V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over both tires of your dual-tire setup, making sure that the center chain is between the tires and that the V-bars are facing out. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution.

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Use the cam tensioning devices to tighten. Do this by inserting the flat end of the included wrench into the slot on each cam and twisting it.

5. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Cams Review - 2022 Ram 3500

Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we'll be taking a look at these Titan chain snow tire chains with V-bars and cams for your dual tires right here on our 2022 Ram 3500. So, if you're expecting a lot of extreme weather, you're expecting a lot of snow, especially a lot of ice, and you need that extra traction on the road, that's what these tire chains are for. And there's two different types. You can get this with the V-bars, with or without the cams. So, the cams are just gonna make it a little extra easier to get the right tension for you.

And we'll talk about how to install it onto your two tires. Now, when you make tire chains, there's usually two different types of tire chains. There's gonna be your ladder-style chains and your diamond pattern chains. These are gonna be your ladder-style chains, which means to install them, you are gonna have to drive over them or go behind your tire to make your connection. So, just keep that in mind.

It may be a little bit trickier. But since you have these V-bars, you're also gonna have that extra traction on the road 'cause they bite into that ice. So, these are the V-bars. Other people call them cleats or studs. Either way, they give you that extra traction on the road beyond what your twist chains would.

Now, these work together. They have or they are made of a low-carbon steel. And that means that they are designed for extra durability for those extreme situations. So, if you do find those chains that are made of low-carbon steel, you know that they are designed to stand up to extreme rocks or ice that you may run into, but they aren't as corrosion-resistant as some of your chains made of the manganese nickel alloy. So, if you want to use these for multiple seasons, just double-check your tire chains before use to make sure that they are not rusted or broken.

So, these are installed on tire size 235/80R17. If you're not sure what tire size you have, you can find them printed on the side wall. I also have them installed on our rear tires. Now, knowing your tire size is gonna be very helpful because if you use our etrailer.com fit guide, at the top of the page, you just put in your vehicle, and then you can select your tire size and then get the best fit for you. So, make sure you get the right tire chains for you and for your different situations. If you have all of that ice, you definitely need that extra traction that these cleats can provide. If you have more of a snow and an ice situation and you don't need that traction, we have versions of these tire chains without the V-bars that you might be a bit more interested in. Now, when your chains arrive, they're gonna arrive in two of these bags. One for each side. So, this is going to be a reusable bag. Although, I would use a rubber tie or a zip tie to secure it once your chains are gonna be inside. You do have the instructions printed on the back or you could watch this video where I show you how to do it. So, you're gonna have this tool included, which is used to tighten down the cams. What's not included, but I highly recommend adding on, are going to be these rubber tensioners. Also, we have a tire chain safety install kit that has a rubber mat as well as lights, and don't forget to use your gloves because your truck and/or the chains can be kinda sharp as you install it. Now, the install process was a little bit involved, especially since you had to wrap these around both tires and you do have to crawl underneath your truck in order to make the connections in the back. But since the truck has a good amount of space, it wasn't the worst install process. So, definitely doable, but I do recommend practicing first. Now, let's take a look at that process. So, before setting up your tire chains, what I do recommend is, pretty much the moment they arrive, please set them out in your garage and just double-check to make sure everything looks good and then get familiar with the process of putting on your tire chains. That way, you know how to do it before you're stuck by the side of the road. These are dually tire chains, so you are gonna have two different bags. So, one for each side. So, it's gonna look like this. And then we're gonna load this up or install this on our driver's side. So, make sure your tire chains are facing the right way. And there's two things to look out for. One, are going to be the V-bars. You definitely wanna make sure the V-bars are facing away from your tire. Another thing to look for is going to be your hooks. See how you have a hook on this side and a flat portion on the other side, you want that flat portion on your tire. So, I currently have the flat portion facing the ground, and that's gonna make it easier for me to grab the chains by the middle and lift them onto the tire. So, this is gonna be a little trickier since you do have two tires. So, before we go to the second tire, just make sure it's even on each side, and then you continue to put the chains onto your back tire. On one side, you're gonna have three hooks. So, two of them are gonna look like these, like levers. And then you have a middle hook, which is going to be your center piece. So, we are gonna want to connect this center hook over to the chains on the other side. And once that middle hook is connected, you may have to drive forward to reach it. Go ahead and connect the front and the back. Let's start with the back lever. So, we're gonna get this link connected to this lever. And we're gonna get as tight as a fit as we can right off the bat. I'm gonna put it at round the third link. So, just bring that through and then bring that back towards the front. And you also have this cam tool, which you can use to tighten down the cams to get a tighter fit. So, here at the front, we're gonna do the exact same thing. You're gonna bring the lever through. I do recommend pulling on the chain, just to help you out. And then twist the lever forward and secure it with this extra link. And then you're gonna get your cam buckle tool. You can see it in the front, let's turn this and get that nice and tight fit. So, of the one, two, three, four cams, I only had to adjust two before I got a really good fit here. But for extra security, I do recommend using these rubber adjusters. That way, as you drive around, your chains are going to adjust as you hit those rocks and hit that ice. So, this will help you out with keeping a constant tension as you drive. Now, for our bigger truck here, if you do have those beefier tires, you may wanna consider getting the tensioners for your heavy trucks. Just check out our product pages to get the one to match. Do this exact same thing on the other side, if you are driving over your chains, in order to make those connections then do them both at the same time. And once they're all installed, then I personally recommend driving forward or backward a couple feet. And then double-checking that everything is still in place 'cause that would be the perfect time to adjust to cams if necessary. After that, you're ready to hit the road because you are done with the install. But this right here was a look at our Titan chain snow tire chains with cams and V-bars right here on our 2022 Ram 3500..

Just put the 4821 dually chains with cams on my truck and I'm impressed with the ease of installation. Tested them out on an icy hill and snow on top too...AWESOME CHAINS! They look as though they'll hold up well.
Thank you Nicole R. at etrailer for your assistance. ;)

To the unfamiliar don’t wait till your stuck to put the chains on. Some of us are slow learners, just saying. The dual tire chains known as “ triples” are tuff to connect the center chain. However the cam lock tighteners are the way to go. I’m 62 and living in Maine. I’ve used tire chains every winter plowing snow or traveling to my favorite ice fishing spot. These chain are superior because of the v bar cross links and the cam lock tightener. I wish they had been available years ago! Highly recommend but don’t take my word on it. Try them on for your vehicle you won’t regret it!

I got these ice breaker snow chains for my tow truck - I pull a large fifth wheel and plan to travel the country - During the winter when traveling from New England to the southwest "With The Other Sun Birders" - I need to be prepared for any ice or snow storm to get myself safely off the road in an emergency - This is cheep insurance and would not feel safe without the capability of getting myself to a safe place to wait the storm out - Your service was good, when my package came it only have one side - I called and you quickly sent the other side -

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

They are nice chains, and they arrived very quickly, so I'll give 1 star for that despite the fact they don't come with a reuseable bag. But the other 4 stars come off because they don't actually fit the tire sizes they indicate they fit. My tires are 265/75-16 on a 2006 Chevy 2500HD. I installed the chains, using the closest link available for the inside and outside catch, then cycled all four cams, and the chains are still too loose. In fact, I could cycle the cams by hand, and didn't even need to use the special tool, that's how loose they are. You can clearly see in the included picture how much slack there is at the keeper since it's hanging lose instead of taunt against the tire like is should be. You can also see that it is connected to the closest link, and that all four cams are tightened. You can even make out the tire size. This isn't an installation problem, or an operator error. This is a "they don't fit what they say they fit" problem. I tried calling etrailer for assistance, but other than verify I had the correct chains for my tire size, all they could do was suggest I get the rubber bungee cord things.

So now I have the outside rubber things coming to try and take up the slack if I actually need to use them during my trip next week. Tire chains specified for a given tire size range should fit. These don't, but I don't have enough time to change them out and have no confidence anything else I ordered would fit better anyway. Later when I have time, I'll remove one of the laterals so I can tighten the chains more, but for $150 I would expect a product that fits. Buyer beware...

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. There can be differences in how a chain will fit on a certain tire size depending on the tire manufacturer. A tire made by Goodyear in a 265 75 R16 size will be slightly different then the same size made by Kenda for example. We always recommend using a set of rubber adjusters with these chains to ensure a snug fit. If your rim size is 14 to 24 then we recommend part # TCMA2

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Had some trouble at first, the set was too large for my tires. I was able to remove one of the cleats and shorten the diameter... All is well now, hope I never have to use them, but nice to know I can.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

These chains work great and look better. We were driving to a trailhead where the road turned into deep hard snow with 1.5 foot deep ruts. We couldn’t proceed because of downed trees. The snow was hard enough that the truck got stuck in 4WD low because it kept digging itself in. Thank goodness I had the chains because once I put them on I was able to grip and turn around with no issue.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Boc arrived wet, see pics. Working w Ellen regarding the chains (maybe) being too long. Have to connect to the next crossover in order for them to be tight enuf to stay on) & yes all cams are shortened. Chain excess would slap against the vehicle

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

2 words, Heavy Duty. I haven't gotten to use them yet and hope I never will. But preparing for a hunt, I knew I better have some that fit my truck. I have had chains for all of my rigs before and no stranger to having to chain up. And these appear like they will not disappoint should I have to throw iron.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

I purchased a set of these chains before last winter and used them to get into my hunting camp in snowy and icy conditions. They went on easy and with the cams, fit very tight. I didn't even use the tensioners that I purchased with them. I purchased another pair this year to have for the front if I ever needed them (it's pretty remote where I use them). Great product and great customer service!
