Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - Plugs into Vehicle Wiring - HM56107 Review

Today were reviewing part number HM56107 from Hopkins. This is a custom taillight wiring kit for towed vehicles and its made specifically for your GMC Acadia model years 2007 through 2012. So this kit is an easy way to get the power for the lights in your towed vehicle without having to splice into your RV wiring. We have a simple plug-in harness here. So you have right here, lets see, I want to make sure you can see this. These wires are going to plug into the back of your Acadia behind the taillights so the one that has a yellow wire in the bundles, thats for your drivers side behind the taillights on your drivers side of your Acadia, and then the one with the green wire, this bundle here, is for the passenger side of your GMC Acadia, and then this runs up to the power converter here which is weatherproof to protect the diodes and which also prevents electrical feedback to safeguard your towed cars electrical system, and it wont interfere, this wiring and this power converter will not interfere with the electrical system when your towed car is not hooked up to your RV.

So then you have this long wire here and that runs from the back of your towed vehicle all the way up to the front of your GMC Acadia and you have a white ground wire with a self-tapping screw included, and that should be mounted on a clean unpainted surface at the front of your vehicle. And then you have the 4-pole which obviously ends at the front of your Acadia and very simple, mounts in this mounting bracket which is included. You have the two screws that you need for mounting the bracket like that. You have a dust cap that you attach to the 4-pole to protect it when its not in use. You have cable ties to take up any slack and dielectric grease to protect your electrical connection.

You always want to use dielectric grease whenever you have an electrical connection. The extension loop for connecting the towed car to the RV is sold separately so if you have a 4-way on your RV then for the loop youll want to use Hopkins 4-pole loop number HM47115. If you have a 7-way on your RV, as many of the newer RVs do, then youll want to use Hopkins coiled wire adapter, part number HM47065. Now if you have a supplemental braking system, its likely that you will need a brake light relay which youll have to purchase separately. Use part number RM88400.

This kit does come with a 90-day warranty. And there you have it for part number HM56107, the Hopkins custom taillight wiring kit for your 2007 through 2012 GMC Acadia.

  • Recommended Base Plate Kit and Towing System for 2011 GMC Acadia
For your 2011 GMC Acadia with billet bumper trim the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 523149-1 will work just fine. I've attached the installation instructions to assist as there will be some trimming required for this install which isn't uncommon when installing base plates. Then I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar - 6,000 lbs # RM-520 along with safety cables # RM-643. You will also need a high-low adapter for proper towing height, so I've attached an article...

Be sure to follow all of the preparations steps outlined in the manual each time you tow. Since you have a Blue Ox tow bar I suggest staying with Blue Ox baseplates as this avoids the added cost and complexity...
