When I was tightening the mount one of the 2 holding arms came off. They are welded but not very good. It says to tighten the nut to 60 foot pounds so I got out my trusty Snap On torque wrench and set it to 60 foot pounds. It never got to 60 before one of the holding arms fell off. Don't know if this was a one off defect or just poor manufacturing. What will happen while it is bouncing up and down the road?

Kate kept check on my order and revieved in three days fast shipping. The Angle spare tire mount fit perfect on my trailer. Will order another one for my 10' trailer. Completely Satisfied!!

by:

It was tack welded on the spare tire bracket (1)and as soon as I tightened it down it fell off, it said to torque to 60 pounds, but I did not get it even tight

Wow, thats just terrible, Brent. I am going to take care of this. Be on the look out for an email!

by:

The unit arrived 2 days after ordering which is pretty amazing. I received two emails confirming my order about an hour after placing the order. The unit is heavy duty and easy to install with basic tools. I readily recommend this mount for anyone needing to mount a spare tire on an angle iron trailer.

by:

Work great with my 13 inch tires and fit perfect on the trailer

I'm dismayed to report that I was greatly disappointed with these mounts. But first, the good news. After they're mounted on your angle iron railing they will indeed provide a sturdy mount for your spare. The bad news is a number of design flaws. First off, they're too long. They stick the spare out further than the fenders of my trailer and I suspect this will be a common occurrence considering their length. Second, every bolt is coated with a thread lock solution, making it much more difficult to screw on nut. This would not normally be an issue but the "keeper" that's supposed to keep the wheel stud carriage bolts firmly inside the mount as you tighten down the wheel do nothing of the sort. You end up trying to push the head of the carriage bolt in tightly while you struggle to use a wheel wrench one-handed to try to tighten the nut on a coated bolt. I addressed this on the second mount (I bought two for two spares), by purchasing two additional wheel stud nuts and used them to lock the studs into the carrier before mounting the wheel itself. Finally, the mount is horribly theft prone. In addition to the wheel studs themselves, either of the mount bolts are easily accessible and require theft protection. So plan on three bolt locks to secure your wheel. For you guys at etrailer, it was a good first attempt at designing a mount, but more work is needed to refine the design.

Ideal spare tire carrier for a utility trailer with angle iron side rails. Easy installation and adjustable for any bolt pattern rim.

The only thing I would say is that I added a piece of 2 by 4 between the uprights on the trailer to eliminate the vibration for the cantilever design of the bracket. Problem solved.

by:

Works really well. I will be securing the bottom of the tire to the trailer so it doesn’t put stress on the mount when driving.

by:

The tire mount I ordered arrived a couple days earlier than scheduled as it was shipped immediately like within the hour after I ordered it. It's a very simple and easy install and I'm very satisfied with the product and service from etrailer Thank you!

by:

The concept is GREAT! The durability not so great. There could be many improvements to make it a great product. Such as; a round wheel plate with various holes to fit different wheels, and beef up the structure by 50% to handle a 6' x 10' trailer, spare tire. This carrier would be ideal for a small Tractor Supply trailer. Again it is a great concept. Thank you

by:

Good way to attach the spare tire. This looks sturdy enough, but time will tell as I have 11 miles on one lane dirt roads to get out every trip.
A big design flaw is the 12 mm carriage bolts are a pain to hold tight during tightening. I know this is a universal fit, but nevertheless... Why metric bolts. now I need to carry a 19 mm deep socket and extension. I plan to weld a stud to support the tire and get rid of the metric bolts to hold the tire.
Also the spare is bit over 2" proud of the fender. I had to mount this on the drivers side due to removable ramps on the right side.

by:

Mostly it’s good. I particularly don’t like the retaining ring that goes on the carriage bolt as it didn’t really hold well and leads to it being slightly difficult to tighten the nut with the wheel on as the carriage bolt does not want to stay in place as it should.

by:

This is a great system for holding your spare tire. Keep in mind that it only fits angle iron up to 2 inches on each dimension. My trailer has 2x3 inch angle iron, so I had to drill a hole through the vertical part of the angle iron to mount the carrier. Still, it's great to have my spare up and out of the way.

by:

Works as it should. I think there should be two screws to mount the bracket instead of one. But it works great so far.

by:

Perfect solution for angle iron mounting on my utility trailer. Was able to locate it directly above vertical upart of railing which gives it more stability. Fits my 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, should be listed in the description. Only reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars is no way provided to keep wheel mounting bolts from falling out or moving around when trying to mount wheel, plus need for two wrenches to tighten the wheel nuts. I bought a couple of 7/16” lock washers with the teeth in them that thread on the bolts to keep bolts in and help keep them adjusted to correct width. Haven’t pulled trailer anywhere yet so don’t know how well everything will hold up.

by:

This is a decent design to hold a spare tire on an angle iron rail however it was not very stiff once the weight of the spare tire was on it. It was able to wobble around and I'm not sure how this would fare with road vibrations over time. I solved this problem by placing it above one of the frame rails running to the tongue. The weight of the tire is supported by the trailer frame instead of the spare mount.

by:

Superb customer support when my product was received broken. No questions about fault, just quick replacement

by:

HI, this solution is great, wasn't perfect for my installation, but as close as you can get! First of all my rails are 3"X2" so they were too wide to put the bolt and square washer on to hold. I drilled a hold and mounted it center on a downward angle iron, no issue. It's just a more solid mount now. Then the tire when mounted was rubbing on the top rail. Soooo I put a lock washer and an M12 nylon bolt to hold the tire mount bolts on. This added about 2MM of space out from the mount so the tire would not rub on the rail. Very happy with this solid solution. Additionally the weld on the mount is slightly not square. You can see this by the tire gaps front to rear. It is slightly skewed but not a problem. Hope this helps anyone else with wide rails. Enjoy! And thanks!

by:

Well, the spare tire carrier was on backorder for 4 months, but it was worth the wait. Easy to install. No problem meeting the 50 lbs. torque required as some reported. With the exception of a trailer tongue box which I have yet to purchase, this was the last element for this remodel of my father's 20 year old trailer.

by:

This spare tire carrier is perfect for installation on angle-iron railed utility trailers. The product was delivered on time and the directions were easy to follow. The entire installation took about 15 minutes.

I installed the device behind my trailer axle to add a little weight to the back end. This reduced the tongue weight for manual lifting and maneuvering of the empty trailer.

by:

It’s been a Year and this product is still working like a charm! Thankfully I haven’t had to take the spare tire off so I can’t comment on that part. I recommend just making sure You have tools in case you need to remove it. Great product!

by:

Product was as advertised and of good quality. Perhaps a little high in price, but then you often get what you pay for. Instructions were clear. The only issue I encountered was that the Angle Iron Attachment Bracket fits only 2” angle iron trailer rails. My trailer has 3” angle iron which required drilling a hole for the bracket’s carriage bolt. This wasn’t a major problem and in fact is a stronger attachment as it is through bolted rather than clamped. I realize most trailers are 2” angle iron, but think it should be pointed out that anything other than 2” angle iron may require adjustments or modifications. Otherwise completely satisfied with product, would recommend it. Only gave 4 stars in the hope that someone will read review and notify people in product description.

by:

Works great low profile spare was inside the edge of the fender I did put stronger mounting screws for my peace of mind but it would work with parts included.

  • What Size Wheel Does Spare Tire Carrier for Trailer with Angle-Iron Railing Carry
The Spare Tire Carrier for Trailer with Angle-Iron Railing # e99045 will only fit 12" to 15" wheels so it will not work with your10" wheel. While there isn't another spare tire carrier for an angle-iron railing, there is a good all-around option that will fit your tire and wheel, the CE Smith Spare Tire Carrier # CE27202. This is a locking spare tire carrier that comes with a padlock and works with 8" to 15" wheels so long as they have a 4 or 5 bolt pattern, which your 10" wheel should....

The bolts that come with the etrailer Spare Tire Carrier for Trailer with Angle-Iron Railing # e99045 are M12 size bolts which you could use a locking lug nut designed for that size with. Since that size is pretty rare a better option might be the part # e98892.
