Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. This axle is also built with drop spindles, which will lower the ride height of your trailer to allow for easier loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - 7685269-I

Today, we're going to take a look at the Dexter 95 inch long E-Z Lube 3,500 pound trailer axle beam with the idler hubs, four inch drop and a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. Now, this axle beam lift is part of your trailer suspension system, replaces an axle on your trailer, and you can fabricate a suspension to fit your application. It is a high strength steel construction, and this is an underslung design. And by that, I mean the spring seats here that your leaf spring mount to, they're welded to the underside of the axle for mounting your leaf springs to. The spring seats and the spindles are all welded on.Now, also on this axle, you might notice right in the middle here, this has a bend to it. And this is to ensure the proper camber angle.

So basically, when you install this axle, that bend should face up, and this label here should face the rear of the trailer. So basically, having this center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower, it allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load that you put on your trailer. This then creates a nice zero camber angle for even road to tread contact across the width of your trailer tires and ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. The result is that you get an excellent straight line acceleration for steady controlled towing. Now, the spindles on these, they are a four-inch drop. You can see the spindles up here, the axles down here.

So there's a four inch drop. And these are E-Z Lube spindles. What's nice about that, the E-Z Lube spindles have the built-in grease zerk fittings for simple lubrication in your bearings. So you can just put your grease gun and pump grease in there to your bearings, that way you don't have to disassemble the hub, you can just pump it right in there. And of course, the lowered axle beam, that provides you a lower deck height for easier loading and unloading.

The idler hubs, they are a cast iron idler hub. They're very sturdy and durable. And it will include all the parts you need. Now, we've assembled it just to show you what it looks like here, but it will include the inner and outer bearings. The bearing races, the grease seal, the grease caps, and they do include the E-Z Lube grease caps that'll go on like that. And they have the rubber plug that you can pop off to access that zerk fitting.

The wheel studs and the lug nuts are all included, and they even include a nice tube of Marine grade wheel bearing grease to be able to put on your bearings. This part is made in the USA. Weight capacity is 3,500 pounds. Now, on an axle there's two critical measurements, and that'll be the hub face to hub face length. And that'll be measured from the hub face right here where your wheel studs are all the way across to the hub face over there. On this one, it'll measure 95 inches. And the other measurement will be the spring center to spring center length. And that's measured from the center of this spring seat to the center of that spring seat. It'll be 80 inches on this one, which is usually your trailer width also. The spindle drop we mentioned is going to be four inches. Axle tubing diameter is three inches. The bolt pattern on the hub is a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. The wheel studs are half an inch. And the wheel size that you would use on this is 13 inch wheel up to 15 inch wheels. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter 95 inch long E-Z Lube 3,500 pound trailer axle beam with the idler hubs, the four inch drop and a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern..

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Very excited about putting my faithful trailer back in service, with a serious axle underneath that I have confidence in. The folks at etrailer very helpful and responsive. Thanks

Wonderific! Hauled camping gear up to Lake Tahoe 600 miles round trip, including my 5000 watt generator. Even had a big bear jump in the back to inspect that load when I arrived. The dexter turned the trailer into a very reliable and road worthy hauler. Since installing, made many trips up in Sierra to haul firewood and its been flawless!

Product seems to be built well. I was missing a set of outer bearings that I had to get from a local tractor supply due to time constraints. They were missing when shipped to me. I have been happy so far with this product as I have pulled my home built teaardrop on it. I have traveled over 3k miles with it as well as a tire set I purchased from etrailer.

I purchased a number of products from etrailer and I am very pleased with them all. The shipper lost my axle. When I contacted etrailer customer service, they handled my problem quickly and I had a replacement axle in a couple days. Well done!

The products were all of high quality and the assemble was much easier as a result. I have attached a few pictures of the build for those interested.

Thanks etrailer for your great products and service!!

I had a seemingly uncommon axel on my Haulmark 16', tandem axel, enclosed trailer. 95" with spring center of 82". Couldn't find these specs anywhere, so I ordered Dexter 95"with 80" spring center. Had a friend move the spring brackets to 82". Took him about an hour total. I installed new axel yesterday. Without ant assistance, I was able to install the new axel in about an hour. Perfect fit. Great price, panphenomenal and fast shipping.
Will be ordering a new axel for my flatbed soon.

Really good solid axle... I needed the mounting tabs moved and had a metal fabricator do the work for $20.00. This was used on an old boat trailer that I turned into a utility trailer. Also swapped out the springs with ones purchased from etrailer too. To complete the package I ordered (3) 165/65-8 trailer tires. The trailer tows straight and hauls everything I've ever needed to.

Comments
This axle and springs are perfect for what I was looking to accomplish. Trailer tows straight and true and has saved me with large items on several occasions. I no longer have to drive 45 minutes to borrow a truck to haul stuff...

E trailer has excellent products and great customer service. I really think the videos on each product is very very helpful. I’ve had dealings with other trailer parts vendors and etrailer is the best of all to deal with. Hats off to this well organized company. They will stay on my trailer need list.

Fits as it should. EZ lube hubs are much easier than having to repack the bearings. This is the second purchase I’ve made from etrailer and their service has been great.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Idler Hubs in Trailer Axles

I recently purchased a 1997 Pacific boat trailer, 2,000 lb capacity. Installed new lights, spare tire carrier, and tongue jack two months ago. Decided I may as well replace the wheel bearings and seals only to discover the spindles had deep gouges from the seals or material between the seal and spindle shaft. The right side (as viewed from the rear) even had a deep gouge in the seal area from who knows what. Surprisingly, the wheel bearings were fine.

My initial intention was to use what is called a "speed sleeve" to repair the seal contact area on the spindle, in addition to replacing the wheel bearings. The bearings were an odd size, thus somewhat expensive. Cheaper to replace the hubs but with the "speed sleeves", would come out to nearly $200, notwithstanding my labor.

To the rescue, etrailer! I measured my existing axle per the directions from the staff and ordered a replacement axle with hubs and a U-bolt kit for nearly the same price. Shipping was surprisingly fast given current events and a brand new axle and associated parts were delivered last night (8 April, 2020).

I've replaced wheel bearings before but have never replaced a trailer axle, so I was initially somewhat intimidated by the job. I jacked the trailer up to remove the wheels and used jack stands to ensure it would remain that way while I proceeded to remove the old axle.

The u-bolts (not quite a U given the square axle) were not too bad to remove. I used copious amounts of WD-40 on the threads and an adjustable wrench did the rest of the work. I was going to use an air ratchet but did not have enough clearance and did not wish to risk raising the trailer any further.

The old axle came out fine and was a bit heavy, around 50 lbs by my reckoning. Given the service life of 23 years, I'd say it did a good job (it was the original axle). Interestingly, the new axle weighed a good 10 - 15 lbs lighter...

The new axle went in fine, although due to the camber, which the original axle did not have, it took a bit of "squeezing" to get the holes on the spring seats. Nothing terrible, and my initial measurements were correct.

I did not take photos of the bearing and seal installation process as my hands had a fair amount of grease on them but if you follow the instructions, it is relatively simple. Make sure you "cup" the outer bearing area with grease in your palm to force it between the rollers. You will know when you have enough as it will be pushed between the rollers on the other side. Take a look at some [online] videos if you have never seen it done before. I believe there is a video on the etrailer website.

I used a short piece of 2x4 to install the seals and they went in without fanfare. I would recommend wiping a thin film of grease on the seal seating area of the hub prior to seal installation.

Installing the hubs was relatively straight forward, I seated the bearings while rotating the hubs to the recommended 50 ft/lbs. Then backed off WITHOUT rotating the hub, finger tightening, and installing the locking clips, which I have never seen before as I typically use cotter pins.

I installed the wheels and will be installing my "Bearing Buddies" later this afternoon.

All told, the job took me approximately 2 1/2 hours, maybe 3. I took my time and did my best to ensure it was a safe evolution given that the trailer had to be raised enough to allow axle replacement.

I will re-torque the u-bolts after some use and will probably re-seat the bearings as well. The price on the new bearings and seals is a significant improvement over what had come standard with the trailer.

Tools used were a 3/4" socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, 10" adjustable wrench, 1 1/2" socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench, 1/2" socket for the new u-bolts, a soft faced hammer to remove the "Bearing Buddies", (2) jack stands, and standard floor jack. Paper towels were most helpful during the bearing greasing and installation process...

If you have never done this before, like me, I can assure you it was relatively straight forward and I'm sitting here somewhat proud of myself...

Kudo's to the staff at etrailer!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Idler Hubs in Trailer Axles

I ordered this axle as a replacement for the one on my 1996 Haulin' 4x8 utility trailer. I'd neglected to maintain the bearings and when one went it destroyed my axle. This axle was an exact fit but the spring seats needed to be moved to the top of the axle. I ordered new seats and U-bolt mounting kit as well as the axle. I found a welder to remove the original spring seats and weld the new ones to match my application. Installation was a snap, I just followed the video included on the web site. Ordering my parts from etrailer really saved me $$ over the quotes I'd received from local shops.

I bought a axle, springs wheels, hubs etc. to build a utility trailer, I inadvertently had ordered incompatible hubs for the selected axle the person filling the order noticed this and contacted customer service to alert them of the issue who then called me to correct the problem. This saved me the time and expense of returning the part and delaying the project. great service, attentive, knowledgeable employees and great products.
Thanks E trailer.

Quick delivery with tracking link! Great product and price!! Easy process to install axle and hubs. I would have appreciated a torque specification for the U-Bolts and Lug nuts in the video. I didn't take the time to search other locations or Q&A.

Tip: 1-1/2 " PVC makes a great tool to seat the grease seals. I used my 28MM socket, it was very close to size. I decided to use 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe to install the E-Z Lube dust seal. I have many tools however no wooden hammers.

I think I'd like to change the review to 3 stars and say:
Though the mechanical quality of the axle/hubs is great, whatever the axle and hubs are painted with comes off very easily. Simply removing tape would pull the paint with it. This will eventually lead to these parts rusting and you'll need to add an additional coat of paint to prevent rust. The paint quality is very poor

Just received my order today. It’s been back ordered for a while, at no fault of etrailer, but they kept me informed about the status of my order and offered other options that were in stock multiple times. I’ve dealt with them a few times and they always have great customer service.
