Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

SolidStep Door Flanges

The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.

SolidStep Door Flanges

Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 25" wide to 28-7/8" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

To make sure your doors will close when the steps are installed, measure from the top of the threshold plate to the bottom of the door. You will need a gap of about 1/4" to 3/8" to allow the door to close over the step's mounting plate.

The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

SolidStep Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays doorway width measurements in the first column. If you determined you have an entry height between 22" and 28", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the second column. If you determined your entry height is between 27" and 36", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the third column. If you determined your entry height is between 35" and 44", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the fourth column. Choose the doorway width that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
  3. Extend until feet touch the ground
  4. Center the steps in the doorframe
  5. Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
  6. Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor

-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten

  7. Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages

-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust

  8. Tighten the latching arm bolts and the floor fasteners

Positives: This was a simple installation. The hardest part was removing the old steps-took 2 of us (and a few grunts!). I filed off the inner lip on the threshold and removed the transition strip to make things as level as possible prior to installation. It took about 3/4 hour to finish install after that. Great product, (first in-field use will be Thursday 10/8/20).
Negatives: The shipping carton was trashed and loose parts were strewn throughout. I didn't receive the 4" #10 machine screws, washers, and lock nuts, so I used the wood screws but I'm pretty sure I'll need to through bolt the assembly to the trailer in the future. LCI - replacements please? Also, ordered clevis pins with bimini rings for easier support strut length adjustment.
Overall: Very Positive Upgrade-Easy & Useful. I would recommend to anyone who wants a better steps than the OEM.

Comments
One year later and we’re very pleased with our purchase. Absolutely no problems and they provide a sturdier platform to get into our trailer. No complaints. We would purchase again.

We have ordered several times from etrailer.com and have never had a problem. And, we love the steps!

by: 04/25/2021

Watched installation video prior to installing steps & that made the process much easier. I had enough threshold clearance on both the screen & outside doors so steps fit very well on my 2016 Imagine by Grand Design camper.

Comments
Best steps ever. Fit my 2017 Imagine by Grand Design camper perfectly without having to modify the screen door. Easy 2 person installation and adjusts easily for uneven ground. Very solid and nice having larger 1st step.

by:

Easy installation and a great product. I used the backer plate and thru bolts for mounting instead of screws. The only issue I had was that the locking pins for the leg extensions were not easy to remove. I replaced them a standard pins with retaining clips.

Comments
No issues with the steps at all. I always check to see if the site allows the steps to lower completely so as to not interfere with the door closing.

We're about to begin our second season of camping with these steps and overall, we love them. They are strong, stable, easy to raise and lower and they were super simple to install. There have been a few times where we wished for the old fashioned fold-out steps, and we've decided against putting in a second set in our second doorway. If we had a camper with only one door, I would probably not choose these. Overall, we love them and would buy them again.

by:

Great steps. We have a 34 foot Montana and got the 3 step model, I think they recommended the 4 step model but these are lighter to lift and shorter in the doorway. The egress and ingress might be a little steeper but we are very happy. Easy to install the screen door had to be adjusted a little bit to shut properly. Very good quality, I would do this again. They came fast and the customer service was not needed so I cant speak to that.

Comments
Very Good product. No issues after a year of use. Would buy again.

I really appreciate the fast delivery of my steps for the RV. It’s a little cool tonight. So I’ll wait a few days to install them.

by:

The box came beaten up! My husband is installing the stairs on our camper as I write this. It’s obvious these stairs have been mounted, taken off and then returned. There is an adjusting pin missing. I’ve posted pictures of the box and the stairs. For the money spent it’s very disappointing to receive a used item.

by:

These stairs are a great replacement for the factory installed stairs. We do like having the larger top stair for stability. It’s nice that the camper doesn’t rock when someone is using the stairs since they’re stabilized by the ground. My only complaint is having to clean them well before packing up to leave campsite since they fold into camper. Make sure to install them while camper is on level ground.

I have a 2013 Forest River Wildcat 5th wheel RV that I installed the Lippert tri solid steps on. They are the 26” because my doorway is only 25 1/4” at the widest place. Takes longer to unbox than to install as I did remove the old steps. They fitted perfectly. Really solid. Now the RV does not shake with entering and exiting.

by:

I ordered Sunday evening and installed the Lippert Solid Step in Florida Wensday morning. Fits, works and looks pretty darn good. I would like to thank Lori for her fantastic customer service and follow through my sale.

by:

Product arrived earlier than expected and was in perfect condition with all parts included. It was very easy to install myself thanks to the video from etrailer! I am very happy with my purchase!

by:

I ordered the steps and lift assist together and
than arrived at the same time. not all my orders arrive tougher.
I watch the instruction videos a few times and read the enclosed instructions a few times before starting.
two hours later all was installed and working fine.
I did the installation by myself. at 73 I am a little slow but no problems.
I did have to drill one hole at a little angle to get beside original step bracket.

by:

Great Steps. Great Price. Kept me informed on status of order. Bought the steps twice to have one on each door

by:

We love the steps, we did have to do some adjustments to 2000 fifth wheel threshold and storm door, but it works great. Very secure

by:

Love this product. The 13 inch top step is excellent for my wife who has knee and hip issues and I like it too. Good price and delivered on time. The first order from etrailer was for boat trailer spring kit and again good product, good price, delivered as scheduled. I will order again from etrailer when needed.

These steps are great! I had to order a new set of steps due to damage during a camping trip. etrailer sent it, UPS managed to destroy it up before it was delivered. Back went the UPS damaged unit. A whole new unit was quickly sent to replace that one. And UPS managed to mangle the box of the replacement. The contents were fine though. Thanks etrailer for great customer service even though it was UPS's fault.

by:

Great product and easy to install thanks to the etrailer installation videos. Once again etrailer delivered! They are all awesome!!!!

by:

The steps themselves are phenomenal. They are very sturdy and they were a breeze to install. Would have rated them a 5 but when I received my order the box was torn and had several large holes in it, one of the bases on the legs were bent, but I was able to straighten it out with a hammer and half the nuts and bolts were missing. Luckily a hardware store was close so I was able to purchase new bolts, washers and screws. They only took about 45 minutes to install once I got all the hardware. I would definitely recommend these steps of you are looking to upgrade your old steps.

Received these last week it took me about an hour to install the unit it is solid to walk on , my wife and mother in law love them. Would recommend this to any one who has an older rv needing solid steps to go up and down.

by:

Nice steps but difficult to get the top of the stairs to lay down completely so you can shut the door without slamming it. I installed it per the instructions but had to mess with it to lay correctly. It’s the correct size for my trailer based on the selection criteria. They do work great.

Comments
It does sound like the threshold plate of the steps may not be firmly pressed against the threshold. I recommend to make sure the step threshold plate is placed firmly against the outside of the door threshold. If not positioned flush against the outside of the door threshold, the step assembly could prevent the door from closing. Please let me know if this doesnt solve your issue and I can troubleshoot further.
-- Etrailer Expert Heather A - 03/15/2022

by:

Stairs were installed in a 2018 Forest River Work & Play. The original 2-step stairs caused issues with my knees due to the excessive riser height. The new stairs riser height is 8 inches. Installation of the stairs itself was quick and easy with my wife assisting while I drilled the mounting holes in the floor. Installation took less than 30 minutes.

One issue that I encountered was that the screen door was scraping along the sheetmetal threshold of the SolidStep, preventing the RV door from closing while the steps were in the down position. The fix was that I cut approx 1/4 inch of the vertical rails of the screen door and re-assembled the screen door. Door closes without binding now.

by:

Great product, easy installation. Makes life a lot easier.

by:

The Lippert steps installed on my trailer made getting in and out much easier. The steps are more rigid have more weight handling capacity than the original fold out steps. Very good addition to the trailer.

The SolidStep part # LC791572 could be used on a pop up trailer but you will need vertical clearance for the setup to store. It would take some time to install and reinstall the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps for 25" to 28-7/8" RV Door Frames - Triple - Aluminum # LC791572. If it's something you do just at the beginning and end of every season then that is definitely doable. I have added a link below to a video install of the SolidStep # LC791572 so you can see how it is done.
