I am very disappointed with this product. Functionally the product works as intended but the exterior surface is covered with rust. It has not been exposed to salt water so the corrosion has to be a result of improper surface treatment. I had to remove the rust and paint the coupler with rustoleum paint to prevent further corrosion.
Comments
The coupler is shipped from the manufacturer with a shop oiled finish, which is a raw steel finish with a light coating of oil. The coupler is not plated, and will get surface rust if the oil is not reapplied regularly.

Great product! Will purchase again! Only negative is it came heavily taped and was super hard to get off the metal. Would recommend just using shrink wrap. I installed this on an existing trailer used to pull my kayaks. Never have had an issue with it.

Hitch trailer tongue arrived in a timely manner and at a reasonable price. I was particular happy at the quality of the product. I would have liked to seen some instructions on installation and adjustment but I believe I was able to figure it out. It would also have been nice to have two bolts for the installation.

It's a quality piece. That being said, I am at fault for not noticing that it is bare steel. Made to be painted. I now realize the picture is obvious and the description says it, but I wish it was in the title.

- Bolt Hole Pattern on Dutton-Lainson Model 970 and 980 Trailer CouplersWe do not carry the model 970 you referred to, but my representative at Dutton-Lainson tells me that although the part # DL13800 (which is their model 980) is a bit longer than the # DL13800, both use the same bolt hole pattern or layout. You should have no problem swapping out the couplers.

One advantage of a higher capacity coupler is that if you ever need or want to use it with something heavier than your current trailer, you will have it available.
