Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

When I opened the box I was missing the 4 hubs. I called CS 2:30 on a Wednesday and notified them. I was going out of town Friday to fix a trailer. I told Bailey with CS this and she said I will have them by Friday I be darn 10am Friday they were at my door. I am Houston not very close to them. I guess they sent them air. Anyway excellent CS and the parts are quality as well I have ordered from them before Thanks Bailey.

by:

everything was shipped and rapped great. all working great a year latter.

I'm currently installing it to replace a practically good Axle but the Spindle on the original Axle doesn't have Cotter Pins. A friend suggested I change the bearings since the wheel was wobbling but after I changed them, the wheel continued to come off. After watching U-Tube Videos, everyone of them had Cotter Pins, so I decided to be safe rather than sorry and replace the Axle with one of yours plus now ALL the bearings are NEW with New Hubs, WELL WORTH THE MONEY I SPENT.

by:

Easy ordering, axle arrived on time and no damage. The axle worked perfect for my camping trailer, would recommend your company any time.

by:

I purchased two of these axles to replace my old square ones. They appear to be good quality but they arrived damaged. The grease fittings on the ends were smashed because packaging wasn't adequate. I've emailed back and forth and was shipped the wrong parts for replacement. In the end I was told I'd have to cut the spindles off and replace them. All I need is new grease zerks that thread on the ends of the axles. Be prepared to purchase these on your own because customer service is subpar on a remedy and the way they package them for shipping does not prevent damage.

by:

Needed to beef up my little trailer project from a 4 lug to a 5 lug st up.These were perfect, and arrived quickly!

by:

Axle and hubs were good quality. Dimensions were spot on 48" center hole of perch to center hole of perch. But.......some knucklehead built my trailer with 47" centers - so I ground off the perches and relocated on 47" centers. Took just over an hour to cut, measure, grind and weld old perches on new centers.

There was one odd phenomenon I've not seen before. The cotter pin hole was not driven through the center axis of the axle but rather offset to one side. Maybe that's how things are made these days.....or someone sneezed at the factory and the cotter pin holes moved. Nonetheless it's installed and works.

My Etrailer salesman, James X-72990 was pleasant in taking my order but told me the axle wouldn't be here for over a week. Then - he must have done something and the axle showed up in 2 days.....(Thanks James) Good product, good experience.

Joe (Bucks County Pennsylvania)

by:

The axle is of great quality, I had to have mine fabricated a bit to match the old spring seats.but I wouldn't hesitate to buy the axle. The shipping and customer service is top notch from etrailer. Excellent products, services and shipping...

by:

Just what I ordered, had to modify to fit my 1720lb Harbor Freight trailer as far as the spring seats. I knew that going in so no big deal. Great help and info from the order person.

Matched it up with bigger tires and etrailer finders!!!

by:

The original axle on my trailer suffered a catastrophic event, making it absolutely unusable. The replacement from etrailer fit like a glove and installed in a very reasonable amount of time. I couldn’t be happier.

by:

Axle worked just as it should. The best things about this company are their selection, speed of processing and communication. The best customer service of any company. Ashley was extremely helpful and quick to answer my questions. Terrific service company

by:

The axle and hub/bearings were great, very good quality.
Just fyi, regarding the u-bolt kit, 2 of the 4 u-bolts supplied were 3/8 UNC thread and the other 2 were UNF--- but all the nuts were UNF --- fortunately I had some spare UNC nuts on hand. Very pleased with the quality and speedy delivery.

by:

Unwrapped, looks good not yet assembled

by:

Fast delivery, well packaged, so the axle wouldn't get damaged during shipping! Would for sure order again, and highly recommend etrailer!

by:

I might have measured it wrong, but it still worked fine. I just didn't know where to measure from. My axle was broken, and couldn't get measured good.

by:

Perfect fit, was hoping it was made in USA

by:

Great product , and very good replacement and upgrade form my old one.

by:

Good: Excellent service by Lori B. Full order arrived quickly.
Acceptable: Light surface rust on the axle mount. Nothing major. Otherwise five stars.
Would recommend to others.

by:

Axle fit perfectly. Delivered quickly. And after a year it is still working great.

by:

Would give it a 5 except one of the grease fittings was damaged in shipping. The axle should be shipped without the grease fittings attached. Shippers stand the axle on end, crushing the fittings on the end.

by:

Had a shipping problem not etrailers fault they shipped another axle right away very quickly customer friendly for sure

  • Availability of 3,500 lb Trailer Axle that is 89 inches Long that Has 4 inch Drop
The etrailer axle part # e72GR matches everything you need but you didn't mention the spring seat to spring seat dimension you have which is only piece of the puzzle missing. The spring seat dimension is the attachment point for the axle to the trailer so this has to be exact. This axle has a 74 inch dimension for that and if that matches what you have it would work really well. All of the axles we have that match what you listed have this dimension as 74 inches so if you have something...

These both match the hub-face and spring-center measurements you referenced, they have the 4" drop, and they also use the standard 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you mentioned. Yes, there is. You will want the Demco 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness item # DM8555002. This harness puts a 7-way connector in the bed of your 2023 Silverado and allows you to keep the one on your bumper. This makes hooking up to your 5th wheel trailer easier and more convenient. The harness plugs into existing wiring so you don't have to cut into your new trucks factory wiring harness. I have linked an installation video below.
