Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Replaced a 3,000 lbs axle with this 5,200 lbs axle with electric brakes.
Was easy, quality was great. Brakes were easy to wire up and all is working.
I would recommend this axle assembly.

by:

The whole staff is top notch at etrailer, and easy to get ahold on the phone. Dexter is a quality product and etrailer offers it at a fair price. The only negative I can share is the plastic plugs they ship in the hubs folded the excluder lip backwards on the inboard hub seal. It took a little bit of working by hand to fix it. It's a blind install so can't see if it went on right. Would be nice to see a better plug used there or maybe just a piece of tape over it. That's on dexter though, not etrailer.

Note I have not received any compensation for this review. I do reviews because I use other people's reviews and want to return the favor.
I wanted the largest axle that fits the wheels for my rv trailer and that is the 6000# axle, replacing a 4400# axle. FYI, I can upgrade the brakes to 7000# with different magnets but not sure the tires have that much traction. Received the parts on time and in good shape, even though the ups guy dropped the axle on concrete. Wish I wasn’t home to see that. After I placed the order there was some communications with etrailer and they delivered as promised! I have placed orders since then and will keep ordering due to continued good service.
The axle came with studs pressed in but I knocked them out and used nuts/bolts to bolt on the brake plate assemblies.
I cut off the spring seats and welded on new ones in the needed location, as planned. I could have ordered the axle with the spring seats where I needed them but I was in a hurry and figured this way was faster. And etrailer had the best price and had good service on many prior purchases.
Installed the axle and adjusted the brakes. Note, I soldered the wiring connections and sealed.
Performed a break in procedure and took the trailer on a long trip. During the trip the brakes started getting grabby and I had to dial back the trailer brakes. Once home, I adjusted the brakes and it took quite a bit of adjustment. From now on I will be prepared to adjust the brakes during trips. I expect the brakes to work better on the next trip. Honestly, this is the first trailer I have owned with brakes and am not used to needing to adjusting brakes.

Dexter axles are some of the best on the market. With etrailers inventory and expert support, you can't go wrong.

by:

The products were excellent and went together easy with help of your videos. My only issue was the grease included was smashed during shipping.Lost about half a tube which covered the boxes contained in the package.

by:

Installed a yr ago. Perfect product.
One
thing for me though....
I had to buy different fenders because I bought better tires and rims for this new axle which turned out to be slightly wider.
So the original fender would have cut into the tires.
I got everything from etrailer. Axle with brakes fully assembled, controller, fenders, wire harness, connections tires, time and more...and couldn't be happier with cust service, pricing and availability.

by:

I ordered these August 1st and they just arrived 4 1/2 months later. I don't blame Etrailer for that. It's just the way things were with supply since then. Etrailer kept me updated as things changed. Since I live in Maine and will have to install them outside I won't be doing it until spring. I have checked everything over though and the quality looks excellent. I have never had any problem with anything from Etrailer. This package deal was at a great price and includes everything except the U bolt mounting kit which I bought separately.

by:

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

by:

I purchased these axles and brakes to replace the old axles on my car hauler. Everything went smoothly with this order. I received my axle and hubs much faster than I anticipated. The parts were well packaged and everything is exactly as I ordered it. I had never installed hubs on trailer axles but after watching one of etrailer's instructional videos I had both sides of the idler axle done in less than 30 minutes. I had similar results on the axle that I put electric brakes on as well. Dexter axles with the EZ-Lube spindles are well worth the money. Bottom line I couldn't be happier with the products and service.

by:

I can not say enough about how good your product is! The installation went very smooth.
I would highly recommend your product.
It was great to see that everything comes with it right down to the grease.

by:

I ordered 2 axles snd 2 fenders on Wednesday and parts arrived on Friday at noon. Estimated ETA was 5 days. Parts were shipped same day i ordered. Parts arrived in perfect condition. I am very impressed with the super fast service, as well as being kept informed of every step. This was my first purchase from etrailer but I will definitely use them again for all my trailer needs. My only gripe, which was my fault, is in only ordered 1 Ubolt kit but I ordered 2 axles. It stands to reason if I orderedc1 ubolt kit and 2 axles it may have been an oversight on my part and a phone call or email to check if I needed 2 ubolt kits would have been nice.
I highly recommend them.

by:

Been using this for a year. No problems installing or using it so far. Brakes work well, everything seems to be holding up perfectly.

by:

This axle was exactly what I needed. There was originally a mistake in fulfillment as the axle I received did not match my order. Once the correct axle came I had no problems with installation.

by:

Everything went together perfect. My trailer is strong and safe now. Glad I bought my replacement parts threw E-Trailer

by:

Great communication about status and everything included and identified.

by:

Great axles. I will order some more soon for another project.

by:

Highly recommend! I first made the mistake and ordered from “the other trailer parts outlet” so it took 10 days from my order to receive missing and beat up broken China made parts. The other place didn’t want to replace but wanted me to repair at my time and cost. I called etrailer, ordered on Monday, received on Wednesday. No damage as they actually package the parts up correctly. I got brand name parts too. Lesson learned. If you are on the fence or shopping around. Save yourself 10 days, 5 phone calls and hassle. Shop etrailer first.

by:

Packaged well, delivery ahead of time, deducted one start as I expected the axles to be assembled with brakes bearings etc all complete not packaged separately adding hours to my initial estimate.

by:

Great service, fast delivery, and exceptional support. I would never think of buying trailer parts anywhere else. The axle purchased was of high quality, and the wheels are top notch. Very happy with my purchase!

by:

Joann was very knowledgeable and very helpful.. my trailer axle and parts arrived on time and everything was in order..it doesn’t get any easier..

by:

Parts were on time and what I ordered!

by:

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

by:

This company has by far the best customer service I have experienced in a long time. The majority of my order was received promptly with the remainder being damaged in transit. I received at least 4 emails about this and the issue was resolved within 12 hours. I would highly recommend eTrailer to others.

Are you sure about that spring seat center to center distance? The closest axles we offer are a 5200 or a 6000 lb axle with a 71-1/2 spring seat center to center dimension. All have a hub face to hub face dimension of 86-1/2 inches. I've provided a diagram showing these dimensions. We have a total of 4 axles available with these dimensions....

  • Replacing Existing 3500 lb Axle With a 5200 lb Axle
When replacing a trailer axle, the spring seat spacing isn't super-critical because you can always relocate those by obtaining new spring seats and having them tacked into place where you need them. The hub face to hub face distance is what's critical. What's the hub face dimension of your current axles? • Replacement 5200 lb Axle
We have a Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 8327816-EB that measures 86-1/2" from hub face to hub face. The catch is that this axle has 71-1/2" spring centers. It will also have a 6 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern. The spring centers do not match up so this may not work for your application. In this case you might have to special order the axle you need.
