Video Transcript for Blue Ox Safety Cables Review

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox safety cables for flat towed vehicles. Now these are pretty heavy duty cables rated at 7,500 pounds. So on a vehicle like a Jeep Wrangler that should be more than sufficient to be safe. The cable has some really nice features as a plastic coating is on it so that's gonna keep it from scratching your tow bar. You also have metal keepers here that act as a spring loaded stop here. That way it's not gonna accidentally disconnect and when you do need to disconnect, you can simply just push that down and also makes hooking up super easy as well.

The coil design also keeps it up off the ground even with its 84 inches of length. This should be no problem, and that way it's not dragging. It also kind of makes it nice for when you are unhooked. It kind of coils it all together, keeping it nice and tight. Now, many tow bars don't come with cables included so this is a component that you can pick up separately that's gonna work well.

Now, if you do have cable management on your tow bar which allows your wires and all your cables to be a little bit cleaner attached to the tow bar, you're gonna want to pick up a straight cable version and that way you can kind of easily attach that to it and we have those available here at etrailer. Other than that these are gonna be a great addition when picking up an entry level tow bar that may not have the cables or if you're just replacing some old cables that have started to fray and poke you when you use them. This is gonna be an awesome option. And that was a look at Blue Ox Safety cables for flat towed vehicles.

Replacements for original set, one cable damaged during entering a gas station and a recent detachment on highway. These same cables did their job and saved my toad after a locking pin sheared off and my blue ox bar detached from the coach.

excellent product and quick delivery, great service

Great security safety cables to flat tow our Bronco

They were exactly what I wanted, they work well.

The safety cables work very well. They have maintained the original coil which keeps them from getting too close to the ground. The snaps are great and easy to hook and unhook. Thank you E-Trailer for handling great products.

Delivery was on time as promised. Great value.

These replaced chains (never again!!) Very happy with the purchase and cables.

One of our cables was scraped through the exterior cover and caught on the ground on an incline. I thought it best to replace the cable so found these. Now I will have a spare too.

bought these before they work great

Had owned one of these for 9-10 years and had no major problems, but the rubberpads the bikes ride on did come loose after about 7 years so I had to glue and eventually tape them back on to get longer use out if it. The new one I have is performing as well as the older one but the pads are already coming loose after one year

Critical product for safe towing in keeping towed vehicle behind towing vehicle in case the tow bar or hitch fails.

The delivery was delayed. Product great

These are great. Easy to use, fast on and off.

No complaints

Great quality

As advertised. Looks great.

Love the cables! Way better than chains.

Product was great both times. After I learned to keep the cable from between the hitch and the ground the second set looked like new yesterday when I looked at them!

Nick S.

All is well with the Blue Ox equipment! Good equipment!

Exactly what I ordered

The cables sent were rated at 7500 lbs which was fine with me but one of the rubber clips that keep the "S" hooks from jumping off the hitch was torn and could not be used. I leave the cables on my RV hitch at all times so I used plastic cable ties cinched around the "S" hooks in place of he rubber clips at the RV. I should have spent the extra bucks and bought the 10,000 lb. with the attached spring loaded metal clips.

Cable seem good the outer coating seems to crack easily only used 2 times and already seem some cable showing.

I bought these for use with the Blue Ox Adventurer Tow Bar. I found through one of the etrailer [online] videos that I would need the Safety Cables. They arrivd with the other items I ordered in less than two Days. I was surprised at the speed of delivery.

Great product. I've towed the car behind my RV several times and have peace of mind that if something breaks, I've got great cables to prevent further damage to my car and other vehicles on the road. Thankfully I've haven't had to put them to the test, and I hope I never do.

Products were as expected and were delivered in a timely manner.

While there was an instruction sheet that came with the safety cables (which I didn't need), there was no instruction sheet that came with the latch handle springs (which I do need). Therefore, I don't have a clue how to install the springs and will have to take my Blue-Ox to a mechanic to have them installed

The safety cables are great.

Carl A.

The cables are great.

The coiled cables are great, as they don't drag or mar your equipment like chains would. They're also easy to install, and come with a helpful reminder to cross them under your tow-bar to support the bar should it ever fail.

  • Are the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88196 Coiled
Yes, the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88196 that you referenced are coiled. I have attached a review video so that you can see how this keeps them off of the ground. For a complete flat towing setup you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. If your flat towing setup is missing any of these parts just let me know what it is you are needing as well as the year/make/model of your vehicle...

  • Will The Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88196 Fit Though a Hole Approximately 2" in Diameter?
The hooks on the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88196 are 0.53" in diameter. The opening inside the hook is 0.83" and the width of the hook is 1.91". I have included an image of this so you can verify if you will be able to fit it though your hole which you said is around 2" in diameter.

  • Replacement Safety Cables for Blue Ox Tow Bar
It sounds like you have the Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar # BX4330 that comes with safety cables that use the rubber clasp like you are describing. We don't have a replacement clasp that will offer better protection from damage, so your best option will be to simply switch to different safety chains. I recommend the Blue Ox 7 Foot Safety Cables # BX88196. This chains feature the same S-hook but they use the more standard metal keepers to ensure a secure connection. They have a capacity of 7,500...

  • Recommendation for 60" Safety Cables with S-Hooks
For a safety cable kit close to the design of the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 7,500 lbs # BX88196 with a 60" length I recommend checking out the 64" Demco Straight Safety Cables - 14,000 lbs # DM9523055. We don't have any kits with 60" long cables but this is the closest length we have to what you're needing. The biggest difference between your Blue Ox cables and these Demco cables are the Demco cables are straight and don't have that coiled design. The coiled cables come in 42" and 80"...

  • Will the Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar Fit With the 22 inch Tabs on the Base Plate Kit for a 2013 Fiat 500
The Blue Ox Acclaim, part # BX4330, that you referenced in your question will fit Blue Ox removable-tab base plates that are spaced between 23 inches - 30 inches, so they Acclaim will not work for your application. The Blue Ox Adventurer, part # BX7322, would be the appropriate tow bar that you will need to use instead. • Recommendations For Preventing Coiled Safety Cables From Dragging With Blue Ox Tow Bars
I do not recommend wrapping the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88196 around your tow bar. This could cause any breakaway cable used with a supplemental braking system to not activate in the event of a breakaway. Instead the simplest fix to try and prevent this from occurring again in the future is by using Cable Ties # DW05727-10. This will allow you to tie up the cables where they sag between your motorhome and the front of your Mini Cooper. These have a break strength of 50lbs so they are...

Yes you can wrap your the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 7,500 lbs # BX88196 or 10,000 lbs # BX88197 around the trailer tongue, though ideally you would use a mounting bracket like the Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket - 6-1/8" Long x 1/2" Diameter # MB12 or 5/8" Diameter # MB58. The weight capacity listed for cables is for the pair. For example the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 7,500lbs # BX88196 you referenced would have a 3,750lb capacity per cable.
