Bearing Buddy installed diagram

Bearing Buddy Operation

Replace your existing grease cap with a Bearing Buddy to ensure a safe, easy way to monitor and control the level of grease in your axle hub. To adjust the amount of grease in the hub, use a grease gun to add more through the appropriate fitting. Adding grease moves the Bearing Buddy spring-loaded piston outward 1/8".

The O-ring inside the barrel of the Bearing Buddy maintains a seal from the outside. The interior of the Bearing Buddy is pressurized, preventing water from entering the barrel and diluting the grease.

An automatic pressure-relief feature is built into the Bearing Buddy. When the device is full, grease will seep around the edges of the piston and into the barrel. This prevents overfilling that can damage the inner seal.

You can manually check the grease level in your Bearing Buddy by pressing on the edge of the piston. If you can rock or move the piston, the hub is properly filled.

works great..hauling tailler from Yuma AZ to Showlow AZ 200 ft elevation to 5600 ft level some 7 plus hours one way.. have done drive several times this month

by:

These bearings work perfectly and I would definitely recommend to anyone for their trailer and never have to worry about them going bad. Just check once a year or so that there is still grease in them and may need to add more. Just stay on top of proper amount of grease in them and they are good for many, many years. I have friends that use them and they can admit as to how good they are and how long they last as long as you keep up on checking to make sure the proper amount of grease is in them. Hope this helps and you can be confident they will last and hold up for your trailering needs.

by:

Great addition to any trailer used in wet, sloppy conditions. Not just boat trailers. I added a pair to an ATV trailer that is used in very muddy terrain.
Very easy to install, but care should be taken to be sure you select the correct size as there are a number of sizes that are very close together. I suggest removing the old grease cap and measuring the inside diameter with a caliper.
Also the addition of bearing buddies makes checking the amount of grease and refilling your hubs much easier to do.
The Stainless variety are a couple bucks more but worth every penny.
Would Highly recommend to anyone.

by:

I bought a used trailer, and one of the bearing hub caps was not there. I have bought 3 different sets of hub caps, but none of them fit. I called E Trailer, and they sent me these. They fit!!!! Makes me happy!!

by:

These things are great! Easily the best part of my Harbor Freight trailer now. ;) Fit is perfect, and installation was very simple. I pre-filled them with grease, using about 1/2 of a 3oz mini grease cartridge on each. Hammered them on and then filled them up the rest of the way with a few squeezes of the grease gun.

by:

Love the Bearing Buddies received from etrailer. We put them on a motorcycle trailer and they work awesome.
Thanks etrailer for helping me order the correct parts!

by:

Perfect fit and quality construction. The bearing buddies will protect the bearings on my motorcycle trailer. Makes getting grease into the bearings simple and convenient.
The grease cap was a replacement for one that came off of my travel trailer.

by:

The 2.047" is a perfect replacement for the 52mm [hardware store] dust cap. Nice, snug fit.

by:

Originally I had to tip my trailer back crawl underneath to get to the grease fittings underneath and the grease would ooze out of the bearing caps and inner seals, then consequently spinning all over my rims and making a big mess. I'm more than pleased with my new bearing buddies as they couldn't be any more accessible and that they are spring loaded to keep the grease where it's meant to be, on the bearings and also make it easy to know when they are full.

by:

Awesome, the bearing Buddy fit like a charm. Great service as always

by:

Installed Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors on a boat trailer to keep the bearings pressurized during launch and retrieve to keep water and grit out of the bearings. They had adequate clearance from the axle so the piston did not rub and they had a good tight fit when driven on with a hammer and block of wood. Quality is excellent.

The pressure relief feature and spring loaded piston are great since previous zerk hubs already on the axle did not have that feature and the grease seal blew off when pumping grease into the bearings. Be sure to measure your hub diameter accurately before ordering.

The Bearing Buddy protectors are still working well.

by:

I have a harbor freight 4x8' folding trailer and I purchased these bearing buddies for longer trips. They work great keeping the axle bearings lubricated and pushing out the used grease as well.

The installation was a bit difficult on one side, but this is due to the trailer itself. I was able to get it square and pressed in with a hammer and block of wood. The other side was a much easier install.

Haven't lost the end caps yet either, after a few hundred miles of use!

After 1 year of use, these are still working perfectly and have made my trailer maintenance much easier.

by:

After much searching, I finally found the correct size bearing protectors for an older Harbor Freight trailer. I had been searching for a metric size and the BB2047SS protectors fit great! The 2.047" size is exact and with the stainless steel material, the size has to be exact, the stainless does not give. These protectors will probably outlast my trailer. The rubber caps are a nice addition to keep dirt off of the grease fitting. Overall, very impressed. Will be purchasing a set of these for my other twin axle trailer.

These bearing protectors are working out great, probably have 20 trips to the mountains hauling equipment 230 miles round trip and they are holding up great. Surprisingly the rubber dust caps have also stayed on and held up in severe weather conditions with both heat and snow. Bearings and seal were also replaced and are all holding up well now that the grease stays where its supposed to. Overall, a great product!

by:

Great product. Installed 8 on a trailer restoration. Very easy to install.

by:

Perfect protection for wheel bearings at a very low cost. I used Bearing Buddies on a trailer that I built 20 years ago. After many uses and spending 2 decades in the California sun and rain, I sold that trailer and the hubs and bearings looked and worked as if they were new. My buyer was delighted. This is the most effective and least expensive protection you can give your trailer.
Tip: measure the hub I.D. carefully and buy the Bearing Buddy set that most closely matches your hub bore. Remember that they have an interference fit. TIGHT fit is very important.

Couldn't find the appropriate fit for my trailer in Canada, but the company that manufactured the trailer recommended etrailer as a likely source - and they were right. The review that indicated that this was the right buddy bearing for my particular trailer was exactly right as well. I picked up the parts yesterday and installed them the same day. The fit was perfect, the instructions were perfect and install was perfect. I feel way more confident about hauling my stuff to Newfoundland with these bearings taken care of. Thanks Etrailer.

Thanks for the follow up to my review - Im currently getting ready for the 3000 km road trip to Newfoundland with a fully loaded trailer. My Buddy Grease Caps are loaded with grease and have no doubt they will perform well throughout the trip.

by:

I gave this product and excellent rating because etrailer carries it, it is going to be mounted onto the harbor freight trailer item # 90154 hubs. Now from what I've read this is not an exact size the size difference is minimal, but should fit, only time will if they hold up to the rigors of use, but I'm glad this option is available ! Any product that can make such a dirty task of greasing bearings easier has to be great. Shipping was fast!

Have not mounted them yet as life got in the way, but will be installing them soon, will update when i start using the trailer, but as before the great things is that e-trailer carries this model for this particular trailer.

by:

I use bearing buddies on all my trailers and highly recommend them especially for boat trailers that go under water regularly. Buying from etrailer was a little more expensive than the big box store, but I was impressed that they called the manufacturer of my Trailer to be sure they sold me the correct size. Imagine: an online company that cares enough to check ahead of time! etrailer earned my business.

I bought my trailer from another store with the regular bearing caps on the hubs. I bought the bearing buddies from them later and they did not fit. After a little research I found out that what I needed was .2047inch and what I had bought earlier was 1.98inch. Etrailer has several sizes, .2047inch fit perfect. Got them in the mail in 3 days.

I have a odd size hub on my utility trailer and was having a tough time finding bearing buddy's that would fit correctly:( You guys came through with the correct size:) The bearing buddy's are a perfect fit and have met my expectations for quality! Definitely Recommend:)

by:

This is the only way you should haul your boat trailer around if in and out of the water. The bearings are under constant pressure keeping out water and lubing also. This is the 3nd set I have bought and have them on all my trailers. I stated years ago and I have never had any issues sense I started using the Bearing Buddy. Pays for it self over and over again. The longer you have the trailer with the Bearing Buddy the more time and money you save!

  • Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors For a Detail K2 MMT5x7G Utility Trailer
I was able to verify with Detail K2 the 2.047" hub bore size is what they currently use on their trailers. They did mention you could have a different size depending on the age of the trailer as they did not always use the same size hubs. Since you mentioned the Bearing Buddy Chrome # BB2047 or Stainless Steel # BB2047SS were to small to fit you will likely need the Chrome # BB2080 or Stainless # BB2080SS. These are for a 2.080" hub which is only 33 thousands of an inch larger in diameter.

  • Why Wouldn't a Trailer Come Equipped with Bearing Buddies
Some axles have EZ lube spindles which means they have a grease fitting mounted at the end of the spindle already. In those cases you would not want a Bearing Buddy. Since the EZ lube spindles are more common than non-EZ lube spindles the Bearing Buddies aren't seen as frequently as you would think. Aside from that they are a great product. We only warn people to try and be careful not to over fill the hubs with grease as that can be pretty easy to do. This causes the seal to blow out.
