Hi, everyone, Aidan here at etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at this Curt Roof-Mounted Cargo Basket and seeing how it fits on our 2022 Toyota RAV4. This is going to be the larger version of Curt's roof-mounted basket. They make one that's a little bit more square, but shorter, but this one has the extension piece in the middle. And the reason for that today is because the roof rack that fits on this particular RAV4 has a really wide crossbar spread, which is gonna make it hard to attach baskets, because a lot of them are meant for a more narrow crossbar spread. So you're gonna have to be looking at bigger boxes to accommodate that if you have the same roof rack setup that we have that utilizes these fixed mounting points.
Aside from that though, a roof-mounted basket is a great way to carry extra stuff with you when you're going on your trips, or maybe just keep some things out of your car that you don't want in it. The things I like to bring up is maybe smelly sports equipment, camping gear, things that get dirty. It's a lot easier to keep that mess outside your vehicle rather than putting it in and having to clean out the interior. Roof-mounted carriers are a lot more limited than something like a hitch-mounted carrier, and this one, even though it is a solid steel construction, can only hold up to 150 pounds. Now, bear in mind that that's going to be what the basket can handle, not necessarily the roof rack, and not necessarily your roof of your vehicle.
So check what your RAV4 can handle, check your other components, and always go by the lowest rated component, because the last thing we wanna do is fully load up this basket with stuff, but be overloading our roof and damage the RAV4. Now, even though it's a larger basket, on a relatively mid-sized SUV, this is still going to clear the back hatch with plenty of room to spare. We don't have the basket overhanging the front or the rear of the vehicle by very much, and you can see we've got tons of room in here, so I'm not worried about any sort of vehicle contact, and we don't have to sacrifice any function of our vehicle. Some clearances to keep in mind with the RAV4 specifically, we can look underneath the crossbar at these U-bolts, that's how it clamps around, by tightening up with hand knobs and hold strong to the crossbars. These don't stick down very far, so I'm not worried about any sort of roof contact there, and because they're rubber coated, we're not gonna be scratching up any paint whenever we're getting this set up.
And then pulling back to see how tall it is, we do need to keep in mind the clearances when we're driving around with this. At its tallest point, it does stick up 7 1/4 of an inch from the top of our crossbar, and every roof rack's gonna be a little bit different, so if you do have a different roof rack, just go to your crossbar, measure up 7 1/4 of an inch, and that's how tall this is going to sit on your RAV4. That's really important for looking at things like your garage at home or any other low clearance situations, maybe like a drive through or a parking garage. We also wanna keep in mind our actual usable space. So when you're planning on loading this up, you wanna know what you can fit.
From front to back, it's gonna be 58 3/4 of an inch, and that's from inside rail to inside rail of actual usable space. From side to side, it's gonna be 37 1/4 of an inch. On the front of the basket, you're going to have this removable front fairing, which is a metal construction. Really nice to see, because the plastic does tend to chip over time, especially if rocks hit it, but that's going to reduce our wind noise and drag when we're going down the road, and we can remove it for any sort of elongated loads that we want to pass through the front. Moving into just the general fitment, the one complaint they do have about it is the clamps. You can only set these clamps at set intervals between the bars here, so we don't get the most perfect fit around our crossbars. That's not the end of the world, like I showed you before, it's really tight on there, it's not budging, and once you get those hand knobs tightened down, I said it's tool free and it's secure, but it's just not the most perfect fit. One thing I might compare this to is the Rhino-Rack Roof Basket, that's going to have a track system for its clamps, which can result in a much more custom fit, and I think the basket just looks a little bit better aesthetically. So if you're into the looks of the basket, you're gonna leave it up here full time and you want it to look nice when it's not loaded up with cargo, then that would be my pick, but otherwise, this one will get the job done. And that's really all there is to it. The big thing to consider with your 2022 RAV4 is the crossbar spread. If you've got those flushed rails, your roof rack has fixed mounting points, leaving you with a very few options for accessories, because that crossbar spread is set, you can't move it. So you've gotta pick out an accessory that's gonna work with your roof rack system, and in this case, the Curt does work. We had a lot of trouble finding a roof basket that would fit this setup today, and this one I do think is quite nice. It doesn't overhang the front of the windshield at all, so it's not blocking your vision, it doesn't obstruct the back hatch, and it fills out the width of the roof really nicely, so we're maximizing the space on our roof rack and giving ourselves a good amount of tie-down points and place to add cargo when we're going on our trip. But that'll do it today for our look at the Curt Roof Basket here on our 2022 Toyota RAV4. Thanks for watching.

Free up even more room in your vehicle by packing your gear into this roof-mounted cargo basket. The sturdy steel carrier attaches easily to most factory and aftermarket roof racks. The included fairing reduces wind noise and drag.I love the rack and the extended length is great on my Sequoia. I am disappointed with the finish on it as the connector plates are already showing signs of rust….. I like it enough that I’m going to repaint it with something more suited to our climate…

I very much like the design and performance but the finish is extremely cheap. I use Curt hitching products and love their performance that was my reason for purchasing this. If the coating was better this would be a premium product.
Surface rust and paint discoloration after one year.
One of the plastic hand-nuts started stripping/spinning, so I had to run down the opposing one to get it to hold, which means that the stud sticks into the cargo area. Wind deflector isn't even. The wind noise is very loud, I can't open my sunroof while driving anymore.
All told, it's probably worth what I paid, but it's not exactly a premium product.

Rust can occur with these type of cargo baskets. I recommend touching up the areas with a rust resistant spray to help protect it.
I am not an internet shopper type guy, but couldn't find a cargo rack here locally. etrailer was EASY to order through. 6 days later part #181115 arrived. I called customer service and a helpful Justin assured me the middle section, part #117,was 2 days behind, and yes, it arrived today.
Both boxes, and rack, were in perfect condition. The rack is good quality, good welds and paint job. I am very happy with it and impressed by etrailer customer service. I will be ordering more items from etrailer. Keep up the good work and thanks for the excellent roof rack and flawless delivery.

I mounted this roof basket on top of my 95 Ford Explorer and I get alot of great use out of it. I camp often here in N AZ and toss small logs, branches, in the basket to transport to my hiddendesolate camp spots for firewood - keeps all the dirtbarkbugs out of the inside. I also transport my bicycle in the basket rather than trying to stuff it inside my Ford. For all the abuse I give this product it still appears brand new and I am a happy camper with having so much more space to utilize.
Very sturdy & strong, didn't quite fit the factory supplied roof rails that came with the vehicle but I got it to work. I did try to contact etrailer about it via email & never got a reply so was disappointed with that. Rack is recommended, filled it full side to side & front to back with luggage & no problems. Little time consuming to install but not bad.
An extended Curt Basket was mounted to OE roof rack on a 3 row, 2007 Mazda CX9. Assembly and mounting was straight forward and easy for one person. Capacity is as expected. The pleasant surprise, and reason for this review... highway wind noise and fuel economy were very minimally affected. At some point I will shorten it for use on a 2 row, 2022 Volvo XC60, also with OE rack. It is a great choice.
Great rack for the price and one of the biggest available. This holds everything we need for when we go overlanding including a 10x10 pop up tent. The basket was perfect to mount lights and other items to. I have had no issues with it over the past year and never had to tighten any of the hardware despite the 100s of off road miles. 2 items that I need to address otherwise this would be perfect. Many of the welds have started to show rust after a first rain storm suggesting paint from the manufacturing process did not cover everything. Currently cosmetic and not structural. Second item to note are the mounts these are very secure but take time to install other review suggest cutting the bolts to not interfere with items in the basket but I would cut them down aid in time needed to install the basket on your vehicles roof rack. Overall great basket and happy with my purchase.

Those are great pictures and I am glad you like the cargo basket. For the rust, I recommend touching it up with a rust resistant spray like Rustoleum.
So far everything has gone smoothly. The assembly was easy and the install to the roof cross members was easy. We will soon find out how it is with items in basket. At this time I have not been on a freeway at high speeds, so I have no idea if there is any wind noise. I like the appearance on my roof.
Easy to assemble. I added the extension to accommodate my 03 Suburban - just wish it was a bit longer to fill my roof rack. Highly recommended!

After a year of use the roof rack has held up great. Still looks great....no rust either.
Happy with this rack, looks nice, is large, and is super solid. I did have to modify a piece and insert an additional part because the rails were not at the spacing needed, only reason this isn’t 5 stars.
1 Year review: Me and my family travel a lot and this oversized cargo basket made the most sense for our 2012 Sienna. Sturdy and perfect size as it was fitted for our coolers, totes, duffle bags, etc. Before setting the basket up, it was sprayed with Rustoleum primer/paint for extra protection. Highly recommend if you have a ton of baggage!
Quality construction on both the cargo basket and the associated waterproof bag. Was going to go for hard shell storage, but this combo is less expensive than any hard shell with this quality, plus I believe it will have a greater variety of uses.
The tracking information w/updates is by far the most detailed I've ever seen! I highly recommend them & look forward to placing future orders A+ The roof rack is sturdy, well made & the install was quick & easy. The detailed videos provided are also A+
I luv it. I really haven't had the chance to really use it though as my camping trip got cancelled due to bad weather but the plan was to load much of the stuff like chairs and tent on the top. I am able to install it myself pretty easily. I do like the fact that I left it on for a while and it protected the top from a bunch of branches that fell during a storm. Only down side is trying to clean under it but not a biggie.
I also have a cargo carrier on my hitch in the back that i got from you guys as well so use both. Very useful when you need to carrier a lot and can't fit in all in your car. LOL
Using 3rd row seats in the SUV really cuts cargo space so having this has worked out great on a number of trips. It causes a little wind noise so I don't always have it installed. It's quick and easy to install/remove. I have a waterproof rooftop bag that fits in it nicely. Note that I did cut down the mounting bolts so they wouldn't stick up into my cargo. If you have thicker crossbars, it may not be an issue but I have low profile crossbars. Without the extension, the basket would honestly be a lot less useful to me. With the extension piece, it is awesome. Camping gear, boxes of stuff from Ikea, hunting/fishing gear.
The rack and extension arrived in sturdy boxes, well packed and no damage in shipping. The parts fit together easily. The welds left something to be desired, which is why I gave it only 4 stars. As a precaution against corrosion,I got some plasti-dip, which is a rubberized vinyl sealant and sealed all the places where moisture could get into the various tubes of the rack. I was satisfied with the quality of the powder coating on all the parts. The mounting system to the roof rack is interesting and appears well-designed. The assembly and installation instructions are OK, but could have been written better. For example, there is an extra tightening knob for the U-bolts, but no description if it is there as a spare.
I bought this roof basket for my 5th gen 4Runner so that we could run the Trans America Trail. I looked at other baskets and this seemed to be a great deal, especially when I compared prices. Overall, I'm happy with it. There were some fit and finish issues (the holes didn't line up quite right and I had to drill them out in order to get the locking bolts through; the u-bolts that attach the basket to the rig's existing rack are WAY too long and poke holes in anything above them - easy fix with a hack saw or a bolt cutter, but really annoying). That being said, it has held up very well. 4,500 miles of off road, fully loaded, and I haven't had an issue. I continue to use it for trips. Overall, I would recommend this to other people.
So far so good. I was able to put it together by myself and hook up to my wife's SUV in under an hour. Seems pretty sturdy and well built. Have not loaded any cargo on it yet but will be soon for vacation. all in all so far i think its a good product for the price! thanks

After a year weve used the roof basket for all our vacations and has been great! weve left it on the car for months, no damage or issues. Ive taking it off and put back on with ease, just 1 person is able to do both. very simple, sturdy and extremely spacious. love it
Works like a charm. I have filled this rack to capacity many times weighing down my 2011 Subaru forester quite significantly. It is the right length to still open my hatchback as well. I think that the only thing I'd say bad about the product is the attachment to the car rack protrudes into the storage area and makes some issues with setting hard containers flat in the compartment. Overall it has added almost double the cargo capacity to my car and that's what I wanted.
Assembly and installation were pretty simple, although the box was missing one bolt/nut for one non-essential part (the rear metal plate). The U-shaped bolts that secure the basket to the roof rack are quite long, so if you have narrow roof rack cross rails, note that you may want to trim the bolts because they do stick up into the basket area. I drove for a few hours with the empty basket on the car and it does make some noise and it will slightly reduce gas MPG. I suspect there will be more noise and less MPG when the basket is loaded, but I don't leave for my cross-country trip for a few weeks. Overall, I'm very happy with the product so far.

Thank you for your review! I have sent your information to our customer service team and they will be reaching out to you regarding the missing parts.
I got my roof basket in three days of ordering it and it was very easy to assemble and to put on my Chevy Blazer by myself. All of the attachments for the screws on the faring and the attachment for the rack to the roof are all nylock nuts that are made to hold. Very impressive construction. I look forward to using it on my next off road or camping trip. I am very impressed with the construction of the roof rack.
Mounted it on my Rav 4 2012 base model. It fits great!Marerial and paint is great.
This roof rack fits perfectly on my 2022 Kia Telluride. It makes loading up all of the stuff my family needs for trips a breeze. It sits high enough with the Kia factory rails that the sun roof can still open. The wind noise isn't too noticeable. It does affect gas mileage when its just on the vehicle and you're not driving long distances. Overall, it was a great investment for myself and my vehicle.
As expected - manufacturing was a little off, requiring some adaptation, but nothing serious, and in line with what I expect for the price. Once together and up there, it is super solid and quiet, even with sunroof open. Happy.

One year in, no rust, no challenges. Used it a bunch with a range of stuff and weights on it- always super solid. I do recommend getting access to a grinder or other tool to cut off the u-bolts - they are universal and run long, sticking up into the storage cavity. I ground them off and capped with some little plastic screw covers from a local hardware store = never had an issue with them damaging what I am hauling.
These parts look great on my 49 Willys wagon, just make shure you clear the garage door before you back out
Wish the instructions were a little thorough but other than that it’s well built, sturdy and looks great!

I have gotten in contact with the manufacturer and they have said that looking at the photos it looks as if the item is exposed to the elements all times of the year. Snow left inon the rack will cause this. Salt build up from winter roads will also cause this. Since the rust has already started, we recommend trying to clean up the rust the best you can then get a good paint to prevent any further rust.
