Video Transcript for What to Know About the Dexter Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight Tongue Coupler for 2-1/2" hitch balls. It has a 21,000 pound weight capacity. This is perfect for your heavy duty towing needs. It's a rust resistant, extended length coupler, designed to be bolted onto trailer's tongue. The extended length will provide reinforcement for heavy duty towing. It has a nice zinc plating to it, which is corrosion resistant. It is a durable steel construction.

It does use the easy-to-use trigger style latch, you can see, to open it just like that. Then when you close it, it'll lock right into place. This is SAE J684 certified, and it is a bolt-on installation. This part is made in the U.S.A.Again, it's designed to fit a ball size of 2-5/16ths diameter. I happened to pull a hitch ball in that size just to show you how this would connect. You just pull your trigger latch all the way open, and you can drop that right on there.

Then if you release your trigger latch, you can see that it locks it right into place. Then to remove it, just pull open on your trigger latch, and you can take the ball right out. Again, the capacity on this is 21,000 pounds.Going to give you a few measurements on this. It is designed to fit a 3" wide channel tongue. Overall length from the edge here to the very back is 16-1/2".

The channel length section, which is here to here, is going to be right at 9-1/2". The height from the very bottom to the very top is going to be right at 4" tall. The overall width, from outside to outside, is going to be right at 3-5/8". The inside is right at about 3-1/8". On the mounting holes, the measurement center to center on the two smaller inner holes is 3".

On the two larger outer holes is 5" center to center. But that should do it for the review on the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight Tongue Coupler for 2-1/2" hitch balls, and it has a 21,000 pound weight capacity.

Excellent company, shipping, customer service, first of all!
Love the new 2-5/16" hitch coupler! Now I don't have to flip the ball when going between my band equipment trailer (lead guitarist in a rock/blues/country band), and the boat!!! I only used 3 bolts since my old surge brake hitch coupler only utilized two of the 1/2" bolts. I drilled the trailer for the 3rd rear/lower 1/2" bolt using schedule 8 yellow zinc bolts and hardware. SOLID!!!

etrailer.com for ALL your needs!!! I'll be converting and rebuilding the front axle brakes in the off-season. Already have the electro-hydraulic unit.

Fine

by:

Fit and finish outstanding! I am not an engineer but i would have like to see the bolt holes about 1/4in further apart. The lock washers and bolt heads are so close they touch the other bolt head.

If this was made to fit an existing hole pattern there is nothing you can do... Mine was a fresh tube install and that was my only problem.

Now I just have to reinstall the safety chains that were welded on.

Thanks much for the great part!

by:

Of course, none of the holes lined up. So me and "Macgyver" had our work cut out for us. In saltwater my old coupler lasted 15 years till it rusted so bad I was afraid it would break apart. So this time I painted it with the same non-skid paint that's on my aluminum boat deck. Some serious stuff. But first I cleaned it thoroughly, used primer, then the no-skid paint. I step on this coupler 200+ days a year with saltwater feet. This one was a lot more HD than my old one. A bit longer and just plain nicer over all. I hope now to get 20 more years out of this VERY expensive unit...reason for 'not' 5 stars. Dang almost $XXX when all said and done? That's A LOT! I KNOW, the shipping isn't cheap, but I am. Last year all new galv. rims and tires from etrailer and what a great deal that was! So, I guess I shouldn't complain, Okay, 4.75 stars, cuz no one is perfect.

AFTER USEAGE, ITS A PAIN. THE LATCH DOESNT SNAP OVER PERFECTLY EZ. IT SEEMS TO BE HANGING UP. MY OLD RUSTY SLID OVER THE BALL FINE, AND THE LATCH WENT DOWN FINE. THIS ONE DOESNT. I USUALLY HAVE TO PULL FORWARD, AND SLAM ON THE TRUCK BREAKS, AND THE TRAILER WILL ROCK BACK AND FORTH, AND THE LATCH WILL FINALLY FALL OVER ENOUGH TO ADD THE LOCK, THRU THE HOLES. ALWAYS A ADDITIONAL STEP!!

1 year after purchasing this trailer part its been working out great! Even with the high use and super salty Hawaiian weatherwater its been holding up fine and I feel it will hold up for a long time to come. I really made the right decision by ordering this from etrailer.com and am in the process of ordering a new heavy duty trailer jack to replace my exisiting one that has done its job for me and my boat over the past 21 years so it will be retired and put into light duty on a smaller carry all trailer so it is still being used and appreciated.Cant wait to get the new addition to my family from etrailer.com trailer jack Aloha!!

by:

I bought this to replace a tongue with a hydraulic brake system that was no longer in use due to an electric brake upgrade. It fit on the trailer with no problems. The holes matched right up. Its a good quality steel with a great finish. The only issue I have is the locking mechanism is very finicky and getting it to lock or unlock can be a chore. I am hoping it just needs to be broken in and will get smoother with use. Other than that its been a great replacement.

by:

Only place I found it. Had to modify to fit which worked out perfect. Was delivered in a couple days and makes it easier to have the same ball size on all the trucks. Expert company with great service

by:

Great product with excellent craftsmanship.
I
used it to replace a 2" ball bolt on coupler so all of my trailers are consistent.
The only minor complaint is the 1/2" holes are too close to the 5/8" holes, so when I put the washer on the 5/8" holes I was not able to drill the 1/2" holes unless I was to get creative and start grinding down washers for clearance.
Seeing as I mounted it on a trailer with a 7000# GVW and it will never come close to the 21000# rating. I feel confident in using just the two 5/8" bolts. The coupler it replaced only had two 1/2" bolts holding it on.

by:

I wanted both my trailers to have a 2 5/16 coupling to save keep changing tow balls. This item was perfect, it is very heavy duty and replaced the 2" coupling on my boat trailer without any further drilling. The locking mechanism is very good and positive. The price was great and the shipping was excellent, ordered on Monday, delivered on Wednesday. It doesn't get any better than that!

by:

Great product, I was tired of my trailers not all being 2-5/16" balls, so now I don't have to have different hitches on the trucks.

by:

Great product at a good price. Product would have gotten 5 stars if there wasn't a little area on one side where something messed up the finish (almost looks like a splotchy area that has some acid splattered on it?). Small area so I will live with it. Very nice heavy duty coupler.

I am still happy I bought this heavy duty coupler, BUT one thing... It is a little hard to get it to lock down on the ball it hangs up. We have an electric jack, so we play with up and down a little, and try to move the trailer back and forth a little, and it locks down - but it is finicky. Once locked down, I have total faith that it is there to stay though! It unlocks easily every time though, so thats good.

by:

First time with etrailer. Nice user friendly website. Badass trailer coupler destined for serious abuse towing a large boat over rough roads to remote, poorly maintained launch sites. Arrived ahead of schedule accompanied by a follow-up email. Thanks e-trailer
P.S. More trailer parts to be ordered soon! BD

by:

I used this coupler to replace the 2" coupler on a recently purchased tow dolly. My other trailers have 2 5/16" couplers and I preferred to commonize all towed units to eliminate any possibility of mis-applying a ball size. In addition, I like the security of an oversized coupling.

Works great

by:

Coupler works good and is nice and tight, so it won't rattle. It fit right up to the bolt pattern on the EZ loader trailer. Like the fact that the coupler fits over the trailer frame, instead of sitting on top. Less things to trip over, and looks better. Used this to get rid of the surge brake coupler after converting the trailer to electric over hydraulic brakes.

by:

Strong-sturdy and solid. would recommend for any two axle trailer.

Still works and looks like new, which is amazing since it is surrounded by salt air here in Hawaii.

by:

The trailer hitch works great on my cattle hauler, I no longer worry about becoming disconnected. Very good bargain on the cost.

by:

Top shelf products, excellent selection, awesome prices. Converting a tandem trailer to electric brakes, these guys had it all from bolt on coupler to the new drums! Love these guys!

by:

Once again I made a purchase from etrailer and I am very happy with the merchandise. Everything I have purchased from a trailer ball to more than one set of tires for multiple trailers has been well above average. Very fast processing of my order and the delivery.
The customer service is what really pushes my rating to a 5. Everyone is not only knowledgeable but great people who are always happy to help.
And no, I was not paid to give this review and I am a real customer.
Great company to do business with.

by:

Product was recieved on time and just as pictured in review. Installation was east with pre-drilled holes. Ordering was fast and easy and Etrailer representative handled all my questions quickly.
I will highly reccomend E-Trailer for trailer parts and needs.

  • How to Lock Out a Model 10 Actuator When Going to an Electric Over Hydraulic Setup
I spoke to my contact at Titan and he informed me that there really isn't a simple way to lock out the sliding portion of the Model 10 actuators. You would have to either weld the two portions of the actuator together or drill holes through them and bolt the pieces together. If the actuator is bolted to your trailer the best solution would be to go with the coupler part # T4853100 as this has the same bolt pattern and is a standard coupler. The Model 20 and 60 couplers can be easily locked...

The bolt pattern showing two slightly higher holes 3 inches on center and two slightly lower and larger holes 5 inches on center from each other is the proper bolt pattern. • Is Replacing the Surge Brake Coupler Required When Converting to EOH Brakes On a Boat Trailer
When converting from a surge braking system to an EOH system, you will want to have a fixed coupler. If you were to use the surge coupler as is without immobilizing, it can lead to rapid wear on internal parts because of the unassisted movement. Welding/bolting a surge coupler to immobilize it is not recommended either. This can damage the structural integrity of the coupler, leading to catastrophic failure. I recommend a fixed coupler like the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler...
