Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

With Alex's assistance and knowledge of my trailer requirements, I installed two 3500 lb axles. These axles are superior to any others that I was shopping for, and with a combined GVW of 7,000 lbs my trailer is now suited for any medium sized load.

Axle arrived in perfect condition, was also an exact fit for my Top Hat Trailer.
Your staff was of great help finding my right axle.
I would recommend etrailer to everyone.

Axle is working out great. Easy to install, fit perfectly.
Kenneth - 11/04/2018

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers.

etrailer customer service for returns and their products as a whole are third rate at best. Every product arrives damaged from terrible packaging and handling by etrailer. Customer service sometimes responds and their return policy is garbage at best. buy elsewhere

Came in bent

Axle should have a slight bend to it.
-- Etrailer Expert Sierra K - 10/12/2021

Specs. matched exact to the broken axle and was easy to install. I was surprised that the axle was pre-wired although it was not replacement of the brake axle on my trailer. Hub fit nicely and trailer is now ready for the next haul job. Delivery was as promised.

The axle has been a good replacement and has worked as it should.
Ronald E - 08/13/2021

Local supplier said this part was not available for months, E trailer delivered in a few days.

Trailer axle was a perfect fit and after going to several local dealers first, etrailer was the only company I could find the parts I needed during Covid. Parts have had no issues for a year of service.

Great service as always out of etrailer. I ordered 2 new axles for my car carrier, great specs on your webpage made for a perfect match. Items arrived in 3 days, heavily wrapped and will add that the end of the axles which could rust if not installed soon were covered in grease, a nice touch to insure no damage. Thanks as always for having a great source for all things trailers!...

one year later no issues at all
Michael - 06/08/2020

Axle is perfect. Holding up well after a year plus.

I'm very pleased with all of my purchases from eTrailer. Everything has seemed to be of excellent quality and value. The wiring kits and directions were very well thought out and one of the projects I completed would not have been possible had it not been for the excellent videos on the website.

I'm an eTrailer customer for life!

Friendly, curteous service and prompt receipt of ordered parts. I have told many people in Kodiak, Alaska about your superior
service, prices and demeanor. Thank you!

very pleased with this product .precise measurements .arrived in a timely notch quality .would definatly buy from etrailer again

The axle fit like a glove, It took about an hour and half by the time I put the tools away
I only had two jack stands make sure you have four or cinder blocks will work also and a new bearing and U bolt kit.
I was going thru one used tire a week because the axle spindle was bent now this trailer is riding smooth!.

They shipped the axle right away, very happy with the product and service from etrailer.

The axel I bought was of good quality, cheaper than buying a local, and the shipping was free! I wish the website would have prompted me to buy the extra items I needed. Example: bolts and plates to attach the axle to the spring. Bolts for the brake assembly, wheels, tires, Springs etc. I did not need all those things but it would be nice to have them pop up as choices.

Personal service was great. Received a call regarding an address issue; person from etrailer wanted to make sure address was correct prior to shipping. This ensured order received without delay. Axels are a perfect fit; on-line videos for installation are very helpful. All your videos are well done; informative and helpful. Prices were better than any local suppliers in the area. I still trade with local businesses, but for large purchases I go to etrailer.

The seal puller is a must have tool, works great!!

My utility trailer bearings locked up and welded to the spindle, along with the seal. Repair would have cost as much as a new axle. Ordered this axle Thursday night around 10pm, Arrived Saturday morning around 10am. They were running a special and regular shipping was free but I paid for 2nd day delivery which was discounted. Actual product was as described, wrapped well end to end with rubber protectors over spindles. Installation was a snap and took about 20 minutes start to finish with no help. Still waiting on hubs to be delivered but I am expecting the axle to do what it is supposed to. I will definitely use etrailer again, and should I need another axle, I wouldn't think twice about ordering this one again. Excellent business with an excellent product.

Needed a new 3500 pound axle for a 30 year old utility trailer, ordered a new one plus the u bolt kit, items were shipped the next day and received 3 days later.
Axle was a top quality Dexter axle. Both items were well packed for their trip. I will most certainly order all of my trailer parts from these folks, Great service, great parts and great follow up.

Product was exactly as described and of good quality. Will certainly use etrailer again for my trailer needs.

This is the second time I ordered off of Etrailer. Renée did an excellent job of putting together all the parts that I needed and they were all in stock. And I received my trailer axles hubs and bearings in four days almost all the way across the country Etrailer does an excellent job with quality parts

The axles I needed were easy to order, great descriptions etc. I realize the hub's and brake drum were shipping seperate and required assembly but that's minor, everything was there. My second order had some minor issues with availability but I talked to Sandy J and she was a pleasure to work with. My corrected order came in 3 dsys. Very pleased thus with e trailer and will be ordering parts there again.

  • Replacement 3500-lb Trailer Axle for 2007 Spree by KZ Tandem Trailer
If your KZ Spree trailer's 3500-lb-rated axles are bent from damage or from overloading them beyond their weight capacity then they should be replaced. This will not only restore the trailer's handling but it will also prevent continued issues with uneven tire wear. Usually an axle that was bent from being overloaded will result in more wear on the inside edges of the tires. A new axle has a light upward bend that levels out under load. The wiring that you see on axle # T3584F-EZ-8974 is for electric brakes. So you would run the wiring back to one side of the axle, make the splices for the brakes on that side and, instead of running your own wire, it is already run through the axle. So all you will have to do is splice in the brake magnets on the other side. Take a look at the video I have linked. It is mentioned near the end of the video.

  • What is Causing Wear on Outer Edge of Passenger Side Tire on Trailer
I first recommend checking to make sure the tire is properly inflated to the maximum psi listed on the tire's sidewall. If the tire is under-inflated, the sides of the tire tread will wear quickly. If the tire is inflated properly, then it's very possible that there is an issue with the trailer's suspension components or axle/spindle. Since the wear you noticed is only on the outer edge of the tire, this might indicate that the spindle is not parallel to the ground. There could be a suspension...

Trailer axles typically have the bow you mentioned in them to help compensate for the vertical load they bear and still have proper wheel camber. Square axles are a bit of a wild card though as they aren't as standard as the round tube axles. I have seen totally straight ones and I have seen curved ones.
