Proportional Braking

Blue Ox Patriot Proportional Braking

A vast improvement over "on/off," time-delayed braking systems, which brake at a single, pre-set level, the Blue Ox Patriot has a proportional design for precise, responsive braking. The Patriot applies your towed car's brakes with an intensity that matches your RV's braking action. The built-in inertia sensor detects when and how your rig slows down, and it then engages the actuator arm to press your car's brake pedal with an intensity that matches that slowing action. If you slam on the RV's brakes in an emergency situation, your towed car's brakes will respond with the same intensity. If you press the RV's brakes just enough to slow down a bit, your towed car will decelerate in the same way. The result is improved control, better stopping, and less wear on both your vehicle's and RV's brakes.

Easily Switch Between Towed Cars

The beauty of a portable braking system, compared to a unit that installs permanently, is that you can easily switch it between towed vehicles . It's also a great alternative if you own a newer vehicle that you don't feel comfortable modifying. As long as you have a second vehicle breakaway kit (BRK2505 - sold separately), the Patriot can be easily transferred and quickly set up in another car, giving you the freedom to switch up which vehicle comes with you on your next camping trip.

In-Cab Controller with Easy-to-Read Display

Blue Ox Patriot In-Cab Controller

The included controller has an easy-to-read LED display that plugs right into your motorhome's 12V outlet. The monitor slides into the included rubber stand, which can rest anywhere on your dashboard, or it can be mounted with the included hook-and-loop strip.

This unit lets you monitor your braking system while you're driving your motorhome, so you'll always be aware that the Patriot is working and functioning properly. Not only does the controller let you know when the unit is activated, but it will also alert you if the unit inadvertently shifts while you're on the road. This could result in too much pressure being applied to your car's brake pedal, which is why a warning will be sent to the controller so you can pull over and make the necessary adjustments.

As another safety feature, if your towed vehicle ever becomes detached from your motorhome, the screen on the controller will alert you by turning red.

Braking Power Settings

By adjusting the brake sensitivity using the in-cab controller, you can control the force at which your towed vehicle's brakes are applied when the system senses deceleration. The settings range from 1 to 10. The higher the setting, the more force will be applied to your towed vehicle's brakes. For smaller vehicles , you can get by just fine on a lower setting. Larger vehicles , or vehicles with less responsive brakes, will require a higher setting. You can also adjust the force purely to match your personal preference.

The controller also includes a manual override button that automatically activates your towed vehicle's brakes. In addition to serving as a safety measure in an emergency braking situation, the manual override can also help correct sway and fishtailing with your towed vehicle .

Quick and Easy Setup

Blue Ox Patriot Setup

The setup for the Patriot is very straightforward. The braking system will fit nicely on the driver's-side floorboard of your towed car and plug into your 12V accessory outlet for power. To position the unit, first move your seat back as far as it will go and set the system in place.

Blue Ox Patriot Brake Clamp

Then clamp the bracket on the arm securely around your brake pedal and twist the knob to lock it on. If your vehicle's floorboard is uneven, the included feet can be attached to the bottom of the braking system and adjusted to create a level surface for the Patriot to operate. Move the front of the driver's seat forward until it's resting gently against the back of the unit. If there's too much pressure on the back of the unit, the lights will turn blue and red during the setup process, letting you know that the driver's seat should be moved back slightly. The back of the unit is adjustable as well, allowing you to raise or lower the butt pad to fit snugly against the front of the driver's seat.

Once the unit is in place, setup is simple. Push the "power" button, and the unit will begin blinking blue and green lights, signifying that it's ready to be set up. Then push the "setup" button, which will let the unit run through a quick testing process. When the power light turns a solid green, the Patriot is ready to go.

New Design BRK2022 unit does not operate as advertised. Unit alarmed 4 times in the first 150 miles. BlueOx Sales and Engineering informed me that they have identified communications issues within the new Design BRK2022 that will require returning to the factory. Not a happy camper here. Disappointed and Upset.

  • Does the Blue Ox Patriot Press Hard Enough to Activate Brakes of Vehicle Turned Off
The Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR operates the brakes of your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara just fine. This product applies enough force to the brake pedal that the brakes of your Jeep will apply adequately. The brakes of a vehicle still work when the engine is off, without the vacuum assist feature the brake pedal does get harder but if you press hard enough the brakes will still apply. The Patriot presses hard enough to still apply the brakes. The couple times you can still get the...

  • Would the Blue Ox Patriot Brake System Transmit 45 feet
I spoke to my contact at Blue Ox and she informed me that 45 feet would not be too far for the Patriot part # BLU37TR to transmit and the fact that the skin of your RV is metal would not be a problem either. I tried to get an exact range that the system has and she said that there isn't an exact figure, but that you should have no problems.

  • Does the Blue Ox Patriot Braking System Require Wiring to Tow Vehicle Braking System
The Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR that you referenced does not wire into the stoplight circuit of the tow vehicle at all. The inertia sensor of the unit is always looking for braking action of the tow vehicle. It does not require the stoplight switch of your tow vehicle to start activating at all. When the unit senses a change in inertia that would coincide with braking it begins to start applying the brakes of the towed vehicle.

The display will turn yellow or red in such instances. When all is well the display will simply show the selected power setting.

  • Troubleshooting Remote Disconnecting from Blue Ox Patriot Braking System
I spoke with my contact at Blue Ox who said that the they haven't had any calls come in yet about the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR having issues with the remote connecting to the main unit but that the original Patriot did have a connection issue that was not unheard of. Unfortunately there isn't a signal booster available. Regardless, the solution would be the same. She said to move it as close to the driver's side window as possible (which you already did) and then you can try raising it...

  • Will Testing Blue Ox Patriot with Vehicle Parked Apply Vehicle Brake
Sounds like your Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR is functioning properly. This unit is designed to sense the amount of deceleration your tow vehicle is apply and put a proportional amount of braking on the toad. Since you are not moving when you tested it with the RV brake pedal it would not apply the vehicle brake pedal. Since you tested the override and breakaway and it worked you are good.

  • Should Blue Ox Patriot Push Towed Vehicle Brakes Firmly When Tow Vehicle Applies Brakes
If you are testing the application of the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR with the brake pedal of your tow vehicle while at a stop you won't see the Patriot's brake pedal application move much since it's not sensing the amount of braking you are applying. This system has an inertia sensor which has to feel you apply the brakes hard to apply the towed vehicle brakes hard. You should be able to slide the manual override lever of the Patriot and see the pedal assembly apply firmly though. ...

The standard 2013 Ford Focus has brake assist but it is not continuous or regenerative like in the Hybrid model. • Is Supplemental Braking System Required to Flat Tow a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
If you don't already have a supplemental braking system for when you are flat towing your 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser then yes, you will need to install a braking system. Not only does almost every state require this, but it also gives you a better and much more safe towing experience. For your application I recommend going with the portable Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR because it is easy to setup and use plus if you end up flat towing a different vehicle in the future you can easily use the...

  • Best Supplemental Braking System Available for a 2006 Hummer H3
The most popular supplemental braking system that we have to offer is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This sits in your 2006 Hummer H3 and presses the brake pedal at the same time and with the same intensity as the brake pedal in your tow vehicle via radio frequency. This is actually a universal system that can easily be adjusted for various vehicles. Keep in mind that a complete flat towing setup will also include a base plate kit, tow bar, tow bar wiring, and possibly a high-low adapter....

  • Do Vehicle Supplemental Braking Systems Have to have Breakaway Kit
Basically most states (if not all at this point) require a supplemental braking system by law. Part of that stipulates that you have to have a breakaway system in place that the vehicle's brakes would apply if the vehicle became disconnected. All of the kits we carry like the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR come with a breakaway system so you would not need to purchase the kit separately.

  • Is Supplemental Braking Really Needed When flat Towing a 2017 Jeep Cherokee
By law most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles. Some models of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee may use Mortorq® fasteners. If your vehicle has these types of fasteners, you will need a PFMTS2E bit to remove them which can be ordered...

  • Why Cant Brake Controller Be Used for Flat Towing Vehicle
The type of braking needed when flat towing a vehicle is different from a brake controller for a trailer. Vehicle brakes are not activated with an electrical circuit and instead are hydraulic pressure. That means a brake controller that uses varying voltage like the Activator cannot be used. The easiest system to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces...

  • Flat Towing Vs. Using a Tow Dolly for Jeep Wrangler
Deciding between flat towing your vehicle with all four wheels down or using a tow dolly partly boils down to your preference and application. For your Jeep Wrangler, I recommend going with a flat towing setup. This is going to be simpler to hookup/unhook once everything is installed, so it's a better option if you plan on towing the vehicle more than once or twice. Also, as you mentioned, flat towing won't leave you with a tow dolly to find storage for when you reach a campsite or whatever...

According to pages 384 and 385 of the owner's manual for your 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk you need to place the transfer unit in the Neutral (N) position for flat towing. I recommend verifying this in your copy of the owner's manual. Your RViBrake3 braking system is similar to the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. • Will the Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System Brake Going Up a Hill
The Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System part # BLU37TR operates off of inertia therefore a gradual decline in momentum while traveling up a hill will not apply enough force to activate the cylinder and apply the brakes on your toad. However, if you will be traveling though mountainous terrain then Blue Ox does recommend that you slightly decrease the sensitivity setting on the unit. Blue Ox stated that they have not heard of any complications about false braking while traveling up a hill.
