This solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by a solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses maximum power point tracking technology to compare solar output to battery voltage and converts that output to an optimal amperage.

Automatic Multistage Charging System

Using a multistage charging system, the controller automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes a preset charging profile for lead acid batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Bulk: This mode charges at the full rated load for a quicker recharge time. As the name suggests, this is where the bulk of the charging happens. It typically charges the battery to at least 80% capacity.
  2. Absorption: This mode provides controlled voltage to ensure a full charge. Once the battery reaches between 80% to 90% capacity, the absorption state will kick in and start charging at a regulated voltage. In each charging profile, this mode is set to last for 30 minutes after the bulk charge is completed.
  3. Float: Once the battery reaches full charge, this mode maintains a lower voltage to compensate for self-discharge. This reduces battery stress and minimizes gassing and water loss.

Practical, Convenient Features

This solar controller is constructed with IP68 rated housing that is sealed to resist vibrations, water, and dust. This allows the unit to function properly in a variety of environments.

It also includes several built-in safety features to help protect your equipment. The charging process will shut down if the controller starts to overheat and when an overcurrent, overvoltage, or short circuit is detected. Also, if the battery is wired incorrectly, the red LED indicator will turn on.

How It Installs

The solar controller mounts near the battery. It is wired to the solar panel using MC4 cables. Then, the battery bank is wired to the terminals on the controller. You can also install a fuse or circuit breaker (sold separately) up to 30 amps between the solar controller and battery for additional current protection.

Video Transcript for Review of Go Power Solar Charge Controllers - 10 Amp PWM Solar Charge Controller - GP28FR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Go Power! PWM 10 amp Solar Charge Controller. Now this little controller is going to act as an intermediary between your solar panels and your 12 volt or 24 volt lead acid batteries. It's going to monitor and adjust the output coming from your solar panels before it sends that on out to your batteries to prevent your batteries from overcharging which can obviously be very harmful to them. So this is gonna have a maximum solar panel input voltage of 30 volts for your 12 volt systems.

If you have a 24 volt system it will give you a max of 50 volts. So depending on what kind of system you have, we'll determine the maximum solar input for you. This does use the digital pulse with modulation or PWM technology to regulate the panels output to provide a nice, consistent charge. I won't go into the specifics of that but that's a really nice way of making sure that you're not going to get too much power coming from your solar panels. This will automatically adjust between multiple charging stages.

So it will switch modes as the battery charges to help extend your battery life. If your battery is really low, it'll switch to the bulk mode where it gives it the full load to help charge the battery up quicker. Once it gets about 80% charged capacity it will switch into the absorption mode which is a more controlled voltage to ensure that you're going to raise up to that full charge without overshooting and potentially overcharging and damaging your battery. And then once it's fully charged it will switch into the float mode which is just going to help maintain that full charge. You can see, we do have three colored LEDs here.

These are going to give you several different indications. So your green one is your charge. So when you have a battery connected, if there's power coming in from your solar panels, like during the daytime, that green light is going to be flashing. If you have a battery connected at night, when there's not power coming in from the solar panels, that will just be a solid green light. If that's off, it means the battery is not connected.

That yellow light is going to alert you to a low charge in your battery. So there's three different indicators there as well to tell you how low your battery is getting. And then that red light is going to be your load status display. So it will alert you if there is an issue. This does have built-in safety features to help protect your RV's electrical system. So it is gonna be monitoring or overheating, over current, over voltage, as well as short circuiting. So if that red light comes on, it alerts you to a problem in your system. Now, this is a really compact, a little solar charge controller. There are others out there that have a few more bells and whistles to them, USB plug-ins, several outputs, several inputs, that sort of thing. So depending on your needs, this is kind of the most stripped down basic form. You're only gonna have your positive and negative prong coming in from your solar panels and then going out to your batteries. You've got a double prong plug there. So very minimalist. It is going to do a really good job for you, making sure that your batteries are staying healthy, but it's just your basic functionality, is nothing over and beyond what you're going to need, but it is gonna do a good job of making sure that you're able to take care of your batteries with your solar panels. As far as our dimensions go, this is roughly four inches, just shy of four inches long, by about call it the shy of two and a half inches tall. And then roughly three quarters of an inch deep. So not gonna take up much room for you, should be very easy to get mounted. Now you can see, they do have a couple mounting holes there for you. The hardware is not included so you will have to just get a couple of screws or something to put in there to hold this in place. But this does have a durable potted construction. So where our connections are, on our little connection points are. There is a potting material that's gonna hold those in place. So this is gonna be very rugged. It's gonna resist vibration, water, dust. It's got an IP rating of 68. So it's gonna do a really good job of holding up well for you. So if you are gonna be going down the road frequently, doing a lot of trail riding or just going over rough roads, this will hold up really well for you. You're not gonna have to worry about those connections jiggling, loosening or anything like that. So like I said, we do have other options that have, they are a little bit bigger. They've got different connection types for you. So depending on your situation, you might need a larger one but this is going to be the 10 amp version. That is just your basic functionality, taking that input from your solar panels, sending it out to your batteries, making sure that everything is running properly. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Review from a similar PWM in Solar Charge Controllers

This is an upgrade to the original Go-Power Solar Controller that came with my Lance TT. It will easily handle the increased production from the additions of a portable solar generator. The small increase in the backside dimensions forced me to slightly increase the opening to allow it to fit. The screw holes aligned perfectly. Before buying a replacement for your unit that has a malfunctioning display screen, you might try to disconnect the battery then return the power... it might reset for you.

Comments
This product works just like the one I replaced. I did add a Victron Energy SmartShunt so I can check from my phone and know exactly what the charge is at any time. With the Go-Power, take a shower and run the fan would the Charge indicator to 65 for several minutes and get me worrying about the battery before it caught up... with the Victron, I know exactly what the charge level is at all times. It counts every electron going in an going out and is always accurate.

I am disappointed! Contra to the detailed product information that is advertised on your website for this controller, the solar controller unit I received, DOES NOT handle / charge lithium batteries! Like I explained to CS prior to submitting my order, the description of the controller on the website, does not match the actual item being sent and please check it before shipping! So, buyer beware, if you want a controller that will charge lithium batteries DO NOT order/purchase this item from etrailer!

Comments
I contacted the manufacturer and it looks like you may have received and older model. The up to date models, like the ones in stock now, do in fact have the capacity to charge lithium batteries like the product descriptions says. I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this to make sure you are taken care of.

Review from a similar PWM in Solar Charge Controllers

This dual bank controller is what every RV needs. It charges the camper first as primary, then charges the chassis starting battery secondary. Never a dead starting battery since. RV sits all winter to full charged batteries in the Spring.

Comments
The dual bank solar controller keeps both house and chassis batteries charged. No more dead chassis battery. I promote this controller to all my friends.

Review from a similar PWM in Solar Charge Controllers

Brought this as a upgrade to my original GP-PWM-30 which did not specifically support a Lithium battery profile. Also for the remote Bluetooth Android App. Looked around for a MPPT solar controller that supported Dual Battery Banks without finding a suitable one. So I want back to this GoPower brand of PWM controller that did. It has performed as expected and the upgrades made seem to have increased the amount of AmpHours drawn from my solar panels by a small amount. I still wish it had been fully upgraded to a MPPT controller.

Comments
One year update... all is well! The GP-PWM-30 is still performing as designed. No issues.

I am not sure about the solar charge controller as I will not use it for some time. Pual B was outstanding to help with the wheel. I realized that I ordered the wrong wheel but then called right back and he helped get the right wheel and get the order out. It was good to be able to talk to someone and your service was very good.

It installed just fine with my set up. After the latest software release, I found it did everything as advertised including the aforementioned Bluetooth connectivity issue in other posts. I had no problems and look forward to camping in my trailer next year with the controller in my rig.

The switch from the non lithium controller to this one was easy. But the controller reads 100% all the time which confused me. I did call Go Power and spoke to someone about that and his reply was that it would always read that. And the best thing would be a battery monitor. Yet another thing to change out or add.

This unit replaced the one in my Lance 855S that did not have bluetooth and it has been working great. Based on the odd mounting place that Lance used, this unit is very handy with the bluetooth and pairing it with my phone to show the information that I like to see occasionally such as amps coming in, state of charge, etc. etrailer was very quick with shipping the unit and I would certainly consider them for a future purchase.

If you lose the Bluetooth connection you may have to disconnect the wiring. Bluetooth is very sketchy. Go out of its short range without disconnecting and you may have to disconnect the wiring.

Was quite pleased with this controller and the solar panel that I got through etrailer. This controller has a much more detailed power display than the one it replaced. It was easy to install and was able to hook up 2 solar panels making my dry camping, which makes up about 95% of what I do, much better knowing that my batteries are fully charged.

etrailer.com is our go-to source for our trailer and motorhome parts and upgrades. We've always been more tha pleased with not only their service and prices but also the quality of the website including the product descriptions and expecially the helpful videos. This most recent purchase, a GoPower Solar Charger is awesome! This is a direct replacement for our failing Speciality Concepts Mark PV Controller. This unit fit perfectly into the existing opening and the mounting screws lined up. This GoPower controller charges the battery bank considerably faster and far more efficiently. Our battery voltage memains higher and the "boost" feature quickly tops off the battery during higher useage. As an added bonus, this is able to charge a secondary battery bank which we use to charge and maintain the engine batteries in our motorhome. Finally, it's easy to use and can handle many battery types including Lithium. What a great value!

I like your tracking software. The order was delayed because of poor weather conditions in Kansas City but still came to me on the expected date. All was in good condition. I replace the old controller with this updated one and it was a simple install and the whole system works great now. Thanks

Works well. Is very much seamless in its operation . Ocassionally the Bluetooth interface to my iPhone would need to be re established but it seems app updates may have eliminated that issue. With 300 watts of panel it is able to bring two batteries up from 50% charge to full charge in a day and a half during summer. Fit my lance 1172 pickup camper perfectly. Panel knockout and wiring were already in place from factory.

Review from a similar PWM in Solar Charge Controllers

I needed an upgraded solar controller to be able to charge my LiFePO4 batteries. I also did not want to have to cut another hole in the camper wall, but be able to use the same spot without modification. The installation was a perfect replacement.

Bought this to up grade our current Go Power solar controller so that can do lithium. The Bluetooth is a nice add on as well. First time using etrailer. They had the best price and quickly shipped to Canada. Will consider etrailer for future purchases.
