Light dimensions

Need extra light over your RV kitchen sink for when you do the dishes? Or perhaps you need to upgrade the dim, old lights in your travel trailer? This dome light has cool white LEDs that give you brighter light underneath a kitchen cabinet, in a walkway, in a closet, or inside your enclosed trailer.

Optronics Dome Light LEDs

LEDs are more energy efficient, last longer, and burn brighter than lights with incandescent bulbs. You won't have to worry about replacing bulbs that have brittle filaments. And because LEDs draw minimal power, the light won't drain your battery, overload your circuits, or produce too much heat.

LED Circuit Board Has Surface-Mount Technology

Optronics Dome Light LEDs

Unlike other LED lights, this dome light has an LED circuit board with durable, surface-mount technology. This technology will better resist the shock and vibration that happens when you drive over rough roads. And it improves heat distribution, which means that you won't burn your fingers when you need to do maintenance.

Raw Lumens vs. Effective Lumens

Lumens are utilized to measure the actual amount of light that you can see and use from a light source. If you need a super bright light for a workspace, you will want to go with a light that has a higher lumen count. If you want a softer glow in an RV living space, you should go with a light that has a lower lumen count.

Light sources typically have 2 different kinds of lumens: raw and effective. Raw lumens represent the natural amount of light that a manufacturer says their light fixtures can produce. Effective lumens, on the other hand, represent the usable brightness of the entire light assembly, including the drive method or any lenses or reflectors.

Surface-Mount, Bolt-On Installation is Easy

Optronics Dome Light Installed

This surface-mount dome light is incredibly easy to install as an upgrade or direct replacement of your existing light. To access the bolt holes, slide the lens off the housing. Do not use any tools to remove the lens, as it will crack. Then, using hardware (not included), bolt the housing onto the ceiling, wall, or cabinet before re-installing the lens. The light wires to a switch inside your RV and hooks up to ground (white wire) and power (black wire).

Video Transcript for Optronics Low Profile Led Trailer Dome Light Installation

Hey. What's going on, everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Optronics LED trailer light. Our light's gonna have about a length of 5 3/4 inches, and it's gonna have a height of about 2 3/4 inches. Pretty small for the amount of light that this thing puts off. Our clear plastic lens is held on by two little screws.

So to get a better look at the inside, I just take a little Phillips screwdriver. Short little machine screws. And we'll get a closer look at the rest of the light. Just leave it just like that. So as you can see, we're gonna have about 10 different diodes right here, and that is gonna be an LED diode.

So these are nice just because they're gonna last a lot longer than the incandescent bulbs that you may have, and they're gonna draw a lot less amperage. This is gonna be for our 12-volt DC system, so if your trailer or camper is running off of 24, we're not gonna be able to use this light specifically. But the 10 diodes are only gonna draw about 0.024 amps, which isn't hardly at all a lot. So if we compare that to an incandescent bulb, we're probably gonna be able to put about twice as many LED lights in here, giving us about three times as much light. And it's gonna draw about three times less than your standard incandescent bulbs, so I would highly recommend getting LEDs.

And these 10 diodes are gonna give us about 53 lumens, so as I turn this light on, you'll see it's really, really bright, and it does give us a nice white light. It's not super blue, but it's also not super warm either. Our mounting holes are gonna be about 4 11/16 inches apart. So whenever you do go to install it, that's gonna be the distance between the two. We're gonna have four different spots.

So the only thing we have left to do now is just to show you how to install. So if you stick around, we're gonna show you how we did it. First thing we wanna do is figure out where we want the light. I want it to go right here to replace the light that was here before. If you have wires ran, great. We can skip that step. If not, we are gonna have to run a negative and a positive wire. And we wanna make sure that it's gonna be 12 volts as this light is gonna be for your 12-volt systems. So I'll put this aside for now and we're gonna take care of these wires. So what I like to do is you wanna twist these up just so they go in the connector's a little bit easier. And I like using heat shrink butt connectors. These are the best in my opinion, just because they're gonna give it a nice seal. So water's not gonna get in 'em. And it really does do more than just crimping down. Once we heat these up, they'll be nice and tight. So give it a good tug, make sure it is nice and snug on both ends. And we are good there. It would be smart to test the wires. A lot of the times, the colors don't always correspond with what positive and negative are. So be sure to check and make sure you have the right one. I already did, so I know what I'm doing. So now, you can take our light here and do the same exact thing. So luckily, the colors match up. But again, not always the case. If you wired your trailer, it's probably right. But if you bought the trailer that was already wired, you never know what someone did. So crimp these down nice and tight. Crimp this down and before I go ahead and heat this up, what I like to do is test before, if you haven't already, to make sure that we're gonna get light. Because I don't wanna have to waste a connector like this. So I'm gonna go ahead and put this right here, let it hang. Hopefully, when I flip the switch, we get some light, which we do, so everything's working properly. So now, I'm gonna go ahead and heat up our connectors. I'm using a heat gun, but if you don't have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer or something. It'll just take a little bit longer and you can see as I start to heat these up, it's gonna hug that wire. And if you do it right and heat it up all the way, it'll make a nice little seal. It should be nice and watertight. And that's just always good especially if these wires are gonna end up in the wall. Sometimes, these trailers leak and it's always nice just to make a good connection that's gonna prevent any weird things from happening. So this will keep the water out and it'll also keep the wires nice and tight on the inside. So once we do that, what we can do is start to run our wires back in. I have a lot of excess wire just because we've been installing a lot of lights. So once all that's put back in there, we can kinda position it to where we want and then screw into place. To access the mounting holes, what we're gonna need to do is take these screws out. So take a power tool or just a hand screwdriver and take the lens off. Like that, set this aside so we don't lose it. It's a tiny little machine screw. And then we can remove this lens and set it aside for now. We can get a good look at what's underneath there. So you can either mount it all four sides or just on the two here. And the mounting hardware is not included, so you're gonna have to grab some too. You can go ahead and kinda line this up to where we want it. I'm just using little self-tapping screws and the way it sits up against the wall, it kinda recesses in a little bit. So we don't wanna screw it all the way in yet. And then we do want to go ahead and do the opposite side and we'll come down and tighten all these up at the very end. We don't wanna over-tighten it and bend this bracket. So maybe just get nice and loose there until we get all of them in place. We ran to a little bit of an issue. The hardware that I picked isn't gonna allow this lens to sit up on there. So it does matter which screws we're using. So what I'm gonna revert to is these. So we want something that's gonna sit nice and flush to the surface unlike the screws that I used. So I'm gonna have to remove those and replace 'em, so we can get our lens on there. Another thing to note, we don't really have a whole cutout that matches up with this, so it's not really gonna be that low profile as this is as close as it's gonna get to the wall. So if you wanna make it nice and flush, what you wanna do is you wanna cut out a 4 inch by inch and a half little piece wherever you're mounting it, so it'll sit there nice and flush. If you don't plan on mounting it completely flush, there's a couple of things we can do. If we wanted a little bit of angle to get the light to kinda go towards the floor, you can kinda go like this if you want to. It's kinda cool that we have that option. I'm just gonna do the flat mount today, so I'm gonna back these out a little bit. And just make sure it's nice and flush just like that. And then, we can go ahead and take our lens, and now with our flush screws, we can go ahead and secure our lens in place. And you can definitely do that with a hand tool. I just had this in my hand, so I'm using this. But if you are gonna use a power tool, you do not need to tighten it down that much. Just nice and snug 'cause we don't wanna crack our lens. And now that, that's all done, triple check to make sure it works again. And it does and we are good to go. And that'll do it for a look at the Optronics LED trailer light..

  • Recommended Interior Light and Switch for Snowmobile Trailer
I recommend using the # ILL35CB, which can be mounted on the ceiling and are small enough at 5" long x 2" wide that mounting shouldn't be an issue with a roof that has a slight pitch/curve and require 4 screws to mount. I think the ceiling mounted lights provide you with a bit better overall illumination which is why I would prefer them to the # ILL72CB you were looking at, which would need to be mounted on the walls most likely.
