The Semi 4.0 lets you carry 2 bikes on the back of your vehicle. It has padded, ratcheting hooks and long wheel cradles with sliding, ratcheting straps so you can carry 2 bikes regardless of size, frame design, or suspension or brake style. A bail pin at the base lets you fold the rack up for storage, and its low loading height reduces the strain of mounting your bikes for transport. It also has a locking system that secures your bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle.
The pivoting upright arms have ratcheting hooks that grab your bikes firmly by the front wheels - not the frames. These hooks allow you to rapidly load and unload your bikes, and they won't scratch or scuff your bike paint. Each arm has an integrated cable lock that secures the bikes to the rack.
You can fold down the upright arms when no bikes are on the rack for convenient access to your vehicle's rear cargo area.
The extra-long rear cradles accommodate most bike lengths. Simply slide each strap to where the wheel meets the cradle then ratchet them tight to secure the bikes rear wheels to the rack. Each strap has an integrated chock that prevents the rear wheel from rotating while on the rack.
When you're not carrying bikes you can use the bail pin to fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle.
Integrated locking cables inside the pivoting arms secure your bikes to the rack.
The locking, threaded hitch pin secures the rack to your hitch receiver and also serves as an anti-wobble device to eliminate rattling in the receiver.

Had some paint damage due to crappy box. A little touch up paint and I was good to go.
Jenny N - 02/25/2022We very much like the Swagman Semi 4.0 2-bike Platform Rack. The rack is sturdy, and installing and removing our bikes from the rack is quick and easy. Bikes are held firmly in place with the hooks going over the front tires. (We did try a different Swagman platform rack in which the hooks catch the center of the top bar of the bikes. That rack did not work with my wife's bike because the top bar was too low.) I never much liked the bicycle racks that hang the bikes from the cross bar: you have to tie the bikes carefully so they don't hit each other or the car. Because this rack is easy to use, we will be using it a lot more often than the former rack we had -- so even though the rack is more expensive, it will be cheaper on a cost per use basis! The rack can be folded in the upright position, which is useful if you have a short garage and don't want to remove it from the car when parked inside without bikes. Alternatively, you can drive with it in the upright position if you plan to use the rack to transport bikes in the near future. A feature I would like the rack to have (but it doesn't) would be the ability to swing down to provide access to the back of our SUV while loaded with bikes. That's why I'm giving it a rating of 4 stars rather than 5. However, for us, at least, a little planning ahead makes that a non-issue.
Great Bike rack. Have not used it except to try the bikes on it. The bike go on fast and secure. I am sure it will work great for me. Has build in Locks to keep your bikes safe.
One note on assembly. The directions say to mount the bike support assembly so that they are opposite the car, but the diagram and pictures show it the other way. Mount them opposite the car or it will not fold up. The picture is wrong. That did take another 5 min. to switch.
eTrailer shipped it out very fast. I live close to the warehouse, and received it in less than 24 hours. I would not expect something that fast from anybody, but I guess it was the stars where just tight

Due to the additional stresses exerted on hitch mounted accessories bike racks that are motorhome approved are designed differently. Bike rack failure may be an issue if the bike rack is not approved for use on the back on an motorhome. I have included a link to motorhome approved bike racks.

This is a one great product that does not cost arm and leg but very good quality. It is very sturdy. On the first use I kept looking back since my previous rack is so wobbly that I am afraid my bikes will fall off whenever there are bumps on the road. Using this rack, the bikes barely moved through turns and bumps. I finally can just concentrate on the road in front of me and stop checking back.
I have used the rack to carry 2 adult bikes or 4 bikes (3 adult + 1 youth bikes). Same result, very sturdy and so easy to use. Even my 10 year old can set her own bike to the rack. I hope the quality will stand for years to come.
First I consider Hollywood Racks Sport. Glad I called eTrailer before placing an order. Turned out the type of mount on Hollywood Racks Sport is not an ideal mount type for mountain bikes. Instead of mount on the frame, for mountain bikes it should be mounted on the wheel so it won't affect the suspension of the bikes when there are bumps on the road.
FYI .. I checked around before deciding on this rack. For the platform rack that can handle 4 bikes and with the quality like this, it can cost between $700-1,000+ depending brands. Finding this Swagman around $500s is an easy call for me, plus free shipping promo from eTrailer!!

Solid rack, it's the same concept as the much more expensive, Thule, Yakima and Kuat but you get to save a few hundred bucks.
Pro's: great design with no frame contact, holds bikes tightly. Carries 2-4 bikes neatly, super easy to load, my 6 & 8 yr olds load their own bikes. It's shorter than the other racks mentioned above. Any rack of this style is going to be substantial but this one is the shortest.
Con's: no tilt away feature, not a deal breaker but an inconvenience. I was told that they didn't do the tilt away feature on the 4 bike rack bc the rack would touch the ground. My thought, i could care less, it's a bike rack and it is probably going to get scratched driving to the trail head anyway. the pin system is pretty primitive. they should have some sort of one hand spring locking mechanism to release the rack from vertical to horizontal positions. the pin works, but you need to hands on it.
All around good rack for around $$, you need to be aware of going in and out of parking lots, or driveways that change to a steep incline quickly because these are longer racks that stick out about 5' from the back of your car, and if you have a mini van or lower ground clearance vehicle the rack could scrape the road.

I have used this rack for about a year and generally it is excellent. However, I did have an issue with it when the hitch bolt became seized up in the receiver and I had to take my vehicle to a welding shop so they could drill-out the retaining bolt. I know use a hitch silencer and locking hitch pin, and not the threaded bolt. I am not sure if this issue could happen on any rack, so it isn't my intent to single out this manufacturer. I have had good customer service from them from some other issues I had with this rack when new, so no complaints from me. I had heard that the threaded hitch bolts were generally problematic from the welder who cut mine off, so it's definatrely not unique to this brand.

After mistakenly ordering the wrong bike rack (Aero Wing) to transport our carbon fiber bikes we contacted ETrailer customer support and they quickly helped us identify a front wheel mount rack that would transport up to 4 carbon fiber bikes. The ETrailer rep suggested this Swagman Rack as it was within our budget range. I initially was a bit concerned when I noticed the price for the Swagman rack was significantly less that the other 4 bike racks. However, much to my delight the ETrailer service rep recommendation was spot on. It only took about 15 minutes to build both the main 2 bike rack and the additional 2 bike add-on racks. Once we had the rack built we found mounting and security the rack to the trailer extremely easy (however this is a solid rack so it is a bit heavy by design). Mounting and securing the bikes was as easy as they show in the ETrailer video. We have both a Large and X-Large 29" carbon fiber mounting bikes and the rack and the add-on fits all 4 bikes without issue. It should also be noted that during the assembly of the rack my son overtightened one of the frame securing nuts and snapped the bolt. Unlike some of the other bike racks I had in the past the bolts used in the assembly of the frame are common bolts that can be found at your local Lowes or Home Depot. So, if you are looking for a good affordable 4 bike rack to transport carbon fiber bikes I highly suggest considering the Swagman Semi 4.0.

The Swagman Semi 4.0 seems sturdy, almost heavy. I finally have it mounted on my '13 Toyota FJ and all clearances are good. I found the directions were poorly written and depicted, the two primary pieces of the assembly were very difficult to marry together and last but not least, there were multiple pieces of nuts and washers missing, which necessitated a trip to the hardware store.
Although not the start I was looking for, I hope now that the unit is assembled, it will provide many years of service.

I had a very good experience with this rack. Assembly and installation were fast and easy. No surprises. The rack appears to be of the highest quality, and my experience for its first use was very positive. That said, I have two warnings: 1) the rack DOES NOT tilt away from the car to allow access to the gate or rear of the vehicle like many of its competitors do. 2) If you have limited room surrounding your hitch, (like on my 2016 Explorer) then the locking mechanism can be a lot of trouble to use.

Our bike rack came in much faster than I had anticipated.
I was amazed at the engineering that went into it. There was only one correct way to put it together which was a blessing for a nerd like me. The total time for the job was about an hour.
I've used it a few times now. It is easy to install and remove from our Volkswagen Tiguan and it holds our two bikes securely.
One suggestion - you might want to include the tools that are required for putting it together in your video. I had them but others might not.

Sturdy, well built, hardy components. I assembled everything in about an hour. The features I most liked about this model was the tightening mechanism inside the hitch receiver to stop sway, as well as the tire braces ( vice frame brace), & the internal cable lock system for each individual bike. Have not driven with 4 bikes yet, but will follow up if I see issues. I’m a big Thule fan, but this was Way cheaper than theIt 4 bike platform rack.
