sport rider SE

The Sport Rider SE platform-style hitch bike rack makes it simple to carry 2 electric bikes on the rear of your vehicle. It features locking frame hooks and heavy-duty wheel holders with welded gussets to reinforce the rack so it can handle the extra weight. An anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the tube.

Locking, Ratcheting Hooks

ratcheting hooks

The Sport Rider SE uses locking frame hooks to secure your bikes. The ratcheting, cushioned hooks easily adjust along the vertical mast and lock securely in place. The release buttons allow each hook to slide up the ratcheting arm for bike removal. The hooks function independently, which means you can position them to carry bikes of different heights.

Adjustable Wheel Hoops

wheel hoops

The wheel hoops accommodate bicycles with wheelbases up to 60" by sliding along the horizontal arms. They secure in place with easy-to-use hand knobs, and ratchet straps fasten the wheels to the hoops. These universal wheel hoops will fit standard and fat tires up to 5" wide.

Folding, Tilting Design

tilting

The rack tilts, with or without bikes loaded, for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Simply remove the pivot pin, pull the bottom quick-release spring pin, and lower the rack.

folding

The rack also folds up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. To raise the rack, just pull the upper quick-release spring pin and lift.

Tool-Free Installation with Anti-Rattle System

The rack installs in your hitch without the need for tools. Simply slide the shank into your receiver until the welded stop plate contacts the hitch. The stop plate saves you from getting on your hands and knees to align the pin holes while inserting the hitch pin. Once the pin is in place, attach the lock pod. Lastly, use the integrated anti-wobble handle on the front of the shank to tighten the rack inside your hitch receiver and prevent it from rattling.

hitch tightener

It also comes with a hitch tightener to help reduce vertical wobble by pressing the shank against the receiver. It attaches to the top or bottom of the flange on your receiver using a U-bolt and clamp bar.

A removable adapter sleeve is included so the rack can be converted for use with 1-1/4" hitch receivers. The sleeve attaches to the shank with a single screw and can be installed or removed quickly.

Complete Security for Bikes and Rack

The lock cores in the frame hooks hold the bike down on the rack and prevent them from moving. Also, the lock pod attaches to the hitch pin to secure the rack to your vehicle. These locks are conveniently keyed alike. For extra protection, the 8' long security cable wraps through the bike frames, connects to the hitch pin, and is secured to the pin by the hitch lock.

I purchased this rack after testing out my friend's rack on my car. I liked the rack, especially the no-wabble hitch tightener. I paid extra to get the only 2-inch hitch available from etrailer for my Prius V. Then I ordered the this rack from etrailer. It took several weeks for it to arrive. Now the design of the rack has changed, allowing for both a 1-1/4 or a 2-inch hitch receiver. Gone is the no-wobble tightener that I really liked. Instead there is a u-bracket that must be installed with a wrench every time the rack is installed or removed. There is not enough clearance between my bumper and the hitch receiver, so I have to install it inverted. Now I need to keep a wrench with me for the four nuts and washers. The previous tightening system was thoughtful and enegantly incorporated into the rack. This new method is clumsy, looks bad, and is a hassle. Otherwise this is a good but heavy rack that does a good job for our two Rad Powerbikes.

Comments
I apologize for the changes in the bike racks, or perhaps your friends rack is under a different name now. etrailer.com loves to help people find their perfect rack to meet their needs. If you are ever in the market again for a rack, I think you would personally love this one: Item # Y02443.

Very heavy duty. The instructions say not to mount on a travel trailer or 5th wheel which is what I bought the bike rack for. My travel trailer rear receiver and bumper are rated for 300 lbs, so I don’t know why I can’t use it that way. Anyone, the product description should point out this limitation if you think it is legitimate or just a cover themselves from issues.

Its not easy finding a rack to accommodate a 72+ pound ebike with 4" tires for a 1.25" trailer hitch. Thule came close at 60 pounds. Thule is also a wheel mount and so I'd have to ditch my fenders. This version of the Sport Rider SE has a solid 1.25" bar with a threaded hole for the hitch pin plus a U-Bolt Hitch tightener and not the cool Hollow bar with internal loop and tightening crank. That was a point of confusion for me as I was expecting the loop and crank. Customer service clued me in to the difference (2" bar only) and the supplemental instruction page I failed to notice. The 5 minute estimated wait time was more like 2. They totally grocked what I was asking and set me on the right path. The bar and hitch make a VERY solid connection without any slop at all. The rest of the rack is very well made. No sharp edges or misaligned holes, everything fits, the nuts and bolts all threaded easily, the parts are all rugged and the instructions are very well done. I might add, nobody locally or online has this rack in stock. The expected shipping date was Oct 4. I was offered an alternative rack choice because of the wait- the Thule- but I really liked the specs and design of this rack and didnt want to compromise on the weight limit. To my astonishment it shipped out the very next day and arrived today! Customer service is epic. The website is also really user friendly for finding what you need.

Only rack available that could handle 2 70 pound ebikes. Assembly was pretty easy, maybe 90 minuets. Rack is big and strong, all steel construction. Bikes are very secure when I’m driving. Loading the bikes onto the rack is challenging. Lifting and positioning a heavy bike can be hard. Not for the feint of heart but everything about ebikes is more cumbersome. Linda at etrailer was great, helpful and took her time to make sure that I got the right product. Would definitely shop there again.

It's nice to be able to use this rack on both our vehicles. It is light enough that I, a 56 yr old woman, can install and maneuver all the functions alone. It takes a little bit to set up the rack for bikes placement but once it is set it is extremely simple to load and secure the bikes. The rack itself is extremely stable with minimal wobble.

I found this rack recommended for the Rad Power 4-inch-tire 65-pound behemoth electric bike, and it works nicely. Easy to install, solid, and it hold both the Rad and a road bike with skinny tires. Just what we needed.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Just received my rack and assembled it. I had a small issue with the bolt of the second rack but got it through eventually with a little hammering. Loaded all four bikes on the rack today and took it for a test drive. Very strong and steady. It looks really nice and so far I like it.

Comments
Rack is still solid and I like it very much. No issues at at all.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

This rack has all the bells and whistles of a much more expensive rack at a significantly better price. My 14 year old son put it together easily from the pictures (I had a harder time following the instructions) but between the two of us it didn’t take more than 30 minutes. It is super solid, holds the bikes very securely, and I love the built in locks for each bike, which you pay a lot more for with other brands. It’s just really solid and well designed. The photo shows the 2 rack configuration on my 2018 Honda Pilot. The rear door is able to open without having to put the rack down. My son and I are exploring the great mountain biking around Fort Collins and it’s great to have the bikes on in a minute and go. Thanks Noah for making this suggestion!

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Such a fabulous bike rack!! The rack is simple to mount onto the van’s hitch. It’s easy to add or take off the outer rack either before or after putting it on the hitch. The two part design is a great feature for taking a bike to the shop for repair, for when it’s just the two of us, or we can quickly add the second half for two more bikes. It folds up against the back of the van easily and securely. When needed it holds four adult bikes without any problems. Bikes are SO enjoyable to load onto this rack - way better than racks that support the bike by the frame. I have a Y frame bike so it was always challenging to load it onto a traditional rack. The tire supports move to accommodate any size bike. Bikes that have the lower frame get mounted closer to the vehicle for each section of the rack. The rack is stable when driving, even when fully loaded. The locking feature is nice, especially for when we’re away from home and the bikes stay on the rack overnight. Be careful when lifting as the rack itself is heavy.

Comments
Id buy it again in a heartbeat! Were about to take our third trip to the beach a 900 mile round trip with four bikes using this rack. Weve owned it for at least two years and it has stayed in great working order. The tire adjustments are still easy to use as are the locking mechanisms. We use it throughout the summers for day trips and its so simple to use our kids can get the bikes loaded.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I was surprised with how soon the rack arrived after I ordered it. Odelia was very helpful in placing my order and followed up with a couple of emails. The rack was packaged very nicely. Assembly was easy. My only nit was labeling of the front & back of the rack in the instructions was confusing. The back of the rack should be farthest from the vehicle and the front closest to the vehicle. Otherwise the assembly instructions were clear and assembly was smooth. I’m using this rack with a 41 pound e-bike. I’ve driven it around the neighborhood and I can’t wait until the COVID emergency is over to take a road trip with my bike using the rack.

Comments
It’s still great! And it’s easy to lock down the bike. One hint is to lock the arm that holds the frame do if you go over a bump, it doesn’t loosen up.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

My Hollywood ebike carrier arrived the day before yesterday and since it was too hot for me to be outside yesterday, I decided to try to tackle the thing all by myself.   Just for reference sake, I am 57 years old, 5' 2", 115 lbs and have had multiple sclerosis since I was 14 years old.   I used to be one strong little girl, but not so much anymore.  We purchased an Radwagon for me to get more exercise safely and then hubby got a Radrover. But transporting them wasn't going to be easy. I assembled this on the trailer hitch because I knew it would be too heavy for me to handle assembled. I not only got it assembled, I loaded our bikes!   It took about all I have, so this will not be a common occurrence for me, but I CAN do it!

Comments
Its great!! We use the carrier frequently and its easy peasy! Weve taken our bikes all the way to Sanibel, Hilton Head Island, and everywhere in between. Love it!

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Was a little concerned when I tried to pick up the shipping box and felt the substantial weight, but realized that to have a sturdy and stable rack, the materials have to be heavy. The assembly and adjustment process was easy and our bikes fit perfectly. The fold back feature allowed the hatchback to open fully with bikes attached. Took our Lexus RX out for a test drive over some bumpy roads and speed bumps and everything was rock steady. Excellent product! Very happy! Highly recommended!

We’re very happy with our rack after 1 year. Would make the same purchase again.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I've been using a Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike for many years however I needed to find a bike rack that would transport my wife's new Trek Verve +2 Lowstep E-Bike. Since it is a Step-through and weighs 52 lbs. with the battery, I was uncomfortable hanging the bike off the RidgeBack. I typically only transport 2 bikes however occasionally need to pack up 3 or 4 bikes. After much research, I decided on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE4. I loved the fact that I could take off the extension and make it a two back rack and appreciated the price. I was however concerned the E-Bike might be too heavy as the specifications note a 50 lb. per bike limit so I reached out directly to Hollywood Bikes. I asked if they thought it'd be alright to place the E-Bike closest to the vehicle with the battery removed. I heard back from them within 24 hours and they agreed, with the battery removed it would be fine. I ordered the SE4 on Monday morning and it arrived Thursday. It was well packaged and easy to assemble using the instructions. I had absolutely no issues and it went together perfectly. The rack is of very good quality and sturdy even when loaded up. I really like that the bikes can be locked down and everything, including the supplied cable is keyed alike. I was able set it up for only 3 bikes as that is all we're taking to Florida next week. I'll follow up after our trip.

A year later and my Sport Rider SE4 is still working great! Use mainly for two bikes but have hauled four several times.

Bought the rack to use with my 2014 BMW X1, thanks Mathew for your help, we loaded it up with 4 bikes ( one of them a heavy cruiser ), drove the car to mammoth Lakes which is 300 miles away. I was averaging 65 to 70 miles per hour, the bikes stayed secured and no noises. Great product !

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Solid. Heavy (but not excessively). Good design features. Takes a beating. Needs a few add-ons! I'd buy this again simply for the fact that it's a two-part system that can be used together or separately. And because I backed into a tree with it and bent it pretty good without rendering it unusable. My bad. Sorry tree... It's well made, and the manufacturer offers lots of replacement parts. That said... What's not perfect? The locks are kinda cheap. Just barely a detergent IMO. I really wish it was setup to accommodate a lighting system! I had to create my own or risk getting pulled over everywhere I went because using it blocks the license plate and makes your brake lights harder to see. I made my own with a trailer light strip and lighted license plate holder. Not pretty but works really well. Attaching the license plate to the rack was problematic since I'm not a welder. I do like not having my "cargo" on top of my SUV, and the rack acts as an extra table top in a pinch. Adding a second bike while the rack is full of cargo can be challenging. It's okay for a mountain bike and a road bike, but two mountain bikes... not so much. And to fit the second bike they had to make the footprint of the rack narrow in the middle. Okay for separate bins. No good for a single container... Another place where the manufacturer could offer a bin that fits into the space where others don't. Hope this helps.

Review from a similar Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

This bike rack is second to none especially in this price range. I MHO I think this item is superior to many other brands out there and I’m referring to the well known brands as well. I was impressed with the way it was packaged from the factory and by etrailer. The instructions were clear and it assembled easily. I took my time and probably completed it in under an hour. I didn’t think to take pics with the bikes on the rack but I wanted people with Jeep Wranglers to see how this looks. Notice that I also have a Yakima Back Swing on the Jeep as well. I’ve purchased things from etrailer in the past and can speak of the quality of the products they sell and of course the customer service.

  • Is Adapter Needed with Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for Step-Thru Frames
The padded ratcheting hooks on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack # HLY74FR that you were looking at can slide up and down the length of the vertical mast, so they should be able to grab onto the frame of a step-thru bike like yours. With that being said if the step-thru is more dramatic than most you may just need to add an adapter bar like # HRBA-PRO to create a horizontal attachment point for a secure connection. In either case I think a better option for your particular...

Because this secures the bikes via the frames, it won't effect the fenders on your bikes, but you will need to use a frame adapter bar like the # HRBA-PRO on the bike with the step through frame. The SportRider SE 2 has a massive 80-lbs per bike capacity and can handle...

  • How to Choose the Best E-Bike Rack
There are a wide variety of E-Bike racks that we carry and the best way in filtering through them is by looking at these points: Weight Capacity Style/Compatibility Pricing Weight capacity is important because it can vary between bike racks. For example, the best racks (in my opinion) for E-Bikes are the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY74FR (80 lbs per bike), the Thule EasyFold XT # TH903202 (65 lbs per bike), and the Kuat NV 2.0 Base # BA22B (60 lbs per bike). When factoring...

  • How To Use Hollywood Racks Sport Rider With Bike Friday Haul-a-Day Cargo Bike
The Hollywood Racks Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes part # HRBA-PRO would indeed be what you'd use to make the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 2 Electric Bike Rack part # HLY74FR compatible with bikes that have deep drop tube frames. It will accommodate bikes with up to 28" between the handlebar post and seat tube.

  • Best Platform Style Bike Rack Options For Two Surface 604 Rook E-Bikes
You do have options. There are two bike racks that will work for you. Both the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY74FR and the Swagman E-Spec # S94FR will both support your bikes as they both can carry 80 lbs per bike. These are your only options really. You can only have a platform style rack with these bikes and since your Surface 604 Rook e-bikes have fenders you can't use any wheel hook racks. So a frame hook platform style rack is what you need and these are the only two I recommend...

  • Recommended Hollywood Rack for a fat Tire E-Bike and a Regular Bike
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 2 E-Bike Rack part # HLY74FR is a great bike rack to accomplish your goals. While the cradles are more heavy duty and wider they are perfectly suited for use with standard weight and tires of normal bikes. The thing I like about this option should you upgrade to a different bike should it have fat tires or be an e bike you will not need a different rack.

  • E-Bike Rack Recommendation for 1-1/4 inch Hitch for Bikes that Weigh 70 lbs
We do have e-bike racks that have the capacity needed for your 70 lb bikes and can fit the 1-1/4 inch hitch size like you have with the Hollywood Racks E-Bike rack # HLY74FR but there won't be a way to add an e-bike rack to the cargo carrier you have now. The # HLY74FR is a really great solution for you and has an 80 lb per bike capacity which is the highest weight rating for an e-bike rack that we offer. I attached a review video for more info on this rack as well.

  • Will Hollywood Racks HR1450Z-E Sport Rider SE2 Bike Rack Require Frame Adapter Bar for Tern GSD Bike
Unless the bike has a step through frame like some women's bikes have, you won't need a frame adapter for the he Sport Rider SE # HLY74FR you looked at. I took a look that the Tern GSD online, and from the photos, the bike retention hook would grab the frame well before it bottoms out.

  • Why Cant Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 2-Bike Rack # HLY74FR Be Used on Class I Hitch
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 2 Electric Bike Rack # HLY74FR referenced in your question should indeed only be used on Class II 1-1/4 inch receivers or higher rated 2 inch receivers. The manufacturer has simply determined that this particular rack with bikes loaded puts too much leverage on a lighter duty Class I hitch that could cause damage during travel. As you mentioned in your question it's certainly possible to stay under the 200 pound tongue weight capacity of a Class I hitch...

  • Can 2 Bike Add-On Be Used With Hollywood Racks HLY74FR?
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # HLY74FR cannot accommodate the 2 Bike Add-On # HR1475Z since the bike rack is 1-1/4", but you CAN use the 2 bike add-on with Hollywood Racks Sport Rider # HLY84FR. This rack only fits 2" receivers which should be what you have on your 2014 Infiniti QX60 so you should be fine there. The 2 bike add-on has a weight capacity of 50lbs per bike while the Sport Rider Rack # HLY84FR has a weight capacity...

  • Could Hollywood Racks E-Bike Rack Fit 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler
Probably not but you'd need to take one measurement. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your Jeep Hitch out to the furthest point on the rear spare. If that measurement is less than 7-1/2 inches the Hollywood Racks E-Bike Rack # HLY74FR would fit without interference.

  • Which Bike Rack Will Work For Electric Bikes And Regular Non-Electric Bikes?
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes # HLY74FR will work very well for electric bikes and non-electric regular bikes. The tire trays are heavy duty and wider to accommodate the electric bikes, but will still allow regular bikes to be mounted without any issues or concerns. This has an impressive weight capacity of 80lbs per bike. There is not a way to convert this bike rack to a 4-bike carrier, however, you could go with Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 4 Bikes...
