Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack In Use

The Yakima HoldUp is a premium, tray-style bike rack that lets you carry 2 bikes using your vehicle's hitch. This rack is specifically designed to carry bikes with big tires and wide handlebars, but it will carry just about any bike, including those with wheels from 20" to 29", carbon frames, disc brakes, thru axles, or full suspensions.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Large Front Wheel Holders

The HoldUp is easy to load, even if your bikes have monster wheels. The deep, contoured front wheel cradles accommodate just about any wheel out there, and the pivoting arms with StrongArm technology ensure that your bikes are held firmly in place.

Note: Not recommended for use on bikes with front fenders.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Ratcheting Arm

To load a bike, simply place your front wheel in the holder, rotate the pivoting arm up and over the wheel, and press down firmly on the ratcheting hook. To release the hook, simply press the built-in red button and slide the hook up and off your wheel.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Adjustable Rear Wheel Cradles

Large rear wheel holders allow the HoldUp to accommodate a wide variety of bike wheelbases. These wheel holders pivot front to back, adjusting automatically to your wheel size - no need for sliding and tightening. Secure the wheels in place with the ratcheting straps built into each holder.

Yakima HoldUp Ratcheting Arm No Frame Contact

Mounting bikes by the wheels helps prevent any scratches or scuffs to the paint. The ratcheting hooks are padded, however, so they won't mark your wheels. And the pivot mechanisms in the arms are overbuilt to ensure they keep functioning smoothly over a lifetime of hard use.

Fully Adjustability Bike Trays

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Adjustable Bike Trays

The wheel trays on the HoldUp are fully adjustable to ensure that you have all the space you need when mounting bikes with mammoth handlebars, such as a 29er. To adjust a wheel tray, loosen the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the rack base and slide the tray left or right to achieve the desired spacing. Retighten the bolts and you're ready to roll with optimum handlebar clearance and no fear of bike-to-bike contact during transport.

Complete Security

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Built-in Cable Locks

The HoldUp has a cable lock built into the end of each pivoting arm. These cables loop through your bike frames and attach to posts on the bike rack arms to secure your bikes in place. The cables store in the arms when not in use.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Locking Hitch Pin

The rack also has a HitchLock hitch pin that allows you to lock the rack to your vehicle. The threaded pin also works as an anti-rattle device to reduce noise and movement of the rack when it's mounted in your trailer hitch receiver.

The cable locks and HitchLock hitch pin include keyed-alike Same Key System (SKS) lock cores. These cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Tilting Design and Compact Storage

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Folded for Storage

The HoldUp stores more compactly than similar platform-style racks, and features a spring-loaded pin at the base that lets you fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle when it's not in use. First rotate the front wheel holders inward and tilt the rear wheel holders inward, then rotate the pivot arms down and use the ratcheting hooks to secure the arms to the rear wheel holders. Once the arms are in place, pull the pin and fold the rack up against your vehicle.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Tilted for Rear Cargo Access

The same pin tilts the rack down, while fully loaded, so you can gain access to your vehicle's rear cargo area without having to unload your bikes.

Optional 2-Bike Add-On

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack 2 Bike Add-on

There is a 2-bike add-on available (Y02446 - sold separately) for the HoldUp that will allow you convert it from a 2-bike carrier to a 4-bike carrier. To install the add-on on your HoldUp, simply remove the endcap from the bike rack base, slide the add-on's shank into the hole on the bike rack, and secure the shank with a bolt that comes with the add-on.

It's quite expensive bike rack which made in China with problematic quality control. I have to disassemble one of the bike bases in order to remove the metal shavings inside of the end of the arm which were interfering with cable lock preventing it get fully retracted into the tube. Inside tube, there are no coating and metal started to rust already. If you leave it mounted on vehicle and this thing gets into the rain, this will greatly accelerate the rusting process. And rusting is not covered by warranty as stated in different post. So you warned... When I told etrailer about the quality problems... Customer support answer was hilarious. Quote from Odelia K. : "I am sorry but I do not know where you may be able to order this for shipping to the UK." Btw, they just shipped my order to GA, USA... where did I mention UK? I have unpleasant experience with etrailer.com. I would not recommend it.

Comments
I have not seen this metal shaving problem before. I do see that customer service is in contact with you to replace this item. Also, it sounds like Odelia mixed up her emails. I apologize for the confusion.

Works well for transporting two 29" wheeled mountain bikes. However, after one year it's starting to rust in several areas (see attached photos), and the front wheel arms are becoming increasingly difficult to raise and lower. Finally the locking cable is extremely rusty as you can see in the attached photo. I'm not sure how durable this rack will be long term.

Comments
This has a limited lifetime warranty but rust is not covered under warranty. With most aftermarket products like this one, it will need taken off when not in use, lubricated often, and filed and repainted once you noticed rust forming. Here are some tips in this attached article:

I was excited to finally get the bike rack after a long back order...but it was well worth the wait ! It took my husband and I about 35 minutes to assemble it. It was very easy. I had been having to lift my bike in and out of my truck bed and it was taxing on my back. I have used it everyday since installing it and love it. Thank you to the Customer Service department for being so nice when I called several times for updates on my order.

The rack is good, but...if you have a 29 inch front tire, you will need to secure the tire to the seat. I use velcro on the front and rear of the tire seat. It will (and did) pop out. The tire is too large for it to properly fit. I wish all the "joints" we're a bit more snug to stop the sway! Overall it is good...heavy, but good. I'd buy it again!

Comments
I pretty much stand by my first review. However, the tire clamp that was sloppy at the time got much worse. I contacted Yakima and they sent me a completely new tray with rear tire holder and a better front tire clamp. Great customer service.

Really glad I found your web site before I decided on my E bike rack. The Yakima holdup rack I purchased is a quality item and has really nice features for a good price. I like the fact that it clamps down on the tire to hold it tight. I also like the way the rack moves down to load and unload the bikes. It takes a lot of load off my back. The locks ore outstanding as well. This rack has everything I needed. Thank you Ashley for your help when I ordered it. Really good company and staff. Ken from Downey, Calif.

Comments
I have had my Yakima bike rack over 1 year now. It is still delivering all that I had expected in a bike rack. It has helped me ride my Bike over 1000 miles in that year. I, Still, highly recommend this bike rack to anyone that has an Ebike and wants to take it to new places to ride.

Purchased the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for primary use of transporting two BMX Bikes with 20-inch wheels. On occasion bikes with larger wheels up to 27.5 inches have also been used successfully with the rack, to my satisfaction with no rack changes required for the different size wheels. Making 3-4 trips per week to the local BMX track the Yakima HoldUp has provided our family with reliability and a great deal of convenience. Although placement of the rack onto vehicle hitch may be difficult for some users due to its weight, loading and securing bikes onto the rack is extremely easy and user friendly. After a year of use and unhitching the rack with each daily use all parts have proven to be very durable. Other than some light and infrequent lubrication at hinge points I’ve found the rack to require little maintenance. Additional liked features of the rack are its three-position capability, one for regular transport of bikes, a second for a tuck away stow position for no bikes, and a third downward position with no bikes to allow for tailgate opening while rack is fastened to the hitch. Lastly, the built-in locks for securing bikes to rack and rack to hitch are a great feature for convenience and peace of mind. If looking for a hitch bike rack, the Yakima HoldUp is a great place to start for a reliable and trouble-free experience.

The bike rack has held up well for the first year of use. Well designed. We use it for two Specialized E-Bikes. The rack is heavy to install and uninstall on the truck but that comes with a sturdy design.

Comments
2nd year of use with two Specialized e-bikes. And the rack is still working like a champ. No signs of wear issues on any components at this time. Usage rate of about 20 times a year.

Ordered this luckily early on in the supply chain issues of 2020, and etrailer was one of the few retailers that had a reasonable ETA. I opted for the regular holdup over evo as I don't anticipate needing the fat tire support, nor did I want to pay the extra cost. My 4 year old is getting into bikes, so my wife and I bought some hybrids in order to keep up, and get some exercise. Also opted for the holdup because I don't like the hanging style carriers, and hated climbing up and down to get bikes off roof carriers. Rack works great, holds bikes securely, and fits pretty well in a Curt 2" hitch on our 2017 Outback. May eventually try out a hitch tightener to see if it gets rid of some minor wobble and creaking, but otherwise the rack is solid. Left off a star because there are some minor gripes. First, the latch to tilt the rack out of the way of the trunk door is in an awkward place, and requires you to slightly lift the rack to ease pressure on it in order to move. Granted they did fix this in the Evo, but I still don't think it's worth the upcharge. I ended up finding a Swingarm on sale to move the rack completely out of the way of the trunk. Really wish there was an all in one solution, but I get that Yakima wants to sell Exo's and Swingarms. Next, there's no retention point for the arms, so you have to be careful that the sliding piece which holds the arm in place will rest on the rack when not in use. I only had one bike mounted, and didn't realize the other arm had rotated past the rack, and was dragging on the ground when driving. Luckily only lost some non-essential rubber and didn't damage the arm itself (of course yakima sells replacements), but would have been a nice to have some sort of protection for user error, since I can't imagine a scenario in which you'd need the arm to rotate that far. My garage is unfortunately too small to comfortably keep the rack mounted full time, but installing and removing is a breeze. Highly recommend a socket wrench to tighten the bolt, yakima does supply a wrench but it's a pain to operate, especially when the rack is mounted.

Of all the bike carriers I looked at, the Yakima was the clear winner. And etrailer is one of the best vendors I have ever dealt with, whether in my private life or in my business career.

Great improvement over Yakima's older models of this hitch rack. Perfect for my road bike and my wife's electric Townie on the same rack. Quick, free delivery from eTrailer.

Excellent. BUT, the wheel troughs are a bit close together for an electric Townie bike. It fits, but barely.

A well made bike carrier. It holds 2 bikes securely. The locking hitch bolt and locking bike cables also give it security. It is a little heavy to to move around, but I assume most are.

Great rack! I like that it literally takes 2 minutes to put two mountain bikes on or off. Holds bikes securely without scratching or damage. It's so easy to use that it encourages you to just throw the bike on the back of the van and go somewhere. Previously, we had to take the seats out of the mini-van, roll the bikes into the van leaning them against the side, and tie the bikes down inside the van so they wouldn't fall over while driving. This was a major pain.

Comments
Had the rack for 4 years now. It sits on the back of the van spring thru fall, exposed to the weather. It still works great! Yes, there is a little bit of rust forming on certain spots because it is made of steel, and there is a little bit of play in the hinge that folds the rack up, but it is still in really good shape and works like the day we got it. My only complaint is that the security cables are too short to get around my Trek Fuel. Wish these were longer so I could wrap them around the frame and wheel at the same time.

This is a great rack and extremely well made. The consumer assembly is only the two cross arms with two bolts each. I debated between this and a similar Thule. The cable with integrated lock and the lockable hitch pin sold me on this one. I have two K2 29'ers and they fit well in the tire saddles. The pivot arm locks down tight on the front wheel as does the strap on the rear wheel making the bikes are very stable for traveling. The large threaded hitch pin dampen all the slop in the hitch receiver. The only con I have is the 20 degree fold down does not allow my 2009 Town & Country rear hatch to fully open. This may not be a problem with other vehicles. For all the pros on this rack I can live with the con.

Great service and quick delivery. I haven’t used it yet because of the cold weather but my best friend has the exact same one and loves it. Like the fact that it can lock the bikes in and lock the rack to your vehicle. Plus the slant down feature makes it easy to load e bikes. Would definitely recommend trailer to anyone looking for an awesome bike rack!

It only took a couple of days for the rack t arrive after I ordered it. I was impressed how sturdy the rack is. My wife rides a Trek Townie E-bike which is heavy (48 lbs) that I needed a sturdy rack to carry it in addition to mine. My hanging rack in no way would handle the weight (Total with all the gear, 70 lbs). My new rack handled it easily. This rack has some nice features that I looked for in a good rack. It was easy to put together and install on my car. It is fairly heavy but fits perfectly in my 2" hitch. With all the bikes loaded, there isn't any sway or movement with the rack as I drive. The rack sits nice and tight in the receptor. It has security locks that make hauling bikes a safe and secure experience. The cost was a little higher than I wanted to spend but I was glad I did. I know I bought a great product that will last for many years of riding. I highly recommend this rack to anyone looking for a quality rack for their bikes.

Rack is still going strong. The BackSwing attachment allows us to use this while camping, on road trips, etc. and we can access the back hatch on our Outback without removing the bikes. We use this for mountain bikes, as well as our heavy (65 lb) e-bikes. Very sturdy.

The bike rack exceeded my expectations! Well-designed and sturdy , yet not so heavy that I couldn't install it on my vehicle myself. Also E-trailer delivered the product as quickly as promised.

Comments
Entirely disagree with the light enough comment- I purchased the 2 2 version and it has to weigh the most awkward 125 lbs Ive ever carried. Pay the extra $$ and get the KUAT aluminum version. Makes it even more of a PITA when trying to lift it up to vertical. Takes two people and cannot expect my wife and 7 yr old to manhandle it. Enginerds should have used a coil spring to assist with the lift. Also- after owning for 8 months, theres significant pooled corrosion i.e. orangered liquid oozes from every nook/cranny after a rain. They clearly did not protect the interior and expect that very soon the powdercoating will give way to flaking leafs of corroded metal. A huge shame for something that set me back so much $$$.KUAT- lighter and wont rust!

I spent nearly $800 for the 2 up with plus 2. Light enough, maybe if you only use the 2 bike version, it weighs over 50 lbs. I have the older grey 2 up along with the 2 plus making it hold 4 bikes. Combined they weigh about 100 lbs. No way one person can put the receiver in the hole. Very difficult for one person to raise up the unit from horizontal also. Two different size wrenches needed to take on and off bike as I have to remove the plus 2 first, 34 wrench then a 15/16 is needed on hitch. The plus 2 also does not come with a lock to secure it to the 2 up or a cable to lock the bikes to the rack. You will need to purchase them separately, another $50. I have also had two of the arms fail in a little over a year now, they have a lifetime warrantee but that gets old replacing them.Rack does hold bikes very good, but I am not happy overall with my purchase. Other models out there for this kind of money take a look.

This rack is your best bet if you’re looking for an economical and quality platform rack. The comparable Thule and Kuat models do not have an integrated lock system like the Yakima. It was very simple to assemble and even easier to hitch up and load my bike. Works great with a Tacoma. I used to have a hanger-style rack and this platform is far superior.

Just finished installing my new rack. I am VERY happy with the rack from installation to loading and unloading the bikes. Also I was very impressed with etrailer. I was looking for a specific rack and and only knew of one company that offered a rack that could be expanded to hold 2 more bikes. I was about to make my purchase of the very expensive other brand when etrailer suggested I look at the Yakima. I was very impressed with their videos and could see how the rack fit on my car so I purchased the rack and everything was exactly like they explained. I look forward to using this rack for a very long time.

Just received my Yakama 2 bike rack for my 2012 VW Tiguan. It is very well built and simple to install. I especially like how it folds up close to the car when not in use. The rack is not heavy like the Rola that I had before this one. This was my second purchase from e-trailer and will definitely buy from them again. The staff is so friendly and eager to help. The web site is incredible, with install videos on the products.

The Yakima hold up is very sturdy and easy to use bike rack. My bikes are loaded faster than my 16 year old can inhale a cheeseburger. We have the 4 bike extension as well and while it’s big with all 4 bikes in, it’s compact enough and very sturdy when we’re headed to more remote trails. What’s even more excellent is the customer service I’ve received from eTrailer. Yakima had supplier issues and eTrailer kept us informed through the whole process. Even offering alternate racks and calling the supplier directly to get product availability estimates for me. Thank you!

  • Can the Yakima Holdup Fit a 29 inch Bike Wheel
The Yakima Holdup part # Y02443 that you referenced is designed to fit wheels that are between 14 and 29 inches in diameter. There isn't an adapter available to allow the rack to fit larger tires, but you can try deflating the tires a bit to see if you can get them to get small enough to fit the rack.

  • Vertical Clearance Required for Rear Door Opening with Yakima HoldUp 2 Rack Y02443 Installed
I measured the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Platform Hitch Rack # Y02443 when its ratcheting arms are folded down (without bikes) for the dimension you need. This highest part of the folded rack, the wheel cradle, will have a height of 10-inches above the top of the 2-inch shank that fits into the hitch. So to detetrmine fit on your van measure from the top of the receiver opening up to the bottom edges of the barn doors. If this dimension is more than 10-inches then the doors should be able...

  • Can the Yakima HoldUp Bike Carrier be Used with a Hitch Extender
According to Yakima the HoldUp # Y02443 cannot be used with a hitch extender. The issue is that using an extender with a heavy bike rack that extends out pretty far itself would put tremendous stress on the hitch and cause damage. Also, when using a hitch extender it reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. Ideally you would use a bike rack that has a long enough shank to clear what you need it to clear without the use of a hitch extender. I have included a link that...

  • Recommended Hitch-Mount Platform-Style Bike Rack for 2015 Toyota Highlander with OEM Hitch
The OEM hitches supplied on some import vehicles do have a shallow depth from the rear-facing end of the receiver tube to the center of the hitch pin hole. You can certainly use the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02443 in your OEM hitch. You'll just want to check the distance from your hitch pin hole to the rear-most part of the vehicle to ensure enough clearance for the folded rack. The linked article illustrates. The HoldUp 2 provides 7 inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the...

  • Can the Platforms on the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack Be Switched Around
You certainly can switch around the platforms on your Yakima HoldUp Platform Bike Rack # Y02443 in order to change the orientation of the bikes. I spoke with my contact at Yakima and he confirmed this can be done to avoid a conflict on the vehicle, such as your spare tire. The platforms are bolted to the rack base with 4 bolts on each platform. You can remove these bolts to uninstall the platforms. Switch the platforms around, and then reinstall these bolts to secure the rack platforms...

  • How Much Movement Should Yakima Holdup Bike Rack part # Y02443 Have In Hitch Tube
The Yakima Holdup Bike Rack part # Y02443 uses a threaded hitch pin which acts as an anti-rattle device when tightened down. What some people will do is tighten the bolt while moving the rack around in the hitch to help get rid of all of the movement. But there might still be some clearances in the rack that will allow a bit of movement. I attached a test course video for this rack that shows about how much movement is considered normal for this rack.

  • Is Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack a Good Bike Rack for 2017 Lexus RC 350
The Yakima HoldUp part # Y02443 that you referenced is an excellent bike rack. As long as you have a 2 inch hitch installed on your 2017 Lexus RC 350 this would be a really great choice. This rack only touches bikes at the tires so the finish of the bikes is protected well. Also the rack has a higher weight capacity at 60 lbs per bike and is very stable in the hitch on the road and is very easy to load/unload. I attached a review video for the rack for more info on it's features and a...

  • What Kind of Sway is Expected from the Yakima HoldUp During Travel
If you are on rough terrain then you may be seeing some exaggerated movement of the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02443 but since it does have an anti-rattle hitch pin the shank itself should be solid and not moving. The trays would be the parts that you see some movement from just because of how far they stick out. You can see what kind of movement to expect from this bike rack in the attached test course video. If you are getting a lot more movement than that while driving down the road...

In order to determine if the Yakima Holdup 2, # Y02443, will fit your 2009 Acura MDX you will need to take an important measurement. On the vehicle, measure from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the distance required to clear the rear of the vehicle to get the amount of clearance you will need. On the HoldUp, it measures 12 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest bike tray when in the down position. When in the folded up position, it measures 7 inches to the...
