Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Colin: Hey everyone, it's Colin here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system on our 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. Now, with this roof rack system, it's going to mount to the raised side rails of your Crosstrek. It's going to be a nice and easy way to get any of your favorite rooftop accessories loaded up, whether it's a bike rack, kayak carrier, maybe even a cargo box. Now on top, you can see we have our Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero crossbars. These are going to be 46 inches in length.

They are pretty short on our Crosstrek. You can see, we don't have a lot of overhang. So if you want a longer crossbar, you can get that. The next size up is 49 inches long. So that'll bring your overhang about to here on each side.

So if you're interested in that, just check out our website. Now, these are black in color, but they're also available in silver. If you think that's going to match your Crosstrek better, then you can check out our website for those as well. The nice elliptical shape of our crossbars is going to help cut down on wind noise and drag, especially when you compare them to standard square or round bar roof rack systems. What's nice about these elliptical style bars is that we can take out the rubber strip and cut it to length for our T-slot accessories. We're just going to take our included end cap key, unlock it, pull the end cap off and pull the rubber strip out, cut it to length for your accessory, and then reinserted it to make sure you cut down on that wind noise and drag.

I'll re-insert our end cap and do just plastic locks right here with a little plastic key that simply to make sure that the end cap doesn't come off.If you want more security for your roof rack, there's a lock core system that you can get from Rhino-Rack to replace these plastic cores with that provide more security for your roof rack so that no one can remove it without the key. Now down here, we have our SX series legs connecting our Vortex Aero bars to our raised side rails. Basically how you get these tightened down, we'll take the end cap off. There's a bolt on the inside right here. That's going to be how you tighten down the SX series legs.

They should basically sandwich down on the Crosstrek, you can see they got a really good hold on them. We have a nice rubber gripping all the way around our leg. So it's going to help make sure that doesn't harm or scratch the finish of your side rails. I just really liked the fact that this roof rack system can be removed so easy, all we got to do is loosen up that bolt and then raise it up off of our raised side rails. That's something that I really like, because personally, when I'm not using my roof rack, if maybe on the weekends is the only time I need to get my kayak up there or my bike rack and I take it off for the week when I want to drive around. I just personally want to remove that. This makes it very easy. Now I want to give you guys a few measurements, something that's nice about this rhino rack system is that it's very low profile. From the top of our roof to the bottom of a Vortex Aero bar can be two and a quarter inches, that still going to be enough space to get any clamp-on accessories under your crossbar. You just do want to make sure you're careful and you don't scratch up the top of your roof. Now from the top of our roof to the top of our crossbar, it's going to be three and a quarter inches. You want to keep that in mind for any low clearance situations, just in case your garage is a lot shorter than the average one, just keep in mind, you have that height added to your roof. Now we're also going to have 165 pound weight capacity for our Vortex Aero system. You want to double check with your Crosstrek owner's manual and make sure your roof can handle that weight. Well now that I've gone over some of those features, let's show you guys how easy this is to get it installed. Now assembly is very easy. You can see we've got our front crossbar installed already. All we're going to do is take our SX series legs and feed it into the track on the bottom of our crossbar.Once you get it in there, there's no set place you got to put it. We're just going to get it on top of our roof so we can adjust it. No specific place you got to put it, just get it on your raised side rails. And now we'll grab our tape measure to measure our crossbar spread. And what we're going to do is just measure center on center. There's no set measurement, just make sure it's at least 24 inches or what you could do, which is what we're about to do, is we have our front crossbar, the foot bumped up against the edge right here. And we did that on both sides. So over here we measure it to make sure it's at least 24. We're just going to bump it up against this edge and then tighten both sides down. With our included tool we'll just insert it up there and then tighten it down. Now this tools actually going to let you know when it's fully torqued to the correct specifications. You can see how there's a curve in the tool and you can see how it straightens out, when I try to put pressure on it to tighten it, it's going to let you know it's fully torqued. Now, just repeat this for the other side. Now we can just take our end caps, put them on, take our included key, lock them on there so they don't fall off. From there you're ready to load up your favorite rooftop accessories and then hit the road. Well, thank you all for watching and I hope this information helped you out, but that's going to do it for our test fit of the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system on our 2018 Subaru Crosstrek..

Rhino rack products are superior and I prefer them over Yakima or Thule.

However, I would like eTrailer to know, and to warn other customers that over the years the items I order from them always come with cosmetic damage or missing parts due to insufficient packaging.

In this case, my Vortex bars were shipped in the retail box which had opened in transit so two of the end caps escaped and are who knows where. Under a conveyor belt line in some UPS building or in one of their trucks somewhere.

This is not an issue as these end caps I intended to dispose of replacing them with the locking end caps I ordered with my bars and towers.

etrailer, I do not need resolution for this issue but your track record with packaging and shipping is sub par. Please step up your game so your customers receive complete orders.

I know that you are not looking for replacements. I hope that you will have a good experience with the rack and I will share your experience with our shipping department.

Package, both items appeared used, but in good condition. The legs were not in the factory box, but just a eTrailer box. The instructions were hard to follow, even with a little help from YouTube. Just about to test drive to check the noise level. Time will tell, there is soft rubber on the legs and it may be wise to remove these when not in use, especially during Florida summers.

I really like how the racks are holding up. I kept them on the Jeep, but it is garage kept. I like them much better than my Thule racks. I havent put a kayak up there yet.

@Richard We're glad you like them!

I haven’t installed rack yet and everything appears to be in order.
* I wasn’t anticipating that Rhino -Rack Sports Ladder Peg (s602) be made of plastic.
Does it have the strength, durability to perform well and not get brittle in colder temps?

I wanted to let you know that the racks to do have longevity in all type of weather and are made to be taken off and on the vehicle.

I purchased the rack and pegs a year ago. I was just recently reflecting on how well the racks have worked out for me with my work. I’m glad I made the investment in them, it was worth it.

Using Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars, Using Rhino Kayak holders. Also use a Rhino bicycle rear receiver mount. Love Rhino products.....strong, well engineered, low noise, and every part is quality... mounts, straps, etc. Photo is departure picture from last years trip to Big Bend, Texas. We probably put a couple thousand miles on these pieces of Rhino equipment on all types of roads at both Big Bend Park and Big Bend State Park... You really cannot go wrong buying Rhino products. Everything they make is well designed and will not disappoint.

Rhino products are just great products They work today like the day I bought them and they show very little agewear. You really cant go wrong with Rhino products.

This rating is not for the product and solely on the practices of ETrailer. ETrailer erred and did not ship this product when they confirmed and when called to check the status charged me an additional $xx plus for overnight shipping in order that I have the product in time for our trip. 2 of the 3 parts of this order did arrive on time and in good shape, but the fact that Etrailer charged me additional for their shipping error does not sit well with me at all and I would never recommend the company to friends.

I am sorry to hear that your items did not arrive on the day that you had paid for. I see that our customer service department is currently working on getting some compensation figured out for you.

Its been one year since I installed the Rhino Rack crossbars and I have absolutely no issues. The main use is to carry my Kayaks on my 2013 Subaru Impreza utilizing Yakima JayLow kayak carriers. The only caveat is to be sure to properly cut and install the plastic channel inserts (underside) or you will experience an annoying whistling sound. If you're looking for high quality crossbars, I highly recommend these.

by:

Great product except it scratches the drip channel on the roof. Would recommend.

by:

I purchased the Rhino legs, cross bars and J-style kaya carriers together and could not be more pleased with the combination. The system was installed in an evening and used the next day. The legs were very simple to install on the cross bars and then mount on the vehicle.

by:

Just what I was looking for for my 2021 MB Metris Cargo Van with Raised Rails, for hauling a 14-foot SUP. I wanted as low profile as possible and the Rhino Rack SX Series Legs and Aero Crossbars looked best. Relatively easy to set up.

by:

It is rather hard to give a review on each part.
Here is the review of the SX-Series Rhino-Rack.
I enjoyed the detailed shipping status.
The bars will be used with a roof tent (also from etrailer).
Climbing trip to Idaho in a few weeks.
We shall see how well this all works!
Interestingly, the upper side of one internal bar is white with my black set.
Maybe it was missed in the painting process.
etrailer has been a pleasure to work with thus far.

I am very pleased with the etrailer.com. Easy to navigate website and expedited shipping for no extra cost. I ordered and received my product in about a week, which is very reasonable for being across the country.

The product arrived in tact and with no damage. Easy to put the rack bars on my jeep. I've included pictures of the completed result. We plan on buying the attachments that will mount our bikes and when we do we will be doing so from etrailer.

by:

Shipped according to schedule, easy to install, and looks great. Can’t wait to put it to use. Thanks!

by:

These feet worked like a charm! We were able to use these to install the Rhino Pioneer Rack onto our existing factory rack (2007 Toyota Land Cruiser). Adam at etrailer.com was awesome!

by:

I spent a week reading reviews and forums to find the right one for my 2019 Jeep Cherokee that I just bought a few weeks ago. I just have to overthink everything but it paid off. I just received them this morning and installed them myself! First time for everything! It was really easy. The only part that was frustrating was the very first part... sliding the rubber pieces into the crossbars. They would not slide very well so I ended up using a bit of oil to make them slide better. Other than that, installation was easy and quick. I LOVE the looks of them. Very gorgeous!!! Thank you so much!! Very happy with the end result!!

by:

Easy to install on the Bronco Sport factory roof rails allowing for a very low install height for the Pioneer platform!

by:

Love the Rhino Roof Rack system plus the incredible Customer Care.

by:

Nice, solid rack. It went together very easily. It will support my canoe and my rod rack fits well on it. It’s very light weight and the directions were spot on. There is also videos to help make installation easy.

by:

Despite obvious(fair amount of box damage) rough handling by the shipper. Everything inside looked great. And it arrived 3 days early. Thank you etrailer!

by:

Unfortunately, the vortex aero crossbars whistled very loudly on my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. In addition, I found it difficult to center the crossbars with the SX series legs. And, finally, these legs would not stay tight for more than a day or so.

by:

Great product at a great price! Mine have been in service for over a year carrying kayaks, etc. They worked perfectly on a 2004 Honda CRV.

by:

Amazing. Easy to put on a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness. Never shifted with my 123lbs RTT for continuous use in offroad and highway speeds for 10 months. Held up in every weather and temp from -8F to 100+F.

by:

Fits my 22 Subaru Outback Wilderness awesome! Great low profile and minimalist design. My only dislike is the bright white Rhino Rack logo on each foot. Sorry Rhino, your name/logo needs way more graphic design; the white silk screen was able to come off with acetone and elbow grease, but I wish the whole rack setup was fully blacked-out from the factory without bright decals or logos. One of the cross bar boxes arrived open/damaged, but contents were fine. Great rack tho!

by:

Great product and very easy to install. Looking forward to using this with my Ford Bronco Sport.

by:

received well packaged and on time... will be installing in a month or so, i'm sure it will perform well for years to come. TRUMP 24' - 54'!

by:

East assembly, seems like a very solid roof rack.
