Installation

Installation Step 1

1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.

Installation Step 2

2. Connect the yellow and blue cable at the back of the tire.

Installation Step 3

3. Push the cable into place behind the tire and center the cross chains on the tire's tread. Then, on the front side of the tire, join the 2 ends of the yellow side chain using the green hook.

Installation Step 4

4. Feed the silver draw chain with the rubber tensioner through the red channel at the bottom and pull it tight. Then run the tensioner through the red rings. (Note: Depending on your tire size, you might not be able to thread through both rings.) Pull the tensioner across the tire and fasten it to the yellow chain on the opposite side.

Installation Step 5

5. Pull your vehicle forward and retighten the chain.

Class "S" Designation

SAE Class "S" tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class "S" chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2021 Ford F-150

I bought these for a '21 F-150 4x4 which requires S class chains for the front wheels (very poor decision by Ford!). Admittedly having to go to the lightweight class S chain limits options but whoever designed this rube goldberg operation never put chains on a truck with P275/65R18 tires and certainly never drove with them on. The mounting instructions are pretty straight forward and the chains go on quickly but the tightening arrangement is a joke and the chain will slap the body at anything more than a 1-2 mph crawl since the "tightener" leaves the chains VERY loose when installed per the instructions. You could probably remove a few links from the tightener but their pretty lightweight to begin with and you might have trouble getting the end piece securely connected back to the remaining links. You will definitely need to apply a set of traditional 5-6 point tighteners (I like the rubber ones versus the metal spring ones since they don't ice up) to make these chains work. I also think it will be very difficult to unhook the inside rubber loop of this chain set once you get a bit of snow and ice packed on it but I haven't had a chance to try that yet. I have purchased chains from etrailer.com for years and they have always had top notch products...until now. Perhaps these fit better on a larger tire but not on these factory 18" Michelins. On the plus side the delivery from etrailer was very fast.

Comments
This sounds pretty frustrating. You do have to run the tensioner through at least one of the red rings. Pull the tensioner across the tire and fasten it to the yellow chain on the opposite side. You can also purchase something like item # TCMA2

Got into some deep snow in the mountains on a narrow, icy forest service road and accidentally slid my truck off the road and into a ditch while trying to turn around. After shoveling and installing these chains on all four tires, I drove back onto the road in 4High and got turned around with no issues. No problems driving with them the rest of the day as the snow storm continued. Moral of the story- don’t be dumb and put chains on before things get bad.

These tire chains fit the tire and rim well once everything was properly tightened. Picture directions for installation are easy to follow (be sure to practice once in your driveway when weather is good). I personally prefer the diamond pattern because you always have chains contacting the ground. All of that plus no issues so far I am giving 5 stars, but note I have not used these on compact ice on paved roads; only for snow and ice on gravel/dirt roads.

2017 Ford F-150

Installed on a 2017 F150 with 275/55/R20 wheels. These chains were very easy to install and watching the installation videos were very helpful. The carry case is perfect and is very compact so it doesn't take up much room in your truck cab and can fit nicely under the rear seat. It comes with a replacement chain link hitch so in case one breaks you have a backup. It would be nice to have two thought. Either way, I look forward to my trip to Boone NC winter and if I have to use the chains, I will be back to write a second review on how they worked out.

Toyota 4Runner

While I have not yet been able to actually use the tire chains that I purchased I can say that the product seems to be well made and I cannot really say that have found anything that I find less than I was hoping for.

That said, I am really writing this review to attest to the service that I received from e-trailer. From my initial call to get help selecting the proper chains for my 4Runner to a minor issue that I had later, the company has been nothing by kind, professional, and service oriented. I definitely recommend working with them.

Although the product was excellent, the case it came in was sent knowingly damaged. One of the handle straps is totally missing and the other is half torn off. Can't believe this was sent in this condition.

First .... customer service is great. I needed the chains for a trip to Northern MN. , planned on leaving on Saturday ... they were ordered on Wednesday with 2 day service. The chains arrived the next day around 1300 hrs., were well packaged, and the case for the chains is well made. Now the fun part installation. I have "baby mud" tires ... the chains don't easily slide over the surface ... not a big deal, it just takes a little longer to center the chains. However, the next issue started to annoy me. The tension chain was too long. Was I centered properly? I adjusted chain again ... still too loose. Back to the video. You can pickup some of the slack by the link that attaches to the green hook. Ok ... better, but still too loose. Back to the product reviews. I was not alone .... the fix (per mfg) was simple and now obvious. Loop the tension chain over the yellow chain once (you're simulating another red hoop) and the attach the tension chain. Readjust after driving a short distance. I'm sure they will perform well ... the test willl be snow covered looging roads. The one thing I suggest is to put them on in good conditions .... better to resolves any issues in a nice enviroment.

After a few days in Yosemite I would highly recommend this snow chain. It is very easy to put on and take off. The design is well thought out.

Pros - well made, very easy to put on and take off, performed very well in heavy snow

Cons - will shift over time that will require re-tensioning

I would recommend getting the add on tensioner so that the chains are equally held in place. I've seen others used bungee cords.

by:

I can put these on in under 2 minutes per tire without having to drive the vehicle over the chains. Also a very nice carrying package. I purchased these as backup in the event of slippery conditions when hauling a 24' ice house of the lake. Have not had to use on the ice yet, but I did practice putting them on the tire to avoid learning curve on ice.

I really like the service I get from e-trailer. The chains are easy to put on and it seems like a good system. They seem a little light duty but I haven't had to use them yet on road. I will have to see how they wear on highway. Time will tell.

They are certainly not as aggressive as regular chains. I’m just hoping they will get me unstuck in the mountains of Montana when I really need them!

So far, so good. I carry these when I go off-roading in snowy months in the PNW. Super easy to put on and GREAT carrying case with the instructions right *there*. I haven’t had to use these yet and will review again once I do!

by:

The vehicle and tire chain I received look great. (No snow, yet, haven't tried them on). But, I have been purchasing from Etrailer and their personal assistance is on the remarkable side these days. Real people talk to you if you have a question. Imagine that!! The tire chains arrived right on time (I was worried, we were getting ready to leave for snow country in our RV) so I am a happy camper. Thanks, etrailer.

These chains are great and a perfect fit for our two suburbans. I transferred them to the Bucket Boss cable case and the fit in there perfectly with room to spare. This keeps each chain separated and free of entanglement in the original case.

I had been using the Z cables but there is a little more work in storing and maintaining. As well, I felt that the cables were more prone to breaking so I am happy to have found these chains to replace them.

We do have a nice selection of chains and cables that are designed to fit the LT285/70R17 size tires on your Ram. • Using Tire Chains with Snow Tires
Tire chains can be used on standard as well as snow tires. Driving above 30 or so mph with chains installed is not recommended, nor is using chains on dry pavement. So, if you are planning on driving above 50 mph, you are most likely traveling on bare pavement and would therefore want to remove the chains.
