts&Grins to be more compact than those other racks. Just pull the release knob and fold the shank up against the rack. And in this configuration, the rack will stand upright on its own so it takes up even less space.

2-Bike add-on for a growing family

Benton ShiftsandGrins 2-bike add-on

It's just you and your partner hitting the trail now, but the kiddos are growing, and they'll be ready to go riding with you soon. There's an available 2-bike add-on (B34FR - sold separately) that converts the Shifts&Grins into a 4-bike rack. And the cool thing about it is you don't need any tools to put it on. Just slide the add-on over the base rack's push button on the front, tighten down the knob, and insert the pin. Yeah, it's really that easy. Then, when the two of you are ready to get away again, it's easy enough to remove the add-on and toss it in your garage.

Received yesterday, pretty simple to assemble. Like how compact it folds up for storage, like the flexibility to place the arms on the wheel or frame to secure the bike. It is heavy, but I was able to lift and attach it by myself. I was initially excited that it cleared my 2015 Jeep Wrangler JK's stock spare tire when folded up. But, my bike's pedal hits the spare tire (XL-sized MTB with 29" tires) so I had to use my hitch extension (already owned). No horizontal sway, but has some vertical sway at the hitch (with and without the extender) - but test drove it (bumps and hard braking) with no issues - but this is just my day 1 test. Thanks etrailer for all of the detailed videos on your bike racks - really helped me with the decision!

Heavy duty rack! Assembly instructions were good and easy to follow and assembly was pretty straightforward. All the parts seem like high quality and everything fit together. I got all my bikes on it and drove around a bit and I think it will work well for us. I put on a medium 26" bike, a medium 29er, a small 29er and a small 26" all at the same time and everything fit. Rack sits pretty high so I can get out of the driveway with a few inches to spare so that is nice. I used an Allen socket with ratchet wrench to make assembly easier instead of provided Allen wrench and recommend that.
I found placing the bar hook on the bike frame holds the bike steady better than just pushing it down on the wheel if your going to drive much distance I would do that. We will see how it performs but at least out of the box it seems good.
Came well packaged in perfect condition which I was a little worried about with shipping something so heavy across the country, but even though the box was a little beat up every thing inside was fine.

Every year my family picks a place for all of us to road trip for an adventure. This year was mountain biking in Bentonville Arkansas!

I have been biking for 30 years now and because I work at etrailer have used all the racks. For 4 bikes, or as a 2 bike this one is the one. Let’s be real, getting a family of 5 and extended family of 23 on a road trip is a shift show. The loading, unloading, pee breaks getting in and out is work.

This rack made a difference. The 2 bike extension attachment is far and away the easiest and simplest I have used. I was so surprised how easy it was I had my son try, and stopped a neighbor to try. Same result it took them about 20 seconds to get from 2 to 4 bike attachment.

Loading the bikes was easy not too much interference between seats and handlebars. Had to slide one set of cradles. Pretty easy stuff.

Then the tilting, fully loaded. The button and handle was easy. I’m not a spring chicken and didn’t have any trouble getting it tilted and back up.

For storage. It’s so easy to remove the extension I got to carry it in 2 pieces. So light enough to handle it. Normally carrying a 4 bike rack, that is 100+ pounds and an awkward shape to the garage is very challenging. 2 pieces of this rack was easy.

And it folds flat, game changer for the garage. Finally my rack doesn’t have to stick out for the whole family to trip over.

I am an etrailer employee that tested out the rack. This is a solid rack for the price. I did have a small issue with the hitch aligner working with my OEM ford explorer hitch but I was able to loosen the screws and move the hitch aligner to make it work.

  • What is the Weight Rating for the Benton Shifts&Grins 2-Bike and 4-Bike Racks
Thanks for reaching out, Daniel! The Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack has a 55 lb rating for all bikes both in the 2-Bike Version, part # B54FR, and the 4-Bike Version, part # B82FR. This is different than the standard platform bike rack on the market and it's definitely a positive for people needing to carry multiple heavier bikes like yourself.

  • Can e-Bike Be Loaded on Benton ShiftShow Bike Rack if Battery is Removed
Thanks for reaching out, Walter! The 40 lb per bike weight limit listed on the Benton ShiftShow Bike Rack # B94FR has to do with the strength of the cradles themselves, so if you were to load up a 47 lb bike you would still be overloading the cradle. For your application I recommend checking out the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack instead because it can handle up to 55 lb bikes. The S&G comes in both 2-Bike # B54FR and 4-Bike # B82FR versions depending on how many bikes you need to carry. I...

  • Is the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack Available in 4-Bike Setup
Hey Pete, thanks for reaching out! The Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # B54FR has the extension available as part # B34FR for when you're needing to carry more bikes. If you need to carry 3 or 4 bikes right out of the gate, then you need the part # B82FR instead, which is the 4-bike configuration of this bike rack. One of the great things about this 4-bike kit is that each bike position can handle up to a 55 lb bike as opposed to most other platform racks where the outer 2...

  • How to Lock Bikes to the Benton Platform Bike Rack
Hey Erin, thanks for reaching out! In order to lock your bikes to the Benton Platform Rack # B54FR you'll need to use a standard cable lock, and for that I recommend the etrailer Cable Lock # e98891 because it has a 10' length so you have enough to wrap around your bikes as well as the rack and your hitch safety chain loops if you'd like.

  • What is the Function of the Collar on the Shank of the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack
Hey Kate, thanks for reaching out! The black sleeve you're talking about on the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack # B54FR is a sweet feature built in to make it quicker to install the bike rack on your vehicle! Once you get your bike rack installed the first time, simple loosen the adjustment knob and slide the collar up against your hitch receiver before tightening the knob back down. When you remove your bike rack from the vehicle you'll leave that collar in place so next time you put the...

  • How Heavy is the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack for 4 Bikes
Hey Dawson, thanks for reaching out! The Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # B82FR weighs in at 114 lbs which is pretty average for a 4-bike platform rack. The nice thing is that the 2-Bike Add-On # B34FR can be removed pretty easily so you're eliminating 50 lbs, which means you're only left with 64 lbs for the standard rack # B54FR. I've had a chance to do this myself and can say that removing the 2-bike add-on is a lot more simple than other 4-bike racks on the market since...

  • Can the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack Hooks Secure Bikes by the Wheel and by the Frame
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out about the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack # B54FR! Most platform bike racks are able to only secure bikes by either the wheel OR by the frame. The Benton S&G has the arms and hooks positioned in the perfect spot to secure bikes either way, which makes this the perfect solution for someone with different bike styles (including bikes with fenders).

  • 2017 Jeep Wrangler Hitch Recommendation for Benton Shifts&Grins Spare Tire Clearance
Hey Ronald, thanks for reaching out! I recommend installing the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98856 on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler to carry the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack # B54FR. We actually had a teammate fit the rack and bikes on their 2017 Wrangler with the shorter etrailer # e98835 hitch (see attached photo) so with the one I recommended you'll have a bit more clearance for your bikes. The tire on the Jeep in the photo is a P285/70R17 size just for reference. This bike rack (and...

  • Are The Front And Rear Arms Interchangeable For The Yakima Dr. Tray Bike Rack
Hey Ted, The front and rear arms for the Dr. Tray bike rack are unfortunately different so there aren't interchangeable. I actually had someone else looking for this part not too long ago and was told by Yakima that it's discontinued with no stock left so you'd only be able to get a replacement secondhand at this point. I doubt you'll find it secondhand, or that it will be in good condition, so you're realistically looking at replacing the entire rack. If you do end up looking for a...

  • Is There A Locking Hitch Pin Available for The Benton Shifts & Grins Bike Rack
Hey Jeff, There unfortunately isn't a lock yet for the anti-rattle hitch pin that's included with the Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack # B54FR and there aren't any other hitch pin options confirmed to fit since this has a thread hole. To secure your bikes while unattended I recommend running a cable lock # e98891 through the bike(s), rack and safety chain loops on the trailer hitch.
