The heavy-duty Timbren Axle-Less system combines Timbren's standard 3,500-lb Axle-Less system components with 2,000-lb AEON rubber springs, giving you a suspension system that is perfect for your small, off-road trailer. It allows you to use parts that would typically only fit a larger trailer on your undersized trailer. Add brakes for improved control. Get greater ground clearance and increased durability by installing bigger tires and wheels. This makes the heavy-duty Axle-Less suspension system ideal for off-road use.


Note: The Timbren Axle-Less suspension system may require additional support on your trailer. If your trailer does not have a crossmember above the spot where you want to install the Timbren system, you may need to reinforce the frame. You can accomplish this three ways. First, you can retrofit the trailer with a crossmember. Second, you can build out the trailer frame. Third, you can use standard, 2-inch steel tubing to connect the 2 Timbren suspensions together using the built-in square hole on each unit.


Ground Clearance

Ride on rubber with Timbren's Axle-Less trailer suspension system. This one-of-a-kind suspension consists of two separate units, each containing rugged steel arms and two strong, hollow rubber springs. Overall, the system safely and effectively absorbs road shock, minimizes trailer bounce and rattle - regardless of load size - and helps to protect your trailer's components and cargo. Built-in camber and toe-in keep your trailer tracking straight to minimize tire wear. Integrated hangers attach to your trailer's frame. And 2-inch holes make it easy to reinforce your trailer's frame by adding standard, 2-inch-square steel tubing (if needed).


The Axle-Less independent suspension system replaces your trailer's existing leaf spring suspension and can eliminate the need for an axle. The independent action of the suspension reduces roll when your trailer is cornering and allows you to maximize ground clearance and minimize deck height. Your trailer can have the same side-to-side clearance as your tow vehicle. And the low deck height makes it easy to load cargo from either the rear or the side.


Because you're riding on rubber, your trailer will ride smoothly and comfortably, whether you're navigating rocky terrain or highway asphalt.


Timbren Axle-Less Suspension Parts

Components

  1. The AEON progressive-rate main spring supports the weight of your trailer and cargo and easily absorbs road shock. It is constructed of heavy-duty, hollow rubber.
  2. The rebound spring minimizes trailer bounce, rattle and bottoming out. It keeps the suspension under constant tension and ensures that the main spring compresses and expands in a controlled fashion. And it delivers a smooth, stable ride - regardless of how much cargo is on the trailer.
  3. The trailing arm and integrated hanger attach the suspension to the side and bottom of the trailer frame.
  4. The control arm carries the spindle and the hub. It pivots on strong, long-lasting urethane bushings that never require lubrication.
  5. The EZ lube spindle is simple to grease. If damaged, it can be removed and replaced, saving you both time and money. The spindle also includes a 4-bolt brake flange for simple mounting of trailer brakes.
  6. The hub is not included with this model.
  7. The built-in square hole accepts standard 2-inch tubing. If there is no crossmember above the suspension, you can easily add support to your trailer's frame by inserting 2-inch steel tubing through the hole on each suspension unit and then bolting the tubing into place.

Timbren Axle-Less Suspension versus Leaf Springs

Leaf Spring Example

The Axle-Less suspension's progressive spring is a definitive upgrade over leaf springs. Although leaf springs deliver a stable ride when supporting a load, a trailer with leaf springs will bounce and rattle when it's empty or supporting a light or off-center load. On the other hand, your trailer can bottom out on bumpy roads if the load is too heavy. The AEON progressive-rate springs of the Axle-Less suspension always deliver the same reliable performance, no matter the load size. As more weight is added to the trailer, the springs compress and become stiffer, offering more support for heavy loads. And because they rebound more slowly than leaf springs, the AEON springs do a better job of absorbing road shock, thereby keeping your trailer from bouncing and rattling when you're carrying a light load. So with this versatile system you will enjoy a smooth ride whether you're towing an empty trailer or a hefty load.


Unlike leaf springs, Timbren's Axle-Less suspension units operate independently of one another. Each spring activates only when needed. This reduces roll and delivers top-notch performance, even when you're hauling off-center loads. When your trailer with leaf springs takes a turn, one side of the suspension compresses and takes on more weight, and the other side becomes looser and bounces. This causes rattle and can make the trailer lean to one side. But when your trailer with the Axle-Less suspension takes a turn, one side compresses and becomes more rigid to absorb the weight, and the other side expands to normal height to help steady the load and minimize bounce and rattle. The load stays better balanced, even if it is off-center.


Timbren Axle-Less Suspension versus Torsion Axles

Torsion Axle Example

Timbren's Axle-Less trailer suspension system is a great alternative to torsion axles. While both systems allow either side of the trailer's suspension to operate independently, only Axle-Less suspensions are actually separate units. Torsion axles still require a bar that spans the bottom of your trailer, whereas Timbren's system can eliminate the need for a thru axle - giving you the same amount of ground clearance from the front of your trailer to the rear. It also allows Axle-Less suspensions to fit any trailer width - unlike torsion axles, which have to be fitted to an exact frame width.


Axle-Less suspensions operate in a smoother, less stressful manner than torsion axles. Torsion axles use a twisting motion, where the bar inside the axle tube rolls against rubber cords or a rubber wall to create compression and resistance. The up-and-down motion of the main spring and the side-to-side motion of the rebound spring in Timbren's Axle-Less suspension work together to provide smooth, consistent compression - with no twisting - that results in a better ride and less stress on the suspension's components.


Installing the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension

Whether you are building a trailer or retrofitting your existing trailer with the Axle-Less system, you must make certain that the trailer's frame is both perfectly square and sturdy enough to support a heavy load without the aid of a thru axle.


Install Option 1

There are three ways to install the Axle-Less suspension. The easiest method, which is recommended if you are replacing axles on your trailer, is to install a piece of 2-inch-square tubing (sold separately - available at most weld shops) through the integrated hole in the Axle-Less suspension. Then all you need to do is bolt the suspension to the side of the trailer's frame with three bolts (not included).


Install Option 2

The second option for installation is to fabricate an inboard extension plate that attaches the trailer's frame to the Axle-Less suspension.


Install Option 3

The third method of installation is to bolt the Axle-Less suspension's hanger to the trailer's frame and to an existing crossmember that is in the area where you want to install the suspension.


With both the second and third options, you must use three bolts to attach the suspension to the side of the frame. And you also have to use two or three bolts to attach the suspension to the bottom of the frame extension, or crossmember. Both the second and third methods of installation will eliminate the need for a thru axle and provide the most clearance.


Measuring Diagram

Timbren's Axle-Less suspension units should be installed directly across from one another. Before mounting the units, measure back from the coupler and mark the frame to make sure that the two distance measurements (A and B) are within 1/8 inch of each other. Then you can drill holes through the frame and attach the hangers with Grade-5, half-inch bolts (not included).

axle and a 3500# spindle combination. I am running a original 14" tire.

I was looking for a low profile axle system for my motorcycle trailer. The primary requirement was to be able to load my motorcycle by myself which required a low-profile trailer. With the 4" drop provided by Timbren, this setup turned out great. I originally intended on using ramps but after I swapped the leaf spring axle out with the Timbren, I found I was able to ride my motorcycle on/off without the need for the ramps.

Originally, I was going to go axle-less but I found when torquing down the assembly to my frame it started to compress the aluminum rail. To take the pressure off the frame I added the 2" bar from axle to axle. Pulls smooth and effortlessly.

I've had several people comment on the trailer height with one wanting to buy the trailer from me. This person worked at the local Honda Dealership. He thought it was a great design and I would imagine he's seen a variety of trailers come through his lot.

The other option I considered was a torsion axle but I was looking for the lowest profile I could get. Therefore, cost was not a key factor. I also like the soft ride the Timbren system provides. Not sure if the torsion design would have been as smooth over bumpy roads. Regardless, I'm pleased with how this project came out.

Its been a year since Ive installed the new axles on my trailer my comments above still hold true. Im very pleased with the ride quality of the system after a year. The trailer tracks true and has hauled many things other than my motorcycle. Even empty it doesnt hop around like the original stock straight axle did. No regrets on the purchase.

Used this on a camping trailer behind our Jeep. The suspension handled 1000 miles of washboard gravel roads and mild rocky offroading with ease. We don't drive gently and had the trailer airborne at one point. The brackets that we opted to fabricate for them were straightforward and simple to install. I especially like the ground clearance under the trailer that you gain due to the lack of a solid traditional axle. The ride quality overall was excellent, especially given where we took it. In hindsight we should have gotten the 4" travel version as it may have been able to soak up deep ruts at 40mph a bit better. Only mild complaint is that the powdercoating on the leading edges had already begun to flake off when we received the suspension. I hit it with a can of spray paint, but I would have hoped it would be more durable. Overall, I will definitely be purchasing this axle-less suspension again for my next trailer build.

Ashley, the 4 version doesnt actually give it more travel. Its the same was the standard or the system as far as suspension travel. What the 4 system does it lift the height of the trailer from the ground, depending on what youre doing with the trailer. For an off road trailer I personally would do the 4raise for added ground clearance, just gotta make sure the trailer doesnt get top heavy. The standard system is good for pretty much all uses and the system is for when you need a really low deck height for a lawn mower or go kart for example. I appreciate your review as I am going to be building a small off road campingbug-out trailer to tow behind my lifted FJ cruiser. I havent decided if I am going to go with the standard height or the 4 lift as I am going to be running the same off road tires toyo RT that I have on my FJ on the trailer and I want the trailer to sit around the same height. Did you add brakes to yours? Im planning on either running electric brakes or if available in am going to run surge brakes.

Michael, My trailer was so light even fully loaded that I didnt see the need for brakes and never missed having them.I stand corrected: We did get the 4 lift, but the non-HD instead of the HD because the specs said that it had a bit more travel. and we didnt need the weight capacity. That being said, Im still happy with how this suspension performs. My trailer is on 31s on a stock Cherokee.

Excellent, helpful customer service sold me this product, and trust me when I say it's worth the price tag. Pulled the old axle and leaf spring off a 60's era Bantam and swapped out for this with a support bar in between. Bumped up tires to 315/75r16 BFG TA/KO's to match my rig and am amazed at how much better this trailer now pulls. Empty it wad bouncing all over the place with the old axle and leaf spring setup. Now I hardly even know it's there. Was very easy to install, took a couple hours but I am happy with how it turned out. A+++ product and customer service!

They are GREAT! I put them on a small offroad trailer that has followed me all over some really rough roads in remote Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. They have performed flawlessly, helped the trailer tow extremely well, and were the single best upgrade I did to that trailer. Very much looking forward to another summer of exploring! Massive upgrade to the stock axle leaf spring combo, and I have had the opportunity to show it off to alot of fellow overlanders. I cant speak high enough of them. I also purchased a set of airbags for my vehicle which unfortunately have not held up terribly well. I have had to field repair one once already, and neither holds air terribly well. Truth be told they seem very underdesigned for the job they perform. From my super secret high tech pocket internet window.

I think their axle-less design is very clever. The build quality of the suspension part looks good. I have heartburn over the spindle build quality. The spindle is mounted to the suspension and then the trailer wheel mounts on the spindle. The spindles I received are warped from welding. The plate that bolts onto the suspension does not mount flat due to this warping. I called Timbren. The gentleman that helped me was very pleasant. I described the problems and he said he would check his inventory and call me back. He did call me back and said they are all like that. He said get out the grinder and fix what you can and just tighten the bolts super tight, maybe the gap will go away. Really? Wow. The other problems are a LOT of weld spatter where the bolts are supposed to fit and they made a bend in the plate too close to the bolt holes so two bolt heads hit the bend and dont fit flat against the part they are supposed to hold together. Yikes! I am taking the spindles to a machine shop to fix them but I would not have ordered this Timbren stuff had I been warned before hand. So, fair warning.

While we did not come across any major issues, we did however discover a few areas where the quality could be improved, specifically in the areas you brought to our attention. The following improvements have been made to improve the manufacturing process: - Robotic welder gun re-programmed so that it stops from getting too close to the areas adjacent to the mounting holes of the outboard arm and control arm. This will minimize weld spatter. - The distortion of the flat plates is due to the high degree of heat generated during welding. We conducted experiments, changing the sequence of welding operations until we were successful in minimizing the distortion. We apologize if our customer service in addressing your concerns was insufficient at the time of your phone call. Timbren is an ISO 9001:2008 company with an excellent reputation for providing customers with quality products that are well-performing and easy to install.

Built a custom trailer to haul an ATV on some bad rural roads in Baja.
I used the 2" drop axel-less suspension to allow for full size tires and wheels yet keep center of gravity low. Easy to install on exposed frame, but note that a required brace or 2" square steel bar may be needed and sourced on your own. The finish is not very durable and does not survive the normal bumps, wrench scrapes and scratches of installation; plan on some touch up once installed. Pay attention to the spindle clearance and wheel offset.

I live in California and I'm building a custom off-road camping trailer for overlanding/camping, mainly for the Sierra Nevada backroads, but possibly for longer trips in a variety of terrain. I had read about the axle-less suspension from Timbren and found that it's a popular choice for these types of trailers. In my searches, etrailer.com came up frequently. So I posted a few questions on their web site, and got a prompt response with tons of great information and a complete parts list for what I needed. Much appreciated! The order handling and shipping was very prompt, and all my parts were shipped in one shipment which I definitely appreciate since I don't get packages delivered to my door. I received all the packages today. Great customer support, prompt handling, and quality products. I gave 4/5 stars because the packaging could have been a little better. One of the boxes was a little banged up in the corners, but the content was unharmed as far as I can tell. I've also received follow-up emails to ensure that I received everything and that it was in good shape. Overall, I'd highly recommend the company, and I won't hesitate to buy from etrailer again! My trailer build will probably take a few months to complete with all the bells and whistles, but I'll be sure to post pictures from the process.

  • Are Timbren Axle-Less Systems Good for replacing Axles on a Boat Trailer
    Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR2KHDS01 are great options for replacing regular axles on a trailer. The only exclusion is that they should only be used for single or tandem axle set ups. Three axles are not recommended because with the Timbren system there are no equalizers between each set to help distribute the weight. I have linked a video review for you.

  • Is It Actually Easy to Replace Spindle on 2,000 lb Timbren Axle-Less System
    That's a good question, and it wouldn't be just the spindle itself that gets replaced on the Timbren Axle-Less systems, it would be the whole spindle arm that would need to be replaced if there was any damage. If you take a look at the photo I added of the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # ASR2000S01 you can see that the spindle arm is a separate part. So to replace the spindle you would just unbolt the arm and then bolt on the new arm which has the spindle on it. As for a...

  • Need Axle for Boat Trailer That Measures 73-1/2 Inches From Spring Center to Spring Center
    The closest option that we offer would be an axle with the spring seats welded at 74 inches but keep in mind that this could put your leaf springs in a bind if your spring center measures 73-1/2 inches. I have included a link to these axles for you. The only other option that I have would be to go with an axle-less system. I have included a link to those options as well.
