What's up everybody, Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Bestop Supertop truck bed cover. So all you gotta do is, go on our fit guide to get the right one for your specific truck. But this one is really unique because it's kinda like a tonneau cover, but you get a little bit more height to it, so you can stack more stuff in it or you can just use this as your camping rig. So you will have two different options. You can either choose to get the windows all the way around, or you can grab some, that will just have the window in the back.
It's all up to you and just check out our website and use our fit guide to find the right one for you. This is kind of a unique product. Well, I'm tryna figure out what we're gonna compare it to. Well, one, it's kinda like a tonneau cover 'cause it protects the stuff on the inside, but it's taller and it's kinda like a tent. Like the Right line Gear tent but you can drive with it but it's pretty much a camper shell.
But the cool thing about this is, it's gonna be a lot easier to live with than your normal camper shell, because one, you're gonna have to have multiple people, lift it up to take it off and you gotta store it somewhere. With this it can stay on there, but we can condense it down. So I would definitely say, it is probably one of the most versatile things you can put on the bed of your truck. Comparing this to a normal camper shell. I would definitely say that, I think the normal camper shells are gonna be a little bit more water tight, but I'm not saying that the seals are lacking.
We have plenty of seals here. So one, we have one in the tailgate. So, it's a nice big rubber seal. So I don't think that's gonna really leak and all the zippers are hidden by about an inch and a half to two inches of overhang. So I don't really think that's really gonna leak, but we we're kind of reading what you guys we're saying about the cover and a lot of the times you just saw a little bit of water kinda creep in through the sides, but there is a seal down there as well.
So this might leak a little bit, but I don't really think that the seams are lacking. I just think it's just not a fiberglass camper shell. But as far as this thing being solid, it's ridiculously solid. The material is pretty much what you see on Jeep, so it's real thick, canvasy type materials. So this gonna be really strong. And the cool thing about it is, the way it's kinda laid out, when you set it up, it stretches it really, really tight. So it's not really flimsy and I'm literally, you know, moving it as much as I can and it's moving the truck. So don't think that this is gonna be some little chintzy thing, that's gonna be flapping around like crazy. This thing is actually pretty solid. All of the windows are gonna have a nice glued seal all the way around and they are tinted on the outside. We are gonna have one window, that's not gonna be tinted and that's on the inside, so you'll be able to still look out the back of your cab and see whatever's in there, so that doesn't need to be tinted, right. So I thought that was pretty cool. So let's go ahead and just pull this out, like this, and then we can zip this up, so I can show you that window, that's not tinted. Which I kinda like that. So then you can see all the contents. .of the cab right back there. So it's not tinted or anything and I'm glad that they put a window back here. 'Cause I was afraid that they weren't and then the water is gonna get into it, but they did and I like it. Just to reiterate, this thing is super solid. So, the way we have it all tensioned up, I really like the mechanism, which is over here. So you just have a little channel to slide through. So once you kinda get it all down, you sit there and you push this through, it has a couple different grooves and it really gets it extremely tight. So just kinda moving this thing around, like it really, I mean, if you really want me to hang on, I can, but it's solid. I mean, I'm really, really impressed with it. I do like how on the inside of the canvas, it's not black like the outside because it kinda helps illuminated in here. So with our little bed rug that we have in here, kinda makes it a little bit darker compared to just the white walls. So having the lighter canvas is nice, but I would probably get a couple lights in here, just to kinda light the place up a little bit. Comparing it to a tonneau cover, we're gonna get a lot more bed space, that's cover. So from the top of the rails to the very top, we're adding a little over two foot, which is pretty much more so doubling the capacity. So if you have just a lot of bulky stuff, going on a long trip or you just keep a lot of taller toolboxes in here, it's gonna be really nice and something that a tonneau cover won't let you do. But it does install kinda the same way as the tonneau cover. You just have these rails right here and then you just have the clamps. Whatever the case may be in your situation, we can roll this up to where it's kind of out of the way. So what we have to do though, is we're gonna have to take this little rail and slide it all the way out. We are gonna have to find a place to store this, but luckily we have a truck! So just throw it in the bed, and then what we wanna do is, we're gonna go ahead and just roll this up, or it be easy to do from the inside, roll it up. We're gonna have a little elastic bands, just like this to secure it and get it out of our way. Once we get it all rolled up, you just take it, Those go around the edge like this, this is not that heavy. So it doesn't need a whole lot. Well, that's all you gotta do. So if it's a nice day out, we can go ahead, just have this rolled up and we could drive with it like this if we wanted to. And it doesn't take a whole lot of time to just put it back down and zip, zip and we're good, pretty simple thing. Whether you just wanna just have this thing rolled up or you want to condense this down, we're gonna have to remove all the windows. You just take this. It's gonna be just. .it's fairly simple. We are gonna have to find a place to store the windows. So you wanna store them in a nice, safe place. Easiest way to take this window off is from the inside. So you just slide it and as you're sliding it, you're kinda bending it on my left hand side and then store this in a safe place. And then for the slides we wanna undo our zippers and then we're gonna have all these seals, that we had such a fun time with before. we're gonna have to just undo all of this and get everything disconnected and stored away somewhere. There we go. To make it a little bit easier to get the rest of the canvas off. I'm gonna release some tension, which I gotta do, is kinda just push back a little bit, lift that up, oh yeah. That's gonna make it a lot easier, do that on both sides. And now this will just come off so much easier than before. Just like that. And the same thing for the driver's side too. This is the easy part, we just gotta gently let her go back then she should just kinda condense down all nice. I might have to get in there and situate it a little bit. Let me get it to where it folds the way you want it to fold. Actually, as of right now, even though this side's a little higher than the other, so as of right now, we're still below the backs of our back seats. So we're not really obstructing our view at all, which is cool. And we also have these little straps right here, that we gonna wrap around and clip in right here. It's pretty tight, which is good. Just clip that in. After we do our last strap, which is this, and this is kinda cool. So what we wanna do is wrap it around, I'm gonna put it into this slot, I found it best to go down here and get it facing up on the other side like that, Slide it in, she's locked into place. That's just a little added protection. We do have one of these on both sides. For you Fifth wheel or Gooseneck haulers in the very center right here, where all our hauling stuff is gonna be. It's only adding or taking away about, like, four inches from the bulkhead. So, I would say it's safe to say, that you can still maybe Gooseneck and Fifth wheel haul with this, but if it doesn't work for you, if you look down at the bows, follow this, follow this, there we go. This right here, we can just pull these pins and we can remove these just with our hands. You just go ahead and pull these out and then we can take this whole entire thing off and we're gonna just keep the rails. So it's not really limiting your truck at all. all in all, I think this is for a lot of different types of people. Me personally, I like camping out of my truck. So it's gonna be a really cool option to have a covered sealed place, to be able to go on camping trips. So I don't want to have anything behind me, so I could really go deep into the woods. If you are one that just kinda looking for a camper shell, this gonna be a lot easier to store. this gonna be a lot easier to put on and take off. This is a one man show, with camper shells typically it isn't and then for the tonneau cover people. If you need to cover some of the stuff in your bed, this is gonna give you twice as much coverage. So for you Fifth wheel owners, if you have a Fifth wheel, that doesn't stay underneath the rails, this is gonna be a great solution for ya. All in all, this is gonna be a lot easier to store than your camper shells and also it's gonna be one that you can drive with it. So if you we're to compare it to like a Right line Gear tent, you can't drive with that. You can keep this on there all the time and all you need is a mattress, which we sell them. So I think this is gonna be a really cool, unique thing to put on your trucks, just so we can do a little bit more. And that's pretty much it for a look at the Bestop Supertop truck bed cover..

Built to last and easy to use, the Supertop collapses to store behind the cab and allows unrestricted access to the bed. The kit includes a soft top, removable windows and powder coated Belt-Rail frame system for quick and complete installation.I bought this cover to protect cargo from the elements. It does a good job of that. Water can get in in the corners, but it very small amount when it rains hard.
It can be installed, stowed, and setup again by one person. Initial install took a bit longer that I had expected, but stowing it and putting it back up takes maybe 10 minutes.
It is easier to deal with than hard cover, and lighter as well which is why I choose the soft top instead of hard top.
I do loose about 5-10% on my gas mileage (1-2 mpg) with it up.
While not a major problem it is a bit of pain when opening and closing the back window. It would nice if removing, and reinstalling the bar along the tailgate was easier with some sort way to latch and unlatch it.
Overall I am very happy with it.
I recieved the supertop on Wednesday afternoon around 3 ;30PM and immediatly put the truck in a heated garage to begin the installation process. By 5:00 I had the rails and supports on and put the top on and got the front secured to the front of the box, however the top would not stretch enough to allow me to secure the rear to the rails so I left it to warm up overnight so as not to rip the material. I finished the installation in about two more hours the next morning. The only complaint so far is that the two outside snaps on the right rear support rail do not line up and will not stretch enough to allow me to attach them , even after heating the top to 80 degrees. I hope the material will stretch over the next few days to allow me to connect the last two snaps. It really would be easier for two people to put the top on the first time as you really do have to stretch the fabric quite a bit to hook the rear corners, I really was afraid of ripping the seams. However upon close inspection afterwards I can find no tears as of yet. I really do like the looks on my black FX-4. We are planning a trip to Georgia this month and need the cover to haul some furniture down can hardly wait to try it out on a long trip. We had a heavy wind with blowing snow last night and only a little snow blew in on the right front corner, I will seal the corners and see how it works in the future. Thanks for a great product.
etrailer support is amazing! I received the first top with the top ripped where the snaps attached to the top.
After I sent them pictures, they had me send the bad kit back, and right away I received the 2nd kit. Everything went well as you can see in the picture. One person can lower it, deliver tall objects, then raise the top back up without having to remove the top off the support rails.
This topper is not as convenient and user friendly as described. The side windows can not be fully opened for ventilation. Just the side zippers for apx 2 " air gap. To open the back window, you have to unassemble the back bar then to roll it up is obviously bad for the plastic window. Same goes for putting anything taller than 20" in the back of bed- including my dog, bar has to be removed. Not convenient. The rubber that runs along front and back of topper doesn't fit into bed of truck, so air gap and easy for rain to get in. Would not buy this again. Great idea, just needs to be more user friendly, more thought out.
Great addition to my Super Duty. When I ordered the newer version was unavailable to I went with the previous model (newer model does not have side windows and a few other minor changes). I like having the side windows as it makes it easier to see when getting gear in and out of the truck bed. The topper is VERY weather proof. I have driven it through a couple torrential downpours and very little if any water made it inside. Installation was easy and putting it on and off the truck is easy (easier with 2 people just because of the bulk of the unit). This is perfect for us when travelling with our Airstream to keep items protected from the elements. It is tall enough to accommodate bikes in a homemade rack (front wheels off).
Overall I love the product and the idea, but I’m not happy with quality and finish. Needs more work to be the product it describes to be.
The pros:
Ton of space. I can put so much in bed of my truck now. Especially having a fifth wheel hitch in bed of truck, I still have the space to put other things. Great for shopping or leaving stuff in bed and not feel like it will go missing. Still have not camped with it but I look forward to.
Able to take apart alone without help like with other bed campers. Takes about 30 min but it can legit be done by one person.
Lots of light inside during day. I’m glad I got one with window but at times I wish it was without for more privacy. I’m split on that.
If you have a dog it’s great. Also, when you remove windows inside and back you just have roof to protect from sun with tons of air. Super cool.
The cons:
NOT water proof. If you have things inside that can’t get wet… in rain they will. Leaks everywhere. Not horrible but everything you don't want to get wet will be wet. Still need a water tight tote for clothes and electronics.
The walls can not support highway speed. So I had to add broom sticks across frame on indie to give windows support otherwise I feel like they will get sucked in and ripped off.
Not sealed. Dirt and dust gets in through the corners of camper. As well that vacuum issue. So the corners of windows and and frame have big gaps where LOTS of dirt gets in. Do not follow anyone on dirt road. Everything inside will have a coat of dirt.
If the canvas has no holes on stitching and seals are better it will be a great product. Also, if you have a bedliner (like rihnoliner like I do) forget getting velcro to stick to front for securing to truck. I had to buy a 1”X1” aluminium angle iron and rivet it to bed of truck. Then to that smooth surface I used the velcro tape. That’s only way. I can add picture of that when I get a minute.
I thought after it got wet a few times and was on truck for a few months the holes on roof would close up, but they did not. Holes where stitching is leaks water.
Overall I still love it, and would buy it again, but quality and build is just not there. I take mine apart once a month to pull my fifth wheel and having the ability to do that alone without help is still worth it for me.
It’s a nice looking topper. But I had difficulty putting it together. The top poles with holes punched in them for quick release extensions had large burrs. I had to file out each hole. Also the back window took three people pulling on it to get it stretched enough to get to the passenger side zipper. I’m hoping that after time and some hot weather it will stretch and form better and be more user friendly.
Fantastic cover!!! wife bought it for me, I can keep the truck bed dry, and still fold it forward to use my truck as a truck. price was good, workmanship superb, easy instal, only isue I had with it was the clamps were of no use, bo I bolted the rails to the bed, no big deal. thanks I.ll get 1 for my next truck!
good material!!
The windows, need to be 1" or 1/2" bigger, so when you start driving the wind won't open them from the top of each window; from time to time you have to adjust the upper channels were you clip the windows cause the wind open them little by little.
If you change the idea of the upper channels for a third zipper will make it stronger against the wind.
I purchased the canvas "topper" for my 2014 Toyota Tacoma. I wanted something that was lighter than a conventional fiberglass topper. I also wanted something that i could move or remove easily to haul taller objects in the back (Motorcycles).
Installation was recommended for 1.5 hours. I took my time and did it alone, it was almost exactly 1.5 hours. If possible I recommend 2 people to install. The canvas is tight when new and some stretching was in order.
Once installed i spent the next day driving through rain for a total of 312 miles. No issues with leakage or no extra wind noise.
Overall I would give it a 10 out of 10. It exceeded my expectations.
Lastly e trailer made the transaction very smooth and delivered it super fast and in great shape. They continue to make me a lifetime customer.
Prompt service, good product with straight forward instruction.
I bought this Toyota FJ40 with no top dint want to spin to much on a hard top but still needed a top, so I opted for a soft top, did my homework on the internet and came across ETRAILER.
I'm glad I found them, got the best deal and fast delivery. The good fit just made my truck look much better.
Cheaper than the bestop website! Super quick easy service and shipping.. Even out to Hawaii
The quality of the bestop that was on my Jeep is why I chose to get one for my truck instead of the other brand. Etrailer was great to deal with. They matched a lower price that I had found online, and got the top shipped out immediately even late on a Friday afternoon. It showed up on Wednesday, earlier than predicted. Now for the top... I expected a great fit and easy installation. The rails and bows were simple, But the bed on my Dodge is wider at the front than the rear. The top is made for the narrower width, so the rails barely sit on top of the bedrails, exposing the stake pockets on the bed, and making the whole thing look goofy. Highly disappointing! The way side panels attach is another bad design. I expected a zipper across the top, like the jeep tops, but the plastic j channel set up was a real pain to keep in place. Im thinking maybe I should've ordered the Softtopper.
1970 Toyota Land Cruiser Good top, quick shipping and a fair price. Easy to install and looks good. The only drawback is the area above the doors where they meet the top leaks in the rain. (Using Bestop half-door uppers on Aqualu lower half-doors) Hate it looks so much like a Jeep but there aren't a lot to choose from.
Directions were terribly inaccurate, spacer needs to go in the rear clamp, set screws are a terrible fit due to burs and powder coat over the threads, rear bar had the seal installed backwards allowing water in. Spent most of the two hours deburring the holes drilled for the connectors. Material is very high quality but components are lacking. Not happy at all, should have been an hour install, I have the best top Jeep top and am very happy with it but this install was a mess. Needs improvement.
Where do I start. Let’s see. Manufacturer says place the rails 63 1/2 inches apart. My truck bed is 65 inches wide. So the rail hangs over the inside of the bed, half on the bed rails.
Every time fold down the top the center bar comes apart, no snap on the bar or on the canvas like the video shows.
J channels are worthless, they should have used snaps or full length zippers on the windows, I can’t see the j channels lasting any length of time. Slid the J channels together like the video shows. Let go and the window falls out. I spent over a hour trying to put in one window like they said, I gave up
Would I buy this again?. Absolutely not. It’s great concept but has some design flaws.
I have received a lot of compliments on the truck and top.
Little do they know it’s pretty much just for show. When it fails I will go fiberglass
Most is awesome. I love the windows. The one downfall is the bed rail rails are not strong at all they do bend I had to bolt the rails to the bed with 5 bolts on each side because they just kept bending up.
Overall the product is working. It was a lot of instructions and took longer than the recommended 1 hour and half. I would recommend a two person team as well. Putting the tarp on, locking it in place and zipping it was no easy process. The written instruction was not clear and the labeling of the parts could have been simple (i.e driver side, passenger side etc.) Also I watched the video several times, the folding and open does not work that smoothly. Maybe because I have a 8 foot bed and not a 6 foot truck bed. Overall the product works and it's serving it purpose.
Very good quality. Getting the side windows installed was a challenge they wouldn’t snap down and stay, wound up sliding them in length wise which was difficult had to spray w-D 40 in the track.
The instructions were wonderful and it made the installation very easy. The cover has proved itself on several of my camping trips, keeping my gear dry and clean. I should have ordered it sooner.
Thanks' for your help. It's a good start. I will call as I need more.
We live in Portland, OR, where it rains a lot for about 8 months of the year. The first few months, our Topper was great! Then Summer came and we decided to put the top down (collapse it). When the rain season began again, we put the top back up. To our surprise it was leaking horribly through the seams and through the fabric. We contacted etrailer and they said we should contact Bestop directly. Bestop said that etrailer sold us the wrong model for our truck and they would not honor the warranty. We went back to etrailer and they were happy to replace our Topper for us with one condition - we pay for return shipping. Well, it turns out, return shipping would cost us over $400! That is more than half of what we paid for our Topper. We gave up and decided it was not worth it. I DO NOT recommend this Topper or Bestop in general. eTrailer was responsive, but unfortunately their return policy makes it unfeasible to return a bulky item like this. Very frustrated with the product and warranty policy. DO NOT BUY.
The box was in pieces ... but no parts were missing.
2019 RAM 3500 LONG BED
This is a really nice looking, quality top. I had someone else install it, so I can't personally speak about that aspect, but it didn't sound like it was too difficult. I like that there are a lot of different options for opening the windows; you can use it in all sorts of configurations. The only problem so far is that I have to lift up on the passenger door a little to close it and get it to latch. Not sure if this has to do with the top or the Jeep, since the Jeep was just restored and it wouldn't surprise me if something on the Jeep is a little out of alignment. If you are looking for a top for your Jeep I don't think you could do any better than this one.
The biggest piece of garbage! Even worse than their jeep tops. I will definitely be sending this product back and will never buy bestop brand again.
