Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Solid axle with all the bolts and brackets to mount the axle quick and easy. Solid axle, should last a long time.

by:

A great product for the price installed easy and I bought 3 for a tri axle and couldn't be happier I made a 20 foot trailer to haul 4 wheelers and snowmobiles

Still loving these hubs well worth the investment

by:

Exactly what I ordered and arrived quickly. Everything assembled easily except one end cap was a little fussy. This axle seems well built and easy to lubricate.
Thank you!

by:

Didn't like the grease nipple way of greasing the bearings. There was no information on how to do it and how much grease to use. I ended up greasing it by hand instead and had to guess how much grease to use. I didn't have any other issues with it.

A couple thousand miles later and its working fine. No issues at all.

etrailer staff have always been very knowledgeable and helpful. The parts are always good quality and as advertised. The axle was easy to install on my custom made trailer.

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Very excited about putting my faithful trailer back in service, with a serious axle underneath that I have confidence in. The folks at etrailer very helpful and responsive. Thanks

by:

Everything was as expected and we were able to repair our trailer without issues. Shipping was prompt and the service was great. Received the package one day earlier than initially promised

by:

These axles work great. I replaced three axles on my trailer last fall (2022) with these axles. I was able to install the new axles and springs in about 3 hours because everything matched up very nicely - thanks to the help of the folks at etrailer.

by:

I purchased a number of products from etrailer and I am very pleased with them all. The shipper lost my axle. When I contacted etrailer customer service, they handled my problem quickly and I had a replacement axle in a couple days. Well done!

The products were all of high quality and the assemble was much easier as a result. I have attached a few pictures of the build for those interested.

Thanks etrailer for your great products and service!!

by:

I ordered this axle as a replacement for the one on my 1996 Haulin' 4x8 utility trailer. I'd neglected to maintain the bearings and when one went it destroyed my axle. This axle was an exact fit but the spring seats needed to be moved to the top of the axle. I ordered new seats and U-bolt mounting kit as well as the axle. I found a welder to remove the original spring seats and weld the new ones to match my application. Installation was a snap, I just followed the video included on the web site. Ordering my parts from etrailer really saved me $$ over the quotes I'd received from local shops.

by:

Quick delivery with tracking link! Great product and price!! Easy process to install axle and hubs. I would have appreciated a torque specification for the U-Bolts and Lug nuts in the video. I didn't take the time to search other locations or Q&A.

Tip: 1-1/2 " PVC makes a great tool to seat the grease seals. I used my 28MM socket, it was very close to size. I decided to use 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe to install the E-Z Lube dust seal. I have many tools however no wooden hammers.

by:

Product seems to be built well. I was missing a set of outer bearings that I had to get from a local tractor supply due to time constraints. They were missing when shipped to me. I have been happy so far with this product as I have pulled my home built teaardrop on it. I have traveled over 3k miles with it as well as a tire set I purchased from etrailer.
Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Tire w 15"
Good sturdy wheels and tires and they look good in person.

by:

Really good solid axle... I needed the mounting tabs moved and had a metal fabricator do the work for $20.00. This was used on an old boat trailer that I turned into a utility trailer. Also swapped out the springs with ones purchased from etrailer too. To complete the package I ordered (3) 165/65-8 trailer tires. The trailer tows straight and hauls everything I've ever needed to.

by:

I installed the Dexter axle on my trailer yesterday, and I was very impressed with the quality and the ease of installation. The install took much less time than expected, and this was helped by the hubs having the bearing pre-installed, what a bonus! This is a great solution to replace a fried axle, I highly recommend it.

by:

This axle kit made it fairly easy to rebuild my trailer. The pictures show what I started out with for a trailer and what the finished trailer looks like.

by:

Fits as it should. EZ lube hubs are much easier than having to repack the bearings. This is the second purchase I’ve made from etrailer and their service has been great.

by:

Used it on a homebuilt trailer worked great and tracks perfectly.

by:

I bought a axle, springs wheels, hubs etc. to build a utility trailer, I inadvertently had ordered incompatible hubs for the selected axle the person filling the order noticed this and contacted customer service to alert them of the issue who then called me to correct the problem. This saved me the time and expense of returning the part and delaying the project. great service, attentive, knowledgeable employees and great products.
Thanks E trailer.

  • Can Shorter Axle be Used to Replace 63-1/2 Inch Axle
The 72 inch Dexter Trailer Axle # 20440I-EZ-72 would be the better option here. Going with a shorter axle than what you have, like the 60 inch # 20440I-EZ-60, isn't ideal as shortening the base of the trailer could throw off capacities or even the balance of the trailer. The best option is really to get an axle fabricated to your specific needs, but between these two axles the better choice is the 72 inch Dexter Trailer Axle # 20440I-EZ-72.

  • Can the Dexter Trailer Axle # 20440I-EZ-72 Mount with Pads Facing Up
Axles have a bow to them and they need to be installed with that bow facing down otherwise you get what you have now, an axle that seems like it's cambered way too far out. You need to have the axle rotated 180 degrees and have the spring seats installed on the other side of the axle so that they will attach to your trailer properly.

  • How to Determine What Replacement Axle Might Work
You would need to measure from the hub face to hub face and then from the spring mount centers to pick out the correct axle to fit your trailer. In order for the # 20440I-EZ-72 to work the distance between the spring seat centers would need to be 58 inches and from hub face to hub face would need to be 72 inches. If you need something different let me know but I do not have a way to look up the specs of your Jayco. This specific axle can only be used on up to 12 inch diameter wheels.

  • How to Determine Trailer Axle Capacity
The trailer will have a plate or sticker on it that will list the VIN number. The weight rating of the axle should be listed on that same plate or sticker. Also, the axle could have a tag or plate on it that will list the weight capacity. You can also tell the weight capacity of the axle by measuring the diameter of the axle. • What Info is Needed to Pick Out Replacement Trailer Axle
To pick out a replacement axle for your trailer you would need to know three pieces of information. The distance from hub face to hub face like you mentioned, the axle capacity, and the distance from spring seat center to spring seat center. With that info you'd be able to pick out an axle. I attached a link to this page that has all of the trailer axles we offer. You can select from the filters on the page what dimensions you find. • Difference Between 72 inch Dexter Axles 204401-EZ-72 and 20545I-EZ-72-10
The difference is the bolt pattern of the hubs that either axle comes with. The part # 20545I-EZ-72-10 comes with idler hubs that have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and part # 20440I-EZ-72 comes with hubs with the bolt pattern 4 on 4 inch. • Will Slipper Spring Work With Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Idler Hubs
You sure can use slipper springs with the Dexter Trailer Axle, part # 20440I-EZ-72. The only concern is your hangers you have on your trailer. You may find that the slipper spring is a bit longer and a hanger will need to be moved. The slipper spring I recommend is part # SP-039275. This is a 3-leaf spring that measures 30 inches long and 1-3/4 inches wide. It is designed to be used for 2,900 lb trailers axles so it may be just a bit stiffer ride. • Options For Replacing An Old AL-KO Axle On A 1994 Pop Up Camper
The axle in your picture appears to be an old AL-KO torsion axle. We do carry some 72" long round tube axles like the # 20440I-EZ-72. The 72" being measured across from hub face to hub face.
