Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • What Tire Chains and Tighteners do You Recommend for My 2017 Ford F-350 with 275/70-18 Tires?
From the sound of your question, I assume you meant the # PW3029C instead of "TC3029C." Also, it sounds like you have size 275/70-18 tires on your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty (single rear wheel). Per the Ford user's manual, I recommend only using Class S approved accessories. With that being said, if you want better traction and grip, I always recommend going with tire chains over cables. For this reason, I recommend the Titan Chain Cable Snow Tire Chains - Ladder Pattern - Steel Rollers...

  • Recommended S Class Tire Chains for a 2016 Ram 1500 w/ 275/60 R20 Tires
The clearance in your 2016 Ram 1500's wheel wells really limits your options. The best chains for 275/60 R20 tires are going to be the Glacier Cable Tire Chains item # PW3029C. These are class S chains that will give you good traction in both light snow and ice. The low profile construction will provide a smooth ride and you can add the rubber adjusters item # PW97 to ensure the cables remain properly seated on the tires. I have linked an installation video below to help you get these...

  • Low-Profile Cable Tire Chains For 2022 Ram 1500 With 275/70R18 Tires
There is a Class S compatible cable tire chain that fits the 275/70R18 tires on your 2022 Ram 1500, from Glacier chains: - Glacier Cable Tire Chains # PW3029C These require 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall (or any other obstruction) and your truck, and 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and your wheel well. To ensure they have a consistently snug fit I highly recommend tensioners, the Glacier Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners for 16" to 19" Rims # PW105.

  • Can 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with 275/50R22 Tires Use Tire Chains?
I checked out the owner's manual for your 2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 and it mentions that your size tire will not allow for enough clearance to safely use tire chains. Also the factory tire size was 275/50R22, and I can't find any options at all for a 275/55R22 tire for chains. If you really have a 275/55R22 I do not have an option for you. If you choose to ignore the manufacturer's recommendations the # KON44FR will fit your tire, but you'd be liable for any damage caused should you...

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for LT275/70-18 Tires
I've linked to our selection of chains that are a fit for 275/70-18 tires. The best chain option for you will depend on your vehicle itself (some vehicle owner's manuals call for certain types of chains for certain tire sizes because of clearance issues) your budget, and how often you'll find yourself in situations where you'll need to use them. As a first step, consult your owner's manual to see if your vehicle manufacturer has any specific advice or prohibitions regarding tire chain...

  • What Class S Tire Chains do You Recommend for My 2021 Ford F-150 with 275/60-20 Tires?
As with all tire chains, it is always good to go with the recommendations outlined in the owner's manual when it comes to your size 275/60-20 tires on your 2021 Ford F-150. With that being said, the # TC3029 and # PW3029C will provide a little bit of traction to your BF Goodrich tires. If your owner's manual recommends against self-tensioners like the ones on the # KON24FR, it is better to find an alterative with no self-tensioner. At the end of the day, the Konig Snow Tire Chains - Diamond...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for a 2023 Ram 1500 w/ 275/55/R20 Tires
I wouldn't mess with cables. They don't last as long and chains provide far better grip. For your 2023 Ram 1500 with 275x55xR20 tires, I recommend the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains w Cams item # TC2828CAM. These chains feature V-bar studs that will give you superior traction and the ladder pattern will assist with starts and stops in the snow. The included cam tighteners let you easily adjust the fit for a simple installation. I have linked a video below showing these chains being installed....

For your 275/70R18 tires, I recommend the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - Square Link - 1 Pair # TC2533. This is great quality chain that has built in adjusters. If you are concerned about internal clearances then you may want to consider a Class S chain like the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PW3029C. These cable style chains are best used with a tensioning device like the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters # PW105.

For your 2015 GMC All Terrain, because you have a lift leveling kit and larger tires, the manufacturer specs we often go by not the same, but I recommend checking your owners manual anyway. For the best traction, I recommend the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners - Square Link - Reversible - 1 Pair # PWE3231SC for your 275/60r20 tires. These links are 5.6 mm thick. If you are needing Class S compatible tire/snow chains for 275/70-18 size tires on your 2014 Ford F-250 then I recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW3029C because the rollers are more like coils and will do a better job at giving you traction over the smooth rollers. You can use tensioners like part # PW100 or # PW105 to help keep them in place. Be sure to consult your owner's manual for any specific instructions on tire chains for your F-250 as well.

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for 2016 Toyota Tundra with Tire Size 275/70R18
The final authority on tire chains for a vehicle is the owners manual. I checked the online copy of the manual for your 2016 Toyota Tundra and it states you can use chains but the side chain thickness has to be less than 5 mm and the section that goes above the tire has to be less than 6.3 mm. So for your tire size of 275/70-18 you'd want to go with a cable set like the Glacier V-Trac part # PW3029C which would give you the needed clearance.

Ultimately though if you already have the other chains you can do a test fit on the Armada tires to determine if they are going to work or not.
