Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?
Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.
The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.
If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.
Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.
How Many Steps Do You Need?
To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.
The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.
This page's step assembly is in bold text.
Entry Height | 18-1/4" Mounting Bracket Width | 24" Mounting Bracket Width |
---|---|---|
18" - 23" | AS02, SS02 | Not available |
24" - 30" | AS03, SS03 | AS23 |
31" - 40" | AS04, SS04 | AS24 |
40" - 48" | AS05 | AS25 |
How Do You Install the Steps?
To install the steps:
-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway
-Secure in place with included lag screws

What I like:
1) It's compact for easy storage when not needed.
2) It's well built and firmly attaches to my tailgate.
3) It works great for steps to our truck camping tent, see attached photos.
What I don't like:
1) The 6" gap between the top step and the tailgate. I've filled it in with a block of wood but eventually like to replace that with a bent aluminum plate.
Good fit strong and sturdy, maybe consider a wider top step to close up the gap and create a safer first step down.
We ordered the Brophy camper Sissor steps for our truck camper. We could have gone the inexpensive "household step ladder" route but we wanted something sturdy and secure. We are so glad we got this outstanding, quality product. They are secure, safe, look nice and are totally worth it. No rickety steps for us!
Absolutely the best customer service and information available. The product is the best quality and reasonable price. I paid twice as much my last ladder purchase. Needless to say we will be frequenting this business.
Very nice sturdy light weight steps. Upgraded from the 3 to 4 step version.
Everything is good except the pin for the step lock tab was laying in the bottom of the box and will not stay installed where it goes, poor design.
works great for the campers in a lifted truck.
Looks very sturdy, well made Thanks
I had a Brophy 4-step, steel scissor step for my last truck camper, and it worked great. I thought I would spend a little extra for the much lighter aluminum version for my new camper. I already like it a lot. It is solid and of superior workmanship. I would definitely recommend them.
Great steps. Sturdy and getting in and out of our slide in Four Wheel Camper is so much easier and safer.
Light weight, perfect height, used with the TSSB tailgate bracket. Works great for my application.
Very fast delivery and was as advertised I have waited awhile to make this investment and I can after install say nice can’t wait to use them out in the outdoors
Excellent quality, light weight. Perfect for pop-up truck campers.
This set of four steps is very sturdy. My old set lasted about five years when an outside support broke where a rivet was. I removed that step and the rest lasted 18 years. My camper is taller due to a new taller pickup, so I needed this set of four steps, which should last even longer.
Happy with the step but the bracket it hangs on rusted immediately
Stable and very well built

Great, no issues at all.
The Brophy Aluminum Four Step Scissors steps appear to be an excellent product and installed easily. I like the mounting bracket - the bracket provides for easy attachment and removal as well as slight sliding of the steps to either side. The steps provide secure footing even when wet. And they are relatively light weight and compact when retracted and detached prior to movement. The watch outs are:
1. The lower, forward edge of each step could cause cuts.
2. The metal strap used to secure the steps in the collapsed/storage position also posed a potential cut issue when installed on my Lance 1050s. The uppermost step rests on my Lance's bumper. The strap must be rotated up parallel to the uppermost step. The edge of the strap then protrudes slightly above the back edge of the uppermost step. We removed the strap and I will bevel the lower forward edge of the steps.
All that said, a good product that I highly recommend. I wish I had bought them two years ago when we got the camper. Our camper spends most of its time mounted on the truck, and the climb up is a nuisance. These steps make entry and exit a snap.
Of course etrailer's service is outstanding. I received my order quickly - the third business day after placing my order. I have ordered three large items from etTrailer and have received all three expeditiously and without damage/incident. These guys are pro's.

Ordered stairs on Monday and had them Wednesday morning (3 day shipping).
Stair installation was easy and took an hour (including gathering and putting away tools). I can't speak to using them long term but they seem really solid and are easy to operate. This is definitely a great upgrade for our truck camper.

1 year later and the steps are working great theyre solid. Theyre easy to unfold, easy to get on and off bracket and store easily. I couldnt imagine not having them.
We love it
Makes it easier to get in and out of our pop up camper
These scissor steps are light and very sturdy, exactly what we were looking for. They also fold up quite easily into a compact unit. We are actually going to use these to get in and out of the back of our F150, and we didn't want a steep ladder type of set up. It's not a camper and so will not be permanently installing the bracket, so we may attach the bracket to a 2x4 just to make sure there is no sliding of the unit while in use. It's a great product!
EXCELLENT. . . ..
WILL BUY AND PREFER TO FRIENDS
THANK YOU
We are getting older and found it hard to climb into our camper using a folding stool. These steps are lightweight and simple to use. Getting in and out of the camper is no longer a challenge. The mounting instructions were easy to follow. Although I did add a strip of butyl tape under the bracket to seal the holes from moister.
Perfect for our needs, very easy to set up and solid to climb, fits perfect under our camper door.

The four-step scissors set is excellent. However, the rivets are so tight my wife cant unfold nor close the steps. Otherwise Im very pleased with the set.
