Overall, I’m completely happy with the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty controller. The design and execution is elegant, the installation is fairly simple, and the completed appearance -in my opinion- is unmatched. I’m slightly annoyed that the REDARC product doesn’t come with some basic accessories you need, leaving you to hunt for and assemble things they know you’ll need like a fuse, fuse-holder, and the basic wiring harness to even connect to the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty. So, if you’re price shopping different brake controllers I recommend factoring in about another $50 worth of accessories into the overall cost of the product when considering the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty and comparing it to other brake controllers. The folks at etrailer, of course, make that simple by suggesting the items you’ll need automatically.
There is one “feature” of the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty that is made VERY clear in the owner’s manual, that perhaps should be made clearer when advertising the product: The Brake Sense wire, which is the wire that connects to your brake lights and tells the controller you’ve activated the tow vehicle brakes, is bi-directional. In other words, in normal proportional operation it senses the 12 volts from your brake lights, but when in manual mode it also outputs 12 volts with the intention to activate your brake lights if you manually activate the REDARC controller. This matters a lot if your tow vehicle has factory automatic braking and collision avoidance or adaptive cruise control as the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty can back feed these systems and cause a lot of damage. When the Mazda is in adaptive cruise control, or if the factory collision-avoidance system activates, the Mazda also activates the brake lights. A blocking diode is the solution and the placement is critical.
I have a 2020 Mazda CX-5 with AWD and their turbo 2.5-liter engine and the factory adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance systems. The vehicle has a 2,000-lb towing capacity. I am towing a teardrop styled camping trailer that weighs 1,200-lbs, so I’m well within the capability of the vehicle. Trailer brakes just enhances the safety. Mazda is curiously quiet on their recommendation of how to properly wire this, and the dealership really wasn’t any additional help. This set me to find schematics and figure it out on my own.
The solution included two devices. The REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty, and the Tekonsha model # 118746 Trailer wiring module; both from etrailer. I installed the Tekonsha trailer light wiring system first, then installed the REDARC controller. Instead of connecting the REDARC brake sense wire to the normal brake lights, I connected it to the positive side of the wire that feeds the rear center brake light on the Mazda. This is where I installed a 50-cent Schottky diode to allow the brake light to send +12v to the REDARC controller but prevent the REDARC controller from sending +12v back to the center brake light when the brake controller is in manual mode. I’ve included a schematic in this review as one of the photos; I hope this helps others.
The result is beautiful. You get the aesthetically pleasing factory appearance of the single-knob REDARC controller in the dash, that operates perfectly in both automatic proportional mode and in manual mode, AND the Mazda’s adaptive cruise control and automatic collision avoidance system still operates perfectly and will also automatically operate the REDARC controller and your trailer brakes. The REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty can install in any orientation, which makes installation a breeze, the proportional braking is smooth and confident. I’m extremely pleased with both products: The REDARC controller and the Tekonsha wiring model # 118746 and thrilled with eTrailer.com who offered both at a reasonable price and reliable shipping/delivery.

The idea of a clean install without cluttering up the dash or legroom is a real advantage. The size is amall enough so the unit can easily be placed in a hidden location. I was able to fasten it to a solid metal brace and still able to get my hand up to disconnect one end of the wiring harness without removing anything should I ever need to.

Installed in my 2021 Frontier. There is a round knock-out plug where the ignition/key fits on previous models, so it was easy to mount the switch there. Fastened the controller to the sidewall under the dash, behind and to the left of the diagnostic port. A couple of zip ties and done. The hardest part was drilling holes for the control knob.

Nice compact unit. Easy to install with the plug in kit for my Honda Pilot. Tricky to "tie" in place, however with some contorting - I managed well enough. Wish this came with a face plate for the Honda Pilot for a blank spot - I ended up using a blank plate and "form Fitting" the control.
Shipping took too long. I thought it was lost in the mail. Other items ordered from a similar location arrived in a reasonable time - this took a long time.

I wasn't going to post a review, but I will share a few experiences I had with the Redarc brake controller I purchased. My 2017 Chevy Traverse came pre wired for a brake controller so all I had to do for the install was use a GM wiring harness from the brake controller to the factory wiring and it was plug and play! :)
90% of the time the controller has been amazing, however there were three different occasions where I tested my brakes after hooking up my RV and found that the brake controller was not working. After problem solving, I found the same root cause on every time the issue arose. I had to reach under my dash, disconnect the brake controller from the vehicle entirely, plug it back in, and let it reboot and recalibrate. I concluded that the software in the controller occasionally crashes and needs to be fully rebooted due to bugs in the software or a hardware issue.
Overall the controller has been amazing, but it was frustrating and unsafe it needed to be disconnected and rebooted on a few occasions. I was definitely glad that I always test my brakes before leaving campgrounds and going public roads.

Installed this on 2017 GMC Seirra to pull a 30ft tandem axle camper trailer. Installation is just plug and play. Yes you have to purchase a wire harness specific to your vehicle. Very simple installation. The hardest part is deciding where to mount it. The videos are helpful. Followed instructions and it worked like it was supposed to the first time out. I really like that it can be mounted out of sight so you don't bang your knees on it. Only thing visible is the knob. I even put that on a homemade bracket that just fits on my console and I even remove that and tuck the wire out of the way when not pulling a trailer.

Only in partial installation. Putting in the controller box is super simple in my Tacoma. Just remove kick plate and molding on door entry. Plug in to existing Toyota pre wired plug, attach ground wire, and mount controller box on kick plate. Wish I knew of the switch insert that fit my Tacoma was available when I ordered the brake controller. Didn't know they were available until I read installation instructions for the brake controller. Now waiting for switch insert to complete installation. I expect the controller to work after all this installation activity.

See my other review. Had a problem with the controller on my Tacoma. Contacted REDARC and they provided me an upgraded model. I installed and it worked great. Sold the Tacoma and purchased a Titan. I like the controller so much I bought another one knowing the responsive service if I had a problem. First time out with the new truck and the controller was very responsive and provided great breaking without any jerking. Easy to adjust the controller to the needs of the trailer brakes. Best controller I have had!

So far the Liberty has been fine. Install was pretty straight forward. The learning progress took a bit longer than expected but its now calibrated and working fine. Other than me picking the cheapest shipping and waiting 3.5 weeks for it to arrive via covid shipping. My only complaint is my own fault again which is that the one I ordered didnt come with a universal harness (pigtail) that plugs in to the controller. IMO there is not enough warnings in bold that say you need one. The Elite comes with it as part of the kit. I'm not sure why this option is even offered on the liberty. Needless to say I figured this out a week after ordering, and I'm still waiting for the harness to arrive. Had I known this I would has either gone for the Elite, or the CURT spectrum, because CURT actually makes a plug and play harness for my 2014 VW Touareg, and Redarc doesn't. I didn't bother going to VW for the OEM plug and wires as per the etrailer install video. In Canada that was over $xx from the dealer and [online store] wasn't any better. I found the CURT harness PN:51522 for Audi Q5, SQ5 & Q7 for $xx and snipped the CURT end off it (got here in 3 days). Hence why buying the CURT Spectrum would have been nice. Currently I'm using female spade connectors (not recommended for long term) to hook up the controller until the harness arrives.

Expedited shipping was super fast with no problems. I installed the unit myself and it was fairly simple. I recommend getting the exact fitting wire harness (huge time saver) and I’d recommend getting and exact fit knock out to install the dial in. (Another big time saver). I drilled a hole in my own blank or knock out thingy and I’m pleased with it but it took a little time. I’ve got a 2010 Honda Pilot. Funny thing, after rushing to install the brake controller, our trailer had to go in for repairs before we even completed the transaction. It will be another month before I actually use the brake controller.

I am a 42 year master mechanic and have been RVing all my life. I have never used Redarc brand and have the utmost trust in etrailer so when I called support asking about this brand, I ordered it on their recommendation. I have to say that the installation was very quick (less than 15 minutes for me, but this is my profession). The aspect of a hidden controller really pleased me on my wife's Explorer not having a bulky module exposed. Redarc adapter harness and drilled a single hole in the fuse cover for the gain control and actuator really looks clean. The controller had great adjustable range with a predictable, positive engagement. I have used Tekonsha religiously for years and this product excels in every aspect. Price was right, shipping speedy, and etrailer's support was excellent as always.

Fast shipment. I installed this in my 2016 Nissan Frontier for towing my 7x12 enclosed trailer. This trailer brake controller works perfect. Much smoother braking than the module I had. The unit tucks away neatly under the dash instead of tying up much needed legroom. I drilled a hole in the the small rubber removable cover to the right of the steering column for the dial switch. I mounted the module box to the support that holds the brackets for the hood latch and etc., with a couple good quality zip ties, under the dash to the left of the steering column. The dial works well and the LED indicator is a nice feature so you know when you have a good connection. There is enough cable for pretty much any mounting configuration you want to do.

The Redarc Liberty brake controller was a bit disappointing. It has an overall cheap feel and presentation. The control box was dropped by me out of the box onto the floor of the truck and when I picked it up I thought "happy meal toy"... the case had come apart. The button is dinky... about the size of the end of my index finger. The emblem isn't (and can't be) aligned with zero which makes the install look amatureish. The led requires you drill a second hole in perfect alignment 7mm apart which is a horrible design for DIY and just unnecessary. The good...it is hidden and once installed appears well integrated on just about any part of the dash. For upwards of 150$ I expected better "quality".

I ordered this setup for my 21 Tacoma with the tow package. The harness mated perfectly with the Toyota receptacle under the left front kick panel, the mounting panel looks factory and fit in the dash on the left side of the steering wheel, and the module is mounted to the inside of the kick panel. It is a tight fit, but I was able to get it all in there. I have not had a chance to use it yet. That will be in a month from now.

This brake controller is exactly as advertised. Very smooth transition of trailer brakes! Very very simple to use! Out of the way installation. Super easy access and ability to instantly apply trailer only brakes if needed such as sway control or going downhill. And it looks factory installed!

So far so good. It operates as it should. Super smooth without any pushing or pulling. I’m very happy to have chosen this over the regular bulky brake controllers out there. The brain box hides out of the way under the steering column and the switch fit in a switch blank using a vehicle specific bezel and it looks stock. Could not ask for more.

This sure does look nice when done. I mounted it under the steering column and the knob as in the photos. The instructions were straight forward and installation was easy. I did make a custom panel for the control knob added a couple switches for future use) and I did make a custom bracket for the 7 wire trailer connector.

I installed this product in my Honda Odyssey for when I tow my pop up trailer. It was a easy install. I was able to utilize an open fuse spot on the fuse panel right under the drivers area and also a grounding point in the same area, so I did not need to run power all the way from the battery. The unit was small and I was able to find an out of the way spot to mount the main part. My favorite thing about the unit is that the control knob is so tiny I was able to add it in to where other controls are for my sliding doors and it looks like it was an OEM mounted part. Super clean look and now it is always ready to go. When I hook up the trailer the unit knows that a trailer is connected and lights up. Everything about it works great. The only downside is that if you need to manually engage the brakes it is just a push button set at the force on the dial, versus other units that have a slider and allow for gradual increase of the manual application. This is not a big deal for me as I rarely engage the brakes manually and allow the proportional control to do its job, which it does really well. When I change vehicles I will either take this with me or buy it again.

Installed in a 2018 Ram. It took a little time but I wanted to make it look good. Fairly easy install with the correct harness and I mounted it in the same location as the factory one would have been.

E-trailer needs to include the knockout holder for the knob in the standard offering for the Frontier. Most of the time spent installing was carving on the factory supplied blank. I would have gladly paid for the click-in holder which I thought came with the custom plug-and-play harness. Otherwise, it was super easy, thanks to Nissan supplying the harness connections. The panel removal was easy enough with just one screw to remove.

Ordered the wires and Redarc Liberty and install went very smooth and easy the wires did not snap in place with the LR4 wires, but seem to be secure and the was able to mount the dial on the dash by the headlight switch so looks very clean.

Works really well, way better than the old one that also worked ok, but this is so much easier to deal with & smarter. We pull a small camping trailer with a 2005 Jeep Cherokee limited 5.7 hemi V8.
All that is visible is the button, so it is a super-clean install. I put the button on the narrow dash section at about 2 oclock of the steering wheel, so it doesn't get bumped too much and you can see the light. I mounted the red brain inside the dash, under the steering wheel. That cover just pulls down, hinged at the bottom. It was easy & I zip tied it in so no flopping around. Many Cherokees have a pre-wired run to the 7 wire plug but that can be tricky to find. Look up to the left of the brake pedal for a fuse box & dig around near there for a looped wire abut 1 foot long.
Seems best to keep the knob at middle - so the trailer icon is level. It's been about a year and we are really happy with this brake controller.

I installed the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty in my 2021 Subaru Ascent. I used the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Brake Controllers Item #RED69FR spliced onto the Subaru trailer wiring harness (color to color) included with the dealer installed hitch. Subaru’s harness included a fuse. At that point it was plug-and-play. I chose to locate the dash mounted Control Knob right below the cover for the fuse box in front of my left knee (there really isn’t any other place with access). A bit lower that probably preferred, but still readily accessible. I’m pulling a small travel trailer with a 2000lb. GAWR and the controller functions very well. As always, the etrailer staff was helpful and efficient.

2015 Chevy Equinox, 3.6, LTZ, AWD. This vehicle took a lot of digging to figure out where the brake sending wire is. After a few hours of pressing the brakes and testing wires under the hood and dash I finally came across a thread for a 2013 equinox. There was a link that brought no to etrailer surprise. After searching etrailer and calling Redarc I found where the wire is located through a forum that had a link back to etrailer. Any way, if you’re installing a brake controller on your equinox hopefully these pictures save you hours. Under the dash there is row of plugs, you’re looking for the black connector. There is a white wire in the middle (there are a couple white wires so be sure to press the brakes and use a multimeter or test light to be sure you’re using the correct one) that wire goes to the center brake light and is what I used for the brake controller. After the controller was installed everything worked perfectly. Went on an hour trip both ways, through the rain and sleet on the way home and the controller worked perfectly.

This brake controller did not work in my installation. Even after calling Redarc tech support. I had to totally replace with another brand controller. I spent many hours trying to figure this one out and could not make it work correctly.

The control knob on the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller part # RED24FR is held in place with friction. The initial install of the control knob will need to be done with the dial set to 0 but if you mess up you can simply pull the knob off and retry.
