Adam: Hi everyone, Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima round bar roof rack system on our 2017 Chevy Express. This is going to be a great addition to your Express van just because obviously we're going to be able to fit quite a bit of passengers in here, and it's always nice when you're going on vacation and you have a lot of room just to kind of relax on the long drives you may be taking, so luckily we can put either all the gear that they may have with a cargo basket or a cargo box up on top of here, or if you want to carry all your canoes, kayaks, or even a decent amount of bikes you can put them up here as well just so all your passengers will be nice and comfy. These are the 66" round bars that we have on top of our Express van here. They are made of steel with a nice powder coated finish, so they are going to resist against rust and corrosion over time. Also they will have a weight capacity of 165 pounds, but make sure that your Express van can handle that kind of weight.Honestly, with 165 pounds you can use these yes, for all the recreational stuff you may be doing on your vacation, but also for work. You can throw lumber up here, drywall, even a couple ladders. All you got to do is just make sure it's tied down properly and then you're ready to hit the road.So let's do some measurements for your guys.
From our roof to the bottom of our bar we are going to have about 4-3/4", and from our roof to the top of the bar it's going to be a little bit underneath 6", so we're going to have plenty of room to be able to fit even some of those attachments that are going to wrap underneath and around these bars. Even if they are bigger mounting hardware we don't have to worry about it rubbing against our roof.It is relatively easy to install on the roof, so let's just go ahead and show you how. Okay, so the first thing we want to do is we're going to have this little lip here. It's made of plastic. You get a little rubber boot and all you really need to know is you see this little dip right here That's going to be facing up towards our tower.I found it easiest to kind of like just spread it out and get that hole going and then kind of pull it a little bit.
I'm going to have to push that top lip up. Then you do the same kind of thing to the other side. Just make sure it's nice and tight and just flush with this lip. You're going to have to mess with it a little bit to get it to fit on there really good.So now that we have that installed, we are going to want to loosen this bolt here on the underneath. There is a tool included, but once you get it loosened most of the way you can actually just kind of rotate this assembly and that's going to allow our bars to be able to slide in there, because when we tighten it down it's going to push this little black piece up to lock the bar into place. So we're going to take it and this lip that we put the boot on is actually going to sit in this little divot here on the roof.
Seat it down into that little groove there. Then of course this metal part is going to be underneath this lip here.So we can either go ahead and grab the bar or just place it on the other side. If you have a specific bar width that you want to meet, definitely measure all that out. I'm going to put it about here, and I'm going to go grab our round bar.Okay, so you see how these towers are kind of facing inward That is the orientation that we want on both sides, and of course we want those facing the same way as well. This is not right and this is correct.
So that's something to keep in mind. If you have the caps on your round bar already installed, you're going to have to remove them, and I'm actually going to start with this one here. Slide it all the way down. Grab our other one. This might be a little bit easier with an extra set of hands, but I'm going to see if I can get it done all by myself. So now with those on our bar we can gently lay it down, trying to get it into the right spot. If you get one side kind into place you can just kind of lay it down a little bit and then go and fasten and get the other side kind of into place, and then we'll go ahead and fasten them all down. This wouldn't be a bad time to get the measuring tape out, making sure that the distance between the towers on this side and the distance between the towers on that side match.Sometimes if you have a more bubbly roof this bracket that hooks underneath this lip on the back side, it might be rubbing against your roof. We do have extra little rubber bumpers here, so if we are having that issue we can actually just put that on the backs of the bracket to prevent any wear to your paint, but in this instance we are not having any of those issues, so we won't be using them. The next step, we have a little push knob here. It's going to thread into our tower, and as we thread it in it's going to pull the top part of this metal section here back towards the tower, so then the bottom part is going to go into that groove, giving you a secure fit. As you can see, it's doing its thing. You're going to have a decent amount of turns. That should get it pretty tight. Give it a good wiggle. Then you can go ahead and do the same thing on the other side. One thing I do recommend getting is you can get some locking cores so someone can't just come up to this and just undo it and grab your roof rack and run off with it. We do sell those separately at etrailer.com, and you'll get keys with your kit just to give you that added protection. So before we fasten down our round bars here so they're nice and tight we're going to use the fact that they're loose to just make sure that they're even on both sides. You can kind of twist and get them nice and even. You can grab a tape measure if you want, but if you have them where you want them, which I do, you can go ahead and take that same tool that we used to loosen up the bolt and we can actually go ahead and tighten it. So now the only thing we have left to do is install our caps.Well everyone, that's just about all you really need to know about the Yakima round bar roof rack system on our 2017 Chevy Express.

The yellow pads on the crossbars are pool noodles secured by zip ties. They provide padding for a third or even a fourth kayak.
Yakima stuff is pretty good. If it were not so over priced (and this retailer gave the best deal) I'd rate it 4 stars. However, I know from past experience that Yakima bars, despite coating on the current bars that is significantly thinner than older bars, will rust if used near water. They sell this stuff for water sports! And then act surprised that it rusts. Since I have a lot of their stuff and old rusty bars I bought these as a replacement despite my misgivings.
The foregoing is NOT a criticism of this vendor who sold the stuff at a good price compared to what Yakima wants and delivered it promptly

Done. Thanks for the great service. you and your company do a great job and the followup you provide is so rare as to be non-existent these days. Much appreciated.
These extra long round bars have been awesome. They allow us to carry 2 17ft long canoes on our car or a skybox and a canoe. They poles are sturdy and allow for plenty of storage.
My only recommendation would be to add a wind breaker because the bars are the least arrow dynamic and make noise over 65mph.
The crossbars are outstanding they are working perfectly with the towers I had to buy for my Honda odyssey roof rack I forgot the name of them I have my YAKIMA space Cadet rocket box on top of the bars in addition to my YAKIMA ski racks
So far so good. Have had hitch for a year and it’s a game changer. Can reveal it quickly and throw on a bike rack to carry 4 bikes including an ebike. Amazes me that it’s so solid. But it is. And invisible when not in use
I bought a new bottom plastic panel for my Tesla model 3 from Tesla.
The Yakima bars I used for the roof rack system on my truck are great. Now, combined with the rack system on my topper shell, I have the length to support long objects like long boards, boxes of siding or ladders. However, it is the fantastic customer service from etrailer.com that will have me going to them the next time I need items for my truck. I tried to order this rack system from a competitor and waited 4 months before they finally just gave up and cancelled my order. One call to etrailer.com customer service and I had the complete rack system I needed in less than three weeks. The representative I spoke with spent over an hour helping me identify the items I needed. That is the kind of service I will not forget.
I received the Rain gutter riser, 66' round bars, boat loader and SKS lock cores all well packaged and in good shape. These are for a 2020 Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon. The products were easy to install and will work great for loading and transporting my Hobie Outfitter Kayak. The Outfitter is a heavy kayak at 75 lbs unloaded. The Yakama Boat loader makes it easy for one person to load and unload the kayak. The rain gutter mounts and round bars securely hold the kayak for transportation. When not transporting the kayak the whole system quickly removes.
A big plus with ordering through etrailer is the excellent custom service, they will be my go to for future orders.
Been using Yakima products for decades. First use as a teen on a 1974 Chrysler Newport for a canoe. Still buying their products. Handing down canoe with Yakima racks for their vehicle. Why change a good combination?
the part is what it is. all prices are similar online. What sets etrailer apart is the customer service. you call and you get an empowered, cheery, competent individual. I had two cancellations I did (not their fault) and they handled both quickly, easily, and with a cheerful disposition. Excellent customer service.
It's hard to find Yakima parts. I own a Rack and Roll trailer and I know. Got these round cross bars at a great price. Free shipping. And most importantly, even with all the current shipping problems I got them in just a few days. These guys hustle and really work for your business. I'm soon getting a new suv and will absolutely buy my trailer hitch from etrailer.
One of the few retailers with these in-stock, they arrived in time to get my racks up and running.

Over the past year, my Yakima Raingutter Towers and 66 rd bars have supported my iKamper 2.0 2X rooftop tent beautifully.
Exactly as pictured, in new condition, ready to go on my truck. I needed to find round bars, as I was using my bike racks from my old system from my Subaru Outback transplanted onto my Nissan Frontier.
Heavy duty. Just right to haul two roof top kayaks. Should handle Thule Hullavators on each side.
Good 'nuff. Used Yakima for several years for ski racks and bike racks. No disappointments.
Works fine, but end caps are a bugger to take off.
Very pleased with the product and experience with etrailer. Product was shipped and received on time! Kayaks are on the truck and ready to travel!
no end caps for this price is really not very good
Works great

Nothing has changed. I just used the bars while evacuating me and water toys during the recent fire. All worked. Great vendor who checked in to see how things are going after a year. Hes great, Yakima remains pretty good but too expensive
