Video Transcript for Westin PRO TRAXX Oval Nerf Bars Installation - 2018 Toyota Tundra

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Toyota Tundra, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Westin PRO TRAXX 4" Oval Nerf Bars. These are in polished stainless steel. The part number is 21-23250. Now, here's what our Nerf Bars are going to look like installed. As you can see, they really add a good look to the truck. They kind of finish out that bottom line, especially in this instance with the chrome on the front and the back.

It just kind of flows right through. You can see they're turned in on either ends. They're going to run up straight, and have that little bit of a turn in. I think it gives it a really nice look, kind of contours along with the vehicle. Here you can see your nice wide step pad.

I think this is a huge improvement over the step pads we used to see, which we're basically just like little stickers that kind of wrapped around. Those could be pretty slippery. These have a nice raised tread to them, so even with dirt, moisture, things like that on your feet, as you step on there, you should be able to get a good grip. Overall, these are going to be 4" wide, so it's going to offer you good footing as you're stepping in and out. Also, these are a polymer material. They've been treated to resist UV rays.

We're not going to have to worry about cracking, fading, and things like that. You'll notice here also, each of our brackets have the plastic cover on them. Same type of material, polymer material. Resists the fading, stands up against road salts, and those kinds of elements, but it gives me a really nice clean look. You don't have to see just that single metal bracket come down, and each one of those are going to have a cover on them.Something I really like about these Nerf Bars are the way the brackets are designed.

They're made specifically for this application, so it's not like a universal kit that we have to kind of piece together, making it even easier. The brackets go directly into already existing weld nuts in the rocker panel here, so we don't have to worry about using any kind of Nutserts, or any kind of spacers, any kind of locks to get attachment points. They're all already here. We can bolt directly to them. Now, the brackets themselves are heavy duty steel construction. Of course, we want that because we're going to be putting weight down on them, but they also have a nice black powder coat finish, so should resist corrosion for a very long time.Something else I like about these. The ends, front and back, are fully sealed all the way around. If we compare that to the older style Nerf Bars and running boards, those just had like a plastic cap on the end. Well, that plastic cap generally let in moisture, let in water, and then on the bottom side here, they'd really rust out. This being fully sealed like that, we're really not going to have to worry about that. In addition with it being polished stainless steel, it's going to hold up to corrosion very well anyway. The positioning of both steps is also quite nice, whether you're getting in the front or the back. It seems to be in the ideal location to where you could get right in there and get on the seats. This series of Nerf bars from Westin gets really good customer reviews. All of them are easy to install, nice and sturdy, and they last for a very long time. The closest comparison you would have here would be more of the matte finish, while all Westin steps are going to provide you about the same kind of footing, and the same width, but if you prefer, there is the matte finish, if you want something that's not as noticeable. Now, we're going to begin our installation here on the driver's side front of the truck. We're going to come right underneath the door seam. Follow the pinch weld back, and we're going to find a bolt right here in our rocker panel. We're going to use a 12 millimeter socket to remove that. You can see that one's right there. We'll take it out.Now if we come straight back, we're going to have two more. Those are located right here. Now we'll skip to here, and take out the ones closer to the rear of the rear door. Now we can take our front bracket. It's the one that has the angle on the top. See that here, and our connection tab is going to point rearward, and we'll grab one of our M8 bolts. You want to put a flat washer and lock washer on there. We'll thread one into the hole we just removed that bolt from. The other one, we're going to thread into the already existing hole that was right behind that. Now we're going to take the slack out here, but we don't want to fully tighten them at this time. For our next position back, we're going to use the bracket. It's going to look very similar to the rear bracket, but this rear edge is rounded. On the rear bracket, that's going to be on a sharp angle, so that'll be cut off flat. We're going to use the same type hardware for all of our attachment points here to the truck, and again, we want to snug them up, but not tighten them down at this point. For this, you'll want to use a 13 millimeter. then our rear bracket here, of course it's going to go into the rear location. There you can see that flat spot we we're talking about. Now we've got our plastic bracket covers. These are just made to give us a nice appearance. You can see there's a slot here on the back. Now, as we put these in place, we want this top edge to sit in between the bracket and the pinch weld there, so we'll kind of started them up high, rotate them up and in.Then we're going to take our small hex bolts. They're going to be M6s, and a flat washer. We're going to place those through like that. and on the other side, we want to put on another flat washer, and also one of our nylon lock nuts, and again we're just going to leave these loose for now. We can tighten them up in one of our last steps. we're going to do that on the two remaining here on the driver's side. Now with the brackets loosely installed, we'll take the appropriate step. Now generally, they're labeled, but you want, for the driver's side, these two holes that are closer to each other, you want those to be forward. You want these in turn in towards the vehicle. The hole for the rear are going to be further separated, so that needs to be towards the back. We'll rest that right up on our brackets. Kind of let the brackets hold it in place. I'm going to get one of our M10 bolts this time. A flat washer on it with a serrated lock washer. I'm going to thread one of those in here, and we'll get one in the rear most bracket, and then we can install the four remaining. Now we'll start getting everything tightened down. We've got our six bolts installed here that hold the tube to the brackets. The first bolts we want to tighten down are going to be the ones that connect the brackets to the truck, and you will have torque specifications in your instructions, so be sure to check that.Next step's going to be to tighten the fasteners going through our brackets into the steps, and when you do this, you have the opportunity to level out your steps. You can see you can kind of move these in or out, so get them where you're comfortable, where you think they're good and level, and we'll start securing our button head bolts. Now for these, we're going to use a six millimeter Allen key. And again, these have torque specs, so be sure to follow them. Now for our little plastic cover bolts, the little M6s, we're going to use a couple of 10 millimeters, and we'll get those secured. Now all you have to do is head over to the passenger side, and you're going to repeat that exact same process. That'll complete our installation of the Westin PRO TRAXX 4" Oval Nerf Bars, part number 21-23250, on our 2018 Toyota Tundra.

Installation of Nerf Bars was a breeze. So easy using the factory mounting holes. Perfect size for the regular cab truck.
Thule rack also straight forward install. We plan to load it up this week and really test it out. Looking forward to putting all of this equipment to work.

by:

These rails look amazing on my truck!! Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the drivers side and passenger side are different and instructions only displays drivers side. 1.5 hour installation still not bad!

by:

These arrived a day earlier than was told. The box was in good condition and all of the parts were included. The installation instructions were good and the online videos helped. I installed them right after they were delivered. The bars look really good, I'm surprised at only 3 mounts per side though. Kinda looks like it should have 4. They are solid and I'm expecting many years of use.

by:

I haven't had any reason to dislike the nerf bars I purchased a year ago . They look good on my truck and the way they were installed in exactly right place . At times I wish I had got stainless but other than that , they are perfect .

by:

I like that feel very solid no flexing when anyone stands on them. I have had a couple of friends who really like the look of them on the truck and ask where I got them. After one year of them on my 2022 Colorado I have had no problems at all.

by:

Made it easier to enter the truck. Not to hard for one person to install by themselves. I love the way they look.

by:

Look great! Easy to install! Glad we purchased them.

by:

Quality of the product is great, however the instructions weren't very clear. Now that they are installed I am very happy.

by:

Parts fit and installation was a breeze. The instructions should tell you that brackets have a stamp for location: Driver Side and Passenger Side. Found out via [online] (PF = Passenger Front, DF= Driver Front, PR = Passenger Rear, DR = Driver Rear. Otherwise the running board looks great

by:

Super easy to install, so save yourself a little time and put the little black plastic vanity pieces on before you mount anything to the vehicle..did passenger that way and it was much easier. Even with doing the drivers side the order of instructions it still only took 45 minutes start to finish, had I done both sides with the vanity pieces first probably would have been done in 30 minutes.

by:

These nerf bars are great! They are very well constructed, are easy to install, and look good. The fit my 2020 F-350 perfectly. They also are a great price. I went with the matte black finish and it looks great. I like the fact that the ends of the bars welded shut unlike other bars I have had which typically have had a plastic cap over the end. The plastic cap will eventually leak and the bars rust from the inside out. These bars do ride a bit higher than my old OEM Ford nerf bars did. This gives improves the look but creates a higher step. The one thing I would suggest to the manufacturer is to supply a few extra spacer washer in the kit for the purpose of leveling it out visually.

Ordered Westin 4" running boards cab length for 2024 Chevy 2500. Product arrived quickly and matched exactly as ordered. Perfect fit and easy to install. Would highly recommend.

by:

Extreme helpful determining the right product and getting it to me quickly. It was exactly as advertised and installed easily. Continues to work even better than expected. Thank you.

by:

We were able to mount the running boards in a bout 2 hours total. They are very sturdy, everything lined up exactly, and they look Great! I had to call tech support because the instructions had not been updated to make sure it would fit my 2019 4Runner. They answered the phone quickly and confirmed that they would fit all the way up to a 2023 4Runner and they were easy to mount!

by:

Good points:
The rails and brackets lined
up pervert with the Dodge provided rod posts.
All in all installation was tight and sturdy.

Not so good points:
The stainless finish lacked a brilliant shine that I expected.
Had some dull spots. Stainless thickness gauge seamed a little light.
Installation instructions we’re not clear.
Brackets instructions should have diagram showing the layout.
Hardware could of been labeled better as well.

by:

Easy installation and a nice upgrade for my truck.

by:

The nerf bars I purchased a year ago have held up wonderfully. They have no rust and the color is still fantastic. They were a great addition to my truck. They changed the look of my stock 2019 Ram 1500 completely.

by:

We really like the look and fitment of the nerf bars, however, the steps are a little too slick when it gets wet.

by:

Easy installation and look great

by:

Installed one year ago on my 2015 Jeep Rubicon Wrangler Unlimited. Installation was simple, with the exception of one thing. To install the step you must permanently remove the "rock sliders" with leaves the bottom seam of the body exposed.
The steps still look in newish condition, except for the color (now dark gray) which has caught up with all the black plastic on my Jeep, thanks to the AZ sun. The rubber tread can be slick when wet.

by:

Great nerfs! Easy install and they look fine on my 19 Colorado. The price was right and etrailer under-promised and over delivers with fantastic shipping! I am 73 years old and had them install with no hoist in an hour and a half. Simple tools and follow the directions for a great install.

by:

Very easy to install and tip to clean off vehicle factory installed threaded studs, first, before installing the nerf bar brackets was very helpful. Fit was perfect!

by:

I got help from Matthew to make sure I got the right set of nerf bars. Order came within a few days. It was easy peasy putting the nerf bars on. The instructions and videos were right on. I’ve ordered from trailer before and every time is an easy task. Thanks and keep up the good work.

by:

I am very happy with the nerf bars. The package was missing 2 lock washers but I had some that fit so it was not a huge issue. Installation was easy. I installed them in a couple of hours. They look great on my truck and make it much easier for my family to climb in and out. I have purchased other products from etrailer (a bike rack and a hitch basket) and they were fantastic also. In my opinion this is a good company with good products and service.
