Built a kayak trailer using coupling. Welded up great and problem free for a year

I put this Coupler on a 2021 INTECH FLYER PURSUE CAMPER. The camper weighs only 1500lbs. On the first trip we headed to Maine from Massachusetts. Outside of Portland Me. we went over a small bump in the road were they were repaving the highway and the trailer came off of the ball. I pulled off the highway and and looked at the damage. All my electronic connectors were ripped off the camper when the tongue hit the pavement and it also bent the Fulton swivel jack. The Coupler was still in the locked position. I could not believe the damage. I put the trailer back on the ball and attached it with ratchet straps. We made it a few miles to a NAPA parts store. Thank God I had a tool box with me. We replace the coupler with a HEAVY DUTY Coupler from NAPA along with the electric connectors. Two hours later I was Back on the road. Before I install the new Coupler I compared it with the E Trailer one. They were night and day. DO NOT BUY THIS CHEAP COUPLER.

I hate to hear that you had such an experience with the coupler. We have heard of this happening before. We recommend making sure that the ball is fully seated in the coupler. It sounds like the new coupler is performing well for you.

by:

Great coupler. I swapped out the welded 1-7/8" (ball) coupler on the boat trailer my dad gave me as it was rusted and the latch needed to be replaced, and I already had a 2" ball mount. I considered buying a new ball mount with 1-7/8" ball for $30, but this just made more sense considering the poor condition of the original coupler and the simplification of only needing a 2" ball mount (standard size when renting U-Haul trailers for hauling landscaping dirt and rocks. Removing the welded coupler wasn't too difficult with a cutoff blade and grinding blade. Drilling the 1/2" holes took as long as cutting off the welded coupler. A definite upgrade for a better looking trailer and simplification of only needing one 2" ball mount.

Ya, I'm good! As I recall the items were: springs, wheel bearings, couplers and at least one jack. I was working on small boats and trailers. Bought and sold a few to get ahead enough so that I could keep one for myself, as the fruits of my labor. I'm not in need of any parts right now. Your website is saved to my desktop for future reference.

by:

I recieved my new 2" tongue to replace a 1 7/8" for my trailer as an update, as I have 2 other trailers that use 2". Came very quickly & thank you etrailer for such a great deal & transition online with Paypal !!!!!!!!!!!

We order multiple times a year, always excellent customer service!

by:

Both Products appear to be very good quality & long lasting! My Trailer is about 15 years old and had damage to the coupler. Adjustable wheel was in bad shape. Replaced both.

by:

Laid it on the tongue, marked the holes, drilled the holes, bolted the hitch on. Haven't had any problems!

by:

Just what I needed at a great price

by:

Easy website to find the things I needed. Timley shipping and ability to follow delivery progress.
Would not have a problem using them again for future purchases

by:

exactly as advertised

by:

It's OK except for the little locking pin on the chain. With the pin in place, the handle can be lifted almost all the way up. The tiny pin needs to be replaced with a heavier pin, bolt, or padlock.

I replaced the worthless latch pin with a latch lock.

by:

Product delivered was just what I ordered. I fits right and works great!
An issue developed with delivery. The UPS tracking page would not open for me. I had no idea if the package was seconded to USPS or what. Yesterday I finally went to the UPS store near me. They had the package for some time. The lady there told that others are complaining about the new UPS page requirements.

Anyway I have the coupler. I installed as soon as I arrived home. Installation took about two minutes!

Received this hitch within 3 days to So Cal. Installed it yesterday April 24th. It looks to be good quality, time will tell. Only thing is, I wish it was made in the USA. E-Trailer is awesome as always. God bless.

Still working great. Thank you etrailer. Jesus Saves!!

I changed my 1000 lb utility trailer from Harbor Freight from a 1-7/8 inch ball hitch to a 2 inch ball hitch to match my 2000 lb utility trailer's 2 inch hitch. Got tired of changing balls. Etrailer's 2 inch straight hitch was perfect with some minor modifications. I replaced all the old bolts with new grade 8 and also replaced the safety chain with a stronger one. It has worked great.

by:

Good quality. They don't specify the distance from the top of the channel down to the center of the mounting holes.
That distance is 1-1/4 inch for those who need to know.
It is not 1 inch as you would think for a 2 X 2 channel.

by:

Sample of 1
Hasn't worked since day 1.
Went on a utility trailer that gets limited use. Don't know if its the coupler or the components but will not latch to the hitch ball. Only somewhat worked twice, no corrosion or rust, watched all the tech videos to double check all checked out as it should have. Could be user error or POS product, no idea, lots of other good reviews though.

by:

Fit right on my trailer and now all of my hitches are 2”

Trailer coupler is very good quality. I've purchased products from here before and was very impressed with the customer service. I will continue to purchase from etrailer for life.

One year later and still working fine, good quality.

by:

I recently purchased a used 12’ alum. Boat and trailer. The trailer came with a 1-7/8” coupler. Everything that I tow is either 2” or 2-5/16”. This coupler will replace the old one on the boat trailer which is more heavy duty and more modern. Once installed it will be more user friendly than the old one.

by:

Got this for my small boat trailer as a replacement, now trailer can be locked to the truck. Fits the 2" ball much better no excessive movement when latched.

by:

Had trouble finding a direct bolt on 2" ball replacement for my old 1 7/8" ball coupler at any of our local providers. Etrailer's clear product descriptions at their online site made it easy to find exactly what I was looking for. Placed order - delivered in 4 days. Product was very well manufactured and nicely packaged. I no longer have to change hitch balls when I switch between my 2 trailers.

by:

I'm not too good at working electronic devices, so I'll thank you via this email. Your service was prompt and timely, the quality of your product, a 2 inch ball hitch was of good quality for the money. Installation was a snap. I won't know how dependable the hitch is until I arrive in Maryland without mishap, and we're leaving western Colorado on Monday. If I see my motorcycle trailer passing me on Rt. 70 I'll know the hitch failed. I don't think it will, though. I'd recommend etrailer to anyone who asks. Good products for the money... what else can you ask for??

by:

So easy to get these delivered to our rural doorstep and at the best price! I checked locally (within 100 miles) and no price was cheaper than this (not to mention not having to drive that far). Great product and service. Made a great finish to my homebuilt utility trailer.

by:

All four items I ordered for a boat trailer were all very quality items. The fenders
were exactly as described which was important to the fit of the trailer. The jack,
winch, and tongue coupler all exceeded my expectations for quality. I will never
shop elsewhere for my truck and trailer needs. Thank you etrailer!

  • What Does 2" or 3" Channel Mean For Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler
I believe you were referring to in general what does a 2" or 3" channel mean since you didn't reference any specific coupler, but a 2" or 3" channel is simply the width of the your trailer tongue the coupler attaches to. For example the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z fits a 2" wide trailer tongue and the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM15000-52 fits a 3" wide trailer tongue. I have added a link below to our entire selection of straight tongue trailer couplers for...

  • Replacement 2" Ball Coupler Options For A 2" Wide Trailer Tongue
Demco unfortunately doesn't have an EZ-latch coupler for a 2" wide channel so you're left with three options: etrailer # CT-3001-Z (3-1/16 bolt hole spacing) Curt # C82CR (3" bolt hole spacing) Dutton-Lainson # DL13835 (3" hole spacing) Of the three options the Curt # C82CR is going to be the easiest to use since it just has a 1/2" diameter hitch pin to slip through the coupler and lock the ball in place. The only other option would be to have some 1/2" steel plates added to the...

  • Repair Kit Recommendation for a Dutton Lainson 2 inch Trailer Coupler
Based on your description it sounds like your trailer has the Dutton Lainson Coupler part DL13835 and the correct repair kit would be the part # DL13970 that you referenced. That coupler has been discontinued so your other option is to replace it with # CT-3001-Z.

  • Replacement Coupler for Crux Expedition Off-RoadTrailer
Whatever you do, there's going to be some fabrication required here, and there's not going to be an A-frame coupler that will fit your trailer judging by the photo. You could weld on a steel tube to the front and install something like the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler - Trigger Latch - Zinc - 2" Ball - Bolt On - 3,500 lbs Item # CT-3001-Z. What I think might be the better solution for your Crux Expedition trailer (which are really cool!) would be a Lock N Roll articulating coupler setup....

  • Coupler For 2" Trailer Channel That Connects to a 2" Hitch Ball
The etrailer Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z and Curt QuickPin No-Latch Trailer Coupler # C82CR are currently the only 2" ball couplers we carry that fit a 2" square trailer channel. Bulldog's smallest coupler only fits a 3" channel.

The Trailer Coupler for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailers # Y08123 was designed specifically for Rack and Roll 78 inch # Y08107 or 66 inch # Y08106. If you were looking for a coupler for your trailer and have a 2" wide trailer tongue I recommend the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z, which works with a 2" ball, has a 3,500 lb capacity and bolts on. • Replacement Coupler vs. Coupler Repair Kit
Since you want to sell the trailer, and since the current coupler is a bolt-on type, I suggest you replace the coupler with a new one. You add an appealing "selling feature" to your trailer (the brand new coupler) and one like 2-inch # CT-3001-Z (for 2-inch wide channel) or # CT-3003-Z (for 3-inch wide channel) will cost you LESS than the repair kit.

You'd have to swap out the coupler as there isn't a way to convert a hand wheel latch to a trigger style coupler. For example you'd want the part # CT-3001-Z if you have a 2 inch channel and a 2 inch hitch ball.

For your 2 inch tongue the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler - Trigger Latch - Zinc - 2" Ball - Bolt On - 3,500 lb # CT-3001-Z is my recommendation. Then I'd use the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 2" x 3" Trailer Tongue - Bolt On - Up to 5,000 lbs # FHDPB230101 with a welded on spacer for your trailer tongue. We do not carry the actual length of tongue metal. If you don't need a folding tongue then you can use a sleeve even one like # 337RT255812 to weld over the tongue to strengthen...

  • Replacement Trailer Coupler for 2 inch Hitch Ball
It would depend on the measurements of your trailer's tongue to find an exact fit. One of our most popular couplers, # CT-3001-Z, is 10-3/4 inches long by 3-1/2 inches wide and is for 2 inch trailer tongues. The mounting holes are 1/2 inch diameter holes spaced 3-1/16 inches apart on center.

  • What Hardware is Needed to Install Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z
I pulled the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler, # CT-3001-Z, from our warehouse and the installation instructions state that you should use 1/2 inch diameter, grade 5 bolts and locknuts to mount this coupler to the trailer tongue. They said that it is acceptable to use 4 separate bolts or two long bolts passing through all four holes. You can also add two bolts to the top holes for extra strength.

  • Are There Any Replacement Parts for a Shelby Trailer Coupler
I do have an option but Shelby Trailer Products went out of business years ago so replacement parts are just not an option. Therefore, you will need to cut the old coupler off and then bolt-on a new one for which I recommend the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler part # CT-3001-Z. This will be your only option. The process is actually easier than you think as all you will really need is an angle grinder to get the old one off and a drill to install the new one.

  • Recommended Trailer Tongue Size for use with Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z
Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z requires a 2 inch wide tongue but I recommend a boxed tongue and not C-channel so there is more support where it counts. Steel tubing at least 1/8 of an inch of wall thickness will do the trick. The length can be pretty much whatever you want but the longer the tongue the lower the tongue weight capacity will be.

That would be harder to find since the couplers with the smaller ball size are typically on much lighter duty trailers. Would it be easier to swap to a different hitch ball? Or if you have another trailer with a 1-7/8 inch ball already maybe a dual ball setup like the # 3371803210?

You need to know what channel size and the weight capacity you will need for the new coupler. The most common sizes are the 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch channels. Coupler, # CT-3001-Z , can be used if you have a 2 inch channel and a weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. If you need a coupler for a 3 inch channel, the Fulton # F343000301...
