The SkyBox 21 has 21 cu ft of space for sports equipment or camping gear for up to 4 people. The aerodynamic, low-profile design and the dimpled lid with Carbonite texture help to reduce wind noise and drag. The box opens and latches from both sides and is designed to provide clearance when you open your rear hatch. Sliding clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and spreads so you can install the box in minutes without tools. The durable yet lightweight ABS plastic construction prevents warping, denting, or cracking.
The SkyBox lid opens from both sides. Whether you mount it closer to the driver's side or passenger's side of your car, this dual-side opening lets you easily access your cargo. If you are parked on a busy street, in a tight parking lot, or even next to a campground picnic table, you have the option of opening the lid from the side of the vehicle that works best for you.
Patented EndoSkel stiffeners act like ribs to make this lid 3 times stiffer than other Yakima cargo box lids. The fortified lid has an easy-access edge and spring-loaded hinges that allow for smooth, one-handed operation. The extra-stiff lid also helps reduce road noise and vibration, and it guards against dents and scratches when the box is in storage.
The SkyBox has SuperLatch security latches on both sides to ensure that the lid is completely closed. The SuperLatch prevents you from removing the key from the lock unless all 3 internal latches are engaged. That way, you are prevented from removing the key and driving off with an unlocked box. This security system also seals the box against dirt and moisture. Each SuperLatch includes an SKS lock core that can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.
Universal Clamp-On Mounting Hardware
The SkyBox installs with mounting clamps that slide along tracks in the floor of the box. These clamps fit most crossbar styles, and they adjust for different crossbar spreads. To adjust a clamp, loosen both knobs and slide the clamp to the desired location. Then tighten both knobs and push the cam lever down to close the clamp around your crossbar.
The SkyBox has an undercut tail designed to prevent interference with your vehicle's rear hatch or trunk. This tail provides more space for your hatch to fully open when compared with boxes without the undercut tail.
An integrated track system in the floor of the box provides tie-down points for securing your cargo. These anchor points work great with Yakima's SkyBox cargo net (Y07146 - sold separately).

Undercut tail provides hatch clearance.I got this a month before our trip to be sure I was able to get it (assumed supply chain issues) before the vacation season. I didn’t actually travel with this besides a trip around the neighborhood. I’ll update after my 1k mile road trip in July.
1. Delivery - free! Wow. No where else had free. The box was damaged but the Yakima was fine. Also it came with 2 massive crates which told about a day to burn.
2. Install - so the hooks are tight for the VW OEM roof Rack but I got it to work. I do wish the adjustment screws were a bit longer but it goes on tight and won’t be moving.
3. Fit - I was a bit worried about the tailgate hitting when opening but the mounts are fully adjustable so no issues on my end. It isn’t heavy, but awkward. I did put it on myself but two people would be much easier.
4. Storage - I rigged up some anchors and a ratchet system to hang it on the ceiling of the garage. It’s big but it’s light. Just kinda awkward.
It took awhile to get the skybox in stock but etrailer stayed on top of it and kept me informed every step of the way. I know supply chains are delayed everywhere but they never gave up. Special shout out to Erica at etrailer.
The Yakima Skybox 21 is a well thought out product. It seems like everything was designed by a clever end user. The cam locking systems that attach it to the rack are genius. There was no pesky aligning with plates or fumbling with special tools. A very straightforward locking mechanism with thumb screws. Also the latches operate smoothly and you can't lock the key in the box because it won't come out when it is open. A feature that I will find handy.
With six people in my family this is going to give us the extra space for cross country skis and a few bags so I can see out the back window.
Todd - 02/17/2021Finally after months of backorder, my 21ft cargo box came in. Very good quality and extremely spacious. I have my full-size spare in there with several beach chairs and hiding some Christmas gifts as well.
I absolutely love this skybox. I put a roof rack (just the two rails that go across the short width of the roof) on my Honda Pilot, and this box fits perfectly. The key cannot be removed unless the box is securely fastened, a nice safety feature. Only once was it an inconvenience because of low clearance in a parking garage. It has enough space for all the tent camping gear for a family of 5, and we use it for skis, snowboards, and snowshoes during the winter. I never take it off because we are using it all the time! Additionally, it protected my roof during the last horrible hail storm we had in Colorado. One of the Yakima stickers had melted off during transit, and a second one fell off shortly afterwards (I couldn't have cared less about the stickers, but just in case someone does).
Fits everything we need and allows us to open up more room in the interior of the vehicle. Strong materials but lightweight enough for one person to install by them selves
Easy to mount on vehicle, holds a ton, plastic is a bit more flimsy than the Thule.
Adds much needed space for long trips. Excellent construction. Like any other roof top carrier, the gas mileage does decrease but the trade-off is worth it.

We ordered the 21 Cu Ft Yakima Skybox and couldn't be happier! It gives us lots of extra storage for our long trips, easily connects to our minivan, and etrailer has an excellent price! We had problems with getting it delivered without damage by the freight company, but etrailer was VERY responsive and got a new one out right away. I would highly recommend ordering from them!
We love this roof box. It allows us to put everything we need above and frees up the back seats and cargo area of our Outback for our dogs. The only slight bummer is the rear wagon door on the Outback can’t open completely when the box is installed. Making the box shorter or higher might help but that would take away from its usefulness.

Always dry and super easy to install with 2 people (I have installed it alone, just not as easy on a pickup truck). No noise and very secure. Very happy with this purchase.
