Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack

The Malone AirFlow2 roof rack lets you carry gear and accessories on the roof of your vehicle with raised, factory side rails. This complete roof rack system includes 2 aluminum, aerodynamic crossbars and 4 towers. The full-length crossbars extend past the towers to give you more mounting space for carriers, and the towers have built-in locks to protect the rack from theft. The rack clamps onto your raised side rails and tightens down with the included tool, so it's easy to remove and install.

Aerodynamic Shape

Malone AirFlow2 Crossbar with Endcap

The AirFlow2's Aerodynamic shape helps control air flow over and under the bar to significantly decrease wind noise and vibration even at highway speeds. This decreases the need to add a fairing to your roof rack. The aero-style bar also reduces drag and helps maintain fuel efficiency.

Lightweight, Aluminum Crossbars

Malone AirFlow2 Crossbar with Endcap

The silver crossbars are made of aluminum, which makes them strong, lightweight, and resistant to corrosion. The bars also have plastic endcaps to protect the interiors from the elements and to give your roof rack a finished look.

Durable Towers with Built-In Security

Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Towers

The towers are made of molded nylon that won't fade or wear down when exposed to the elements. Each tower includes a nylon cover with a built-in lock to deter would-be thieves from removing the rack from your roof. The covers also protect the towers' interior and hardware from the elements.

Easy Installation with Rubber-Coated Steel Clamps

Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Installed

The towers attach to your vehicle's raised, factory side rails with rubber-coated steel clamps. The rubber coating provides a superior grip on your side rails and protects them from damage during installation and use.

Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Installation Tool

To tighten, simply turn the bolt inside the tower assembly with the included installation tool until the clamps are snug. Once assembled, the towers and crossbars stay together as one unit, which makes removing, storing, and reinstalling the system a snap. To remove, simply remove the cover and loosen the bolts inside the towers with the installation tool.

Channel and Clamp-On Accessories

Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Rubber Clamps

These crossbars have built-in top channels with strips that allow you to carry channel-mounted accessories on your roof. You can remove, trim, and re-insert the strips around the mounting hardware of your accessories to keep the crossbar channel capped and quiet.

Maximum Cargo Carrying Capacity

Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Full-Length Crossbars

The AirFlow2 includes full-length crossbars that extend past the towers. The increased length gives you more space to mount accessories and carriers to your roof rack. The bars are compatible with most universal, clamp-on accessories and carriers.

etrailer was great to work with. They are very responsive with emails and following up with tracking. I was little disappointed with the average ship time. It was almost like the product didn't get out the door until a week later, but I did get the product in working condition. As for the product quality the only complaint I had was the procedure/instructions for installing. I would totally recommend putting the rubber trim piece in the bottom of the rail during the first part of installation. Don't be afraid to slide that piece in the rail and cut it to size once it hits the end of the rail where it touches the mount. Its easy to cut and this piece is crucial to making the rails very quiet. I installed the first time without it and the wife hated me for installing these. We both looked at each other during the first drive test and said that whistle noise has to go! After installing the trim in the rail these rails were perfect for what I needed. It just needed a better instruction for installing it to top quality. I also recommend you put the trim in the first time because those side black pieces are plastic and they take a special kind of push in on the clip and pull to remove without breaking the clip. I broke my first clip but after that I was able to remove the other successfully. So because of the poor instructions and the removal of the rail to finish installing correctly I am now looking for a plastic end for one of my rails. Overall pretty good and durable. I also wish the instructions explained that when you tighten the mount that it also tightens on the rail too. Maybe I needed to watch a couple more videos about installing these before doing it.

The Roof rack is really good- very happy!
Had
it installed by the professionals and it works well!
It makes a whistling sound and I am looking for a solution:)

Comments
You mentioned that the rack is making a whistling sound and what I recommend is adding a fairing to the rack. For a 58-inch-long cross bar we have part # INA262
Inno Fairing for Roof Racks - 48" Long - Black
$89.99
available. It helps to move the wind up and over the roof rack therefor reducing the whistling effect.

Very impressive hardware, instructions, and service at 1/2 to 1/3 the competition's cost. (Correction: there really IS no competition.) I tossed the rack onto my 2011 Honda Odyssey OEM roof rack without tightening anything to see how it all fits together, and was very pleased. I figured out how to fabricate a simple, elegant, low-profile, non-invasive, barely noticeable (it's my wife's minivan, after all) roller so I could easily slide my 12' kayak on top by myself. I planned exactly how to tie the kayak's nose and tail down securely without any mods to her van. I bought all the pieces and parts to do all the above, but before I got out my tools and mounted everything, I asked myself "Is there any way this kayak will fit securely inside the Honda with all the doors and windows closed?" The answer was, "Yes", so the rack is now gathering dust due to no fault of its own. It's inexpensive enough (try saying that about any of its "competition") that I'll keep it anyway in case I buy a longer kayak some day or need to mount the rack on some other vehicle.

When shopping for any related products now, I don't even look at any other brand or source. I now trust Malone and E-Trailer to provide the optimal combination of product, price, and service. I have no connection to Malone or ETrailer, and paid full price, but when a company or product performs this well, I want to help get the word out for everyone's benefit.

Good knock off of the Thule Evoloution Wingbar; I purchased it because it was about half the price of the Thule when you factor in the price of locks, mounts and bars. The Malone Airflow2 bars are installed on a 2016 Toyota Sienna, with a Thule Motion XT XL mounted on the crossbars. Happy that there is no whistling or other significant noise from the bars. They seem really sturdy. The lockable mounting clamps are just okay in quality. While I like that the locks come with the Malone clamps (Thule charges extra), and that the Malone clamps can fit a variety of rails, the rubber covers that are on the underside to protect your rails kept coming off during install as the clamps were tightened down. Had to carefully splay them out, and then tighten clamps slowly and double check frequently that the rubber was staying in place. The installation was not as easy as it should have been - - mainly because the 58" crossbars have about 6" of overhang past the edge of the mounting clamps, so you cannot use the hex wrench tool to continuously tighten the mounts. You have to pull out the wrench and reinsert it for a three quarter turn. The main problem with install was putting in the vinyl/rubber strips under the crossbars, which are solely for noise reduction. I could not accomplish this in the 35-40 degree weather, as the vinyl/rubber became too stiff. Heated them up with a hairdryer to make them more malleable, but after getting about 6 inches of the strips inserted, they would stiffen up again. Accordingly, I had to remove the crossbars and end caps, remove one side of the clamps and loosen the other clamp, and then remove the crossbars. Then I could slide the vinyl strips into the middle, and then had to reinsert the mounting clamps, and then remount to the van's rails. So, the installation took twice as long as it should have. Thule recommends a 53" bar for the Sienna, and since Malone only had the 50" or 58" bars, we went with the larger bars, so we could shift the cargo box to one side for easier access. Wish they made a 55" bar or would authorize cutting down the size of your bars without potentially voiding the warranty. But all in all, these are a really good bargain.

by:

I really like that these crossbars give you the option to mount your accessories on the track, but they are noisy. Also, They should be available in black.

The product worked as advertised. Easy to install, and look good on my vehicle. Works well with my rooftop basket.

Volkswagen

As of now, with only instalation and 2 miles of travel with it on my car, it is doing a great job keeping my Sears cargo container on my VW Atlas. It looks good on my vehicle and was easy to install. It would be nice if there were measurement marks from the ends to help center the rack on my vehicle, but I just used some TLAR to gauge it. It uses a 5mm Allen wrench so I put a bit on my drill to make installation easier.

Okay, etrailer seems to be okay so far.
Just installed the Malone airflow 2 and it took way to long. I had trouble getting the boots on the rail system. After trying one side then the other, it still took a while to loosen or tighten, trying both ways till they finally went on.
Bottom line, I had to work with it to long to get them on the rail system, but after I did! It seems okay. I honestly am not wanting to go through the hassle of taking them off and putting them on over and over. Cutting the rubber inserts for the bottom for wind noise may make that experience okay if it keeps the boots from moving when taking the rails off.
Also thought I had one the book break on me but it’s technically not broke. Here is a picture.

I bought this roof rack for my 2017 Honda Ridgeline with factory installed side rails, and am very pleased. The product has excellent features for the price. Features I wanted: aerodynamic profile for a quieter ride; locking towers for security; and built-in tightening tools for ease of installation. The fit and finish are excellent. Installation is very easy and can be done in a few minutes. I use mine for transporting a canoe and kayak.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder

-2015 Nissan Pathfinder.
-Malone AirFlow2
Roof Rack - Aero Crossbars - Raised, Factory Side Rails - Aluminum - 58" Long.
This is my first ever roof rack so I am by far no expert. I researched many roof racks and I just couldn't see spending 500, 600, or over $700 on an accessory. The installation is not nearly as easy as some would think, in my opinion. However, I am anal and meticulous about every detail. I put the roof rack rail on and got everything into place with measurements (width between them, how much they stick out, etc). Then I mark the underneath of the racks for the rubber to go so I could cut it precisely (you slide in the rubber...although I think some cramped the rails down and then stuffed the rubber in).

Pros:
-Look at my vehicle...I think they look amazing...especially for the price.
-Everything is very firm and doesn't move after proper installation.
-Matches chrome on car and current cross bars

Cons:
-End caps are cheaply made, but I didn't have any problem getting them to snap in. Get a higher grade plastic or something
-Directions that were provided were sparse and you kind of have to figure it out on your own, which wasn't too difficult.
-THE NOISE is my biggest complaint. It's not terrible but enough to annoy me. These are advertised as "Airflow2" so come on. And I'm no aerodynamics professor but shouldn't the more narrow end be pointed toward the wind, not the fat end? Maybe a moonroof visor would help the noise...I don't know.

3.5 - 4 out of 5 because of the noise and because of the cutting and cheap end caps. But for the money, I think they're worth it. Good luck to your purchase and installation...it's not too bad. :)

Comments
Unfortunately, any time a piece of equipment is installed on a vehicle roof, there is going to be wind noise, its unavoidable. Airfoil-shaped crossbars like those on the Malone rack you purchased are actually much more quiet than the older square or round-profiled crossbars. The crossbars are indeed meant to be installed so that the thicker end is pointed forward to the wind, just like an aircraft wing. To keep the wind noise to a minimum, its important that the entire length of the slots in the underside of the crossbar are filled with the provided rubber strips .

2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris

The 58" Malone MPG216 bars replaced a set of 58" Malone Steel bars. The new bars feel sturdier and a definitely quieter. The fit and finish is great, except for one bar end that doesn't fit as tightly as it should. I put my Yakima Skybox 21 on top of them and they did the job. My only complaint is that they already have a slight bend after being loaded with just 140 lbs. I expected a bend to occur later in the year since the top box stays on for 6 months out of the year, but not after just one road trip. But, there was no movement from the bars or the box at all during the 1600 mile trip. So far, so good.

Comments
The Yakima skybox is about 70 lbs on its own. The weight capacity of the roof rack is 165 lbs. If you are putting 140 lbs worth of cargo in the box, plus the weight of the box itself on the bars that is 210 lbs. The bars will bend if they have 210 lbs of weight on them. Please make sure you are taking into account the weight of the box on the bars as well.

Toyota RAV4

The rails look great, very easy to install (although I wish the hex key tool had a ball tip, I used my own wrench). I read other reviews about wind noise, I have none with or without the stripping underneath.
My only recommendation to others is to measure your width, the Rav4 is a little more narrow than my other vehicles. I went with the 58" so it would extend out past the vehicle. I'm often by myself loading the top, so it gives more rail to work with, making it less awkward trying to avoid contact to the vehicle.

Comments
After a year, this product still gets a 5 star. Easy install and good price. I did notice some wind noise with the sun roof open, otherwise quiet.

I sent these back because I did not feel confident the crossbar feet would attach squarely to the Honda Ridgeline rails. Secondly, I did not like the fact that the feet did not attach to the crossbars without sliding around. they even slid off the bars when unpacking the box.

by:

One year after for my Malone roof racks, still loving them. I have used them mostly with some Rhino Rack ski/snowboard racks all winter in the harsh Canadian cold. One I realized that I could use my cordless drill with a long allen wrench tip to speed up the process of installing and uninstalling these racks, they from a 5 star rating to, well couldn’t go any higher than it already was, but if I could, I would. [Just don’t overtighten.]. I have installed some gorilla tape over the black plastic end caps so they don’t fall out. Because I install and uninstall them often (about 12 times total in the year I’ve had them, they were a bit loose, but to be expected. With a little tape, they’re not going anywhere.

by:

TLDR;
Quiet bars, Truly easy install,
Really strong - just as good if not better than expensive competitors, one downside is easy to fix loose end caps.

We purchased the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack 58" aluminum cross for our 2018 Subaru Impreza and truly couldn't be happier. They are practically silent (when there's nothing on them) and look like they came with the car. The installation is so easy and despite being used heavily these past 9 months haven't failed in any way. I work construction and have used the bars to transport 2x's of up to 16' in length and with proper tie downs has felt secure and I haven't encountered any 'smiling' of the bars. Fun fact, I can stack 5 pallets on these bars without stressing about it. The only thing that isn't great is that with mounting and dismounting the 'caps' at the end of the bars often 'unclip' and regularly after unloading ill find them on the ground. Its not the worst thing ever but I imagine its just a matter of time before I lose them unless I secure them with sealant which could be a 2 minute fix. I use heavy duty ratchet straps and am sure to not 'compress' the bars into one another when securing objects and I haven't seen the bars shift on the car's rails in a meaningful way since initial install. As for car specifics, I like the extra wide bars on the impreza but I have occasionally hit my head on the edge of them, lol. For context my previous experience with roof racks was a nissan versa note where we used an old yakima clip system that often shifted and ultimately dented our roof :/ This Malone system for me just works the way it should.

Very nice product. Fairly easy to install, but I had to have my wife help me. My only complaint is that there is a little noise when going over 50 mph.

I do have a solution for you. You may want to consider adding a fairing like part # RRRF4
Rhino-Rack Fairing for Roof Racks - 50" Long
$104.00
to the roof rack. It is designed to deflect the air flow up and over the bars in order to reduce wind noise.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 11/04/2021
Actually used it this past weekend to bring home 4 pressure treated boards. They were 2 x 6 x 12 pieces needed to finish a deck. These were heavy pieces of wood and we tied 2 to each side on top of where the rack attaches to the roof rail. From Lowes to home and over the US41 bridge on the Caloosahatchee river doing 40 mph max speed. All was well and the deck is now complete.

Love these Aero Crossbars! I received them on a day where I happened to have a super long day at work. I was so tired but when I saw them at my door, I was like, I need to install these. I did the installation in the dark with little light. They were super easy to install. They are strong, sturdy sharp looking.

I was wondering how they were going to be due to the costs. Hundreds of dollars cheaper than other brands I was considering. However, I have say I absolutely love them and they look great on my car. 5 star review hands down! I feel like I got a really great deal. If you are looking from some crossbars, I would absolutely recommend the Melon AirFlow 2.

I had to give it a four-star review because the package arrived open at both ends. Luckily all the materials were still inside the package And I was able to install the next day

by:

I order Malone Airflow2 Cross Bar. I received last May 11, 2022 The cross bar lools
sturdy, but upon checking the entire package The Bottom Rubber Strips is missing. The rubber strip is very important because it will reduce the noise when you’re driving. Should be putting an Excellent Rating for Etrailer, but missing a very important part of a cross bar is kinda sad and disappointing. Hoping they will send me the 2 missing rubber strips for my 58” malone airflow2.

Please and Thank you.

2022 Subaru Ascent

Fit well and were fairly simple to install. Lots of measuring and remeasuring to make sure everything was balanced and secure. Included tool was awkward to use. It was not long enough to extend beyond the end of the crossbar requiring inserting and removal for each turn.

by:

I ordered the bars to replace the factory ones on my RAV4. They arrived in great shape on the day promised. Installation was a snap thanks to the videos on the etrailer site. I did not use the built in wrench. The hex is a 5mm so I grabbed a hex socket, extension, and my 3/8 ratchet. Took all of about a half hour to install. Could have been quicker but it was nearly 90 degrees out and I was not rushing.

Getting the factory bars off was more of pain than putting the new ones on. I have a set of Yakima pads on them because of the boat that I use. The bars with the pads installed are quieter on the highway than the factory ones. I installed the slot rubber strips only on the outside ends because the pads cover the center. Got up to 75 on the highway to test the nosie level and they were nice and quiet even with the sun roof open. Solid, easy to install, the 58 inch width is enough to easily get two boats on and having the little extra hanging out makes tie down easier.

Great product and great service. Seen with my homemade load assist. 20 bucks worth of PVC and a dollar store pool noodle with a few zip ties.

2015 Ford Explorer

The Malone AirFow2 Roof Rack- Aero Crossbars arrived in the mail around 1pm
today and I finished installing by 4:30 pm. They look great on my metallic black 2015 Ford explorer and will work great for my needs and the price was great.

The only problems encountered were the end caps for the Aero Crossbars plastic retaining clip was broken on 3 of the 4 end caps. The one that wasn't broken worked and I was able to remove it to install molding to reduce wind noise. The other 3 I just mounted using clear silicon sealant. I hope they remain on as I have not driven the SUV with the crossbars installed yet. I would appreciate you sending replacement end caps with retaining clips intact. Care should be exercised because the plastic seems to be brittle and could easily be broken.

I would recommend these Crossbars for Ford Explorer installations and you can' t beat the value and they look great with my silver factory side rails.

by:

I went for the cheaper rack and now regret it. Annoying to install, rubber pads always fall off, tightening the screws is a major chore, terribly loud. The design engineer should be ashamed.

by:

Great quailty! Put a Thule box on it. Pretty much the same bars and mounts as a Thule but much more affordable. Highly recommended!

On the back I would anchor to the hitch or the tow hooks underneath the vehicle. Up front, I would use the tow hooks welded or bolted to frame. Make sure you keep the straps away from anything that gets hot or moves as the straps could melt or be cut. You may have to consider longer cross bars, like part # MPG216, to accommodate all 4 kayaks.
