Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?
Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.
The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.
If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.
Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.
How Many Steps Do You Need?
To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.
The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.
This page's step assembly is in bold text.
Entry Height | 18-1/4" Mounting Bracket Width | 24" Mounting Bracket Width |
---|---|---|
18" - 23" | AS02, SS02 | Not available |
24" - 30" | AS03, SS03 | AS23 |
31" - 40" | AS04, SS04 | AS24 |

How Do You Install the Steps?
To install the steps:
-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway
-Secure in place with included lag screws

Mounting bracket and hardware included.Love our Brophy camper steps. Installed the mounting bracket to the underside of our rear "deck" that hangs off the end of our camper and tailgate. Steps are a little heavy for my wife to handle and install so I always do it. I added reflective grip tape to the steps for traction and they illuminate at night with glow in the dark lines so you can see the steps for going up and down in the dark. Very pleased with purchase, etrailer always has the best stuff and best prices. Thanks etrailer.
The steps are a direct replacement for what I currently have so that's fine. What I was really disappointed with was with how the packaged arrived, it looked like it had been dropped from a 2 story building then put back in the torn up box and taped together with 2 rolls of packing tape. My camper is currently not on my truck so I don't know if the steps will even work or if they are damaged in any way. I am not going to go through the process of loading the camper on the truck just to see if the steps are damaged so I am hoping all is OK, won't find out until my next camping trip. See attached pictures.

I just completed the install on my Lance camper.
The install took 10 minutes.
I am very pleased with these steel steps.
I'm a big guy, 270 lbs.
They are super strong, and easy to setup.
Shipping took three days.
Very happy. I placed my order on November 19th, which was a Sunday, around 1pm. I received my order 3 days later on Nov 22nd. The product seems very well made. The website is easy to navigate, descriptions are accurate and the instructions on how to measure are spot on. I will definitely order from Etrailer in the future.
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! I own a tri-level home and when needing to repair or upgrade light fixtures or most things involving the ceiling I have found that it is much easier to go above and work from the top which means the attic. Because of the third level of the house, my attic also has another level to reach it and it doesn't have stairs to get up to it resulting in having to use a chair or step ladder which I found to be very unsteady (and scary). Similar products like this cost upwards of $500 and they were fixed sets meaning that they didn't fold or contract for space saving. This is perfect for what I needed. As you can see in the photos I have it mounted on the wall and collapsed when not in use. When needed it is very easy to just grab the bottom rail and pull it down to expand the steps and push it back up when done. THANK YOU eTrailer!
Super easy to install, very sturdy. Installed this on rear of our 2005 Palomino Maverick 1000 truck camper. Makes entry very easy. The camper did not come with steps so this was a great way to get inside the camper. I added an eyebolt to the back of the camper to attach the step to the camper with a chain to keep honest people honest. The only drawback is the weight, not excessive but the aluminum ones might be easier to manipulate. Great product, would eagerly advise someone to buy this unit.
I installed steel 4 step scissor steps on my popup truck camper. The
camper door would not clear the steps. I needed to mount the steps
lower. A couple pieces of slotted angle iron did the trick. See
attached photos.
P.S. You could even use the slotted angle to lock the steps in case
you thought someone might want to "borrow" them.
It is sturdy and installed easily. I did have to cut notches out of the door for the bracket hooks but that was not a big deal.
First let me say thank you to the folks at etrailer, quality products, good prices, great shipping and great all around customer service. I have purchased a few products from this company before and haven't been disappointed yet. Kudos to Kyle and so many others for taking the time to help with all my questions and getting me in the right direction for my specific applications.
I just purchased the brophy steel 4 step setup for my tundra with northstar's sc650 on the back. Great fit, easy install, using them the same day we put them on the rig. I added nonslip grip tape to each step along with a little reflective tape on the face of each step for low light inclement weather use.
A little heavier of course than aluminum would have been but these are absolutely fine and the paint and finish are great.
I would recommend them to anyone without reservation.

We are actually using them right now on our Northstar SC 650 truck camper up in the mountains of SC. They are rock solid steps. A little heavy compared to the aluminum version but have been dependable non the less. We like them. We did apply 2 strips of 1 inch grip tape per step for a sure footing. We also applied reflective glow strips on the step faces for easy spotting at night. No complaints whatsoever.
Seem strong and the install was easy. I offset my installation to clear the centre tube of my motorcycle rack and it's not even noticeable with the wide tread widths.
Easy install, solid built, easy to mount the steps, easy to remove and stow. Great product. Keep up the good work!
Good solid steps, wish the mounting system was a little better secured but overall very satisfied! etrailer like always had them at my front door within days, I always buy from etrailer when possible.
It is so simple to set up and is very sturdy construction. Works great on my truck camper.
Steps are a little stiff to pull down, but very sturdy and easy to install. Have used them for a year and all works well and still rust free,
Excellent, with mild reservations noted below. Only hitch to the install was trying to keep out of the old screw holes from the previous steps (which came with the TC and were an aluminum three-step that needed an orange crate for the fourth - no more orange crate now). The steel steps feel better under my weight and are solid and haven't sand in the joints yet so they don't squeak.
Reasonably priced; arrived on time. Lady I spoke with on the phone knew about the 4-screw/5-screw differences and didn't have to pass me off to a techie. Overall I feel much more confident now ordering online these big-ticket items from eTrailer.com.
My two very minor issues are more with Brophy. Having to remove the steps when traveling and reattach them every time I want to get into the TC is a bit of a nuisance, especially as they are heavy and I'm an old guy rapidly losing muscle mass. But can a pilgrim that had to unlimber an orange crate every time he extended his old steps really complain? Camped for days is no problemo. They are a little too heavy to pull up from inside for stealth camping.
The other issue is theft prevention, as any drive-by can just lift the steps off and drive away with them (then order a mounting bracket from eTrailer.com); not an urgent concern, but in a crowded campground we get all types. So, I've ordered a 4-foot cable lock to secure the steps to the bumper whenever I'm feeing really paranoid or I'm visiting my brother-in-law.
Now if I never fall off the steps or, if I do, my grab bar prevents a serious splat!, then I shall be (sorry for this...) a happy camper.

The steps are doing well. Have the mountunmount routine mastered so it does not take noticeably longer than for Class C steps. Arthritis sometimes makes the lifts more uncomfortable. Placed reflective tape on the sides. The part that rests on the ground has been rusting slightly and requires occasional care. On hot days when wearing shorts, one must take care when stepping down to keep the back of the calves from touching the metal steps as they get very, very hot dismounting hot steps is best done with gloves. Otherwisethey have been as serviceable as one could hope.Best regards
just what I needed to get in and out of my truck camper. Well made and will last me for years to come. Shipping was very fast too.
Solid setup easy to install.
Easy installation, very stable, much better than factory step. Have always had good experience with etrailer products.
Bought these kind of as a last minute thing. My wife and I aren't as young and nimble as we used to be and tired of using unstable wooden folding steps, so I figured what the heck, let's give these Brophy steps a try. Wow.....should have bought these years ago when we first started truck camping !
If there was any downside to them, it would be the weight. But then again, I think that's what makes them so stable. My advice to anyone on the fence about weather to spend their hard earned money for a set of these, I'd say "Do It", you won't be disappointed !

Well its been over a year since we purchased these Brophy steps, and I gotta tell ya, they are one purchase you will never be disappointed with. Forget reading all the reviews and just go buy yourself a set ! then youll understand why everyone raves about them
Worked as good as it gets.
Great stairs!
Feel very solid and the installation was very easy.
I am using these stairs in my gooseneck horse trailer to be able to climb up to the bed part - and they are a fantastic alternative to hauling around a stepladder. Easy to attach the mounting bar, the folded down stairs can be stashed away in a trailer compartment until I need them come bedtime, and they are easy to hang and unfold and now this 60 year old lady can climb up and down with ease! So glad I found the answer to my problem with etrailers!! As far as I was concerned, the weight was negligible between the aluminum and these steel ones, but for the price. However, I used a silicone lubricant on all the joints to help with pulling them apart and that seemed to really make it easier for me to unfold and fold back up. I leave them hanging for the whole 3 day SHow and then stash them away again for the ride home.
I had to mount the steps to the truck bumper because the camper mounting bracket lag bolts started to pull out. I drilled a hole in the steps top crossmember and the top of the truck bumper. I threaded a bolt through the truck bumper and secured it with a nut. I then added a wing nut that secures the steps to the bumper. It feels much more secure this way and it works great. Goes on and off by removing the wing nut. It works for me because my camper does not extend beyond the bumper. Great steps. Very stable and steady.glad I purchased them.
Just what we needed. We are using these as a means to gain entry to the cab of a semi tractor. My wife has trouble getting in the truck but these make it a breeze. The reason I gave it a four is because the mounting bracket was bent. The service through etrailer was great Thank you.
