TieRod Head AssemblyTieRod Straps

With its unique, rubber-coated stainless steel front straps, the RockyMounts TieRod bicycle carrier boasts the ability to fit nearly all crossbars, whether they are round, square, aero/elliptical or factory.

The TieRod is easy to install and provides a seamless look on most factory and aftermarket roof-rack crossbars. Simply wrap the rubber-coated stainless steel straps on the rack's head around the crossbar and tighten the tensioner to take out the slack, ensuring a secure and strong hold. To attach the rear of the rack, slide the steel bracket into the channel on the bottom of the wheel tray. Align the low-profile steel clamp underneath the crossbar and tighten it to the bracket with the included Allen bolts.

TieRod Rear Wheel Strap

The TieRod has a ratcheting rear wheel strap that slides along the rack's wheel tray to adjust to different bike lengths, ensuring that your bike is completely fastened down.

TieRod Fork

This carrier's heavy-duty fork mount is designed to fit bikes with quick-release front wheels. Its disc brake cutout ensures that it fits both disc and standard brake systems. The standard-size (9-mm), quick-release skewer firmly grips your bike's front fork. The TieRod can be adapted to carry bikes with thru axles by using the DriveShaft fork adapter (RKY1081 - sold separately).

Deter the theft of your RockyMounts TieRod and your mounted bicycle with RockyMounts lock cores (sold separately). The cores are keyed alike and allow you to lock the bike to the rack and the rack to your roof-rack crossbars using 2 cores. Lock cores are available in convenient packs of 2, 4, 6 and 8, allowing you to lock all your RockyMounts racks with the same key.

This is an amazing, low profile roof rack. It is extremely quick and easy to load and unload your bike on this rack. You can tighten down the fork cam from one side, which, in my experience, makes it far easier to operate than roof bike racks that require adjustments on both sides of the fork mount. Just spin until tight, lock the cam down and, bam, the fork is secure. I also like the little metal nub that can be rotated around the top of the fork to help keep the bike secure in the event that cam lock fails. Gives me peace of mind. This rack also works great for both my road bike and my mountain bike.

by:

After a little delay in getting the rack to my door it went on to my 2016 Outback without much fuss. The biggest problem was compressing the bottom lock core tab so it would fit in the front cover location and then locking the cover once installed. Once I used a thin blade to hold it in, it fit enough to be inserted. I am able to fully open the rear hatch with the rack installed.

I wish the rear clamp included rubber pads to help conform to the curved factory roof rack. And to prevent the metal on metal contact for the top half. I made my own spacer to prevent any damage.

Still hauling my bike after a year with the rack. I will occasionally lube the internals of the locking mechanism to make sure it functions as new.

Installation instructions could be improved.
Great
rack, high quality materials!

Fits my Impreza perfectly.

by:

easy install. great price.
First one
took 5 minutes and the second one took 3 minutes.
Just can't see spending the extra money on Thule or a Yakima.
Just as good if not better.

by:

This product is completely functional and the price is right. The engineering and manufacturing are not quite up to Yakima or Thule standards. I'm happy with the purchase.

by:

This item is fine, they tend to rust after months of exposure however

by:

Holds tight to elliptical factory crossbars. Was able to attach bike to roof with the crossbars that came on my 1999 Forester.

by:

I like the bike rack; however, I have yet to use it! It appears to be well made and quite functional! I found the instructions difficult to read, as they were faded and hard to see!

by:

Great product, easy to install, functions well and looks great.

Installed on 2017 Subaru Outback. 30 minutes installation for two racks.

Has seen weekly use and functions great, would recommend.

by:

Easy installing, good quality, study design.

  • Rocky Mounts Tierod Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Mazda CX-5
As long as the crossbars of your 2014 Mazda CX-5 are between 16 and 40 inches the RockyMounts TieRod # RKY1012 that you referenced would fit it well. I attached a review video that shows the rack being used on a similar CX-7 for you to check out as well.

  • How to Determine if RockyMounts TieRod Roof Bike Carrier # RKY1012 Would Allow Hatch to Open
The RockyMounts TieRod Roof Mounted Bike Carrier # RKY1012 could be installed backwards if needed to allow the rear hatch of your 2013 Ford Focus to open, but the overall length of the tray is 52-1/2 inches. You would need to measure from the front of your front crossbar back that distance to see where the tray would end up and if it would cause hatch interference.

I spoke to RockyMounts and the Replacement Front Mounting Strap for RockyMounts BrassKnuckles Bike Rack # RKY1245 will only fit the BrassKnuckle series bike racks, like the # RKY1201. To replace the straps on your TieRod # RKY1012, only the replacement Head Assembly # RKY2220 is currently offered. However, this will have both straps included as well as all needed hardware. This will be the best option we currently have available.

  • How to Mount a Bike to the Curt Cargo Basket # C18115
There are no bike rack attachments that were designed to fit the Curt Cargo Basket, # C18115, but if you use a bike rack like the RockyMounts TieRod Bike Rack, # RKY1012, then you can attach the head of the bike rack to the square bar and the rear crossbar mount can secure to the back rail of the cargo basket. Unfortunately the Yakima Boa will not fit around the round tubing of the Curt cargo basket. Curt's tubing is too small for the Boa to maintain a strong grip.

  • 15 mm Thru Axle Adapter Recommendation that Can Lock to Roof Bike Rack
This is a great question. Sounds like you are trying to determine which of the 15 mm adapters will allow you to actually lock the bike to the roof rack. Of the three you mentioned the only one that actually locks the bike to the adapter and then the adapter to the roof bike rack is the RockyMounts part # RKY1081. The rest are only adapters that allow the bike to fit the rack, but when our demo guy says the word lock he means it is clamped to the rack. Not locked like "theft-deterrent"....
