sport rider

The Sport Rider Special Edition platform-style hitch bike rack makes it simple to carry 4 bikes on the rear of your vehicle. This versatile rack is easy to use, and it features locking frame hooks and adjustable wheel hoops so you can quickly load and unload your bikes. An anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the tube.

1400 SE 2-Piece

The Sport Rider SE consists of a two-bike base unit and a removable two-bike extension unit, allowing you to use the carrier as either a two- or four-bike rack. The 2 pieces make the rack easy to install because you can slide the base into your hitch and secure it before adding the extension.

Locking, Ratcheting Hooks

ratcheting hooks

The Sport Rider SE uses locking frame hooks to secure your bikes. The ratcheting, cushioned hooks easily adjust along the vertical mast and lock securely in place. The release buttons allow each hook to slide up the ratcheting arm for bike removal. The hooks function independently, which means you can position them to carry bikes of different heights.

Adjustable Wheel Hoops

wheel hoops

The wheel hoops accommodate bicycles with wheelbases up to 60" by sliding along the horizontal arms. They are secured in place with easy-to-use hand knobs, and the Velcro-like hook-and-loop straps fasten the wheels to the hoops.

Fat Bike Wheel Cradles

If you want to carry a fat bike on the Sport Rider SE, you can replace the rack's wheel hoops with fat bike hoops (sold separately).

Folding, Tilting Design

tilting

The rack tilts, with or without bikes loaded, for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Simply remove the pivot pin, pull the bottom quick-release spring pin, and lower the rack.

folding

The rack also folds up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. To raise the rack, just pull the upper quick-release spring pin and lift.

Tool-Free Installation with Anti-Rattle System

The rack installs in your hitch without the need for tools. Simply slide the shank into your receiver until the welded stop plate contacts the hitch. The stop plate saves you from getting on your hands and knees to align the pin holes while inserting the hitch pin. Once the pin is in place, attach the lock pod. Lastly, use the integrated anti-wobble handle on the front of the shank to tighten the rack inside your hitch receiver and prevent it from rattling.

Complete Security for Bikes and Rack

The lock cores in the frame hooks hold the bike down on the rack and prevent them from moving. Also, the lock pod attaches to the hitch pin to secure the rack to your vehicle. These locks are conveniently keyed alike. For extra protection, the 8' long security cable wraps through the bike frames, connects to the hitch pin, and is secured to the pin by the hitch lock. The extension cable can be added to the 8' cable to help secure 4 bikes to the rack.

Add-On Adapters

Sport Rider SE Cargo Carrier

If you want to carry both 2 bikes and extra gear, an add-on cargo basket (sold separately) is available.

 Hollywood Racks Wheel Hoop Adapters

If you want to use the rack to transport a kid's bike with 16" or 18" wheels, wheel hoop adapters (sold separately) are available.

If you want to transport one recumbent delta trike or one recumbent tadpole-style trike with the Sport Rider SE, you can use the HRTRK-ADP adapter (sold separately). Or if you want to transport one standard bike and either one recumbent delta trike, one recumbent tadpole-style trike, or one adult trike, then you can use the HRTRK-ADP-2 adapter (sold separately).

Note: The trike adapters can only be used with the Sport Rider SE's two-bike base unit.

I've been using a Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike for many years however I needed to find a bike rack that would transport my wife's new Trek Verve +2 Lowstep E-Bike. Since it is a Step-through and weighs 52 lbs. with the battery, I was uncomfortable hanging the bike off the RidgeBack. I typically only transport 2 bikes however occasionally need to pack up 3 or 4 bikes. After much research, I decided on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE4. I loved the fact that I could take off the extension and make it a two back rack and appreciated the price. I was however concerned the E-Bike might be too heavy as the specifications note a 50 lb. per bike limit so I reached out directly to Hollywood Bikes. I asked if they thought it'd be alright to place the E-Bike closest to the vehicle with the battery removed. I heard back from them within 24 hours and they agreed, with the battery removed it would be fine. I ordered the SE4 on Monday morning and it arrived Thursday. It was well packaged and easy to assemble using the instructions. I had absolutely no issues and it went together perfectly. The rack is of very good quality and sturdy even when loaded up. I really like that the bikes can be locked down and everything, including the supplied cable is keyed alike. I was able set it up for only 3 bikes as that is all we're taking to Florida next week. I'll follow up after our trip.

A year later and my Sport Rider SE4 is still working great! Use mainly for two bikes but have hauled four several times.

So far I am very impressed with the quality of this rack. The box arrived undamaged and the rack was in perfect condition. The finish is very nice and robust powder coat. Assembly was a breeze with the included instructions. As other have mentioned it is very strong and a bit heavy.. I am 6'2 200lbs and have no trouble handling it at all by myself as long as I do it in 2 pieces. The rack is very easy to separate into 2 pieces. I haven't used it yet buy I have no doubt it will work splendidly. I hung it using a hitch mount bracket that I ordered from Amazon. I was able to hang it underneath some 12 inch shelves and all I had to do was reverse the 2 bike rear section to allow the rack to clear the shelves. Fits like a glove.

This is the 2nd bike rack we have purchased from etrailer. The first did not work out for us, so we donated it to our son and his family. It is working for him. We love this new rack. The bikes are so secure and don't rattle or move at all. They don't bang against each other either. Once we got the frame adjusted for our specific bikes, loading and unloading are quick and easy. Love that the bar lays down so there is no lifting high and trying to maneuver the bike around it. Love that we can still get in our rear door with rack on. Would highly recommend.

Ordered this to replace my Kuat Transit 3 since I now have 4 bikes. I could not have been more pleased. I shopped around for different brands and features and the Hollywood Sport Rider 4 checked all the boxes. The ability to convert from a 2 bike to a 4 bike rack, lockable, solid mounting system, and of course priced affordably, made this a perfect choice. Install was easy and smooth. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a convertible bike rack.

Comments
After a year of use, I can honestly say that this was the best choice I could have made. Ive used it to carry all 4 of our bikes, converted it to carry 2 with ease, basically what I needed and looked for when I was deciding what bike rack to get. The tension system works great and the track does not dance around like most racks, even when hauling all 4 bikes. I also like the staggered system when all 4 racks are used 2 on one level, rear 2 raised slightly above. This helps with some ground clearance if the need should arise. All in all, Completely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend to anyone who asks.

We purchased two e-bikes last summer, each weighing in at just under 50 lbs. Have a 20 year old single arm hanging bike rack to haul these two new bikes plus two standard adult bikes for our adult children or travel friend's bike. Realized quickly that a rack rated for 35 lb bikes was not going to provide the safe transport of all bikes as we travel across country. Researched several platform style bike racks at etrailer.com and like the Hollywood SE2 4-bike platform rack the best. We like the robust design, easy of loading and unloading the bikes, the flexibility to carry two or four bikes with the second 2-bike attachment and the fact we can use it on our Motorhome or our van when we are not traveling by RV. Ordered and received in less then a week. Assembly was easy and straight forward with the assemble instructions, took just over and hour. I really love the anti-rattle features and the security cable that came with the rack. Pictures to come later and an update once we use it with our motorhome.

Comments
After a year I am still very happy with our purchase. The rack is robust enough for our two ebike and our kids bike. Being able to take two or four biles makes it a great option for the RV or our SU V.

Excellent rack. Easy to assemble and it is solid like a tank. Carrying four bikes will he easy. It comes with all hardware and locks which is a plus. Best rack I have seen and tilt up and down features are easy to use. Installation on a hitch is straightforward and easy.

Comments
Excellent bike rack. After a year of use and love 1000s of miles of road trips with 4 adult sized bikes, I can safely say this is the most convenient, sturdy, and functional rack I have ever owned.

Such a fabulous bike rack!! The rack is simple to mount onto the van’s hitch. It’s easy to add or take off the outer rack either before or after putting it on the hitch. The two part design is a great feature for taking a bike to the shop for repair, for when it’s just the two of us, or we can quickly add the second half for two more bikes. It folds up against the back of the van easily and securely. When needed it holds four adult bikes without any problems. Bikes are SO enjoyable to load onto this rack - way better than racks that support the bike by the frame. I have a Y frame bike so it was always challenging to load it onto a traditional rack. The tire supports move to accommodate any size bike. Bikes that have the lower frame get mounted closer to the vehicle for each section of the rack. The rack is stable when driving, even when fully loaded. The locking feature is nice, especially for when we’re away from home and the bikes stay on the rack overnight. Be careful when lifting as the rack itself is heavy.

For the price I give it 5 stars although 4.5 is more realistic. So far, I have only used the two bike carrier and have travelled well over 500 miles. I have yet to attach the extended carrier and used it with all four bikes but I doubt that would change any of my opinions. I like that all of the locks are on the same key (hitch bolt, slide down locks and cable lock. I love that the cable lock was included. The hooks are well padded although I can see a bit of black rubbing off on my cross bar. This doesn't bother me. The Velcro straps work well, I just wonder how time and wear will treat them. The carrier is solid and doesn't have any movement up and down, but it does have a little sideways movement. This isn't a big deal to me. Getting the bike closest to the vehicle on the rack is challenging, but doable once you learn how. The ability to tilt the rack away from the vehicle is great and well as the ability to fold it up. It is solidly built and has significant weight to it. The adjustability of the wheel wells is very nice. You should be able to place any style and size bikes on it with no issues (except for fat tire). I've seen some of their older models and this one is much better.

Comments
Over a year later and its still great. I use the two bike carrier about 75 of the time and attach the extended carrier the other 25. I used the extended carrier to haul three bikes yesterday. Getting the third bike to slide in between the second bike and the second bar is a bit of a challenge, but it works. It have used it on a truck, vehicle with a rear mounted spare tire have to use a hitch extender and typical SUV with a lift gate. The hatch can easily open with the rack full of bikes and in the lowered position. Solid rack for a great price. I did have to tighten the hand knobs that hold the wheel carriers in place one time as they had worked their way loose.

I was looking for a 4 bike hitch mounted rack of this style. My main goal was to have it fit my 05 Jeep Wrangler with 31 x 10.5 tires. I wanted to make sure the rack would rest in the folded up positon when not in use. I also wanted the flexibility to have only a 2 bike mount for when I ride solo. I emailed etrailer and they were quick with a response and included a video as well. I placed the order a week ago Saturday, and my rack was delivered ahead of schedule. I was blown away by the service I received from etrailer, and am very pleased with the rack. I found it easy to install and it totally does what I need it to do. Thank you etrailer. Keep up the great job.

Comments
I love it. It is a breeze to put it on and take it off. When it is on, I feel secure knowing that everything is locked to my vehicle. The rack itself when not in use tilts up and fits perfectly against the spare tire on my Jeep.

Love our new Hollywood rack! It was easy to assemble. It looks really solid and secure while driving. Bikes are quickly and easily loaded. Can’t wait to try it out with the cargo tray. One minor suggestion, please make the Velcro tire straps a little longer. They barely fit around the bike with the 3” tires.

I've only just received my HR1400 Hollywood rack, assembled it, installed in on my car, and loaded it with 4 of our bikes, but I'm very impressed so far. It's exactly what I was hoping for. It is heavy, but it's extremely sturdy. I found it very easy to mount on my car and remove when I do so taking advantage of the fact it breaks into 2 pieces (which it does very easily). I'm looking forward to using it on our next outing. By the way, etrailer.com rocks! You had the best price on this rack and it was sitting on my doorstep 2 days after ordering (ordered Wed afternoon and delivered Friday). In addition, I had no issues with the packaging or the contents being damaged as a few others have mentioned in reviews.

Comments
Ive owned this rack for a year now and I still love it. I would definitely buy it again if I ever had the need. Clearances are fine on my vehicle. I have no issue with the Velcro-like straps. The only issue I have is that I cant open the back of my car when bikes are loaded. But honestly, I dont find that to be a huge deal.

Great bike rack for a family of four. Over the past year, we have used it five times for various outings. All bikes stay nice and snug during travel. Quick and easy to load and remove. Only downside is this rack is heavy when removing from vehicle after trips. I would highly recommend for the price and quality.

Just received my Hollywood Rack last week and put it together and used it this weekend. The rack seems solid, easy to load bikes and the rack seems to secure the bikes well to the rack. I have not driven far with 4 bikes yet but with 2 bikes I've had no issues at all. Looking forward to years of service with the rack. The rack arrived on time and in good shape from etrailer.com, no problems at all.

This rack has all the bells and whistles of a much more expensive rack at a significantly better price. My 14 year old son put it together easily from the pictures (I had a harder time following the instructions) but between the two of us it didn’t take more than 30 minutes. It is super solid, holds the bikes very securely, and I love the built in locks for each bike, which you pay a lot more for with other brands. It’s just really solid and well designed. The photo shows the 2 rack configuration on my 2018 Honda Pilot. The rear door is able to open without having to put the rack down. My son and I are exploring the great mountain biking around Fort Collins and it’s great to have the bikes on in a minute and go. Thanks Noah for making this suggestion!

The rack is very sturdy and holds the bikes securely. It is very heavy! The push buttons to move the secure bars get stuck and are difficult to use. Overall, worth the purchase but could use some modifications.

Comments
hank you for your review. You can lubricate the buttons with products like WD40 to help with the sticking. Please remember to remove the rack when not in use. In the end, this rack does have a limited lifetime warranty but it does not cover normal wear and tear.

Just received my rack and assembled it. I had a small issue with the bolt of the second rack but got it through eventually with a little hammering. Loaded all four bikes on the rack today and took it for a test drive. Very strong and steady. It looks really nice and so far I like it.

Excellent 4 bike platform rack in a 2+2 configuration Very sturdy rack. Assembly instructions could have been better though installation was straightforward. Encountered a small issue with the placement of 4 bikes (17" MTB, 15" WMN MTB, 13" MTB and 24" dialed kids) because of the geometry of the bike's top tubes but after figuring out optimal placement and sizing the width of the wheel holders correctly, bikes were generally easy to get in and out. Installed on back of '17 Highlander XLE attached to an etrailer Hitch Receiver (Item # e98844). Folds up nicely when not in use. Not getting access to truck might be an issue for some buyers but not a concern for me. Comes down to the price/feature/quality conundrum and there really isn't too many in this price range that offers a 2+2 configuration and highly rated by buyers. Great delivery service from etrailer.

Great communication from seller. Fast shipping, particularly since it's free. Item arrived and was in good shape. Heavy and awkward to carry so be careful how far you have to lift it. Don't ask your wife to pick it up. Not very difficult to put together, although slowed down by cumbersome instructions with poor pictures and it took time to identify each part as the correct one. Good quality unit, although some packing styrofoam was glued to bars leaving several stretches of white, sticky goo on the upwards facing bars where the tire holders slide. Makes adjusting the tire holders more difficult. Overall a good product and handles the 4 bikes well. Will see over time how it holds up to consistent use.

I was a Thule rack owner at one time, but needed to upgrade to a tray rack that could hold 4 bikes. I was skeptical about anything other than a Thule. Even though the Thule was much pricier, I wanted to stick with what I was comfortable with. I was convinced after discussing different options with a customer rep that this rack would be just as good and perform to my expectations... This rack has exceeded my expectations (more to follow). My Thule rack was very mobile while driving even when I would tighten the receiver pin to the rack. It would sway every time I would hit a bump, turn a corner or accelerate/brake hard. The other downfall was my former Thule would not tilt down to allow access to my cargo area of either one of our SUVs. It was also a bit heavier as well. However...this Hollywood rack has been performing better than I expected. I would definitely advise anyone who is looking for a quality bike rack that can convert from 2 to 4 bikes to seriously consider this rack. Here are the following reasons: 1: This rack barely moves when you tighten it to the receiver. It is solid. It only moves slightly, and even then I have to really watch the rack in order to catch it moving. 2: The receiver pin, vertical clamps, and bike cable are all keyed alike (4 keys) 3: Rack is heavy duty but light enough for a small female to handle and install on a vehicle. 4: Assembly is easy enough for a grade school child to perform. Took me all of 30 minutes including finding parts my daughter was "stealing". 5: The product was shipped in the product box which was inside of another heavy duty cardboard box. 6: The tilting rack clears enough room for my cargo door on my VW Touareg. 7: The bikes are held on very securely and do NOT move once locked into position. etrailer has excellent customer service.

Lets be honest, there are better looking racks. But I work at etrailer.com and can use pretty much any bike rack in the world. When it came time to go on an adventure race I chose this rack to get my teams bikes there. When we got home one of my team mates bought one because he was so impressed. When it came time to go on a 12 hour road trip with my family I chose the Hollywood. It is a star. Not a Marilyn Monroe, more of a Sylvester Stallone. The thing is solid and it works really well. It is heavy, but any 4 bike rack is going to be on the heavy side. The option to remove the 2 bike extension is nice because it makes the rack easier to handle when you only need 2 bikes. The antirattle knob snugs the rack up in the hitch super tight. Having the cable lock and hitch lock included and keyed the same makes it easy to lock the bikes up when you stop for dinner. The folding feature uses pins and clips instead of the switches found on some other racks. The pins and holes were a bit tough to get aligned at first. I had to ask my wife to lift up on the end of the rack just a hair to get the pin started. She got chain grease on her and I quickly learned that asking for her help was not a good solution to my pin alignment problem. So I grabbed my drill and a bit that was sized the same as the pin hole and cleaned out the holes. About one minute later the pin was sliding in and out perfectly and my wife will never get greasy again. In a nutshell this rack is not the lightest, not the easiest and not the prettiest, but I love it. It is easy enough to use that it is not a hassle, it locks to keep the bikes safe, is a great price for the features and it is solid, very solid. You can see in the pictures that I have used this rack extensively and it still is working great.

Hi, my question is whether you have any frame damage on your biks after your long trips. Vs. going with the t2 or hold up style.
-- comment by: nate - 05/07/2015

Comments
Nate, I have used the rack on a few long trips, to Colorado, Wisconsin and to our adventure race. So far there has not been any frame damage. The hook that comes down on the frame has a pretty thick pad. One of the wheel clamp racks would prevent the possibility of frame damage, but I think it will be a long time before the pad on the Hollywood wears out and it is an issue.

I researched bike racks that can carry four bikes for a long time before settling on this rack. I was very nervous about this one given the price is about $400-$500 less than other comparable racks. However, I am very pleased with this after our first weekend using it to haul all four of our family's bikes. Assembly was relatively straightforward. Upon opening, I was very pleased with how "solid" all the parts are. I would have preferred some exploded drawings or some with a wider perspective of the rack as sometimes it took a few minutes staring at the drawings to understand the next step. I was able to put the entire rack together in about an hour or so. I used my own ratchet set and wrenches rather than the wrench included. You'll have a much easier time if you use quality tools rather that the basic wrench included. We went ahead and put all the bikes on the rack prior to our first trip so that we could take the time to adjust where all the tire supports should go. This process took a bit of time (probably 30 minutes or so for four bikes). Our first trip with the bikes was great. Since we took the time to adjust all the tire supports after initial assembly, it took no time at all to get all the bikes on the rack. We drove about 30 miles for our first outing with the rack. The bikes rode very well with little movement on city streets and on the highway. We had no issues with the bikes rubbing each other or getting scratched due to movement as we have had with other racks that "hang" the bikes rather than set them in a tire support. We were hauling one men's bike, two women's bikes adult bikes and one kid bike with 20" wheels in the photos I have included in the review. We have a 2018 GMC Yukon XL. We were able to completely open the window on the back hatch without tilting the rack downward. We did have to adjust the handlebars on the bike closest to the car to get full clearance. With the rack tilted down, we are able to get the back hatch open almost 75% of the way open. The only issue with tilting the rack fully loaded is it is very heavy, so you'll need two people (one to pull the pin and one to lift the rack). Removal of the rack was easy. It's heavy, but I was able to lift it without separating the rack into two pieces without any problem. You could separate the two and lift each separately to lighten the load. I am very pleased with this purchase and cannot believe the quality for the price!

Performed as advertised. Would consider 4x bike racks that were designed with a lighter overall weight -given the install/removal requirements.

I bought this a year ago and all I can say is that I’m very pleased. I had a 3 bike hanging Hollywood rack before this and was happy with that one as well. The rack is built like a tank and is really durable. If there is a downside it’s that it’s really heavy, but that’s not really a problem for me. Highly recommend

- HR1400Z

Very solid and well made bike rack and you get a lot for the price. Definitely a two person job to mount it on your vehicle if all 4 mounts are attached due to the all steel construction but that makes this very strong with no sway while mounted. You get a lot of features from this manufacturer at this price point.

With that being said it may not be the best choice because when we tested it there wasn't room to open rear hatch because of the bike's handle bars. Even with the rack tilted. If you're not worried about this then the Sport Rider SE is a great choice for you. If that is important to you then I recommend the Saris Freedom, part # SA4414B. I've linked a video...

  • Best Value Expandable 2/4-Bike Platform Hitch Bike Rack
Swagman makes great bike racks but Hollywood Racks bike racks are built like tanks. They have the build quality and tight clearances that the super expensive bike racks have and cost less so anytime someone is looking for the best value from a bike rack I always recommend Hollywood Racks bike racks. So your best option is the Hollywood Racks 4 bike rack part # HR1400Z which can be used as either a 4 bike or 2 bike rack. I attached a review video for this rack for you to check out as well.

Thank you for all of the great info! The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z is a great bike rack itself, but from all of the info you gave me I don't think it's the best option for you as it weighs in at 81 lbs in the 4-bike configuration; definitely not a very light model. Instead I recommend checking out the Hollywood Racks Destination # HR4000 which weighs in at 42 lbs which is very light for a 4-bike platform rack. This is perfect for standard bikes as it has a weight capacity...

That said, you can only use this specific cargo carrier due to the design of the bike rack.

  • Can Hollywood Racks Bike Rack HR1400Z Fit in Curt Hitch for 2019 Audi Q5
The Curt hitch part # C13331 is going to work great with the Hollywood Rack bike rack # HR1400Z that you have currently. This hitch has plenty of clearance to fit the rack and since it doesn't have a back on it there wouldn't be any reason any portion of the rack wouldn't fit properly.

  • Best Bike Rack for Carbon Frame Electric Bike
You are correct. It is not recommended to use a frame mounted bike rack with a carbon frame bike. The Hollywood Racks Bike Frame Adapter Bar # HRBA-PRO is typically used to act as a top tube for a frame mounted bike rack when your bike has a top tube that angles downward. This could help you reduce the stress on your frame when transporting your bike on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z but I don't think it is the best way to carry your carbon frame e bike. This is a great option which comes with locks for security and can adapt to fit pretty much any type of bike like fat tires bikes with the above adapter.

  • Can Bike Rack Be Carried in Front Mounted Receiver of Motorhome on Ford E-450 Cutaway Chassis
As long as the front mounted receiver you're using has sufficient capacity to handle the combined weight of the rack (around 80 lbs as a 4 bike or 50 lbs as a 2 bike) and the bikes, it should work fine for you. Keep in mind however that carrying bikes on the front of the vehicle could block the headlights. The rack will extend roughly 46 inches from the face of the hitch, so it will be sticking out quite a bit. You don't mention what model year your E450 cutaway chassis is, but we offer...

If you measure from the opening of the hitch on your 2014 Jeep Wrangler out to the furthest point out on the spare tire of your 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and the distance is less than 6 inches this rack would have enough clearance to fold up.

Yes, your Jamis Explorer Femme will fit and be secure on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider # HR1400Z. The frame at the crank at 19 inches is not too low for the hooks. If you look at the rack closely you will see that one hook is taller than the other. What I would do is make sure that the shorter hook is put on the upright first followed by the longer one. This will ensure that the hook can go as low as it can to properly secure the step-through frame bike.

I measured the Hollywood Racks bike rack # HR1400Z for you. The part that would most likely make contact with a tailgate is the bracket that holds the arm closest to the back of the truck. From the top of the receiver opening to the top of that bracket measures 10-7/8 inches (see picture). On your 2002 Ford F-250 lower the tailgate and measure from the top of the receiver opening on your hitch to the lowered tailgate. If less than 10-7/8 inches there won't be any interference.

Generally, any rack that can fold or tilt, with few exceptions, won't be rated for this applications.
