Video Transcript for Exposed Racks Jeep Hardtop Roof Rack Review

What's up everybody, it's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we'll be checking out the Exposed Rack Roof Rack System for a hardtop Jeep Wrangler JK and JK Unlimited. It's gonna be a good solution to use the existing rain gutters on your hard top and not have to drill any holes to get a roof rack installed. It's easy to put on and easy to take off if you don't want it on there. Let's check it out. They do make this exposed rack system for JL, or JL Unlimited, or even Jeep Gladiators, so if you have one of those and that's what you're looking for, you can find it on our website.

Taking a closer look at the rain gutter system itself, you can see how the bracket on the crossbar goes down in there, it's got a foam pad so it won't cause any scratching. They have a clamp or a foot here at the bottom. You tighten up this bolt and that pushes up on there, pulls this down, and that's what holds it nice and tight and in place. The whole system is a black powder coat steel so you don't have to worry about rust or corrosion when you leave it out in the elements. I also like that its design looks like it's supposed to be here on the roof.

It kind of matches what you got going here on your hardtop and it doesn't have any of the obnoxious plastic parts, I feel, like with some of the other rain gutter accessories. So, they have big knobs on the side that are just plastic and just kind of stick out like a sore thumb. I like that this one blends in far better than those. Up here, you get a better look at the square bar design of the crossbars. Along with that, is you have this reinforcement here, just in case you put a little more on there, a little heavier, it's gonna not bow and push down on the hardtop.

It's got this as extra support. And if you want even more support, there's accessories, you can add these feet, that'll screw in right down here and it will just go on this raised part and that also provides more support for the bars themselves. Now, they can hold up to 165 pounds, so just keep that in mind when you're loading them up. Now, let's get some measurements real quick. The bar itself is gonna be 51 and a half inches long, and then, let's see how much space you have between your roof and the bottom of the bar.

Looks like one and a half inches of space here, and then we can look at how much it adds overall, and that's gonna be two and a half inches from this raised portion to the top there. And then the square bar itself, it's gonna be an inch and a quarter, on all sides. I've compared it to a couple of different roof systems out there, but Exposed Racks actually has their own variation and that's gonna have holes in the bars, so you can add their specific accessories. So, you can add load stops or kayak carrier on there, it goes right into those holes, those pegs do, and that's how they install. So, it's a little bit different than other accessories so if that's what you're thinking about using it for, I would check out that roof rack as well. But, if you're just gonna throw a cargo carrier on here that wraps around the bars, this is going to work great too. Let's show the conversation we had earlier with some of my teammates. What's up everybody Today me and Adrian are working with the Exposed Racks. That worked well with them over the last couple of days. So, we've worked with the two bar design, we have the three bar design up there right now today, working with and these are good because they're gonna go and attach to your hardtop, for your Jeep. And the rain gutters here, you're not gonna have to do any kind of permanent install, which is like your other option, you'll have to drill in your hardtop and permanently make holes in there. This one just goes right here in the rain gutters, on the side. It's really easy to put on there, really easy to take right back off when you don't want it up there. So, if you do want to take off your hardtop here, you're not stuck with this on there all the time. You can take this off, take off the first part of this and still have some access up her on your Jeep. So far, what do you guys think about it The other thing, oh yeah, let's hop up there real quick before I throw it to you guys. A special feature they have, is the holes in the top, which allow you to add their accessories. So, there's a load stop that just pops down in there and kayak carriers, you have paddleboard holder, paddle holder too. You got all kinds of accessories you can add on the top. They're pretty cool 'cause they quickly and easily go down in there and pop right back out. What do you guys think I'm gonna try to find one of those load stops real quick. Okay, cool. Yeah. So you said that just putting it on and taking it off, is real easy. I've been able to mess with the install, the soft dock ones. They go on a little bit different than that but all the hard top ones go on the same with that side bracket. One quick question, I was gonna ask. Those weight distribution feet, was that easy to kind of get figured out to where it was lined up right to the roof and everythingAJ Yeah. You have the two screws or there's only two points to put 'em, so you don't really have much of a choice. You just put them in right there and it lined up with the raised part of the roof just fine. Okay, cool. I knew there was like, some kind of adjustments you might have to make but it seems like it'd be easy enough. AJ Yeah. I like that that goes good with the built-in part here, just to help if you do put more weight on there. And to push it down the roof, it just adds more support with this built into it right away. Right. Do you get any scratching with thoseAJ They've got plastic caps on the bottom. These have plastic caps and then these have kind of foam on 'em, so they aren't gonna scratch anything up. And the same goes for the ends here on the clips that go on the rain gutters. These also have foam padding. What about dentsAJ I wouldn't think so, unless you're slamming stuff on your roof to make that dent on there, where you've overloaded it. Like right now, this front one is barely making contact but some of those back ones aren't. They're just hovering slightly above. So once you do load this up with some stuff, my thought is that it's just gonna make contact. It's not going to be pressing hard into it. Plus with those feet there, those are gonna take, I think, more of the force 'cause those are making contact so that foam will compress. Those pegs might make some contact but I don't think they're gonna be pressing hard against the roof. Especially when you spread it out over six of them. I would think it might compress the roof a little bit but it would just pop back up. Yeah, I think that's the idea. So AJ, knock on the roof. You can't really push it. Like I can push down on it here. I can push in like you would on a regular roof. So the idea is you can use anything that fits on square bars, adaptor wise, on this. Cool. For their accessories. So this is probably a better example. Earlier on, I was trying to explain it. So this is their load stop. And they're kayak work the same way. So you can just push in on this button, it fits in these slots. It goes right through and it's attached. See, I think that's the big thing with these. It takes seconds, compared to your regular channel, mounted accessories. AJ Right. No clamp around or anything like that. Right. AJ It's tight fitting. But you can still use those if you wanted. Yeah, you can still use those. Yeah, if you wanted to put a bike rack or something on there, you could do something that would fit around square bars. Yeah. That's a nice thing. And they do have bars that are just solid. But then at that point it's kind of like, you know, if you're gonna get, get these. Aesthetically, they look nice, they go with the Jeep really well, I think. The guy who made these was a Jeep guy, right Like he just designed all these Jeep stuff. But yeah, I mean, as far as the, I guess the one that you're looking at now, the three bar systems, so, I mean a big thing is the rooftop tents. And I guess, yeah, since you guys weren't able to put some stuff on there. I think when I had found, it was kind of a issue that I had ran into in talking to them about it but anything basically, any of those rooftop tents, which I think the majority of them have those kind of rails that go along the base and then they just clamp on. So whenever you do that with these you only get four plants, I guess, total. So you just put a two on the front, two in the back and then it would just rest on that middle bar. And then that's what that middle bars for. So there's also like a four bar system too if you want even more support. But I think the three bar would do you just as well. I kind of, what you we're saying earlier, when you said they we're kind of built for Jeeps, I kind of touched on that in the demo. Just being like, I've worked with some of the other rain gutter designs that go in here, and they have the big plastic pieces here and the big hand knobs that are just kind of an eyesore, and they don't go with the Jeep. This one looks way more like it's supposed to go with this hard top. It just kind of fits in better, I think. Yeah. Actually that was the next thing I was gonna ask you, was, I mean, compared to other other systems you've worked with do you think if you we're a Jeep person is this kind of no brainer to go with Over any other crossbars that we offer'Cause it blends in, so like I said, it's on there nice and tight. It's really sturdy. You don't have to have the somewhat goofy looking hand knobs on the side. It's kind of like I already said. Yeah. It's just like, better. Yeah, it looks nice. Hey AJ, I thought these we're were red. I see you've got black ones up there. Do you know what's going on thereColleague 1 The red are in the box behind me. Colleague 2 Yeah, we got 'em right here. Yeah. There's a red version and a black. And are those versions different If I'm a customer and I want to purchase one are they just color changesJust the color. We mentioned in the video, that's the same way you're gonna see it, , you're gonna stand out or if you got a red Jeep and you want it to blend in, you can do that. I think the red, the black comes in solid and with those click in mounting points and then the red only comes with those click in mounting points. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I think that's definitely the biggest standout for me. Being able to switch that stuff out, like the kayak carriers, real easy to use. And yeah, I mean, they have a few other things. Fishing rod holder, paddle holder, like you said. Kayak carrier over here. This is the offset one. Yes. It's so much easier. And does that seem pretty solid I mean, compared to, you know, your regular-It moves out a little bit. Once you got it strapped down, I imagine, it'd be better, but yeah. And I'm pretty sure they have one that's not offset too. If you want that. There's a center one and there's a paddle holder, like you said. Yeah, and there's a ton of like, they call them like mounting plates, which they have like little channels in 'em, so you could like mount your normal channel mounted stuff with those, but they have a whole variety of things. They have like really long ones that span the whole bar, really small ones. So you can definitely, if you got stuff already, you can find a way to make it work with these. Cool. But yeah. Yeah. I don't, have anything else if everyone else is good. Thanks guys. Thank you guys. Have a good one. It's not that hard to install. You see it's on there, nice and tight. There's no rattling on this portion with the feet or the bracket or appear at this bolt. I don't feel any movement or see any movement. That means it's gonna stay there, nice and tight when you're going down the road. I think it's gonna really help you out on your Jeep. That way you don't have to do that hard install of drilling holes in your hard top and worrying about that. These go on there very easily come off just as easily. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helped..

Review from a similar Exposed Racks Roof Rack in Roof Rack

I bought the ER rack for my 2011 2-door Jeep JK. It is high quality, sturdy, and very quick and simple to install or remove. I have used it to transport my windsurf board and mast 20 - 30 times at highway speed with no issues.

Rack spacing for a 2-door Jeep is 24 inches, which is adequate for my 9.6 ft board.

Note: I had to buy nuts and extra spacers to bolt the front rack to my Jeep frame. Since I bought the Jeep used, it's possible that some pieces had been removed from the rollbar.

This is a great Jeep rolllbar! It attaches securely and is quick and easy to attach remove. I rely on it to transport watercraft safely.

Looks very sharp and it’s very practical, not to mention super easy to install. Love the fact it has easy to snap optional accessory.

The rear bar runs directly over the satellite antenna and interferes with the signal. Pins instead of bolts to hold them in the mounting brackets would be better so the bars can be removed when on in use.

etrailer always ships quickly and I've ordered from them multiple times. In this case, some of the hardware was missing from the original shipment (from the manufacturer). etrailer quickly responded and got me the parts I needed in less than a week, and the new roof rack looks great.

Did not come with the nuts and bolts to assemble. Using temporary bolts until I can correctly size the right bolts.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We definitely want to make sure you get all the pieces that should have come with your product. I have sent this to our customer service team and they will be in touch soon.

They delivered 2 rear bracket packages instead of including the front and rear. So I’ve not been able to install it yet. I’m thinking of sending it back as o couldn’t put it on to use it when I wanted to. Sorry about that. But we were pretty disappointed

Easy install, perfect fit. Mounted my ski rack and was able to clear the garage door. It would not clear with the Thule load bars. the low profile is quieter too.

Review from a similar Exposed Racks Roof Rack in Roof Rack

So far, so good. Just received these and they appear solid and beefy-they are heavier than most. The package they came in was mutilated and had obliviously been re-taped. Both of the cardboard tubes had their end caps blown out and the cross bars loose in the package probably caused the damage to the box. To their credit, only 1 of the plastic end caps showed slight damage. Both inner boxes containing the mounting brackets appeared to have been cut with a box cutter. The bolts used to connect the brackets to the crossbars were missing. I called customer service and was told replacements would be shipped. I have not yet received them and as such have not mounted the rack on my ‘21 Gladiator and cannot speak to the process or fit. UPS has done the testing on the finish and I’m happy to report the crossbars passed! I’m looking forward to the increased versatility these should provide.

Excellent customer service! My initial order arrived missing one of the two pieces shipped. The box the piece was shipped in seemed to have gotten mangled in transit and the piece was missing. I worked with the folks at etrailer and they promptly shipped me the part again…received it yesterday!

Everything that etrailer was involved in was awesome. Great communication. The only negative was the condition of the exterior box and how the carrier handled the package. The external and internal packing had been damages by the carrier.

  • Does the Exposed Racks Roof Rack # ER57FR Fit Under a 2018 Jeep JK Wrangler Hard Top?
While we do have a great Exposed Rack that fits onto your hard top 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited, we do not carry any racks that install underneath your hard top. This is because the only racks we have that install under your top are engineered to fit soft top Wranglers. With that being said, the # ER57FR is only designed for soft tops. If you are set on Exposed Racks, I recommend using the Exposed Racks Roof Rack for Jeep JK and JKU Hardtop - Square Bars # ER34FR. This rack is specially...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2017 Jeep Wrangler JKU 4 Door Hardtop
For your application I recommend going with the Thule roof rack setup for your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited because it has a 165 lb weight rating, is easy to install, and it has a better crossbar than the Rhino-Rack # RRSG59 kit that you were looking at (which is only rated for up to 88 lbs. The Exposed Racks Roof Rack # ER34FR does not yet have a weight rating (July 2020) and it uses square bars. These do look a little more rugged than aero bars but they will also produce more wind noise...
