HR1000Z-R bike rack

The Sport Rider platform-style hitch bike rack makes it simple to carry 2 recumbent bicycles on the rear of your vehicle. The rack has extra-long arms to hold recumbents with wheelbases up to 74" long and wheel hoop adapters to accommodate the smaller front wheels on recumbents. It features locking frame hooks and adjustable wheel hoops, so you can quickly load and unload your bikes. The included adapter sleeve enables the rack to fit both 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers. An anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the tube.

Locking, Ratcheting Hooks

frame hooks

The Sport Rider uses locking frame hooks to secure your bikes. These ratcheting, cushioned hooks easily adjust along the vertical mast and lock securely in place. The release buttons allow each hook to slide up the ratcheting arm for bike removal. The hooks function independently, which means you can position them to carry bikes of different heights.

Adjustable Wheel Hoops

Sport Rider 2 R Wheel Holders

The wheel hoops accommodate bicycles with wheelbases up to 74" by sliding along the horizontal arms. They secure in place with easy-to-use hand knobs, and the Velcro-like hook-and-loop straps fasten the wheels to the hoops.

The included pair of wheel hoop adapters easily attaches to the wheel hoops to accommodate the front wheels of recumbent bikes or 1 kid's bike with 16" or 18" wheels.

Folding, Tilting Design

tilting

The rack tilts, with or without bikes loaded, for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. To lower the rack, simply remove the pin from the base and tilt the platform down.

folding

The rack also folds up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. To raise the rack, just lower the mast flat against the tray and lift.

Easy Installation with Locking Hitch Pin

The Sport Rider comes with locks for both the rack and your bikes to deter theft. The lock cores in the frame hooks hold the bike down on the rack and prevent them from moving. Also, the lock pod attaches to the hitch pin to secure the rack to your vehicle. These locks are conveniently keyed alike.

hitch adapter

A removable adapter sleeve is included so the rack can be converted for use with 1-1/4" hitch receivers. The sleeve attaches to the shank with a single screw and can be installed or removed quickly.

Complete Security for Bikes and Rack

The Sport Rider comes with locks for both the rack and your bikes to deter theft. The lock cores in the frame hooks hold the bike down on the rack and prevent them from moving. Also, the lock pod attaches to the hitch pin to secure the rack to your vehicle. These locks are conveniently keyed alike.

Add-On Trike Adapter

If you want to transport one recumbent delta trike or one recumbent tadpole-style trike with the Sport Rider, you can use the HRTRK-ADP adapter (sold separately).

Upon initial install everything looks great. Well built and fairly easy to assemble. There was some damage to the shipping box and one of the slides for the wheel bracket was cracked. I have purchased this rack for recumbent bikes. We own 2 bikes a long wheel base rans and a short wheel rans also. Once the initial setting of the wheel holders it should be easy for the future. The old rack I had purchased years back would not fit the long wheel base recumbent. This new rack will do the trick.

I selected the HR1000Z-R based on this review: https://www.etrailer.com/question-432956.html and have used the rack for over a month on an '09 Jetta wagon. It's been a slight disapointment and an overall 'meh' purchase. Sort of a 'guess it does the job' thing. If there was partial stars I'd give it a 2-1/2. Assembly took about 30-45 minutes and the directions are fair but you may have to make a guess or two about some of the minor hardware. The hitch lock and the mast locks are keyed alike so you only need to keep track of one key. We use this rack for both standard diamond frame bikes and for transporting a fully rigged Surly Big Dummy. The latter bike was the primary bike we needed this wider hitch mount system rather than a more prevalent unit. The carrier scrapes when the car and carrier are loaded but that's more due to the Jetta's ride height and height of the receiver. The anti-rattle system is a threaded hitch pin that you run through your receiver then tighten down with a wrench. That keeps it from being a quick mount/dismount but doesn't take more than a few minutes. It comes with a lock for the hitch pin as well. The anti-rattle part keeps the hitch side from rattling, but there's still some lash at the upward bend where the main folding mechanism connects. With lighter bikes, it's not as noticeable but you definitely notice it with the cargo bike and another bike mounted. Both the main rail and mast use pins to secure the parts and allow for changing the form from 'folded away' to 'fully extended for use'. The main folding mechanism has a larger pin with a bale around it to keep it from dislodging during use. There's a smaller pin with a bale that can be removed to drop the assembly to allow access to the rear hatch. There is no assistance for the lift. The likelyhood of a person being able to lift the assembly and remove or add the necessary pin(s) with the rack loaded is pretty slim. Even more so if you have a cargo bike on there. This joint is also where the lash in the system comes from. There's enough room on the receiver side of the joint to allow it to fold easily, but there's not any sort of washer that takes out the slop. I'll probably have to look at a plastic washer or some sort of shim to take the wobble out. The crossbar has four loops to catch the wheels. The loops have velcro straps to secure the wheels to the hoops. The hoops' location is adjustable with a knob that tightens the mounting point on the crossbar. There's a plastic sleeve inside of the connecting piece to let it slide on the crossbar and keep the hoop assembly tight. The knob needs to be cranked down hard for the rear wheel of the Big Dummy. I can see some sag in the BD rear wheel hoop that I assume is from the weight + my failure to tighten it down far enough. Notice from the picture that the BD is biased far to the right. This is to get the top tube hook to land at the joint between the top tube and the seat tube. The mast has a keyed pin that lets you lay over the mast for folding the rack away. One side of the mast has teeth for the top tube clamps. The top tube clamps are open hooks with a foam padding. If your bike has exposed cables on the top tube, the rubbing will eat your paint alive. We got around that by using some pipe insulation to protect the top tube. You'll notice in the stock images the hooks rise to two different levels. One is substantially higher than the other. This means that two standard, regular height bikes won't fit the rack. The only reason this is sort of acceptable is that the BD has a sloping top tube. I reversed the mast from the original position so that the lower hook was on the outside of the rack to allow ease of mounting the BD. Otherwise I'd have to fight the cargo bike into the car side hoops and beat up both the car and the bike in the process. I will likely modify the low hook by drilling out the silver rivets, raising the hook and drilling to remount the hook high enough to get two standard flat top tube diamond frame bikes to mount. I shouldn't have to do that. There's already some light surface corrosion in places like the TT hook. Condensed version (TLDR): The rack can carry a Big Dummy, and it does that okay. The rack can't carry two adult sized standard bikes because one of the top tube hooks is too low to get the bike on. If you have bikes with sloping TTs, you may get lucky and be able to mount both bikes. There's some lash from the folding mechanism. Don't expect to actually get into the rear hatch with bikes mounted on the hitch, the securing mechanism is a purely mechanical joint that's fiddly to operate even with the hitch unloaded. If you have a BD on here, it's going to hang way out to one side if you drive a smallish car. Otherwise the carrier works as advertised. Overall, it's fine I guess. It'll have to be since this seems to be the only ready solution. I'll go through and make some mods to get it to do what it should out of the box. What can be done to fix the problems? Folding mechanism lash: Add plastic washers to still allow the mechanism to fold, but take out the lash. Raising and lowering the assembly while loaded: Add some sort of assistance (spring or gas shock) to raise and lower the assembly. Redesign the locking assembly from pins to an easier system. A friend has a Swagman (I think) carrier and it has a button on top that allows you to release the assembly, not pins that you have to fight to align while lifting up the assembly with the bikes loaded on it. Top tube hooks: increase the mast height to allow the hooks to raise high enough to pick up larger frames. Long winded, but hopefully this helps someone. -David

Easy to put together. Easy to use. I would definitely recommend this rack to a friend. It perfectly fits both mine and my wife’s 29er full suspension mountain bikes. Stoked about this purchase. Solid rack!! Also, I can’t say enough about etrailer.com I called to get some info on another rack that they were out of and was recommended this one, that turns out was a better fit for my bikes than the one I was looking at. Also, I needed it to ship out quickly because I was going on vacation. They expedited the process and it shipped that day. Saved my vacation. I can’t say enough about the company or the rack. SOLID

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

I would have given this bike rack a 5 star except for two issues. 1. the instructions to put it together are hard to understand but keep in mind I do not following them anyway but it was simple to put together 2. When it tips away from the vehicle with the bikes on the inside the pickup the end gate will hit the bike peddles, a fix for that is to extend the main tube from the receiver hitch accordingly. I did not try it on a SUV with the hatch. I think that would work fine. I also like the way it folds up when there is no bikes on it so it is out of the way (see picture) It is a well made bike rack and I would definitely recommend it

Great bike rack, easily assembled, fits our two bike perfectly. Sturdy, easy to load and unload bikes, love the tilt feature. Happy to be able to lock the bikes and the hitch lock. Haven’t used it on a drive yet but I’m sure we will be pleased!

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

The Hollywood HR1000R goes together easily and seems very sturdy. It is easily wide enough to hold two recumbent bikes with seats on and is long enough to accommodate two long wheelbase recumbents. The inside bike installs more easily with the vertical post folded, but once in place is held securely. The outer bicycle installs easily. It does project considerably from the rear of the vehicle and is certainly not light. Pictures show a Rans Stratus LE XL and a Rans V-Rex mounted. Etrailer delivered the order very promptly.

Comments
Works great. I only regret that I waited so long to replace a dangling bike carrier with the Hollywood HR1000R. It is much easier to load bikes on this rack and they are held more securely. Now that I have experienced the rack, I’d recommend it more strongly than I did at first.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

My review is for the model that carries recumbent bikes. We love this model because it folds/tilts up close to the car when not in use. We spent a lot of time searching the Internet to find a relatively inexpensive model that had the tilt capability. If you couldn’t tilt it up, you wouldn’t be able to close the garage door or you would have to remove the carrier when not in use. When closed, the carrier does not interfere with the operation of the hatchback (on a Dodge Caliber). We use it to carry a Day 6 bike and a recumbent bike. The slots for the wheels are adjustable for the different lengths. It is absolutely perfect for our purpose and looks stylish on the back of the car. I will try to upload a few pictures (which were taken when I had two Day 6 bikes loaded on it). It was on back order at eTrailer, but we were happy to wait a few weeks for it. We were kept informed on the status of our order by regular e-mails. Once they received it in stock, the turnaround time to get it to us was very quick, only 2 or 3 days as I recall.

Installed the HR1000 and the Drawtite hitch. Was very easy. The photos and videos on etrailer website were great, being able to refer to them for any questions during the assembly. The rack works great and we are able to open the hatchback on the rear of the prius without even having to tilt the rack and bikes back. VERY pleased.

Assembly and attachment to my car was very straight forward and easy. It seems to be a sturdy unit. It’s s going to be nice to have a bike rack that is made to accommodate a recumbent. In the past have always made due with a more universal type racks which to be honest were a little sketchy? I am trying it out this weekend a 400 mile round trip should be a good test.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

This bike rack works fine. It solidly supports two bikes with no abrasions or other damage to the bikes. It is very stable on the back of the car and does not sway in corners or over bumbs in the road. It is relatively easy to mount on the car. Bikes go on easy although I do have to lift the forward bike fairly high to clear verticle bar. Occasionally I struggle a little bit releasing and sliding one of the lock downs that go over the frame of the bike. Overall, I have been very happy with it and it is a big improvement over my last bike rack where the bike frame was the only supported area.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

Pros: Great rack for our two bikes! Fits nicely into the class 1 trailer hitch on my wife's Nissan Altima. Easy to use and holds bikes securely even on highway and gravel country roads. Locking bike arms and locking hitch bolt are a nice feature to deter theft. Would buy again! Cons: Locking bike arms work well overall but require just the right touch to make them go up when you want to take your bike off. Hitch bolt is longer than it needs to be, but not too difficult to use.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

Good bicycle hitch. The only problem I had was with the arm that comes down on the bike. The padding is not that great so I would recommend adding extra padding or you may find the bike a bit scraped up. Also, I went with the smaller hitch so I could use this on my car and truck (with the adapter). I feel the smaller hitch is not that stable and should have gone with the 2" and only use on my truck. However I spoke to Hollywood Racks support and they provided me some good tips on strapping down the bike mount to minimize the wiggling. Overall, I like it and for my recumbents... it works good.

Comments
According to Hollywood Racks, the bike retaining hooks should only be pushed down until they stop. Its not necessary to push them down so far that the foam compresses.

My wife and I are in our 70's and we have e-bikes, so we need to be able to load them easily. This is the perfect solution for us. We don't have to lift the bikes very high, and the way they ride is perfect for preventing damage to the bikes. Kimberly at etrailer.com was very helpful and answered all of our questions. It was also delivered very quickly.

I purchased this hitch to carry my trike and it works great! I'm older and it's pretty easy to get my bike on it..just have to pick up the back end and walk it around and place on the tracks. With this though I am able to take my trike anywhere..great investment! I would definitely recommend this product.

The only problem I have with this trike rack is the mounting height. As I am elderly almost 81 , the height I have to lift the trike is problematic. I have talked to Hollywood and we are investigating making a mounting bar without the offset. This would lower the height to a more mangeable point and make it easer to load

Comments
Working out just fine. The straight bar lowers the rack to a more manageable height.

The product is very well designed. Quality seams to be of very good material and should give good service. I really like the ease of loading and unloading the bikes. The extra clamp hook that was supplied, was needed in my case. Folding the carrier back allows us to open our rear hatch on the car. This was just what I wanted for carrying my recumbent and wife's regular bikes.

  • How to Determine Wheelbase of Bike and Bike Rack Option for Long Wheelbase
Measuring the wheelbase of your bike to determine the correct bike rack for you is pretty simple; all you have to do is measure from the center of one wheel to the center of the other wheel and this is the measurement of your wheelbase. For a 53" wheelbase you will need a bike rack that is designed for recumbent bikes and I recommend the Saris Freedom 2-Bike Platform Rack for Recumbents # SA4412B-R because because it weighs less than 25 lbs it is extremely lightweight but still has...

This adapter grabs the bike by the seat post and the steering stem which will prevent your bike's frame from being contacted.

  • Hitch Bike Rack Recommendation for Giant Revive Semi Recumbent
We have one hitch bike rack that can fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch and a 2 inch hitch and carry one other standard bike with it but nothing for more bikes than that. For that you'd want the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider for Recumbents part # HR1000Z-R which is a great option. It's longer for the longer recumbent wheel base and has an adapter for the smaller wheel size as well. This rack uses an arm that comes down and grabs the unusual frame shape your bike has.

  • Will Kuat Sherpa fit 2019 Subaru Forester Factory Hitch and Not Melt Tires from Exhaust
The Kuat Sherpa part # SH12G will fit the factory hitch of your 2019 Subaru Forester and will hold the bikes high enough that it would not cause any damage to the bike from exhaust as this rack has quite a bit of rise built into the shank of it. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Best Bike Rack to Carry a Salsa Warbird and EZ-SPORT AX Bike
I did a bit of research on your Salsa Warbird/EZ-SPORT AX bikes and believe to have found the perfect carrier for you. I recommend using the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2-Bike Carrier part # HR1000Z-R. This rack works on both 1-1/4" and 2" trailer hitch receivers. The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider will easily allow you to carry both your Salsa Warbird and EZ-SPORT AX at the same time. The reason it is able to carry two bikes with completely different wheelbases has to do with its adjustable...

  • Recommendation for a Bike Rack That Will Work With an ElliptiGo 8C Bike
I found a rack that will work on your ElliptiGo 8C bike and your 2015 Ford F-150 truck. I like the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 Bike Rack, # HR1000Z-R. The bike rack is a hitch mounted rack that will fit either 1-1/4 and 2 inch receiver hitch openings. The rack will allow you to mount your ElliptiGo bike and one standard bike to your vehicle. With this rack you will have to remove the front wheel and use the Hollywood Racks Fork Mount Adapter, # HR915. The adapter will create a...

  • Recumbent Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Kia Sorento
We have great recumbent bike rack options like the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider for Recumbents part # HR1000Z-R which once you install a hitch on your 2018 Kia Sorento you'd be totally set. The recumbent bike racks have the ability to handle the extra weight and longer wheelbase of the recumbents as well as the smaller wheel diameters. Then for a trailer hitch the Draw Tite part # 75908 would be an excellent option that installs relatively easy and has plenty of weight capacity. I attached...

  • Will Dual Exhaust Damage Bikes and Bike Rack
The photo you sent did not come through but if your 2014 Ram 1500 has a dual exhaust which points directly behind your truck then the heat could very easily damage your bikes and any platform rack such as the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2-Bike Carrier for Recumbents # HR1000Z-R. Instead, I recommend checking out the Thule Insta-Gater Truck Bed Single Bike Rack # TH501. This rack fits all styles of bikes so long as they have a 20" to 29" wheel size, tires no wider than 3" and weigh no...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for Greenspeed Recumbent Trike
I looked up pictures of your Greenspeed recumbent trike and the best rack we have for it is the Hollywood Racks part # HR1000Z-R-TRKADP. This comes with an adapter for the wide trike wheelbase you would have and would work well. It also works with Class II 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches so you will need to verify you have a Class II hitch. I attached a review video for this bike rack for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Bike Rack to Carry a Day 6 Bike on a 2012 Nissan Cube
Trunk mounted bike racks for your vehicle are not strong enough to carry your Day 6 bikes on the back of your 2012 Nissan Cube, so you will need to use a hitch mounted bike rack for your needs. Nissan does not recommend towing nor installing a hitch on your vehicle, but we do offer trailer hitches to fit your vehicle if you want to use a hitch mounted rack. Many Nissan Cube owners want a trailer hitch to be able to carry bike racks and cargo carriers which is why we offer trailer hitches...

  • Can I Carry 1 Recumbent and 1 Regular Bike With The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Part # HR1000Z-R
Yes, the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 2-Bike Carrier for Recumbents part # HR1000Z-R has an adjustable wheel mount feature that will allow you to carry 1 recumbent and 1 regular bike at the same time. Ideally, you will want to put the recumbent bike on first as this will generally be heavier than a regular bike. As long as either bike does not weight in excess of 45 lbs. and the recumbent bike has a wheelbase shorter than 74" with tire width less than 3", this bike rack will work for you....

  • Comparing Hollywood Racks HR100R & Swagman XC S64650EX Hitch Bike Racks
The main practical differences between the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 # HR1000Z-R and the Swagman XC-Extended Platform Rack # S64650-EXT are the maximum bike wheelbase that will fit (74-inches for the Sport Rider versus 66-inches) and the bike weight capacity (45-lbs for the Sport Rider 2 versus only 35-lbs for the Swagman). Another feature that favors the Sport Rider 2 is the 5-inches of rise on the rack's shank; this means better ground clearance with less chance of the rack scraping...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 Ford Focus to Carry Recumbent Trike
I have a solution for you, check out the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 2-Bike Carrier for Recumbents # HR1000Z-R. This rack is designed for carrying recumbents. Since yours is a trike you will also need the adapter # HRTRK-ADP. The Yakima # Y02458 that you referenced will not fit on Class I hitches like what you have on your Focus so I would not recommend it for you. The # HR1000Z-R is Class I hitch compatible.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier For Recumbent Bike On 2006 Lexus IS 250
We do offer one trailer hitch that is designed to fit your Lexus. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C11372. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. All non-trailer loads like bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. The bike carrier I recommend for your Sun recumbent bike is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider, part...

Yes, I certainly can recommend a hitch mount bike rack that will work with both your 2017 Ford Explorer and Elliptigo 8c stand-up bike. Eilliptigo actually recommends some specific bike racks for their bikes. For a hitch mount they recommend the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider for recumbents # HR1000Z-R. • Recommendation for Transporting 2 Tadpole Trikes
Good news, I have a solution for transporting your 2 Tadpole Trikes. To be able to transport 2 Trikes you will need to use both your roof rack and hitch on your vehicle. This may prove tricky depending on the vehicle you decide to go with. If you choose the Enclave you will need to upgrade your roof rack cross bars because of the shape of the mounting bracket. If you would rather use the Cadillac, if it already has square bars, you would need to install a hitch like # 75174 on the...
