If you've ever gotten your RV from storage and found it with a dead battery, this Optimate solar system is a perfect solution. It provides an easy way to charge your RV batteries and keep them in good working order with clean, renewable power. Using the 40-watt solar panel, this system collects solar energy to create DC power that passes through a solar charge controller and into your battery. The kit includes adapters to suit your charging application.

When your RV is parked, position the panel where it can receive direct sunlight and leave it plugged in. The solar controller will monitor the battery, maintaining it and preventing it from being overcharged. This is also a great choice for maintaining the battery in your motorcycle, ATV, golf cart, or other big toy. Simply mount the panel to the roof or wall of your garage and run the cables inside.

Polycrystalline Solar Panel

The charging process starts with the solar panel, which mounts permanently with screws or other mounting hardware (sold separately). When solar energy interacts with the silicon cells in the panel, it generates a flow of DC electrical current that charges your battery. And in optimal sunlight conditions, the panel produces 40 watts per hour.

Smart Solar Controller Charges and Protects Battery

The solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by the solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses pulse width modulation technology to regulate the output through pulses that provide a consistent charge. Typically, PWM controllers are a good fit for smaller systems with lower voltages compared to more expensive MPPT solar controllers.

Using a multistage charging system, the controller automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes preset charging profiles for sealed/gel, AGM, and flooded/wet cell lead acid batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Save: When battery save mode is in progress, the solar charge controller is detecting a battery lower than 12V. It can save a battery discharged as low as 4V.
  2. Charge & Optimize: In this mode, the controller will be actively charging the battery. The battery is optimized by continuing charging for at least 10 more minutes.
  3. Maintain: The battery will be maintained in this mode as the charger delivers a holding voltage between 13.3V and 13.6V.

LED indicators provide information on the current solar panel output. The lights will tell you if the panel is providing a charge, if the battery is deeply discharged and in save mode, if the battery is moderately charged and in charge & optimize mode, and when the battery is fully charged and being maintained. It automatically detects battery type and chooses the appropriate charging profile.

Easy-to-Use Adapters for Battery Connection

Optimate cables for attaching panel to battery

This kit includes two cables for temporary or permanent attachment to your battery. The SAE plugs connect to the charge controller and attach to your battery using ring terminals or alligator clips. The ring terminals are good for creating a port on your motorcycle, ATV, golf cart, or RV so you can park it and quickly attach the solar panel with zero fuss. The alligator clips are a good option if your battery is easily accessible and you only occasionally plan to hook up the solar panel.

Video Transcript for OptiMate Solar Duo Roof Mount Solar Charging System with Controller Review

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we gonna take a look at the OptiMate 40 Watt Solar Dual Charging System, with the controller. Now this is a permanent mount solar charging system that'll let you place the solar panel where you need it for maximum sunlight. It is a permanent mount design solar power system. So it does provide a nice off-grid charging solution for lead-acid and lithium batteries. And you install this solar panel using these included corner mounting brackets that are on the panel.

Now the hardware to install, these are not included you would have to supply that. But the kit does include everything shown here on the table. The 40 watt solar panel, if I turn it around you can see it has an eight inch long built in solar cable. Now the controller that's included, right here. This is a solar dual controller, has an SAE connector.

Also has the battery clamp cables, the ring terminal cables, and a nice owner's manual. Now the battery types that are supported by this are flooded, AGM, gel, and the LiFePO4, which is the lithium-iron phosphate batteries. The panel itself is a 40W Polycrystalline Solar Panel, does use the sunlight to charge your vehicles batteries, and this panel does have an IP54 rating. It is made from weatherproof materials to stand up to the elements. And I wanna zoom in and show you the other parts here.

This solar controller, this is what'll allow you to adjust the solar panel output for a quick consistent charge. Offers an automatic multi-stage smart charging system to help extend the battery life. And it uses an led display that'll provide the charge progress and monitor the charge level throughout the night. Just wanted to show you if we plugged this in, I think it will probably show you there's some charge in that panel. Yeah, you can see the red light that pops on there that show you that it is giving out a charge, and then there's lights over here that'll show you the car charge progress and monitors the charge level.

The cord on this that connects to the battery is gonna be about 40 inches long, and they give you two different options to connect it to your battery. You can use the 20 inch long battery clamp cables. You'll just plug this into the connector here. And then you have your standard battery clamps that will connect to your positive and negative on your battery. If you want a more permanent connection, they do offer this 20 inch long ring terminal cables. You can see they have the islets on there to connect to the battery. It's positive and negative, and then same way you just pull the cap, plug this in and you're all ready to go. So a couple of different options to connect it to your battery. And it comes with this nice owner's manual that'll describe how this connects and how it operates. Now it does use a dual method, smart charging system that'll help efficiently charge the battery in any weather, provides a nice continuous charge in full sun, and will even give you a pulse charge in low light. It will even save your dead battery from as low as four volts. Again, the application for this is 12 volt or 12.8 volt batteries, from two to 240 amp hours. Solar panel voltage is 12 volts. The solar panel rated power is 40 Watts. And then the last thing I wanna do is just give you a few dimensions on the solar panel itself. And I am gonna measure including these corner brackets cause they do stick out some. So if we do the width on the corner brackets, right at 27 inches long. The width again, the widest point, that'd be where the brackets are 16 and five eighths inches wide. And the depth of it is only about one and a quarter inches. But that should do it for the review on the OptiMate 40 Watt Solar Dual Charging System, with the controller..

Got the 20 watt panel to maintain the dual batteries in my motorhome.
So far, so good. Great build quality. We'll see how it does in winter.

by:

It's a great solar charger. The only downside is that it doesn't indicate the charging level. I have it hooked up to my four wheeler in a remote area to keep the battery charged. It would be a five rating if there was some way to tell if the battery was fully charged when using the charger.

by:

Great service, speedy delivery and fine products.

by:

Product exactly what was advertised and easy to install.
