What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or by redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Measuring Tongue Weight at the Coupler

etrailer Tongue Weight Scale at the Coupler

The etrailer tongue weight scale has 2 different configurations, which provides you with some nice flexibility when you're loading up your trailer. The standard configuration lets you measure your trailer's tongue weight at the coupler.

First, get set up on stable, level ground - like your driveway or a parking lot - to ensure that the scale will function properly. Position the scale right under your coupler so that the ball will fit into the coupler's socket. Lower your trailer down until its weight is fully supported by the scale and not the jack. Then use the scale's gauge to determine the tongue weight.

Measuring Tongue Weight at the Jack

etrailer Tongue Weight Scale at the Jack

You can also use this scale at the trailer jack, without the hassle of having to disconnect and move your truck or trailer out of the way. Just attach the scale to your jack's 2" inner tube instead. To set up the scale, remove the pins and clips, pull out the center support tube, and replace it with just the top portion of the scale, which includes the gauge and hitch ball. The scale will sit upside down in the foot, with the ball on the bottom. Once it's in place, secure the scale to the foot with one of the pins.

To attach the scale to your jack, first crank the trailer jack until the footplate or wheel is about 8" off the ground. Then remove the footplate or wheel from the jack and replace it with the scale, pinning the scale in place. Lower the jack until the scale's footplate is sitting on the ground. Unlatch the coupler from the hitch ball and raise your trailer until it is supported entirely by the jack (and the scale). Then use the scale's gauge to determine the tongue weight.

Note: The etrailer tongue weight scale is not intended as a trailer support device. The scale should not be left on the jack during travel or storage.

Upon receiving my etrailer tongue weight scale I was very disappointed to see that it is made in China. Your website did not mention that this scale is China made. I would be willing to pay more for an American made product. Also I just ordered a Featherlite 22 foot bumper pull trailer. As you are aware it will be a year before delivery to me. The scale will be used when I receive the trailer. I certainly hope you will stand behind any warrantee issues at that time.

Comments
The scale itself is produced in the USA. Some components of the scale are sourced globally. I think you will be quite satisfied with this scale. Not the mention, there is a limited lifetime warranty.

I needed to know what the tongue weight was on a 14' trailer with a side by side, I was afraid that I was exceeding the 300lb limit on my 5th wheel trailer hitch. I found out that i was actually way too light on the tongue and when I loaded the SxS backwards on the trailer I hit the 300lb limit (which is 10% of gross weight of trailer and SxS). This gave me peace of mind when towing double behind my camp trailer.

It's nice to be able to determine hitch weight. The product did not come with instructions, but the internet is helpful. There is oil in the dial that is only about half full (big bubble in the dial). I have not found what kind of oil is used and how full it really should be.

Comments
Yes, the air bubble in the dial is normal and it is perfectly good to use. The instructions are typically found inside the jack tube. If they are not included for some reason here is a link to our online instructions: https://www.etrailer.com/static/images/instructions/weightdistribution-e99044.pdf

We purchased this to weigh the hitch weight of our trailer and tested it today which gave us a peace of mind knowing we are still within our towing parameters. We are in the market for a new trailer and will take this with us to test the hitch weight since manufacturers weights are estimates and can be way more than a vehicles allowable hitch weight. Thank you etrailer for offering another quality product at a reasonable price.

The product was well packaged and arrived intact, quickly as usual from Trailer. It worked as advertised and is of good quality. The upper pin does not quite fit in the 4 holes that are aligned..the final one inch is hard to get in...I think the holes are not aligned perfectly. Other than that, I would give it 5 stars. Also I cannot use it on my jack because of the type of jack I have(.Airstream). This company does everything right...a delight to deal with them.

The scale works well, the finish is good and I have no complaints about the device. It answers the question of tongue weight and is handy with my Toyhauler to measure how tongue weight changes with different loading of the trailer. Also the “wet” weight when the water tank is filled. A good tool and handy to know the actual values instead of guessing them.

Easy to use! Both on snd off the truck, the scale lets me know my tongue weight. Never worry about overloading my truck or poor weight distribution in the trailer ever agsin

  • Using A Tongue Weight Scale To Haul Safely
You always need to be hauling under the tongue weight limit of your components. As long as the downward force on the hitch doesn't exceed 940lbs you will be okay to haul but you need to check your tongue weight of your trailer. Since you already checked your tongue weight and it's over the 940lb limit you will need to either shift the load around, remove some items off the trailer or use another trailer. Keep in mind you should have about 60% of your load evenly centered over the front...

  • Etrailer Tongue Weight Scale VS. Sherline Tongue Weight Scale
Accuracy is the most important thing when it comes to tongue weight scales in my opinion and convenience is a plus. The Sherline Scale # 5780 is accurate but not convenient, at all. One downside to the Sherline is that you will need blocks or a jack to get the scale up and into position. If you were to just lay it on the ground you would not get an accurate measurement.
