Today were going to take a quick look at the Bulldog Collar Lock Coupler with pin part number bd028244. Now this is a weld on design so youre going to weld it directly to the tongue of your trailer coupler along the edge here and on the back. Its designed to be used with three inch trailer tongues. Well measure the inside width and again we get our three inches. Well also quickly measure our overall length and we get about 16 and a quarter inches. Now the coupler itself is made out of high strength steel so its very durable.
The collar lock system is a little bit different than typical trailer systems. The collar will slide back releasing this hinge and the socket opens up so you can get the ball in or out. To be able to release it the collar needs to slide back far enough so we need to remove our pin first. Theyve secured the pin to the coupler with a chain lanyard to make sure you dont lose it. With the pin out of the way we can slide our coupler down and this wedge here will release and swing open.
Theres the little hook here that will hold it open while you get the ball fitted into your coupler. Weve got a two inch trailer ball. Well fit it into place and then as we close the wedge the spring loaded collar will slide forward securing the wedge side around the ball. This provides a nice captive snug fit around the ball to insure that the trailer doesnt come undone. Once the balls engaged in place you can then re-insert your pin and secure it.
Thisll prevent the collar from coming back and releasing while youre trailering down the road. To release the ball well just reverse the process. Again the pins removed so we can slide our collar back. The wedge opens up and the ball is free. Thats it for a quick look at the Bulldog Collar Lock Coupler with pin part number bd028244..

I was having trouble finding a longer coupler to extend the tongue on my boat trailer and went online to locate what exactly I needed. After some frustration searching different sites, I found the perfect coupler on etrailer.com! It's been a year since I installed it and I'm happy to say it's still working perfectly! Highly recommend etrailer.com for difficult to find items for your trailer needs!
Don't waste your time with any other style coupler! Weld it on and never have to think twice about the security of the trailer connection. The only drawback that I can think of is that I had my trailer hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, and the design of the coupler is not conducive to that process (cannot be disassembled), so I had to paint it instead, but it is a small price to pay for having the extra piece of mind with a welded setup.
Have always used Bulldog hitches - over 30 years. Excellent product.
It should be a law that all trailers have bulldog type hitches. Over the years I have had two trailers come unhooked when I thought they were correctly hooked but instead were closed above the ball and not securely on the ball. More expensive but worth it!
Solid coupler a good company. The coupler doesn’t have any mechanism to assist in sliding the collar back but I welded on to nubs to pull it back with. I wanted several Master disk padlocks keyed alike but Etrailer could not get those for me so I went with a different online trailer co. that offered a six pack of them at a good price.
Easy To use
Installed new coupler on wheeled fish. I unhook and hook up a lot. Old style ball hitch was difficult to unhook, new style will just slip on and off without issue of getting caught. New ball hitch is also suppose to be the safest on the market. So far working perfect.
Found exactly what I was looking for on etrailer.com, received the hitch within 5 days of placeing the order. The Bulldog Collar will be a great replacement and improvement for the old coupler on the boat trailer.
The Bulldog coupler was as promised and advertised. I will use these couplers in an industrial setting, so high quality and timely delivery are very important to me. I found, however, that delivery was greatly improved by calling and talking to a person (thanks Rose) rather than depending on the online anonymity and predefined processes. Perhaps adding an optional field that defines "when a product is needed" can help. I will do business with "etrailer" in the future.
Great Product. Much better than the cheap couplers that come on the trailers offered on the market.
