Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack In Use

The Yakima HoldUp is a premium, tray-style bike rack that lets you carry 2 bikes using your vehicle's hitch. This rack is specifically designed to carry bikes with big tires and wide handlebars, but it will carry just about any bike, including those with wheels from 20" to 29", carbon frames, disc brakes, thru axles, or full suspensions.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Large Front Wheel Holders

The HoldUp is easy to load, even if your bikes have monster wheels. The deep, contoured front wheel cradles accommodate just about any wheel out there, and the pivoting arms with StrongArm technology ensure that your bikes are held firmly in place.

Note: Not recommended for use on bikes with front fenders.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Ratcheting Arm

To load a bike, simply place your front wheel in the holder, rotate the pivoting arm up and over the wheel, and press down firmly on the ratcheting hook. To release the hook, simply press the built-in red button and slide the hook up and off your wheel.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Adjustable Rear Wheel Cradles

Large rear wheel holders allow the HoldUp to accommodate a wide variety of bike wheelbases. These wheel holders pivot front to back, adjusting automatically to your wheel size - no need for sliding and tightening. Secure the wheels in place with the ratcheting straps built into each holder.

Yakima HoldUp Ratcheting Arm No Frame Contact

Mounting bikes by the wheels helps prevent any scratches or scuffs to the paint. The ratcheting hooks are padded, however, so they won't mark your wheels. And the pivot mechanisms in the arms are overbuilt to ensure they keep functioning smoothly over a lifetime of hard use.

Fully Adjustability Bike Trays

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Adjustable Bike Trays

The wheel trays on the HoldUp are fully adjustable to ensure that you have all the space you need when mounting bikes with mammoth handlebars, such as a 29er. To adjust a wheel tray, loosen the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the rack base and slide the tray left or right to achieve the desired spacing. Retighten the bolts and you're ready to roll with optimum handlebar clearance and no fear of bike-to-bike contact during transport.

Complete Security

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Built-in Cable Locks

The HoldUp has a cable lock built into the end of each pivoting arm. These cables loop through your bike frames and attach to posts on the bike rack arms to secure your bikes in place. The cables store in the arms when not in use.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Locking Hitch Pin

The rack also has a HitchLock hitch pin that allows you to lock the rack to your vehicle. The threaded pin also works as an anti-rattle device to reduce noise and movement of the rack when it's mounted in your trailer hitch receiver.

The cable locks and HitchLock hitch pin include keyed-alike Same Key System (SKS) lock cores. These cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Tilting Design and Compact Storage

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Folded for Storage

The HoldUp stores more compactly than similar platform-style racks, and features a spring-loaded pin at the base that lets you fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle when it's not in use. First rotate the front wheel holders inward and tilt the rear wheel holders inward, then rotate the pivot arms down and use the ratcheting hooks to secure the arms to the rear wheel holders. Once the arms are in place, pull the pin and fold the rack up against your vehicle.

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Tilted for Rear Cargo Access

The same pin tilts the rack down, while fully loaded, so you can gain access to your vehicle's rear cargo area without having to unload your bikes.

Optional 2-Bike Add-On

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack 2 Bike Add-on

There is a 2-bike add-on available (Y02446 - sold separately) for the HoldUp that will allow you convert it from a 2-bike carrier to a 4-bike carrier. To install the add-on on your HoldUp, simply remove the endcap from the bike rack base, slide the add-on's shank into the hole on the bike rack, and secure the shank with a bolt that comes with the add-on.

Works well for transporting two 29" wheeled mountain bikes. However, after one year it's starting to rust in several areas (see attached photos), and the front wheel arms are becoming increasingly difficult to raise and lower. Finally the locking cable is extremely rusty as you can see in the attached photo. I'm not sure how durable this rack will be long term.

Comments
This has a limited lifetime warranty but rust is not covered under warranty. With most aftermarket products like this one, it will need taken off when not in use, lubricated often, and filed and repainted once you noticed rust forming. Here are some tips in this attached article:

I was excited to finally get the bike rack after a long back order...but it was well worth the wait ! It took my husband and I about 35 minutes to assemble it. It was very easy. I had been having to lift my bike in and out of my truck bed and it was taxing on my back. I have used it everyday since installing it and love it. Thank you to the Customer Service department for being so nice when I called several times for updates on my order.

Ordered this luckily early on in the supply chain issues of 2020, and etrailer was one of the few retailers that had a reasonable ETA. I opted for the regular holdup over evo as I don't anticipate needing the fat tire support, nor did I want to pay the extra cost. My 4 year old is getting into bikes, so my wife and I bought some hybrids in order to keep up, and get some exercise. Also opted for the holdup because I don't like the hanging style carriers, and hated climbing up and down to get bikes off roof carriers. Rack works great, holds bikes securely, and fits pretty well in a Curt 2" hitch on our 2017 Outback. May eventually try out a hitch tightener to see if it gets rid of some minor wobble and creaking, but otherwise the rack is solid. Left off a star because there are some minor gripes. First, the latch to tilt the rack out of the way of the trunk door is in an awkward place, and requires you to slightly lift the rack to ease pressure on it in order to move. Granted they did fix this in the Evo, but I still don't think it's worth the upcharge. I ended up finding a Swingarm on sale to move the rack completely out of the way of the trunk. Really wish there was an all in one solution, but I get that Yakima wants to sell Exo's and Swingarms. Next, there's no retention point for the arms, so you have to be careful that the sliding piece which holds the arm in place will rest on the rack when not in use. I only had one bike mounted, and didn't realize the other arm had rotated past the rack, and was dragging on the ground when driving. Luckily only lost some non-essential rubber and didn't damage the arm itself (of course yakima sells replacements), but would have been a nice to have some sort of protection for user error, since I can't imagine a scenario in which you'd need the arm to rotate that far. My garage is unfortunately too small to comfortably keep the rack mounted full time, but installing and removing is a breeze. Highly recommend a socket wrench to tighten the bolt, yakima does supply a wrench but it's a pain to operate, especially when the rack is mounted.

Great improvement over Yakima's older models of this hitch rack. Perfect for my road bike and my wife's electric Townie on the same rack. Quick, free delivery from eTrailer.

Comments
Excellent. BUT, the wheel troughs are a bit close together for an electric Townie bike. It fits, but barely.

Great rack! I like that it literally takes 2 minutes to put two mountain bikes on or off. Holds bikes securely without scratching or damage. It's so easy to use that it encourages you to just throw the bike on the back of the van and go somewhere. Previously, we had to take the seats out of the mini-van, roll the bikes into the van leaning them against the side, and tie the bikes down inside the van so they wouldn't fall over while driving. This was a major pain.

Comments
Had the rack for 4 years now. It sits on the back of the van spring thru fall, exposed to the weather. It still works great! Yes, there is a little bit of rust forming on certain spots because it is made of steel, and there is a little bit of play in the hinge that folds the rack up, but it is still in really good shape and works like the day we got it. My only complaint is that the security cables are too short to get around my Trek Fuel. Wish these were longer so I could wrap them around the frame and wheel at the same time.

The Yakima hold up is very sturdy and easy to use bike rack. My bikes are loaded faster than my 16 year old can inhale a cheeseburger. We have the 4 bike extension as well and while it’s big with all 4 bikes in, it’s compact enough and very sturdy when we’re headed to more remote trails. What’s even more excellent is the customer service I’ve received from eTrailer. Yakima had supplier issues and eTrailer kept us informed through the whole process. Even offering alternate racks and calling the supplier directly to get product availability estimates for me. Thank you!

It only took a couple of days for the rack t arrive after I ordered it. I was impressed how sturdy the rack is. My wife rides a Trek Townie E-bike which is heavy (48 lbs) that I needed a sturdy rack to carry it in addition to mine. My hanging rack in no way would handle the weight (Total with all the gear, 70 lbs). My new rack handled it easily. This rack has some nice features that I looked for in a good rack. It was easy to put together and install on my car. It is fairly heavy but fits perfectly in my 2" hitch. With all the bikes loaded, there isn't any sway or movement with the rack as I drive. The rack sits nice and tight in the receptor. It has security locks that make hauling bikes a safe and secure experience. The cost was a little higher than I wanted to spend but I was glad I did. I know I bought a great product that will last for many years of riding. I highly recommend this rack to anyone looking for a quality rack for their bikes.

We got a great price from this Vendor. The item was on back order for a few months. The vendor kept us informed of the order status and even offered other items throughout the process. The original bacame available in October and was immediately shipped to our door. Tracking was available and delivery was made. I would recommend e trailer for any kind of vehicle, bike carrier need.

We needed a bike carrier that could handle our heavy 55 lb e-bikes. Looks like this one will do it just fine. I like the built in locking cable feature, and locked hitch bolt. Folds up nice, out of the way, when not in use.

Comments
Its a great carrier, the best, but I would like to see it produced in two models. One that rises up from the hitch, as this does, and one the s lower from the hitch, for high 4 wheel drive vehicles and front hitchs, so its lower to see over the bikes.

Just finished installing my new rack. I am VERY happy with the rack from installation to loading and unloading the bikes. Also I was very impressed with etrailer. I was looking for a specific rack and and only knew of one company that offered a rack that could be expanded to hold 2 more bikes. I was about to make my purchase of the very expensive other brand when etrailer suggested I look at the Yakima. I was very impressed with their videos and could see how the rack fit on my car so I purchased the rack and everything was exactly like they explained. I look forward to using this rack for a very long time.

Good rack. Easy to install. Has areas near the pivot where the rack will rattle and am awaiting for technician to recommend what can be done to decrease the looseness. Otherwise, a good rack that holds our two eBikes.

This is a great rack and extremely well made. The consumer assembly is only the two cross arms with two bolts each. I debated between this and a similar Thule. The cable with integrated lock and the lockable hitch pin sold me on this one. I have two K2 29'ers and they fit well in the tire saddles. The pivot arm locks down tight on the front wheel as does the strap on the rear wheel making the bikes are very stable for traveling. The large threaded hitch pin dampen all the slop in the hitch receiver. The only con I have is the 20 degree fold down does not allow my 2009 Town & Country rear hatch to fully open. This may not be a problem with other vehicles. For all the pros on this rack I can live with the con.

I use this rack on my 2017 Buick Envision. Its simple and sturdy enough to hold 2 large mountain bikes. Conveniently folds up when not in use so I leave on my car all summer long. It is heavy, so taking on and off was not really possible for me. There are three points of tie down for your bike. One over the wheel using the arm, a strap for the other wheel around the rim and a third with the included lock allowing you to secure it to your rack (and car). No issues at all with movement. Felt safe travelling down the road. I've had to keep the release that holds the rack up or down in position well greased. The release is held in place by a strong spring and my less than strong grip struggles with it. I purchased this one over a similar rack due to the cost but the similar rack had a release on the end (where the bottle opener is on this one). I don't know if I would have the same problem using the release in that location as opposed to this one.

Works great! Sturdy…. Easy for me to put bike on and off! Love that the rack locks to car and bike locks to rack.

We purchased this bike rack to put on the back of our camper's reinforced bumper. We absolutely love it. We used to have a bike bunk in front of the camper over the propane tanks and it was a major production to get those bikes on and off the carrier. This Yakima was the perfect solution. The bikes are very stable (we've driven over 10,000 miles with this setup), the bikes are very easy to get on and off, and we really like the tray concept. Highly recommended!

Etrailer was great to work with. They answered a bunch of questions several times over the year before I finally pulled the trigger. I like this rack. It is a great value. I have two complaints. 1) the tire clamp just barley fits over my 29 inch wheel. It does work though. 2) the built in cable lock for the bike does not have enough slack to run it through both my front wheel and the frame. Over all, it appears to be the best deal on a brand name wheel mount 2 bike rack with the option to expand to a 4 bike rack as my family grows. I don't know that I would spend any extra money to remedy those two minor issues.

Just received my Yakama 2 bike rack for my 2012 VW Tiguan. It is very well built and simple to install. I especially like how it folds up close to the car when not in use. The rack is not heavy like the Rola that I had before this one. This was my second purchase from e-trailer and will definitely buy from them again. The staff is so friendly and eager to help. The web site is incredible, with install videos on the products.

- Y02443
by:

This rack is your best bet if you’re looking for an economical and quality platform rack. The comparable Thule and Kuat models do not have an integrated lock system like the Yakima. It was very simple to assemble and even easier to hitch up and load my bike. Works great with a Tacoma. I used to have a hanger-style rack and this platform is far superior.

- Y02443
by:

Seems well designed and should hold up over time. Had some paint damage from shipping but area was covered up once put together. I preferred the Kuat Transfer 2 Bike because of the U frame and easy kick button to lower rack. Lowering this rack requires you to be able to support the frame and bikes with one hand while you operate the release with your other hand. The cable locks with this rack are pretty short and you may not be able to lock your frame and front wheel at same time. I plan to use a separate cable lock so someone can't take my front wheel (29) with quick release.

- Y02443
by:

The rack is good, but...if you have a 29 inch front tire, you will need to secure the tire to the seat. I use velcro on the front and rear of the tire seat. It will (and did) pop out. The tire is too large for it to properly fit. I wish all the "joints" we're a bit more snug to stop the sway! Overall it is good...heavy, but good. I'd buy it again!

- Y02443
by:

Great product, easy to assemble, sturdy and well built. I like that it locks the wheel vs. the frame. Very easy to use. Like the fact that it has the locks built into it.

The bike rack exceeded my expectations! Well-designed and sturdy , yet not so heavy that I couldn't install it on my vehicle myself. Also E-trailer delivered the product as quickly as promised.

Comments
Entirely disagree with the light enough comment- I purchased the 2 2 version and it has to weigh the most awkward 125 lbs Ive ever carried. Pay the extra $$ and get the KUAT aluminum version. Makes it even more of a PITA when trying to lift it up to vertical. Takes two people and cannot expect my wife and 7 yr old to manhandle it. Enginerds should have used a coil spring to assist with the lift. Also- after owning for 8 months, theres significant pooled corrosion i.e. orangered liquid oozes from every nook/cranny after a rain. They clearly did not protect the interior and expect that very soon the powdercoating will give way to flaking leafs of corroded metal. A huge shame for something that set me back so much $$$.KUAT- lighter and wont rust!

I spent nearly $800 for the 2 up with plus 2. Light enough, maybe if you only use the 2 bike version, it weighs over 50 lbs. I have the older grey 2 up along with the 2 plus making it hold 4 bikes. Combined they weigh about 100 lbs. No way one person can put the receiver in the hole. Very difficult for one person to raise up the unit from horizontal also. Two different size wrenches needed to take on and off bike as I have to remove the plus 2 first, 34 wrench then a 15/16 is needed on hitch. The plus 2 also does not come with a lock to secure it to the 2 up or a cable to lock the bikes to the rack. You will need to purchase them separately, another $50. I have also had two of the arms fail in a little over a year now, they have a lifetime warrantee but that gets old replacing them.Rack does hold bikes very good, but I am not happy overall with my purchase. Other models out there for this kind of money take a look.

This is a very well made and cleverly engineered product. After a few times I am able to mount or dismount two bikes in less than a minute. The bikes are held on very securely and there is no noise from the rack moving around while driving. My only criticism is that, if you put the rack on and take it off frequently the wrench that comes with it is a joke. Just leave a 15/16 inch socket and ratchet in your car and you will be able to remove it and put it on in no time. It would be five stars if Yakima included the socket and ratchet.

Bike carriers that are designed to work on the rear of an RV are made so that they can take the additional stress at the back of the RV. • Comparing the Yakima HoldUp 2 Part # Y02443 with the Kuat Transfer 2
For your 2017 Lexus NX, the best bike rack for you is going to depend on the type of bikes you have and how often you plan to carry them. Both the Kuat Transfer 2 part # KU74FR and the Yakima HoldUp 2 part # Y02443 are excellent bike racks that will work well for you. However, I recommend the Yakima HoldUp as it has a bit more features that will work with your bikes and vehicle better than the Kuat Transfer will. For starters, the HoldUp can carry bikes weighing up to 60 lbs each whereas...

  • Why Won't Replacement 1-1/4" Tongue # 8880581 Fit in 1-1/4" Receiver
If you currently have the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443 for 2" receivers then it is for some Class II but mostly Class III receivers. However, since you installed the Replacement 1-1/4" Tongue # 8880581 this essentially made it part # Y02445 which is compatible with 1-1/4" receivers as long as they don't have a weld stop like some Class I receivers have (see attached photo). If the problem is that you can't get the shank of the bike rack to even start in the receiver then I would measure the...

  • Comparing the Yakima HoldUp 2 and the Kuat Sherpa 2.0
Between the Yakima HoldUp 2, part # Y02443 and the Sherpa 2.0, part # SH22G, I personally like both, however, they are built around different bikes and uses. The Yakima HoldUp is a better rack if you have kids bikes, heavier bikes, or could possibly need a 4 bike carrier in the future. The rack is expandable to carry a total of 4 bikes with part # Y02446, or the two out of the base model. The HoldUp is also able to carry bikes with 14 to 29 inch wheels, covering a wide grouping of family...

  • Spare Tire Carrier Mounted on Yakima HoldUp
Your Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Platform Style - Tilting # Y02443 is not intended to hold a spare tire, but it's weight capacity of 60 lbs per bike should give it the durablity to do so. Using this rack for a spare tire will definitely void its warranty. Using a spare tire carrier like the MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier for 3" x 5" Trailer Frames - 4-Lug and 5-Lug Wheels # MT70214 will be really bulky and won't attach to a bike frame without some customization. You may...

  • Recommended 2 Bike Platform Rack for E-Bikes
It looks like the Aventon Pace 500 e-bikes weigh in at around 50-lbs per bike, so you'll need something that can handle at least that much, and because of the weight of the bikes you'll also need to have a 2" hitch receiver on your 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. I recommend using the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02443 which will tilt away to allow you access to the rear of the vehicle and can handle bikes up to 60-lbs. Since it's a platform rack it will be easy to get the bikes on and off, which...

  • Platform Style 2 Bike Rack to Fit 1-1/4 and 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receivers
I have a solution for you, but the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack # Y02443 should not be used with any kind of hitch extender or hitch adapter. These are guidelines per Yakima for the HoldUp bike rack. For a great quality 2 bike, platform-style bike rack that will fit both 1-1/4 and 2 inch trailer hitches, I recommend the Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Platform Rack # KU74FR. This rack has some of the same great features as the HoldUp. The Transfer folds up against the vehicle when there are not...

  • Will The Yakima HoldUp Bike Carrier Hold Bikes with Step-Through Frames
If you are not transporting all 3 of the step-through bikes at the same time then you could use the HoldUp, # Y02443, which has a 2 bike capacity. Otherwise you would use the 4-bike version, # Y02443-2. As long as the bikes do not have fenders on the front tires then the bikes will fit just fine. Some bikes have short fenders that do not cover much of the top of the tire. That would work too. To determine if the carrier will fit your vehicle there are a couple of measurements that need...

  • Does Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack Work With Large Tires
There is a bike rack very similar to the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02443 which will accommodate your 2.8" wide tires, though this rack will only work with tires that are a maximum of 2.5" wide. I highly recommend the Yakima HoldUp EVO 2 Bike Platform Rack # Y02479 which works with tires that are up to 5" wide and bikes with diameters between 20" and 29" as well as wheelbases up to 48". The HoldUp EVO is an upgraded version of the HoldUp, a wheel-mounted rack with an integrated...

  • Does Curt Trailer Hitch For 2018 Acura RDX Require Spacer Blocks & Work With Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack
Spacers are not needed in order to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13130 on your 2018 Acura RDX and the reason is Curt decided that the hitch would fit fine without them, even though it will push up against the underneath fascia a bit. This is in contrast to the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75784, which, like you pointed out, does require spacer blocks in order to ensure the hitch wasn't pushing up against that fascia. Both will work though, and there hasn't been any...

  • Can the Yakima Holdup # Y02433 Be used with Bikes that Have Fenders
The Yakima HoldUp you referenced isn't a good choice for bike with fenders. The ratcheting hooks can't be tightened enough to get a good hold on the front bike wheels. For bikes with fenders a better choice would be one of the following bike racks. The Thule Doubletrack Pro XT Bike Carrier, item # TH92BJ, will accept bikes up to 35 pounds each and is also a high quality rack that comes with locks to secure the bikes to the rack and the rack to the vehicle. As a bonus, the rack can fold...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack to Accommodate Two 65 Pound Ezip Bikes
I have two bike racks with a 120 lb capacity, the Yakima HoldUp, part # Y02443, or the Thule T2, part # TH9044. If the bikes have a battery that could be removed to shed 5 lbs from each bike, you would be in business with either rack. I prefer the locking ratchet hook system on the Thule rack over the cable used by the Yakima model.

  • Is Replacement Tray for Yakima HoldUp EVO Compatible with Original HoldUp Bike Rack
The Yakima HoldUp # Y02443 and the HoldUp EVO # Y02479 are similar, but the designs are different enough that replacement parts aren't interchangeable. There have been 3 different models of the HoldUp so if you can let me know which one you have I can see if we have the replacement parts. The original HoldUp (2008-2009) was silver and had basic functions. The next HoldUp (2009-2012) was also silver but Yakima added some upgrades with a spring loaded pull pin, pivoting arms that stopped...

  • Best Bike Rack That Allows Easy Loading For Aventon Pace 500 Step-Thru Electric Bike
The Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # Y02443 would work well for your Aventon Pace 500 electric step-thru bike. Since you don't have fenders or baskets, the ratcheting hooks can clamp around your wheels without any interference. The weight capacity is 60lbs per bike so you won't have an issue there. The only downside is that this bike rack does weigh about 49lbs which could be difficult to handle, so it may be a good idea to have an extra set of hands when...

  • Bike Rack That Will Carry a Pair of 50 lb Electric Bikes
We do have a bike rack that will work for you but the Swagman Semi 2.0 # S64686 has a weight capacity of 45 lbs per bike. Instead, I highly recommend the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443 which has a weight capacity of 60 lbs per bike. The HoldUp # Y02443 is similar to the Swagman you asked about in that it fits 2 inch hitches, uses ratcheting hooks on the arms to hold your bikes by the wheels so there is no frame contact and can be tilted down for access to your rear cargo area as well as folded...

There will be no trunk bike rack that will be able to handle two 50 lbs. bikes on your 1995 Honda Civic Si 3-door. The only hitch I have for your vehicle is a Curt Class I Trailer Hitch, # 11209. It has a tongue weight rating of 200 lbs. The Curt hitch also requires use of a Curt Bike Rack Stabilizing Strap, # 18050, on any non-trailer loads, like a bike rack on this hitch.
